Cast: Claire Foy, Matt Smith, John Lithgow, Victoria Hamilton, Jared Harris, Vanessa Kirby and Eileen Atkins.

Synopsis: This story reveals the political rivalries and romance behind Queen Elizabeth II’s reign and the events that shaped the 2nd half of the 20th century. – Netflix.

Why We’re Watching: Seeing as The Crown is the most expensive drama ever made by Netflix, it’s hard not to look forward to it. It promises to be an entertaining, yet thought provoking ride through Queen Elizabeth II’s early reign as the Queen of England. Seeing it from her prospective should add a different spin to notable events of the past.

How to Get Away with Murder S03E01 Recap

0

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

Annalise and her five, fumbling students Wes, Connor, Michaela, Asher and Laurel are back! And it’s finally revealed, after months of waiting, what happened to Wes’ father and why.

Frank being Wallace’s killer was unexpected. The expectation there was that the killer had been some random third party and that Wes had unwittingly walked into something. But when it’s explained why Frank killed Wallace – Frank was atoning for the fact that he had known that it had been Wallace behind the car crash that killed Annalise and Sam’s unborn child and he’d hidden it from her for years – it made sense that he had done it and why (other than the usual of him having been asked to).

Follwing this, it was unnerving to see Annalise losing control and screaming into the heavens with Wes.

Even in the worst of situations Annalise is in absolute control and has a strategy. But here she had nothing and could do nothing; a position that certaily not just the audience, but Annalise herself, is unfamiliar with.

It’s a little too obvious that Frank is the one hanging up “Killer” posters of Annalise. It will be interesting to see how that little mystery unfolds.

It’s also not clear as yet why she was looking for him. He obviously seems to think that she wants him dead (he did kill her P.I.). But it’s not quite so apparent exactly what her plans for him are.

This episode made a point of showing Annalise being kinder and softer toward her students. And that was done for a reason.

In the last two seasons, based on how she reacted to who was under the sheet, the two people who would immediately spring to mind are Bonnie and Wes. Maybe even Frank. But now? After seeing how she was with Michaela, Connor and Asher (Laurel can’t seem to get out of the dog house with Annalise)? It’s hard to say who it is that could make her react so powerfully.

The immigration case they were working on concluded so unfairly. The judge’s thinking was understandable, but at the end of the day she punished him with deportation for lying. Such a harsh sentence, for such a small thing, was unnecessary.

For the most part the episode just caught us up on what the characters were – during the time skip – and are doing, introduced a new character and set up the conflict for at least the first half, if not the entirety, of the season; as a first episode is supposed to do.

But there really wasn’t anything that stood out during the episode. No big moment. Not even the tease of the death of a seemingly big or important character (it was in the teasers after all) and Annalises’s house being on fire. It did do its job of raising questions and provoking intrigue though.

There was a laugh out loud moment when Annalise told Michaela that they looked like they were working the corner. And Oliver thinking that he was bad was kind of cute. In a way that makes you want to gently rest your hand on his shoulder, shake your head at him and say “Oh Oliver.”

Random thoughts:

  1. Is everyone Annalise surrounds herself with crazy?
  2. More shirtless Nate please.
  3. R.I.P Conner & Oliver.
  4. Maggie’s real?!

How to Get Away With Murder airs Thursday nights at 10 PM on ABC.

Adblock Plus to start selling Ads

0

In a surprising move last week, Adblock Plus announced it will soon start selling something they are calling “acceptable” ads. For those of you who do not know what Adblock Plus actually is, it’s an add-on used in browsers to block ads and prevent web site tracking. So I am sure most of you would find it strange that a program used to block ads, is now going to show your ads they deem “acceptable”. Before it was possible for users of Adblock to allow sites they liked to show them ads, but it seems Adblocker is taking this one step further.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhb7NM9MGQA

They intend to create an ad marketplace where website operators can choose from their collection of ads, and use them on their site in place of known “bad” ads. The operations and communications director for Adblock Plus, Ben Williams, stated in a blog post that this initiative is supposed to be a decent “compromise between users and advertisers.”

On one hand advertising on the web has gotten more than out of hand in the last couple of years. Pop up ads, ads that are not able to be skipped, and ads that are unable to be muted, have been a constant source of annoyance for many watchers of media content. It has been a problem that many site owners have been ignoring because even though they are annoying, they bring in revenue.

It is that revenue however, that makes adblockers a terrible program for content creators. Millions upon millions of dollars in revenue each year is lost because of adblocking software. It’s a simple fact that most of these sites need the ads to bring in money, since for most content creators, the sites are their jobs.

