Microsoft Edge is the Best Browser…in terms of battery life

0

Many of us PC enthusiasts would be very surprised hear about any browser Microsoft has made that is the best at anything, but that is just what Microsoft is claiming. This is hardly the first time Microsoft is claiming such a thing however;  back in June they went on record stating that its new Edge browser is best in class with its battery performance. Thus in their eyes, made it the obvious choice when it comes to streaming content. Some of its rivals at the time questioned the legitimacy of the tests run, and to remove all doubt about its testing, Microsoft is now back with another one.

In a statement released by Microsoft about the recent test, they said “The Microsoft Windows team measured the time it took four identical Surface Book laptops to run fully through their batteries while streaming video from Netflix. The results were recorded with a camera and a time lapse was made available publicly.” They then went on to mention how the Microsoft Edge browser lasted 23% longer that Opera’s offering, and massive 45% longer than Google Chrome. It was worth noting the Surface Book laptops were running the windows 10 anniversary update, which may have given an unfair advantage in Edge’s favour.

All is not a full sweep for the Edge browser however – the lack of wider extension support and real world stability should be a grave concern for Microsoft. It is however, a great sign of things to come, hopefully Chrome and other browsers can step up their game in response to Microsoft’s clear intention to be number 1 in the world.

Nakajima Atsushi was kicked out of his orphanage, and now he has no place to go and no food. While he is standing by a river, on the brink of starvation, he rescues a man whimsically attempting suicide. That man is Dazai Osamu, and he and his partner Kunikida are members of a very special detective agency. They have supernatural powers, and deal with cases that are too dangerous for the police or the military. They’re tracking down a tiger that has appeared in the area recently, around the time Atsushi came to the area. The tiger seems to have a connection to Atsushi, and by the time the case is solved, it is clear that Atsushi’s future will involve much more of Dazai and the rest of the detectives! – My Anime List

WHY WE’RE WATCHING
It’s not very often that you get to witness a hot-blooded supernatural fist fight that has been directed by a conspicuous shoujo anime director. That’s right, Takuya Igarashi returns to our screens once more for a second season of Bungo Stray Dogs. Igarashi is known for being able to mold whatever series he picks up into his own ideal, while still respecting the original foundation as well as his approach to comedy. So it was safe to say that this title was going to be in good hands.

The show itself still has much to offer, particularly on the ever colourful returning characters’ back-stories and has given itself enough room to expand on those stories. The beautifully drawn and animated characters are all voiced by talented seiyuu that truly breathe life into the characters in their own unique way. The seiyuu to listen for would be Mamoru Miyano who voices Dazai. Miyano demonstrates his flexible voice range between Dazai’s cool headed rational moments and then his MANY not so cool moments (Plus, I has a small crush on him as well. K. Bye) With a new set of villains coming into play, and plenty more secrets to be revealed, we can’t wait to see what Bones has in store for us this season with Bungo Stray Dogs 2!

Tricia’s Bright Idea

0

Even from a distance I could see the bright and bubbly aura of Tricia Hercules as I walked towards the park bench we’d agreed to meet at. The young and vibrant director of Bright Life Family Centre has recently been expanding the Bright Life Team and couldn’t help but gush about her new public relations officer who had been helping her prepare for this interview. Her genuine enthusiasm was contagious and I was eager to learn about her and all that she had to share.

A social worker by profession, Tricia’s first internship in 2011 was at the Barbados Family Planning under the supervision of Keriann “Sirrah” Hurley. During her internship period, opportunities to counsel others always seemed to present themselves; from there, the love and passion for counselling began to grow.

It wasn’t too long until she realized that she was a ‘sucker for counselling’, she said. And it all made sense too.

Tricia always enjoyed finding the solutions to problems, especially when she worked in event planning for the Kingdom Arts Festival, where problem solving skills were essential. The ‘finding solutions’ aspect is what she loves most about her counselling experience.

Although she discovered what she loved and was passionate about, Tricia found herself in a position where she couldn’t find a job in Barbados. At this time when the prospect of finding a job in this field was bleak and returning to school again was not possible financially, her entrepreneurial skills sprung forth and she founded the Bright Life Family Centre.

“It was something I felt God wanted me to do and he reminded me that I always wanted to own my own business”, she said.
blfc-logo-2It started online as a blog page where she’d post and send out encouraging words, create the graphics and everything else that was needed. “I was the chief cook and bottle washer”, she said.  Everything was still so new with no revenue for a paid staff. Additionally, it was like her baby and she advised that you needed to be careful with whom you share your vision with.

