Westworld S01E01 Recap

0

HBO finally dropped its long anticipated Sci-Fi western epic “Westworld” this week; which means viewers, we have much to discuss. To say expectations were high for this particular series would be putting it mildly, after all some media outlets where predicting it would be the next “Game of Thrones”. Right out the gate, it’s not, however what it does have is the perfect mixture of ingredients to make it a show to follow closely.

So brief overview of the episode- we start off in a small town where a young woman named Dolores says goodbye to her dad and rides away to a local shop. She is an innocent girl who loves the small community of which she interacts with. Little does she know that the man she misses, Eddy, is now back in town and looking for her. After finally meeting up with her, they return to her home to be then killed by a gunslinger (Man in Black). Yes in the first moments of the show, the main protagonists die. The Man in Black is apparently just a visitor to this adult themed amusement park, a visitor who kills and tortures these “hosts” for information. To what end? Later episodes should shine more light on this.

Westworld itself seems to be a well thought out theme park where any customer can play out their wildest fantasies . Want to have wild sex with a saloon girl? Want to rob banks and get away with it? Anything at all you desire, Westworld can make come through just for you. For a price of course. The robots “hosts” who inhabit this world are very human-like, for some they might be too human.

Behinds the scenes of this futuristic theme park we have the head of the Programming Division, Bernard Lowe, played by Jeffrey Wright. By far the most prestige actor in this series is of course Sir Anthony Hopkins who plays Robert Ford, the founder and chief of Westworld. The “hosts” are his very creation and during the course of the episode he hints towards having a bigger agenda later in this seasonscreen-shot-2016-08-28-at-10-49-45-pm

So what worked; the performances for one were flawless as expected, even though one could argue nothing much happened in this episode. Jeffery Wright was on point, showcasing a man who loves every aspect of his job, especially when the programs in these robots go beyond his expectations. Ed Harris’ character as the gunslinger was truly terrifying. His cold collected demeanor, coupled with his fantastic outfit, created an air of uneasiness about him whenever he was shown on the screen. He was the T-100 this series needed to push this plot along, this plot that so far is a slow burn.

It’s that slow burn that holds the first episode down so far- since it’s strictly relying on the intellectual strengths of the script, it leaves it lacking heavily in action which it needs. The plot and characters have a lot of weight, which can be a good thing; however it needs more to retain viewership rather than just a lot of science deep dialogue.

This to remember from Episode one of the first season:

  • Boobs are every where.
  • No superheroes in this world?
  • Who takes care of the pests problem in this world, fleas are everywhere.

Once Upon a Time S06E02 Recap

0

Well the Evil Queen isn’t wasting any time.

ouat-season-6

At the start of the episode we immediately jump into the Evil Queen executing her plan. And she’s in for the long haul; she wants to blacken Regina’s heart and tear apart Team Good. In order to really get the ball rolling though, she needs a few things from Regina’s vault.

And who does she have in tow? Why, Zelena of course. Who now must face the terrible dilemma of choosing between which half of her sister she wants to side with. If this episode was any indication, I’d say she’s firmly on Team Evil Queen. Mostly because Regina hurt her feelings a little bit. She had the opportunity to warn Regina of the Evil Queen’s return and she didn’t. It’ll blow up in her face later but we all know Regina will forgive her anyway; this is Once Upon a Time where your arch nemesis becomes your best friend.

The thing that irked me about this scene, and the one later in the episode when Zelena meets Regina at the town line, is that we got the same, mopey, woe-is-me-I-never-had-a-family Zelena we got last episode.

And last season.

And the season before that.

Why is she still on this show again?

I don’t hate Zelena. I just think she has absolutely no reason to be on the show anymore. And it feels like they’re running out of things for her to do.

Moseying on a long, we meet Regina and the rest of Team Good at Granny’s. And Regina, like her Evil Queen half, decides to get moving on that plan she talked about last week. In her first step toward starting over and being a better person, Regina gives a speech to the new arrivals from The Land of Untold Stories about not being afraid of the stories that will come and facing the future together.

The speech started off well enough but kind of got cringey from the middle and onto the end. I know what show I’m watching and what to expect, but sometimes it gets really cheesy. Regina in that moment was too let’s-hold-hands-and-sing-Kumbaya and love solves everything. She was like that for a lot of the episode really.