Adblock Plus has the right idea to help cut down on bad ads, however, to profit of this gesture, does not seem the most moral thing they could have done.

Lethal Weapon S01E01 Recap

0

In a move that surprised literally no one, another hit movie from back in the day has been remade, this time for television.

Fox has rebooted the hit movie series Lethal Weapon for the small screen, and it’s not as bad as you think! Is it a cash grab? Yes. Did we need a Lethal Weapon series for TV? No not really; however what the first episode for this series does prove, is that the buddy cop formal for shows is not dead, and can still be enjoyed by all.

The summary for this episode can be very brief. The pilot for this series for the most part sticks to the original script- with two new partners in the LAPD coming to grips with their contrasting personalities. We have one detective who sticks to the book, while the other can only be described as an ex-navy seal and professional lunatic. It was strange seeing the death of Riggs’ wife first hand instead of meeting up with him after he was already in mourning, but one can equate that to the producers wanting to show the catalyst of Riggs’ insanity. In this pilot they really pummel home the idea of Riggs having no more reasons to live after his wife and baby died. It’s a death wish that haunts him, but he can’t fulfil it because “she’d be ashamed of me.”

This then brings us onto his new partner, Detective Murtagh. Murtagh is preparing for his first day back on the job- he previously had a heart attack which limits him currently from having his blood pressure running too high. Seeing that he has Riggs now as a partner, it’s not farfetched to say blood pressure will be a reoccurring plot point going forward.lethal-weapon-new-1-600x889

This pilot was of course filled with action; by far the best action scene was the high speed car chase through the grand prix race. It was corny, but insanely enjoyable. The main case was about a faked suicide to cover a drug plot gone badly. Anyone who has watch CSI or Law and Order will be familiar with such a plot, so it’s forgettable.

The biggest take away from this episode is how much effort Clayne Crawford is putting into his portrayal of Martin Riggs. His insanity was electric to see on screen, and is pretty much the reason anyone would keep watching this show. Damon Wayans’ portrayal of Roger Murtaugh was nothing to write home about, though one can attribute that to the dominance of Clayne’s performance.

Overall the new Lethal Weapon is an ok watch, a lot nicer than anyone would have thought after first hearing about the reboot. The line “You’re too old for thi…” from Riggs to Murtaugh was a nice call back to the original Lethal Weapon, let’s hope this new series can atleast be on par with Mel Gibson’s and Danny Glover’s initial take on it.

“Lethal Weapon” airs Wednesdays on Fox at 8pm.

Network: CBS

Cast: Dermot Mulroney, Augustus Prew, Odette Annable, Reshma Shetty, Aaron Jennings, Ward Horton and Brenda Song.

Synopsis: From the executive producer of Parenthood and Friday Night Lights comes a unique medical drama centered around a young Silicon Valley tech billionaire who builds the ultimate cutting-edge hospital that treats only the most rare and insurmountable medical mysteries—at no cost. Lending credibility to this new venture is a maverick surgeon who’s the first to discover that his boss’s mission is to get bureaucracy out of medicine, use the most forward thinkers in technology, and just save lives—including his own. – CBS

Why We’re Watching: Judging from the series promo, Pure Genius, has a lot of potential to be an amazing series. It looks to be as heart-warming as it is thrilling; an emotional rollercoaster in the best way. It also looks like it could fall into the trap of being overly sentimental. Here’s to hoping it is the former and not the latter.

SYNOPSIS
This award-winning shoujo series follows Kae Serinuma, a chubby “fujoshi” (a female who loves to indulge in fantasies of boys love). She gets sent into shock at the death of her favorite anime character and wakes up days later having lost a ton of weight and carrying the status of ‘popular’ after four of the school’s most attractive boys at school ask her out. You’d think that would be a dream come true but that isn’t exciting to her at all — she’d rather see them date each other! – Crunchyroll

WHY WE’RE WATCHING
Why? Because, why not? The last reverse harem anime I’ve seen was Amnesia. Unfortunately, even though Uta no Prince is classified as reverse harem, there seems to be little to none of the element present so it presents itself off as an idol anime instead. There aren’t that many reverse harems out there as of recent, especially not as light hearted as this one sounds. The art seems typical for a shoujo anime, with all of the art work seeming to focus on big sparkly eyes where all the emotion will be expressed, especially being directed by the same man who did Peach Girl. I personally can’t wait to see how Brains Base will take this genre and twist it about and turn it inside out for all it’s worth while still keeping to those shoujo elements.