Well, the vision for Bright Life is definitely growing. Tricia has raised this ‘baby’ from an online page to an organization that provides professional counselling and educational services and events. One of the services in particular caught my interest right away, art counselling.

Tricia describes it as an untraditional method of counselling. She uses art as a tool to make persons more relaxed, calm and receptive towards counselling. Once that is achieved, it helps with the sharing process and persons are able to better express themselves.

The idea first came about during her internship; she used art in a session for the first time and that sparked the idea. She said, “Not everyone in our society may have been socialized to share and even though some persons may want to, they may find it hard to”.

This is a prime example of where she could add art to the counselling process. It allowed her to smoothly guide the conversation to what they had come to talk about.

She finds the use of art in counselling and the power that it has fascinating. An artist at heart, she loves art in general and it has always been a part of her life, as she is a visual and musical artist. Combining both of her loves, counselling and art, Tricia found a great solution to ease the tension for some of her clients. But that wasn’t the only function it served.

She found that it could also unlock and reveal certain things about the client without them verbally saying it. The lines, textures and colours all convey something on their own, even how we write can reveal things about our personalities or emotion at that time.

I got a little preview of what may occur in a session when she asked me to write my signature. Tricia wrote hers underneath mine and we looked at the two contrasting signatures on the paper.  She looked at mine, as I nervously chuckled, and described how the lines were all moving in one direction with everything precise and very focused and all combined, talked about a quiet nature.handwriting

Well, that wasn’t a bad analysis, I thought. And it was pretty accurate honestly. Tricia’s signature, she said was kind of all over the place but at the same time it flowed. Which could speak to liking a lot of different things which could seem a bit all over the place but it also spoke to her free spirited nature.

Not every session would involve you writing your signature, however. There is no set procedure for a session, she said. Simply because everyone is different by age, issues they bring, background and many other variables. In some sessions, she may realize that a client is in need of educating in order to prevent the same problem from reoccurring. In this case, some of the educational services she provides would be implemented as a part of the session.

She recalled a moment at one of the Adults Art Express workshops where persons thought they were just coming to do “a little painting.” But it turned out to be an emotionally cleansing and revealing experience. One of the participants exclaimed “I didn’t expect all of that to come out!” while others were requesting it be much longer.

Adding art to counselling can make it a very revealing session but she wanted to make it very clear that it is not in an intrusive way in which one would feel victimized. What persons experience is an empowering feeling. Empowering because they get to understand what was happening inwardly, how to handle it and how to work on it as well.

The type of art she generally uses is visual and abstract, but it is not limited to that form of creative expression. It depends on the person and their likes and dislikes; some may not want to use art at all and some may already be artistic. Once she gets an understanding of the person, she works to suit. She recalled a client whom she realized was very poetic and interested in creative writing and was able to use that to help them express the feelings they were bottling up.

Though it is a great service, everything comes with its challenges.

Tricia said that at the moment art counselling is not a widely known or performed counselling service and so the demand for such sessions, for now, is not very high. Persons may have seen it and it is creeping in, but culturally, it’s not the go-to form of counselling. Then again, she found that counselling on the whole is generally not the go-to solution for persons in our society; it is more of a last resort or something enforced by the law for a particular case.

This shouldn’t be the norm though.

Tricia added that you don’t need to find yourself at the breaking point to go to counselling and you shouldn’t let it reach that point either. She wanted to encourage persons that if there is something they need help sorting through, even the smallest of problems, if the solution doesn’t seem clear you can go to counselling. Talking about it with a professionally trained person is a much faster way to reach results than trying to figure it out on your own. She adds that sorting through things on our own can sometimes add to the issue by making conclusions that are totally off course.

The stigma attached to counselling or therapy is a contributing factor to why it isn’t seen as the norm, she explained. Tricia believes what may deter persons from seeking counselling is the distrust persons have in the society’s “malicious” nature; persons may think that if they go to counselling in Christ Church they would return to St. Lucy and hear all of their business. However, Tricia stresses that this not the case, especially not at Bright Life Family Centre.

The team is well trained and each member has to sign a confidentiality form before they are allowed to work with their clients; whether a volunteer, an intern or a counsellor. Policies and clauses are also put into place and in the instance that someone feels as though they were violated, they have the right to take it to law enforcement. But the sharing of information is something that they are very strict about. The entire practice has modernized its way of information processing and she hopes that knowing this will ease some of the worries persons have about seeking counselling.

