How to Get Away With Murder S03E03 Recap

0

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

The episode opens and we start with a flash forward, as per usual. It picks up right where it left off last week. Annalise gives Oliver the phone, he wipes it and she is booked at the police station and put into jail.

We flashback to six weeks earlier and see Annalise getting ready for the day. She heads into the kitchen after hearing the blender go off and finds Nate making her a smoothie for breakfast (who wouldn’t want to wake up to that?). He informs her that he filed a missing person’s report on Frank. I don’t know if I like Nate taking the initiative on this whole Frank situation. I don’t think that he should. I agree with Annalise in keeping him uninformed so that he’s not involved. But, it’s too late for that. She involved him last week. He knows about the Frank situation and if she doesn’t want him to do things like that then she needs to let him know what’s going on.

As expected, as soon as she gets to work she throws away the smoothie. And is met by the school’s president. I am not so sure if I trust her yet. Every time she meets with Annalise it’s to give her some bad news or inform her of a decision that was made that will negatively impact her. I would like to believe she is trying to help though. htgawm

The case this week is that of a real estate developer ( we’ll call him Creepy McCreepster, or McCreepster for short) who was caught on camera dumping a hooker’s body after she passed out doing drugs with him. She died two days later. He immediately tries to flirt with Michaela when she shows up at court and Annalise swiftly shuts it down . The guy is a total creep and slimeball. If were Michaela I would try to get off of the case too.

Laurel met with her father as she was instructed to by Annalise and Wes is investigating him. I’m very curious as to why Wes is looking up Laurel’s father. We likely won’t find out anytime soon but since the show’s creators made a point to show it, I’m sure it’s of some kind of importance.

Of course Laurel’s meeting with her father doesn’t go well. We’ve seen it before; she hates him. He has the brilliant idea to force her into group therapy and he even confesses that he has been tapping her phone (am I the only one who wondered how many phone calls between her, Annalise and the rest of the Keating Five that involved them speaking about the crimes they’ve committed he overheard?).

As much as she tries to push him away, I think that Laurel’s father genuinely is sorry for the pain he caused her in the past and wants to make amends. But she is not ready to let go of her anger toward him, but she may have started to just a little bit; it was sweet that he went to her hotel and took her a cake and she instantly perked up and cheerily fed him a bite. And then he ruined it by basically asking her to “sell him [her] soul” as she put it.

Asher really showed just how much of a sweetheart he is and how adorable he can be when he tries to shield Michael from the news that her ex, Aidan, has gotten engaged, defend her from McCreepster when he tries to hit on her again and tells Bonnie that it is important to him that he be honest with her even if she doesn’t care. I hope Michaela comes to her senses and she and him work out. If not, that he quickly moves on because it’s about time he got with a woman that appreciates him.

At the behest of Bonnie Annalise meets with the prosecutor on the case to arrange a plea deal. Before Annalise can say anything however, the prosecutor lets it be known that she doesn’t like her and won’t help her. But that doesn’t stop Annalise. Later in the episode she uses the prosecutor’s own words against her and essentially bites her in the ass. Annalise is the bitch that karma is afraid of. I did admire the prosecutor for standing up to Annalise though; that took a lot of guts. vemsinr

The next time we see Wes he is in bed with Maggie – who was being pretty weird with the testing his pulse and feeling his belly for growths thing. She came on a little strong in demanding they do something for his birthday but I get that she’s just trying to cheer him up and do something nice. I applauded her for being comfortable with his friendship with Laurel and not being paranoid about it but then she shattered that later. I do, in some way, think that Wes and Laurel may well have feelings for each other on some level. Ultimately though, Maggie has nothing to worry about.

As it turns out, McCreepster had previously killed another girl because she rejected him. I was so glad Annalise slapped him. He showed no remorse for either crime and was more concerned with justifying the first one with the fact that she teased and rejected him. I expected Annalise to somehow work it out, maybe through some complex maneuvering, to get him convicted. Maybe make it look like she was trying to help him when his case when she actually wasn’t. But no such luck. I’m really glad for that slap.

Laurel returns to Annalise to give her report about her meeting with her father…and lies. She tells them that her father didn’t find Frank (which he did) and fails to tell them that Frank actually called her. I suppose her actions mean that my theory from last week – that she has been Lovesick Laurel this entire time and only worked with Annalise and Bonnie to get him back for herself – was correct. A tad disappointed in her. I do get the impression, though, that that may not be all there is to it.  htgawm-png-2

In true How to Get Away With Murder fashion, we’re left on a cliffhanger. There is someone else in Annalise’s house and they’re alive! But we don’t know who it is and hopefully we’ll find out next week.

Random thoughts:

  1. Why does Annalise always look like someone said something really stupid?
  2. Half shirtless, sweaty Nate is better than no shirtless Nate at all.
  3. Oliver’s face is all of us.
  4. You didn’t need to be that mean to Oliver, Connor!
  5. The slap heard around the world.

How to Get Away With Murder airs Thursday nights at 10 PM on ABC.