Edmond Dantes himself, the Count of Monte Cristo, makes his first appearance, very mysteriously.  I must say that the acting in the scene in which he kills the Baron was very good. Craig Horner and Andrew Kavadas pulled me in with their performances. I was enthralled. Then the spell was broken when the Evil Queen entered the scene. Next to Horner and Kavadas in that scene, Lana Parrilla’s acting right then was quite over the top and it was intrusive and disruptive. The Evil Queen is supposed to be a bit cartoonish but in that scene, at that time, perhaps it didn’t call for that.

And then Regina reveals to Snow and Charming that the Count is there to kill them because she hired him to. Very many years ago. And now he’s coming after them. Of course Regina’s past comes back to haunt her! She can’t move forward without looking back. I suppose she will have to deal with the Evil Queen both literally and figuratively; the actual Evil Queen and also the sins she committed when she was her.

Regina wasn’t the only one dealing with the sins of her past and trying to turn over a new leaf in this episode; Killian got in on the action too.

Now that Belle and Rumple aren’t together anymore, she needs a place to stay. So in swoops Killian to offer his ship as an apology for how he wronged her. And, of course, she accepts and forgives him.

With all the villains -turned-good-guys trying to make amends this episode, it reminded me that Rumple is only villain who is still a villain. He’s changed, yes. But he’s still in pursuit of the same things he’s always been and still resorting to the same slimy, underhanded and manipulative means to get it.

Speaking of Rumple, the Evil Queen surprises him at this shop and tries to seduce him. I need that pairing less than I need Zelena to turn evil this season.

It turns out that the Count actually doesn’t want to kill Snow and Charming but he has no choice because the Evil Queen has his heart. He comes dangerously close to killing them, but they’re saved by Regina, who, because of his relentless pursuit, had to kill him in order to do so. I agree with the Evil Queen here; Regina didn’t really need to kill the Count to save them. She could have incapacitated him. And then throw him in the jail maybe? I just feel like killing him wasn’t necessary.

When Emma went to Hopper to tell him who she suspected the person in the hood to be I didn’t think she was going to say Regina. I thought she was going to say herself since she referred to the Evil Queen’s line of tearing them apart. I took it literally and thought it meant that Emma would have to pull a Jekyll and Hyde.

This week’s episode was better than the last. It was more engaging and things actually happened. I wish the Count had been around for more than an episode. I’m not entirely satisfied with how he was incorporated into the show. But overall it was pretty good aside from all the times I noticed Lana Parrilla overacting. She seemed really off this episode.

Random thoughts:

  1. “You think I should tell my family?” YES EMMA!
  2. “Well, I mean, the question is; why haven’t you?” Thank you for saying what I’m thinking Hopper.
  3. Do the writers of the show even know what the timeline is anymore?
  4. How did no one die when that zeppelin crashed?
  5. I love how Charming immediately accepted that the Evil Queen was back.
  6. Why is Henry surprised that Killian doesn’t get his movie references?
  7. Ha! “Lesser of two evils.”

Once Upon a Time airs Sunday nights at 8 PM on ABC.

Amazon’s new Fire Stick

0

Thinking of getting a new dongle for your TV this winter? Amazon has just the offering with you in mind. Amazon has decided to upgrade its Fire TV Stick in time for the holiday season this year with two different products.

The new Fire TV Stick is similar last year’s model, but features a more powerful quad-core processor, which in theory will improve the user experience. It keeps the $39.99 price tag, and still maxes out at 1080p. 4K video fans have to instead buy a Fire TV set-top box, which starts retailing at $99.99.

The true changes come with the inclusion of a remote with microphone control- this should aid in the voice command aspect and also add to the user experience. Having full access to Amazon’s Alexa smart assistant will be a clear selling point for this upcoming shopping season.

This new Fire TV Stick release is of no real surprise- Roku said they will release new streaming devices for the upcoming season and even Google was rumoured to release a new 4k ready chromecast later in October.

The Girl on the Train

0

Author: Paula Hawkins

Release date:  January 13, 2015

Genre: Psychological thriller

Publisher: Riverhead Books

The boy who cried wolf is now an alcoholic woman filled with hate

The subject of amnesia in thrillers often have the a harder tale to portray- not only must they tell well thought out plots, but make it convincible to the point where we as readers feel just as much in the dark as the characters in the novel do. Which brings to the interesting tale of The Girl on the Train; a truly gripping tale involving three women, death, and of course a train?