For the future, Tricia says she is not limiting herself and is open to creating more businesses, collaborating with other organizations and all that is to come. She plans to continue doing what she loves, which is helping people and solving more problems prevalent in our society.13934865_326210667721980_5356616793966654786_n

Currently, she is developing a family community called Parent Tales as one of her problem-solving initiatives. This was inspired by recent news and talks about the behaviour of our children in society. After hearing many complaining, she thought, where else was better to start than the roots and began a parenting focused educational forum.

She has created an environment for parents to share, grow and learn. The current series of events called the Parent Lounge is about encouraging self-care and personal growth and development for parents. Parents have been able to go and be served and rant freely, while at the same time learn new and healthy methods of parenting. By the end of the night, she wants parents to be encouraged and be able to leave feeling like they have released some sort of stress.

It was a great opportunity to learn all about the good work Tricia Hercules is doing with Bright Life Family Centre. Learning more about her was a joyous experience. We hope that she continues helping others and sharing her contagious smile and laughter with the world.

Behind Closed Doors

0

Author: B A Paris

Release date:  February 11, 2016

Genre: Psychological thriller

Publisher: St. Martin’s Press

Summary: Everyone knows a couple like Jack and Grace. He has looks and wealth, she has charm and elegance. You might not want to like them, but you do.
You’d like to get to know Grace better.
But it’s difficult, because you realise Jack and Grace are never apart.
Some might call this true love. Others might ask why Grace never answers the phone. Or how she can never meet for coffee, even though she doesn’t work. How she can cook such elaborate meals but remain so slim. And why there are bars on one of the bedroom windows.
Sometimes, the perfect marriage is the perfect lie.

My thoughts:

What if Prince Charming was a psychopath, would Cinderella still have received her happy fairy tale ending?

The book, “Behind Closed Doors” is a psychological thriller which deals with the important subject of domestic abuse. The Prince in this case is Jack Angel- a seemingly successful domestic abuse lawyer, who marries his now wife, story protagonist and our “Cinderella”, Grace Angel. Just like in the story of Cinderella, she is in a broken home, hoping for a wonderful man to rescue her and accept her for what she has to deal with. Sadly for her, her wish in a sense came through.

To his friends in the outside world, Jack Angel is the perfect man; he is rich, charming, generous, and devoted to his beautiful wife Grace Angel. To Grace, her husband is nothing more than a mad man, one who revels in seeing her in agony and suffering. Not in a psychical way, to him that would be too easy with no real fun. Rather, he tortures her mentally, using her sister Mille as leverage for his acts. From the first meeting between Jack and Grace, he had everything planned out. Every question he asked, every person he met, everything he said to Grace from then on was all part of his plan for taking away every ounce of her independence. He knew from the start, cutting her off from her job and family, would make her vulnerable and easy to manipulate.

“I look around at everybody laughing and joking together and struggle to understand my life has become a living hell that nobody present could even begin to imagine” – Grace Angel

It is that struggle in the end that gives her the resolve to do what she knows must be done. Thanks to her husband’s meticulous nature, Grace uses her intelligence and his confidence to defeat him. Her loving sister Millie (Who suffers with Down syndrome) gave her a simple plan, “We kill Jorj Koony”. From that simple phrase, she builds a complex but solid scheme of ridding herself from the devil. A plan filled with irony, which makes us as readers feel highly satisfied. This book was quite enjoyable from start to finish; with the gripping writing style as a bonus, finishing off this novel in one day was not difficult. The claustrophobic feeling we felt for Grace was enhanced by the three emotions we saw her go through – happiness, confusion, and then sheer despair.

So who is this book for? If you have weak stomachs and are unable to read about domestic mental abuse, this book is not for you. However, if you do love an intriguing story no matter the subject matter, or if you just love stories with layered characters, then this is certainly a must read for you.

Animekon VII: Quantum Age – Here a Harley, There a Harley, Everywhere a Harley Quinn

0

This year’s Animekon was the best I have ever been to; and I’ve been going to Animekon every year since it started. It was the best because, in order to write this, I had to go to every contest, competition and panel. I essentially lived in the Quantum Keep that entire weekend and this was the first year I actually did go to everything and not sit behind a booth all weekend.

And I’m glad I was obligated to because I thoroughly enjoyed everything that I attended.

If I had to choose my least favourite thing about the convention this year, it would be Tim Waggoner’s panels. That is not to say that they were bad or boring. They were quite enjoyable and informative. I had never heard about him before he was announced as a guest for Animekon and it was nice hearing about his experiences as writer, especially one who writes tie-in novels for two TV series that I’m a huge fan of.

It was just that he didn’t have as much personality as Kelly Hu and Phil LaMarr, whose panels and Q & A were hands down, no doubt about it, the highlights of the convention. The two of them are incredibly hilarious. Kelly Hu and Phil LaMarr are tied for “Best of Show.” Their crowd was receptive, engaged and definitely contributed to why their panels were great.