Luke Cage S01E01-06 Recap

0

It’s finally here! All 13 episodes of Luke Cage dropped on Netflix on September 30th. As promised, the show is begin recapped here at Zeitgeist Entertainment. And since all of the episodes were released at once, we’re going to do things a little differently; the show will be recapped in two parts – the first 6 and then the last 7 episodes. So here it is! Part 1 of our recap!

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

Episode 1 – Moment of Truth

The woman in the barber shop trying so hard to flirt with Luke and get his attention was hilarious. I was not seeing things in Jessica Jones; he really is a chick magnet.

Why did Misty make it so painfully obvious that she was watching Cottonmouth? Even after Luke pointed out that he was well aware of her trying to bore a hole into Cottonmouth’s head with her eyes, she still didn’t do it anymore subtly. She sucks at being discreet.

I was a little miffed at her flirting with Luke because, in my mind, he and Jessica belong together and I really want to see their relationship – baby and all – make it to the Netflix series. Neither of them can have their own shows at that point, though. But their flirting was fun to watch nonetheless.

Misty also made a nonsensical decision, in my opinion, when she showed up at the aftermath of the shooting; a crime scene involving criminals who work for the crime boss whose club she had just the night before been in and very obviously staring at. If she is going undercover at the club – or at all – shouldn’t she not be in the field doing police work and risk being seen and found out?

On the topic of the shooting, Shameek royally screwed up when he shot Dante. His plan backfired spectacularly because shooting Dante so he wouldn’t snitch is what made Dante snitch in the first place. He really didn’t think that through.

Mariah, you and Cottonmouth shouldn’t be seen in public together. You said that yourself. Follow your own instructions.

Also, her rhetoric concerning “keep Harlem Black” sounds an awful lot like the rationalisations white supremacists have used to justify continued use of the Confederate flag. She also sounds like Donald Trump. It seems like what she really wants is segregation.

Stemming off of that, the moment I saw the men that gave Luke the “New Harlem Renaissance” flyer I knew they would be trouble later. Not as immediately as they turned out to be trouble though. I expected a through line in the series to be how Mariah has inspired Black people in Harlem to proudly display their racial prejudices the same way Donald Trump has for white supremacists and xenophobes everywhere. I found it interesting that the people they decided to “tax” for said “renaissance” were Asian; the minority within the minority.

Random thoughts:

  1. The TV shows always reference you MCU films. Can’t you return the love?
  2. Am I the only one who found it weird how Mariah was touching everyone’s hair?
  3. Hero for hire reference!

Episode 2 – Code of the Streets

The moment Pops said he wanted to save Chico I knew he was going to die. Then the show doubled-down on the “this character is going to die” signals by giving his backstory. Anytime a character who isn’t the lead gets their backstory explored like that, chances are they’re gonna die. His fate was sealed. luke-cage-code-of-the-streets-cage-and-pops

His backstory was interesting though and I didn’t expect it. I thought he’d been a nice, upstanding citizen his entire life. It also made me question Cottonmouth’s age since he is apparently old enough to be Chico’s father; seeing as he started his criminal career with him. I thought he was in his thirties but now it looks like he’s closer to his late forties or early fifties. Black don’t crack.

I was equally relieved and frustrated when Chico refused to go with Luke; I didn’t want him to go because if he does Pops will die but I wanted him to go because he would have been safe if he did. In the end though I would have preferred Chico to die over Pops.

I loved the banter between Luke and Misty when he basically confronted her in the barber shop. They were not being as subtle as they thought they were. Everyone else knew what was going there.

The thirsty mother from episode one returned and continued to try, in earnest, to catch Luke’s eye. Who can blame her though?

I have no idea what Tone was trying to prove by going against Cottonmouth’s orders (Who disobeys Cottonmouth? Did he not know who he was working for?). I actually had hope that Pops wouldn’t die since Cottonmouth gave specific instructions to leave the shop alone, but that was just the writers giving false hope. Of course Pops died. Because we can’t have nice things. And we got an Uncle Ben moment to boot.

His dying was important to the story and plot, however; it was the catalyst that led Luke to going into the business of superheroism.

I softened to Cottonmouth a bit when he said he would pay to rebuild the barber shop. It demonstrated that he still cared for and respected Pops and it humanised him a little. The man has feelings and some modicum of honour. roof

I knew Tone was going to die the second he disobeyed. I was quite taken aback when Cottonmouth didn’t kill him simply for his disobedience. I thought he was crueler than that. But it was a nicer touch and a key character moment that Pops being killed is what made Cottonmouth do it.

Random thoughts:

  1. “Coffee” is the new “sex.” This show is going to make that happen.
  2. Why are you salty Misty? You’re the one that lied.
  3. This show is so Black! Love it!

Episode 3 – Who’s Gonna Take the Weight

I wasn’t all that enthused about this show when I finished the first episode but it’s steadily getting better and more engaging. Mostly because Luke is active now and not sitting around hiding and being a bystander. Pops dying probably was the best thing that could have happened for the show; it’s really pushed it forward. I didn’t expect the show to basically be a revenge story. That’s an interesting direction. I appreciate that they took three episodes to set up the plot instead of cramming it all into one episode.