Allo Allo Allo

A new day, a new app from Google. Today Google officially released its brand new messaging app called Allo. In a statement on their official blog, Google stated –

“Today, we’re releasing Google Allo, a new smart messaging app for Android and iOS that helps you say more and do more right in your chats. Google Allo can help you make plans, find information, and express yourself more easily in chat. And the more you use it, the more it improves over time.”

Google is hoping that having Allo heavily integrated with Google now “the personal assistant developed by Google” will pay off significantly in the heavily saturated messaging app market.

Allo features not only predictive texting, but also suggestive texting they are calling “Smart Reply”; this will enable users to respond to questions or pictures in the chat by simply tapping on a suggested word or phrase the application deems appropriate for the context. Emojis and stickers will also be available for use in Allo, which should please Snapchat and Telegram users.

User privacy has been a well discussed topic of late, and Google obviously not wanting to be left behind, has integrated end to end encryption for this application, but only in “Incognito mode”

Google’s Allo is available right now in the Google Playstore and Apple’s Appstore.

SYNOPSIS
Junior high school student Shouyou Hinata gains a sudden love of volleyball after seeing a national championship match on TV. He creates a volleyball club and eventually, five other members join the team, but they suffer a crushing defeat in their first and last tournament in middle school at the hands of so-called “King of the Court” Tobio Kageyama, in the first round. So, Hinata joins Kurasuno High School’s volleyball team, vowing revenge against Kageyama. However, Kageyama is also on Kurasuno’s team. The former rivals form a legendary combo with Hinata’s mobility and Kageyama’s precision ball-handling. Together, they take on the local tournaments and vow to meet Kurasuno’s fated rival school in the nationals. After finally overcoming one of their biggest hurdles that is Aoba Jousai, Karasuno is now set to face their biggest obstacle yet: The strongest team in their prefecture, Shiratorizawa Academy. With a guaranteed place at Nationals on the line, both teams are set to go all out in this 10-episode special! – Anime News Network

WHY WE’RE WATCHING
Because…..Haikyu!! is bae. For real, I wish I were kidding. In nearly every new season of anime, there exists at least one sport related show. Unfortunately, there were never enough to truly impress me and so I took a long break from the genre. That is until Haikyu!! came along and showed me the light. Not only do I like volleyball, I love how even though the characters are 100% dedicated to the team and their sport, the comedy is first class and manages to fit in so well with situations. It also shows that they also go through times of self-doubt, vulnerability, depression, frustration and general concern as any other person would, particularly the third years on the team who want to see Karasuno shine on the national stage once more. There is also a cast of many different characters, all with different personalities from the over-energetic Hinata to the neurotic Yamaguchi, and who could forget the comedic relief duo of yakuza-talking tough guy Tanaka and Nishinoya, who forever watch over (*ahem* let’s call it the welfare of) their beautiful team manager Shimizu. Even though season 3 is only going to be 10 episodes long compared to the first two seasons, it is set to be one of the most exciting showdowns to determine whether Karasuno will be able to get through to play their fated rival Nekoma after their promise at the training camp in season 2.  There is much to look forward and I don’t believe that I.G production will disappoint on that.

SYNOPSIS
The story follows the lives of Chitose Karasuma, a college student who aspires to be an idol voice actress, and other young women in the industry. – Anime News Network

WHY WE’RE WATCHING
There was Shirobako, a show that surrounded the anime making industry and its constant struggles. New Game, dare I say which was about the development of games, but its’ light hearted comedy made it less relatable has just finished airing its twelfth episode. You have to wonder, what could possibly be the next show that will attempt to lure us into the reality of the industries that we follow, and those people in said industries who are constantly working so hard to bring their consumers timeless entertainment. Well Diomedea, has the answer to that, with their newest title for the fall season, Girlish Number.

Shouta Ihata, whose recent works include last year’s television adaption of the ever popular online browser card game, Kantai Collection, makes his TV anime directorial debut in what can be considered as a first for this studio, since they normally specialize in comedies such as hard hitter for last season, handa-kun as well as the ever present Ika Musume (Squid Girl). Their last attempt to jump into a new genre by way of Spring 2016 mystery title, Mayoiga was not too well received by some, so we’re hoping they can redeem themselves. The character design is cute, plus Nakai Kazuma, another favorite seiyuu of mine…Nonono, let’s try that again. My most favorite ever male voice actor, Nakai Kazuya (One Piece, Samurai Champloo, Gintama) is also in the show, so expect lots of fangirling! Good luck to Diomedea with this new adventure!