The flow of the novel is, to quite simple put, beautiful woven between the three main ladies- Rachel, Megan and Anna. Rachel is first encountered is this narrative commuting from home to the streets of London, When we meet her she is exhausted from your typical working day and eager to be back home to relax. Having atleast four cans of alcohol in her bag certainly helps. The journey home takes her through the street where she use to live, and where her ex-husband Tom now lives with his new wife Anna. Seeing how Rachel can’t handle to looking at that home now, it safe to say the relationship did not end on the best of terms. It is in this area she notices a young couple every day, who she called Jess and Jason. One day however, she is thrown in shock after reading in the paper that Jess (who is actually named Megan) has apparently disappeared. After continuing to read, she sees that the main suspect is actually Jason (real name Scoot).

Rachel in her heart knows Scoot would never do that to his wife, so she decides to get involved, and solve this intricate mystery. With that however, they are a few problems. For starters Rachel is a known alcoholic, known to experience blackouts and unstable with her behaviour. Rachel in this novel is not sexy, in actuality she is probably one of these most unlikeable main characters I have seen in a while. A brave move by the author, and a move of which I have full respect for.

“There’s nothing so painful, so corrosive, as suspicion.”

It’s even more accurate to say most of the characters in this novel are flawed- these flaws lead to downfalls and shocking moments throughout that helps us readers invest deeply into turning each page and finding out more. Is Scoot truly innocent? What role does Tom play in this mess? Anna for the most part certainly earns the hate toward her, but what else does she have to reveal?

The Girl on the Train is written expertly by Paula Hawkins; which the constant balancing between time and different perspectives, the suspense grows and grows. The twists are never obvious and make you question all logic in a good and fascinating way.

Gaming News: 30th September, 2016 Edition

0

This week, our first procedural generated topic is of course on No Man’s Lie Sky. News confirmed yesterday by Eurogamer was that No Man’s Sky was being investigated by the Advertising Standards Authority in the UK. The agency is investigating whether Hello Games had misled its customers by showing videos, screenshots and other forms of media that “allegedly” did not match with the final game product released to the public.no-mans-sky-tudo-revelado-arte

The investigation of course is still in its early stages, so the ASA declined to comment further, but one of the complainants revealed details of its response in a post on Reddit.

For us gamers, it was hard not to notice the incredible backlash after the release of No Man’s Sky. Tons of promises and over hype done by Hello Games, aided in leaving gamers feeling cheated out of the gaming experience they believe for the most part they were promised. So much promises were made about the game, that even a Reddit thread was created to compare the promised game features versus what we actually got.

ASA came to notoriety in the past, after it made Sega admit that early trailers for Aliens: Colonial Marines did not accurately showcase the final graphical fidelity of the game. Even the Pay to Win “Free-to-Play” game Dungeon keeper, had stop marketing itself as free to play. This was after the agency found that many of the game’s functionality required some form of payment to be playable.

We await word on the ASA’s findings in their investigation.

Destiny is without a doubt, one of the most popular online shooters released in the last decade. With an estimated 30 million registered users since 2013, it’s no surprise that Bungie wants to increase the player numbers in the next instalment. destiny-iron-banner-01A rumor surfaced Tuesday thanks to NeoGAF saying that “somebody that works at Activision” confirmed that PC support will be available for Destiny 2. Even though as of now it’s purely he say she say, it is not hard to imagine the sequel for the popular game coming for PC (masterrace). Gaming on pc has grown significantly year to year- Activision would have to be silly not to want a piece of the lucrative market.

And finally, EA released some news about Battlefield 1’s single player campaign titled War Stories. The campaign will consist of five mini campaigns that will take players around the world to regions such as the Middle East deserts, the Alps. France and more.

A few of note will be “Nothing is Written” which will take gamers to the exotic deserts of the Middle East to fight alongside the infamous Lawrence of Arabia. You two will go head to head against the fierce Ottoman Empire. “The Runner” will place you in control of an Anzac runner delivering highly important messages at the very frontline of a naval invasion against the same Ottoman Empire

How to Get Away With Murder S03E02 Recap

0

What can I say Connor? You win some, you lose some.