The montage of Luke beating up Cottonmouth’s goons was too funny. He is so strong that when he hits them they just fly across the room like they weigh nothing and he doesn’t even need to hit them that hard.

Mariah has started to sound more and more like a xenophobe. Granted, her cause is honourable for the most part but she has essentially singled out a particular race and positioned it as superior. It feels like she is disguising her prejudice by hiding it behind a legitimate cause and using said cause to further said prejudice and exploiting the feelings of the community in the process. But I don’t think she is aware that that is what she is doing.  I think she believes she is genuine. But her speech tells a different story.

Misty’s increasing antagonism toward Luke is getting really annoying. I understand her being suspicious after the shoot out but she went from that to hostile. In fact, she was hostile from the moment she saw him in the barber shop and hasn’t let up since. Am I the only one who thinks her behaviour toward Luke is a tad unreasonable?  lead_960

Luke’s attack on Crispus Attucks was fun and cool and amazing. He was basically a tank. There was no shortage of laugh out loud moments; wrapping the car door around one guy, barely chucking another and him flying through the wall and of course, the couch.

I was very disappointed when it was revealed that Scarfe works for Cottonmouth. I really liked him; he was charismatic and funny and all around incredibly likable. It was sad to see Chico be killed, as much as I blamed him for Pops’ death. It seemed like he was about to turn his life around. And but that point there was no real reason to have him killed.

I did not expect Cottonmouth to retaliate so swiftly and so grandly. A rocket launcher? Really?

Random thoughts:

  1. You should really wear gloves Luke.
  2. You and Cottonmouth are the tiny birds. Fisk is the crocodile.
  3. But where did he get a rocket launcher?

Episode 4 – Step in the Arena

In this episode we got Luke – I mean Carl’s, backstory. luke-cage-prison-850x560

Luke Cage is not his real name; it’s Carl Lucas. Other viewers who are familiar with the comics would have known this already but I didn’t. I don’t read the comics and I didn’t do any research about them beforehand. So it was surprising to find out “Luke Cage” is an alias. Although given that he is on the run, it should’ve been obvious that he wouldn’t be using his real name.

The episode did not go where I thought it would in terms of how Luke got his powers. I assumed that Rackham wanted Luke for the experiment, not for the Mandingo fights. I thought that the experiments were was some kind of super soldier programme type business, which used the prison for test subjects instead of volunteers. (Again, I didn’t read the comics). So I was a bit confused when it went there.

His obsession with Luke was very disturbing, as were the lengths he was willing to do to in order to get him to be his pit bull. He did not see Luke or any of the other prisoners as human. Before it occurred to me that the organised fights were the same thing as the Mandingo fights from Django Unchained, they were reminiscent of dog and cock fights. I think those are parallels the show’s creators obviously wanted the audience to draw; it highlighted the dehumanisation of Luke, who only became increasingly bestial the more he fought.

The moment those two inmates found Luke and Squabbles in conversation, I knew that their plan to stop the fights would not happen. I was surprised and saddened that Alvarez and Comanche were actually able to beat him. After all of the training he had done with Squabbles, even if they said they held back the first time they beat him, I figured he was good enough to take them on and win.  6-850x560

I never believed Reva didn’t know about the experiments. We as the audience already knew that they were going on but I didn’t think she said they weren’t going on because she was unaware of it – in the same way that she was unaware of the Mandingo fights. So it came as no shock to me when she told Dr. Burstein to do it to Luke.

I am not sorry that in meddling with the experiment in an attempt to kill Luke, Rackham ended up killing himself.

I love the way they worked in his classic costume. He looked ridiculous and I am glad he said it. This is why super hero costumes don’t always need to accurate to the comic books. Some of them just don’t work on screen.

Random thoughts:

  1. Luke has hair!
  2. Luke has more hair!
  3. RIP Squabbles.
  4. They got coffee!

Episode 5 – Just to Get a Rap

Luke has officially run out of f*cks to give. 092816-luke-cage-episode-5-news

Not only did he announce himself on TV last episode (that just has to come back and bite him in the ass; he’s a man on the run). But he just used his powers, out in the open, digging through the rubble of his old apartment, with people taking photos and/or video of him from the sidelines. Not a care in the world. And of course Misty showed up. Genuinely surprised she didn’t use the opportunity to berate him like she always does. She made up for it later though.

I get what her problem with Luke is, but really; what is her problem? And who does she think she is to order him to stay away from Pops’ memorial?

Cottonmouth ran out of f*ucks to give too. He really started to unravel this episode.

I flip flop between liking and disliking Cottonmouth. Sometimes I like him because he clearly cared for and respected Pops and even though (or perhaps, especially because) he was responsible for his death he has sincerely tried to make amends. He also has a genuine love for Harlem and a desire to do what he thinks is best for his community. My heart starts to soften toward him. And then he does something despicable and that’s the end of that.