Maki Roll and Princess Mentality Cosplay were very entertaining as well. I didn’t get to see the entirety of their 28 Days of Black Cosplay panel, but from what little I was able to watch, it was interesting hearing about how different their experiences as Black cosplayers in the United States was from the general experience of Black cosplayers in Barbados.

I’ve seen the stories about it online and witnessed the racism and harassment on the social media pages of Black cosplayers, and in that regard there is not much of a difference. But it was a surprise hearing how their in person experiences are so different from those of Barbadian cosplayers.

The Kamehameha competition was rousing. I didn’t really expect it to be because as I said, I never actually went to anything at Animekon before this year. And I do not regret my attendance. Fil and Son Gohan absolutely stole the show.

It was quite funny and again, the crowd was part of what made it fun. There was so much energy, enthusiasm and excitement from the crowd and I could not help but get swept up in it.

The same can be said of the Sally Up Push Up Competition. Who would have thought that a bunch of guys doing push ups on a stage could have been so thrilling?

But it really, truly is the crowd that drives the experience of what’s going on, on stage at Animekon.

It was fascinating that each of the guests spoke about diversity in the geek sphere. Maki Roll and Princess Mentality Cosplay specifically had two panels about it as it related to cosplay, but Kelly Hu and Phil LaMarr touched on it briefly in their panels as relates to pop culture media.

I found it interesting that in the year when three out of the four guests were people of colour, that diversity seemed to be the unofficial theme of the convention. And it was nice to have two people of colour who are very successful in the American entertainment industry – which is infamous for its lack of diversity – be there.

My only gripes were there was no free Wi-Fi, I was looking forward to seeing Once Upon a Time in Ichirouganaim and unfortunately it wasn’t screened, the Quantum Keep was super cold (I was not prepared!), D-Piddy didn’t come (best wishes dude) and I really don’t like the seating arrangements in the cafeteria.

I’d rather several small tables that seat around three to five people than a few large tables that seat seven to ten. It lends itself to awkward situations.

You or you and your friends go to this giant table where only one person is sitting and you sit there and never engage with this other person. Or perhaps even worse yet, you and your group of friends sit at a table with one or two other groups and the groups don’t interact.

Also it’s too small for the kind of numbers Animekon sees.

I was a little disappointed with the cosplay competition. I did not get to see the entire thing because I was interviewing Kelly Hu and Phil LaMarr, and only got back during the second half of contestant #5’s performance. I heard Daniel Fitzwilliam’s performance was amazing and I wish I had seen it.

I understand that some of the costumes were fairly restrictive and didn’t allow for much movement, but from what I did see a lot of the contestants didn’t do much of anything and they didn’t really utilise the stage and therefore didn’t have much of a performance. For some of them it felt as if they had not prepared anything and didn’t know what they were going to do when they got on stage.

The costumes themselves however, were amazing and I am really impressed with how far Barbadian cosplayers have come in the very short period of time that cosplay has been practised here.

Overall Animekon was exciting, entertaining, exhilarating and exhausting. But exhausting in a good way; a satisfied kind of exhaustion where you feel like you accomplished something or did something worthwhile.

Gaming News : 16th September, 2016 Edition

After Hideo Kojima’s untimely and spectacular exit from Konami last year, fans of the famous game director were eager to know more about his future projects. During a pre-Tokyo Game show press

Image from Death Stranding
Norman Reedus in Death Stranding

conference this week, it was revealed that Death Stranding would be an open-world action game which aims to connect players. He mentioned how the name of the game originated from the phenomenon of cetacean stranding, where dolphins and whales wash up on land and die. While other games offer elements analogous to “sticks” for gameplay, Death Stranding will also offer “ropes” to tie and link players together. “At the end of the day I want to offer an action game where people get connected with different elements, not just clubs,” Kojima said through a translator. Kojima is obviously keeping deeper details on the game close to his chest for now, but fans of his work will have faith in him to deliver a solid gaming experience. His production company, Kojima Productions, is developing this title and is set to feature Walking Dead’s star actor, Norman Reedus. This collaboration is a reteaming between the two following the much hyped but cancelled Silent Hills Project “P.T”.