This week’s episode focused a lot on Connor since he got to be first chair on their case; trying to get a woman – Irene – who killed her abusive husband out on parole. But even as he enjoyed a victory in his professional life, he suffered a loss in his love life.

The rest of the Keating Five finally find out that Connor and Oliver (Conniver?) are broken up, when Connor tells them just before class. It’s kind of hilarious that they assumed that Connor cheated or wronged Oliver somehow (and care more about the dissolution of Conniver than Annalise’s stalker).  Come on guys, Connor isn’t unscrupulously promiscuous anymore. Like Asher said; you’ve all changed after everything that’s happened.

On a bit of a side note; am I the only one who doesn’t like the new kid? He’s so cocky and he apparently hates Annalise. She’s not the nicest person and I wouldn’t even really call her a good person, but I dislike him for disliking her. And he’s jealous of the Keating Five maybe?

I must say, for someone who didn’t want this case to begin with and purposely sabotaged his chances, Connor really impressed me when he stood up for Irene during the parole hearing. It may not have been the best thing to do at the time (it really could have hurt their case), but it needed to be said given the way the men on the review board were treating her and I’m glad Connor was passionate enough to speak up.

I’m surprised he confessed to her about killing someone. It was the smart thing to do in terms of trying to connect with her in order to convince her to speak of her abuse; tell his own truth to get her to tell her’s. But it was also pretty dumb; don’t go telling people you got away with murder Connor! How to Get Away With Murder 101!

But of course it works and Irene tells the parole board about the abuse she suffered at the hands of her husband. Before that though, thanks to Annalise, we learn that Irene’s former sister-in-law (who absolutely refused to forgive her for killing her brother) was abused by him too. Which only makes it all the more confusing why she isn’t on Irene’s side and grateful to her. But people deal with abuse in different ways.

Irene really only speaks about two incidents of being abused by her husband. And it’s enough. Her speech was powerful and moving and I’m glad the writers of the show didn’t decide to go really in depth with the abuse she suffered. It was unnecessary. I’m also glad she told them, quite plainly, that she did plan to kill her husband and that she wasn’t sorry. Killing him set her free.

She stood in her truth and that made the victory all the sweeter. Three cheers for Irene and three cheers Connor on winning the case.

I had so much hope all episode that Connor and Oliver would get back together. How sweet was their conversation after Connor’s outburst? But it was not meant to be. Oliver is dead set on the relationship being over so he can finally do something for himself for once. Which in and of itself is an admirable sentiment. Do what you must to be happy Oliver.

R.I.P. forever Conniver. What is dead may never die.

Elsewhere this episode, Annalise was still on the hunt for Frank. After he killed her P.I. last week she decided to ask Nate to track him down for her. Which doesn’t work. Frank is far too crafty to be found that easily by someone who is not nearly as tech savvy as he is.

It’s evident that Annalise is worried about Frank coming after her and Nate keeps offering his protection but of course she turns him down. But then she invites Wes to stay with her? Claiming she’s lonely? Immediately after meeting with the school president about the posters? I’m with you Wes; that was weird. Also very inappropriate considering he is her student. Annalise should know a lot better. Also she has Nate. How could she be lonely?

After Bonnie does some reconnaissance of her own, Annalise learns that Laurel has been calling Frank virtually non-stop since he left. Bonnie tells Annalise to let her take care of it it – and is mum on exactly how she will – only for the three off them (Annalise, Bonnie and Laurel) to team up at the end of the episode to lure Frank back with Laurel as bait.

Lovesick Laurel was a little annoying to watch last week, so seeing her begging Frank over voicemail was not welcome. But that reveal made the moment a little more worth it.

I’m a little wary of Annalise roping others into her plan to find Frank. He did kill that P.I. and I wouldn’t put it past him to hurt Nate, Bonnie or even Laurel if push came to shove. He was really unhinged when he appeared early in the episode. He is very afraid of Annalise.

And I’m pretty sure Lovesick Laurel is still Lovesick Laurel and only teamed up with Annalise and Bonnie to get her man back. Although luring him for some form of retribution on her part does some equally plausible.