Sending his goons to attack the people and telling them it’s Luke’s fault so they could turn on him? Classic strategy. It backfired though. 11296942_why-netflixs-luke-cage-is-the-superhero_t72b70796

In yet another hilarious montage of Luke beating up Cottonmouth’s henchmen (he slapped that dude upside his head!) he did what he always does; successfully subdue them. The community hardly hated him afterward. Not that the show demonstrated that in any case apart from Aisha. But Aisha is clearly a hot head. The second she appeared on screen at the funeral I knew she was going to try to shoot someone. I thought it would be the men that stole her father’s ring, but then Cottonmouth came in right behind her.

When Cottonmouth gave his speech and was getting applause it seemed like the community was going to buy his B.S. and get behind him. But when Luke spoke and got a standing ovation from everyone…in that moment Cottonmouth lost Harlem. He didn’t hurt Luke at all with his little scheme. In fact, he gave Luke the biggest opportunity to prove his worth to the community and he did that in spades.

Misty was entirely right; it has become a pissing contest between Luke and Cottonmouth but I still think that Luke’s efforts are for the best.

Random thoughts:

  1. How is Cottonmouth dead broke after losing $7 million? He could not have had been very rich.
  2. “I am the gun.” My reaction.

Episode 6 – Suckas Need Bodyguards

Cottonmouth is really, really starting to unravel. tumblr_oem09okke51sp54a2o4_1280

Sure, Scarfe was an idiot for trying to squeeze him for money (does he not know who he is dealing with?!) but shooting Scarfe was even dumber. Dumber still was not shooting him again to make sure he was dead. He was the instrument of his own demise. Luke barely had to do anything to make him mess himself up. The more things crumble around Cottonmouth, the more reckless he becomes and the more mistakes he makes. Pull yourself together man!

I was a bit worried when Luke and Claire went into the barber shop and found a trail of blood. I thought someone had attacked Bobby, but it was only Scarfe. I’m not sure if he decided to give up Cottonmouth so that Luke would shelter him or if it was in retaliation to getting shot, but the characters in this show need to learn that shooting people only makes them snitch on you.

Mariah actually made a good point that I never thought of; Luke should be able to be killed by drowning or poisoning. Why did no one think of that? And for someone who was trying to project an image of warmth and kindness, she was quite snappy with that reporter, who I knew had been cooking up something. It was very clear that she didn’t like Mariah.

It doesn’t make sense to me that Mariah’s family connections aren’t widely known. She is a public figure whose grandmother and great uncle were “notorious” criminals and so is her cousin. How had no one before then linked them together when they are all well known figures individually?

Then the reporter had the guts to come back to Mariah after being kicked out and confront her about Cottonmouth’s arrest. I could see her getting murdered. luke-cage-s1e6-misty-scarfe-e1475730504739

As much of an a-hole – he said it, not me – as he was it was still sad to see Scarfe die. Maybe because it affected Misty so much. But he was a loveable dirtbag.

Misty’s very own precinct proved her wrong; the system does not work. Even will all of the evidence they need to get Cottonmouth off of the streets, they will set him free for optics. And taking him down had been so easy! He messed himself up! I hope Misty comes to realise now that she needs Luke to take down Cottonmouth.

Random thoughts:

  1. Is Mariah crazy?
  2. Claire’s mother is ‘Best Mom.’
  3. She knows what coffee means!

Gaming News: 7th October, 2016 Edition

0

Earlier this week, Outlast 2 developer Red Barrels released a demo for their upcoming horror game for all three platforms (Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC). This demo is only available till the 1st of November, which means horror fans will have some fun for the Halloween season. Most of us will fondly remember the first outing of Outlast in 2014; the first-person thriller set in a psychiatric hospital was a huge hit with horror fans, and now Red Barrels has finally given us a taste of the anticipated sequel.

The Summary for Outlast 2:

Outlast 2 is the sequel to the acclaimed survival horror game Outlast. Set in the same universe as the first game, but with different characters and a different setting, Outlast 2 is a twisted new journey into the depths of the human mind and its dark secrets. No conflict is ever black and white.

PC gamers will find the Steam link here.

The PlayStation Vr will launch world on October the 13th, so says the Head of PlayStation Network Americas, Eric Lempel. In blog statement he wrote:

Among the holiday lineup is one of the most incredible gaming experiences ever conceived — the opportunity to battle against the evil Empire in an X-wing fighter in VR. Thanks to the talented teams at Dice, Criterion and Lucasfilm, Star Wars Battlefront Rogue One: X-wing VR Mission will give PS VR owners a chance to experience something we’ve all dreamed about. This experience will be free for all PS4 owners of last year’s fan-favorite shooter Star Wars Battlefront when it launches on PS VR this holiday.

PlayStation VR is releasing just in time for the holiday season, hopefully Sony has enough content to keep its VR entry relevant.