Earlier in the month, Sony officially announced a beefed up version of the PS4, dubbed the PlayStation 4 Pro. This machine features 4k compatibility, a more powerful processor and reportedly enhanced graphics. President and Global CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Andrew House, was quoted in saying the new console was “targeted to the hardcore gamer or those who have invested in high end display technology”. Which is an interesting statement, considering most if not all hardcore gamers ps4-princing-zmagusually game on the PC. Ironically, those are the players Sony management seems to think they can bring over to their gaming market. From an interview with The Guardian, Mr. House stated, “I saw some data that really influenced me,” he said. “It suggested that there’s a dip mid-console lifecycle where the players who want the very best graphical experience will start to migrate to PC, because that’s obviously where it’s to be had. We wanted to keep those people within our eco-system by giving them the very best and very highest [performance quality]. So the net result of those thoughts was PlayStation 4 Pro – and, by and large, a graphical approach to game improvement.”

All very good things to hear for a smooth gaming experience, however, this product on paper has nothing to sway PC gamers from reconsidering their gaming platform choices. Sony claims it will have “4k compatibility” but it certainly will not support 60 frames per second at that resolution, the standard with PC gamers aim for. As things stand right now, it is not said to be upgradeable; another aspect PC gamers are accustomed to utilizing. From all indications it seems to be simply a more powerful version of a PS4, and just like the PS4, in a years’ time it will be outdated. PS4 Pro is set for a mid-November release, with a recommended retail price of $399

Everyone likes a dog for a companion

Sticking with Sony Interactive Entertainment, some controversy stirred late last week after it was revealed by Bethesda Game Studios that Fallout 4 mods will not be supported on the PlayStation 4. This is of course in contradiction to the initial statement at the launch of the game, that mod support will be available on all three (3) platforms, (Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC). “After months of discussion with Sony, we regret to say that while we have long been ready to offer mod support on PlayStation 4, Sony has informed us they will not approve user mods the way they should work: where users can do anything they want for either Fallout 4 or Skyrim Special Edition,” wrote the Betheda.

As of posting this article, Sony has made no official statement on the matter, but it does leave Fallout 4 players on the PS4 in a confusing position. Mod support was one of the major selling points of the game on the platform, and now that it is seemingly never going to be available, they will be forgiven for feeling cheated out of the full Fallout 4 experience. Fallout 4 is an action role-playing video game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Tell us what you think below of these three stories. Do you have confidence in Hideo Kojima to deliver another gaming experience on par with his previous works? Does the PS4 Pro have a chance to sway PC gamers into investing in the console market? What do you think is the reason behind Sony’s refusal to allow Fallout 4 mods? Samsung Gear VR Experience

0

Oculus Rift and HTC Vive VR platforms have dominated PC gaming articles and forums for the better half of 2016, and the hype and sheer interest behind does not seem like it will slow down any time soon.  The HTC Vive has been lauded since its official release as being one of the best VR (Virtual Reality) headsets money can buy for pc.  Oculus, on the other hand, is often credited as being the catalyst that started off the VR craze back in 2012 from its kick-starter campaign.  It was only a matter of time before manufactures in the cellular arena stepped in to give their take on the experience.  For those who are unfamiliar with what Virtual Reality is, it’s the use of computer technology to create a simulation; one that you yourself are immersed in, and able to interact with, rather than just viewing content on a screen.  Imagine you are watching a live concert on television and are able to watch it as though you are actually there, with the crowds there right next to you.  That – my friend – is what VR content can bring to our everyday media!

Samsung Gear VR is one of only a few available options for VR in the mobile market, and after experiencing it first hand, I have to say it definitely will be a force to be reckoned with in the future. The Gear VR is a piece of tech that I can see will get better with each iteration of the product as Samsung improves the manufacturing process and usability of it.  The VR movie I had the pleasure of seeing is called “Invasion!” a short film created by Baobab Studios.

My time using the device was quite enjoyable, and at an advised retail price of around US$100 before taxes, I think it’s quite worth the price; though one has to factor in the cost of the phone as well, since the headset only works with Samsung flagship devices.  The film “Invasion!” was an interesting experience – with its main character “Chloe” dealing with an alien, yes you guessed it, invasion.  The plot was very much kid-friendly; however, it did showcase exactly what VR will bring to entertainment content – immersion.  VR has and will do what 3D content tried to do for years, immerse you into the experience.  Moving your head around while wearing the headset and noticing things in the background you would never normally see in other visual media, is the selling point for all VR content. A point that I am sure Samsung will double down on as it looks to increase sales in the upcoming quarter.

TV Recap Preview – Luke Cage

Why We’re Watching: With Daredevil and Jessica Jones, Netflix has shown that it knows what to do with its Marvel properties. If the quality of those two shows is anything to go by – especially considering that Luke Cage himself was introduced in the latter series and did not disappoint – then all signs point to this being an incredible series.