Asher and Michaela (Masher?) as a couple is random and weird but also still cute. Her attempt to shut him down because they were “too different” did not deter him at all and it was sweet that he came back to her later to talk some sense into her and tell her that he’s more than a “meat stick.” Michaela is far too uptight and really does need to let go of her old self.

Plus, Asher is such a lovable goof that any pairing he is a part of is automatically adorable.

When Oliver showed up at Annalise’s house at the end of the episode I immediately thought that the dead body was Connor. It would have made sense given that the episode was partially about him. But he was just there to do a job for Annalise. Of course she had a plan and needed him to work some (illegal) tech magic.

I still think that it could be Connor under the sheet though and that Annalise’s scheming could be a bit of a misdirect.

This week’s episode was more interesting that last week’s and it feels like the show is really starting to pick up. Hopefully the trend continues next week and throughout the rest of the season.

Random thoughts:

  1. Shonda was listening; more shirtless Nate! Wet shirtless Nate.
  2. Is it a coincidence that “Irene” sounds like “Aileen?” As in Wuornos?

How to Get Away with Murder airs Thursday nights at 10 PM on ABC.

Android Launchers

0

For most of us, the term “Android Launcher” means absolutely nothing in our day to day lives. The beauty of owning an android device however, is having the choice to break away from the norm, and add some flare to the interactions with your daily device. I am sure most of us remember installing interesting themes on our phones back in the day, just to try something new. Android launchers follow the same concept, but go way beyond just the visual. Not only can you tweak icon appearances and font sizes, but also change the device’s behavior to compliment your daily activities. Adding functionality is the name of the game when it comes to installing launchers, and its one they are very good at.

Today we look at two android launchers at different ends of the spectrum, one which excels in the art of simplicity, and the other which strength lies in pure customization.

Google Now Launcher: Google Inc.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPqliPzHYyc

If pure simplicity and a clean android experience is what you are looking for in your smartphone, nothing gets better than the Google Now launcher brought to us by Google Inc. Getting rid of pointless apps from the manufacturer is first priority in creating a cleaner interface for your mobile phone, and this launcher does just that from the moment of installation.

The “pièce de résistance” however, lies in its Google Now feature. When you go left of the main home screen, it brings you to an area populated with cards which include up to date local weather information, any important upcoming appointments, updates from websites you visit the most, and other information accessible from your phone. This means in essence, Google Now becomes your very own personal secretary, as it learns from your viewing and work habits, and updates the incoming information to reflect your actions. Building on this feature, the launcher also has a voice search option, where if you say “Ok Google” from any home screen, you can ask the phone to search for information, get directions, or create reminders. Long pressing on the home screen brings you to three options of changing your wallpaper, selecting widgets or going into the settings of the launcher.

As expected of Google Inc., this is a well-made launcher, with a clean interface that is easy to get the hang of. Updates come quick and timely to Google made applications, so we can expect this launcher to get even better in the future

Nova Launcher: TeslaCoil Software

nova-launcher-night-mode-4-3-beta-2

Ladies and Gentlemen, here is where we unlock the true potential of the android operating system. Where boys become men, where we turn water into wine, where we become legends. Ok that last part was a little out there, but it does capture the point of which I am making. If you came to android to make every bit of your device experience tailored to your needs, well then sit down and enjoy the ride, because you have found Narnia.

Nova launcher is often lauded in android circles, as one, if not the best 3rd party android launcher available on the market. It is not hard to understand why either, since right from the get go, Nova launcher gives you the tools needed to change every inch of your interface, in a simple to understand manner. Though it is true Nova launcher can be loaded on and used in a similar fashion to the above mentioned Google Now launcher, its real power lies in customization.

Full control is acquired over the size of icons, the amount of icons you can have in a given row and column, and the labels you give to them. Moving on from just the icons, you have full control over all animations on your phone, the scroll speed, the way you use specific amount of fingers to launch certain actions, the list goes on. One of its more loved features however, is the ability to hide any apps that you have no use for. So yes, goodbye to all the random apps on your phone installed by the manufacturer, taking up precious space that can be filled with apps you actually want to use; reducing the amount of clutter on your device, and over all giving it a better user experience. Every single aspect of the interface can be changed, which is a big plus for us who love to add a bit of personality into things we own

Nova launcher has a paid version in the Play store which costs $10 dollars in Barbadian currency; however there is a free version, which has most of the needed customization options of the paid version.