And finally to our favourite game developer- Digital homicide official dropped its lawsuit against anonymous Steam users this week after Valve pulled all of its games off Steam. Not only has it dropped the lawsuits, but it’s also completely shutting its doors to further business.

Speaking with TechRaptor, Digital Homicide’s James Romine explained that Valve’s decision to remove all of the studio’s games from Steam is what did them in:

“The case dismissal was only due to financial reasons caused by the removal of our games. I believe the case was very solid. There were in excess of 140 false statements by the 11 Steam users, tens of thousands of posts harassing myself and my customers, three direct interference with written contracts with third parties by Steam users (some of which were competitors), and much more. A combined in excess of 25 reports were filed against the worst users of the 11 with no resolutions being found.”

This has literally surprised no one, in going after Steam’s customer base, Valve of course would have taken immediate action to protect its users, thus cutting off Homicide’s income. Suing people because of bad reviews is a shady move for any company to take part it, it would never look like a good thing. They also filed to get a refund on their court fee, ironic, since most of its customer base would want refunds on their awful games.

Its Jim @#$%ing Sterling son!!!
Its Jim @#$%ing Sterling son!!!

Jim Sterling of course must be reveling in smugness as we speak, after Digital Homicide also said they would drop the lawsuit against the man who “insulted” their games. Good and you Jim, we shall dance and sing with you to celebrate the end of this farce from the so called game studio.

Samsung buys Siri makers

0

After Apple and Google made strong waves in the niche personal assistant market for mobile devices, it was only a matter of time before Samsung decided to join the fray. Yesterday they did just that, acquiring the company Viv Labs, a start-up that was founded by key players behind the original Apple Siri team back in 2010. In a post on Medium by Dag Kittlaus, he said:

Samsung is setting its sights on becoming a major player in software and services, and specifically AI. Samsung Pay has already proven to be one of the most successful mobile payment platforms in the market and SmartThings is another software acquisition signaling their conviction. And they have installed a new cadre of senior SW-savvy management stretching all the way to the top with a mission. You will soon come to see the utter seriousness of Samsung’s intentions. And like us, they aim to win.

It has been wildly reported that Viv’s assistant is similar to Amazon’s Alexa; since it integrates third-party programs to help complete tasks set out by the user, even if the programs are not directly associated with the assistant. If Samsung does infact build Viv into its core systems, it could prove to be a very strong competitor in the future to Apple’s and Google’s offerings

Leathal Weapon S01E03 Recap

0

Was I the only one who found the ending a little weird from the norm? I mean yes, the case of the week was technically solved and the money recovered (if you call losing all of it on the streets recovered). There was however news of the beautiful Angela (Ellen Hollman) being decapitated; with no formal investigation being done into it, left a confused taste in my mouth. I would not be surprised if parts of this case appear once again later in the season.

The title for this week’s episode was “Best Buds”- this for those most part was the reoccurring sentiments being shared by the supporting characters who can see the friendship between Riggs and Murtaugh growing, much to the annoyance of the two detectives. Murtaugh’s old training officer made an appearance this week after a robbery of an armored vehicle took place. The vehicle was carrying pot money (pot the drug not the kitchen utensil), this of course led to a hilarious scene with Riggs getting high at a party while “investigating”. It would have been easy to predict from the beginning off the episode that Murtaugh’s old friend was part of the heist, however he just stole back some of the money. Which of course eventually sends him on the run from the law, though Riggs and Murtaugh were not actually making an effort to pursue him.

Riggs: So, I woke up this morning with the TV on, and you know, there’s one of those annoying commercials where couples are frolicking around, you know, overly happy, and it was difficult to watch.
Dr. Cahill: What’d you do?
Riggs: Shot the TV.

Even before the robbery went down, Riggs was at home watching TV and getting depressed at all the happy couples he was seeing on the tube. He could have simply turned off the TV, but no, he decided to shoot the damn thing. A little unstable don’t cha think? Yes, but funny none of the less. Once again Clayne Crawford’s performance as Riggs is the stand out in the show, the other characters hold their own most of the time, but Clayne is the one doing most of the lifting. They are still beating to death (poor choice or words I know) the loss of his wife as the fuel for his erratic behavior. I am willing to put up with it for now, but I can see how this can becoming really annoying in the future.lethalweapon103

As usual, any non-cable procedural police drama episode with drugs has to have cartel stereotypes in the mist, and this show is no different. This week’s episode moved from a simple robbery, to decapitation quite quickly however, so it’s safe to say the cartels will also make an appearance later in the season.

Also, am I sensing something between Riggs and his therapist? No? Ok it must be just me.

The chase scene at the end of the episode was ok for the most part. As per ususal Riggs run and gun approach gave way to destruction and mayhem on the streets (but this time, millions of dollars flying onto the street, so not a bad trade off)

Not a bad episode this week, but the stakes need to be raised. Murtaugh realized he needs to spend more time with his beautiful wife, Riggs now needs to start living again.

‘Deepwater Horizon’ Film Review

0

Deepwater Horizon is a 2016 biographical disaster film starring Mark Wahlberg, Kate Hudson, Kurt Russell, Gina Rodriguez, John Malkovich and Dylan O’Brien. The film is based on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion and oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that occurred in 2010 and Deepwater Horizon’s Final Hours; an article written about the tragedy in the New York Times.  It was written by  Matthew Michael Carnahan and directed by Peter Berg. deepwater_horizon_ver8_xlg

The story and plot of this movie are very simple and straightforward. There are no major side stories or subplots; or any at all really. All that’s given is the explosion and the events that led to it. But it is stunningly effective in it’s simplicity. There is nothing to distract from the core of the film, which really helps in maintaining the tension that is felt throughout because the plot doesn’t halt for a moment to focus on something else. The linear plot truly helps in establishing the cause and effect chain that resulted in the disaster.

There are two instances of foreshadowing in the beginning of the film that are cleverly inserted. A little obvious, but still clever.

This movie is intense.

It’s based on a true story so you know what’s going to happen, but it still manages to build an immense amount of suspense and tension that hardly lets up throughout the movie. In fact, it only gets more tense as the movie goes on. Every little moment, decision and action just adds to it, because you know what’s coming and you’re seeing how and why it’s going to happen (which is frustrating because it was completely preventable and you will blame one particular character for all of it).

It’s not exactly non-stop action, but it has that same kind of heart pounding intensity that leaves you breathless and enraptured. It hooks you in and does not let go.

The movie is a little slow in the beginning. It takes the time to establish the relationship between the workers on the rig and demonstrate how they’re all one big family. It goes a long way in serving the rest of the movie. The pacing does gradually pick up but you don’t notice it and the movie feels a lot shorter than it actually is. And that’s not a bad thing. It comes down to how very captivating the movie is.

The acting is very good. Kate Hudson’s southern accent is…questionable…but overall the cast delivers competent performances. None of them outshines the other and they lend a degree of authenticity to the characters that allows you to see who they’re portraying and not the actor themselves. Which is especially important in a biographical film.

The explosion itself is spectacular in the most horrifying way. Even though you know it’s coming, you’re not prepared when it happens. You can’t prepare for something of that magnitude.

Deepwater Horizon is an amazing film. Everything about it came together so harmoniously – and damn near perfectly – to actualise a film that is affective and cathartic (in the Aristotelian sense). It is truly an experience and definitely a film worth watching over and over again.

The Flash S03E01 Recap

0

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD!

Well that was a little underwhelming.

I was really excited about us getting Flash Point on the show. I knew it would be different because the show really doesn’t have much of any of the elements from the original story to stay true to it. But that was fine. I don’t read comics and my closest association with the DC universe has been the live-action and animated films. I did watch Flash Pointbut it was only once and it was a while ago and I don’t remember much of anything that happened in it.

I was really interested in seeing how Greg Berlanti and company would adapt it to suit what they had. As the season drew nearer, however, and we got more news about exactly how it would happen on the show, I grew less excited about it. Especially when it turned out that Flash Point would only be one episode and not the planned four way crossover (which would have been perfect for this story).

But I digress.

Even with my lowered expectations and no baggage from existing material going into this episode I was still left pretty disappointed.

The episode on the whole felt rushed. They tried to do a lot in a short space of time and some if worked and some of it didn’t.

Nervous Barry trying to work up the courage to speak to Iris and ask her out was endearing. And the way he looked at her before he ran off to see the fight between Kid Flash and The Rival was adorable.

But it made no sense to me why Iris said yes when he asked her out. She doesn’t know him and he didn’t do anything to endear himself to her and he was so spazzy and awkward it was painful. But she did say she found that cute. There wasn’t really much of a visible reason for her to say yes other than Barry and Iris belong together…which is exactly how they explained her acceptance later; their love for each other crosses timelines and she said yes because she is already in love with him in another timeline. That was eye roll inducing levels of cheesy. But this is the CW. the-flash-s3e1-31

Other than killing the Reverse Flash, I don’t know what Barry could have done with him besides lock him in a cage. It was impractical though. Was he going to do that for the rest of his life?

It was believable that Barry would get out of the crime fighting business if there were another speedster around to take up the mantle. His face after being saved by Kid Flash was funny. After last season Barry really needed a break. But why is he all up in the fights anyway? And speeding around town without even a hoody on to hide his face?

I didn’t really appreciate alcoholic Joe. It would have been nice to get more of an idea of why he was an alcoholic in this timeline. Seeing him be mean to Barry, the same way he was mean to Eddie about dating Iris, was a cool little throwback and worthy of a brief chuckle.

What was worthy of outright laughter was Cisco’s introduction. The music made that scene. Carlos Valdes does an amazing job as Cisco and always manages to steal whatever scene he is in with his adorkable-ness. Even when Cisco is a douchey billionaire, he was able to make him lovable. Caitlin was hardly present but in her brief amount of time on screen she brought some some humour with her. And she didn’t mention Ronnie once!

The fact that Team Flash, even though they were separated in this timeline and didn’t know each other, still had the same chemistry and rapport brought some heart to the episode. Of course, the explanation for that is they’re meant to be together no matter what timeline they’re in.

All episode Barry was losing his memories of the former timeline because, as explained by the Reverse Flash, the current timeline was overwriting the former and the more he used his speed the faster it happened. So Barry continues to use his speed. And it gets progressively worse. But he doesn’t actually decide that he needs to go back and fix the timeline until Wally get’s stabbed during the final fight with The Rival. the-flash-flashpoint-barry-and-wally-1

Wanting to spare Wally any suffering because of his choices was a great motivator for Barry to go back and let the Reverse Flash kill his mother. But because the episode was rushed and didn’t take the time to establish what needed to be in order for such moments to carry any weight, it just fell flat.

I do like that this version of Flash Point was far more personal for Barry and focused on him and his life and his struggles rather than a world ending event. The show relied a little too heavily on the audience’s experience with the other timeline to build the emotional side of the story rather than fully develop this story with these versions of the characters.

I see what the shows was trying to do and I like that idea, but to me they didn’t quite hit their target. This entire episode felt like filler.

And Barry still screwed up after trying to fix the timeline. Come on Barry!

Random thoughts:

  1. Why did Barry flash out of that coffee shop with so many people around?
  2. Barry: “So this is what it feels like to be a spectator and be saved by The Flash.”
  3. You’re being creepy Barry.
  4. Don’t get cocky Wally.
  5. Holy shit he got stabbed!
  6. Can we stop going back to the night his mother was killed?
  7. Ya dun goofed Barry.

The Flash airs Tuesday nights at 8 PM on The CW.

The Breakdown: Google Pixel

0

The Pixel costs how much???phptes8tp

Yes Google officially announced their new handheld devices yesterday, and after months of rumors we finally have solid facts to work with. Even though as usual, Google’s flagship was the main attraction this year as it always is, it seems a greater effort this year was made to showcase the new software rather than the hardware behind the device. This article however is about the Pixel, but before we go on however, two quick points to note:

  • How weird was this announcement event. There was little energy in the room and I am pretty sure they kept supporting the “jokes” with canned laughter.
  • R.I.P Nexus brand, you will always be in the hearts of us true android fans. You will never be forgotten.

Google released the Pixel and the Pixel XL, which are 5” and 5.5” respectively. Both have AMOLED screens, use 4GB of RAM, and have similar camera specs. The differences arrive with the screen size as mentioned earlier, the screen resolutions and the battery capacity. The 5” comes equipped with 2,770 mAh battery, while the larger XL version comes with 3,450mAh.

What is this headphone jack you speak of

The camera brings a 12MP sensor, 1.55µm pixels, with an f/2.0 aperture to the table, which apparently gives the Pixel the title of the best camera in a phone right now. Google showed off the electronic image stabilization on stage and it looks quite impressive, though reviews of the device will put that to the test.

Google Pixel and Pixel XL have the same storage options with 32GB and 128GB (for those who really want to be offline). To add to the pot, the Pixel phones get unlimited Google Photos storage for photos at full resolution. It is worth noting that this year, this is no wireless charging available for the phone, or dual front-facing speakers.

The Pixel brand debuted with the best and the most expensive Chromebook, and then ventured into Android with the Pixel C tablet. All of which were not cheap to say the least and the two phones are priced similarly – pricing starts at $649 for the smaller 5-inch Pixel with 32GB of storage, available for preorder today. That number scales up to $749 with 128GB of onboard storage, $769 for the larger Pixel XL with 32GB, or $869 for the XL with 128GB. Verizon in the US gets an exclusive “Really Blue” version, with the Quite Black and Very Silver versions available at several retailers.

A Hopscotch Treat

0

She’s confident about her popsicles; I’ve had one and I can definitely see why! Lynmarie Jack, the founder of Hopscotch Treats invited me to her beautiful and cozy home to chat about all that has inspired her and the business.

She took to her rocking chair in the corner of the living room.  Shouts of “Lyn! how ya doing?” and “How de youngster?” rang through the windows from passersby of the quiet and breezy neighbourhood. She chuckled and shouted her replies. I could see this was the norm and the friendly check-ins from the street reminded me of the close knit villages of Barbados I used to hear of.

Memories of what some persons would recall as ‘village life’ is something that Lynmarie is trying to recreate through Hopscotch Treats. She was inspired by her childhood stories or what she would call ‘Hopscotch memories’. “When we were little – my sister and I – we would make all kinds of fruit drinks. We used to eat real fruits. We used to go grape picking, dunks picking, hog plums, plums, ackees, whatever fruits were available we just be hunting them down. Eat nuff of them ‘til your mouth sore and all kind of things”.

If you read our 10 Interesting Facts about Lynmarie posted earlier, you’d see #9 was that she fearlessly climbs to the top of almost any tree. That is a skill she acquired from young age; when she and her sister were in the mood for some cherry drink or treats.

She rocked in her chair laughing and trying to use her hands to show how huge their cherry tree was. “Listen, that cherry tree was unclimbable but we manage to climb it. Push through branches, get stick in yah face all kind of things. And we would pick cherries and make cherry drink or freeze them in ice cubes”.

It was also there in recalling those moments of fun and adventure that she found the name of her business. “We used to play outside in the road with our friends hopscotch…skipping all kind of games and then we would run inside and have our frozen treats with our friends.”

Although a business advisor wasn’t too fond of the name, to Lynmarie it was a connection between childhood playfulness and adventures and a time where theses local fruits were as relevant and important in our lives. The name has turned out to be fitting in the end as her popsicles have brought the responses she was did-you-knowlooking for.

“Almost every time, say I’m at an event, somebody would say ‘Oh my gosh, this remind me so much of my childhood’ and I go ‘Yesss!’ That’s the whole idea. That is the spirit of the business. That it brings back childhood memories and it creates new childhood memories for children who may not think twice about our fruits”.

Exposing children to our locally grown fruits is something else that Lynmarie wants these deliciously healthy popsicles to do. Watching children eating other frozen treats was another thing that made her think that this is something she had to do.

“I was at a picnic with some of my godchildren and the ice-cream van came around. We bought ice-creams, the children got them and when they were eating I just saw everything blue, green, tongues, lips…it looked horrific to me. It looked unhealthy, it looked wrong…it looked eww. They loved it but I thought, what is that they’re putting in their stomach?”

It’s not only the unhealthy and artificial treats but fruits in general. Most families would prefer to go to a large chain supermarket and buy nothing but imported fruits. She said she knows this because she used to do it too until money became tight.

“I thought, this is what we have. There are good fruits. It’s good stuff and we don’t use them, we don’t value them the way we should. We would rather buy imported grapes rather than eat bajan cherries and bajan cherries have so much vitamin C.”

She began to live what she called a very idealistic ‘eat what you grow’ lifestyle and recycling and composting waste from making the popsicles. Passionate about her pops, Lynmarie strives for the highest quality and this begins with the fruits. She sources them from persons who are committed to the business. When each fruit is in season, they call her and eitblending-the-strawberriesher deliver them or she puts her tree climbing skills to use.

Making something that is healthy, delicious and both children and adults can enjoy is what she loves. Lynmarie said, “I enjoy being in the kitchen. I enjoy making each flavour the bomb. When somebody tastes a pop and goes… “Oh my gosh, this is sooo good!” I’m like “Yeah, that’s right.” I get the most fulfillment out of that”.

Bowls, blenders, pots and fruits were being arranged on the kitchen table. She began wiping down the surfaces and then pulled out the popsicle mold. Over the 6 years she’s been doing this, Lynmarie has been able to refine each recipe and popsicles technique to her satisfaction. “Even if a pop is getting raving reviews, it never makes it to market until I think it’s perfect” – Lynmarie said.

Without revealing too many secrets, she carried me through the process of making her favourite and one of the popular pops; Berry Limey™. She said, “99% of our popsicles are made from locally grown fruit but since strawberry lemonade is my favourite drink I had to compromise”.

That’s the only compromise when it comes to her pops; no artificial colours or flavours are used and she packs each pop with fruit. “People often ask, “Why are your pops four dollars?” and it’s because you’re not getting any dyes, any artificial flavours or a lot of water. You’re literally getting the fruits blended and made into a popsicle”.

As she placed the strawberries in the blender and squeezed the lime juice into a measuring spoon, she spoke of the importance of each pop tasting the same.

“You have a recipe but depending on the fruits you have to tweak it; It’s really [about] quality control making sure that the product is the same all the time because we’re not using artificial things that are predictable – You’re using fruit. So if the rain doesn’t fall, you know, the golden apples won’t come out as big or as juicy or as sweet”.

pouring-the-popsShe also said that she does custom pops for some clients because she realizes a lot more people are getting into the vegan lifestyle and wanting less sugar and no dairy. “People keep asking, “Can you do dairy free? Can you do sugar free?”. So, I do some without sugar like my Mango Passionista™ is sugar free because it’s already sweet ’cause of the Mango.” Out of those requests she also stopped adding dairy to her Sop-a-Licious™ and Coconut Drizzle™ and they still taste good without the milk.

However, she hasn’t left out those who on occasions want to indulge their sweet tooth. She’s created another set of pops in her “Indulgence” line of popsicles with flavours  like strawberry cheesecake and chocolate peanut.

She carefully poured the juice into the mold and then poured some into a glass. Confidently setting it before me with a huge smile. Strawberry and lime was never a combination that I would have ever thought of, but I could definitely see why this was her favourite drink. The sweetness of the strawberry with a subtle tangy taste from the lime made one refreshingly smooth drink and an even better popsicle.

Lynmarie radiates so much pride when speaking of her popsicles and Hopscotch Treats. If you want to try one for yourself, you can find them at Barbadiana in Sky Mall or check out Hopscotch Treats on Facebook.
