‘Dr. Strange’ Film Review

0

dr-strangeDr. Strange is a 2016 comic book film directed by Scott Derrickson who co-wrote the screenplay with C. Robert Cargill. The 14th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it is based on the Marvel comics of the same name, featuring the titular character.

The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton, Mads Mikkelsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong and Benjamin Bratt. Dr. Stephen Strange is the leading neurosurgeon in his field. After a catastrophic car accident leaves him unable to operate and Western medicine has failed him, he journeys to Nepal in search of a different kind of healing and is brought under the tutelage of The Ancient One, who teaches him how to use magic.

This film was perfectly cast. It’s hard to imagine anyone else fulfilling any of these roles as perfectly as these actors did. Every single one of them performed very well. You don’t see them – the actors – on the screen, you see their characters.

The real standouts are Benedict Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton and Mads Mikkelsen.

dr-strange-still-1Cumberbatch did an amazing job as Dr. Stephen Strange. He captured his arrogance, selfishness and self-centered nature as effectively as he did his desperation in the middle of the film and his humility by the end of it, whilst maintaining his intelligence and diligence throughout. He was able to portray the character as he changed over the course of the film and also the things about him that stayed the same.

Strange doesn’t actually go where you think he will by the end of the film, which is a bit of a surprise, but it’s a good thing; it gives him somewhere to go in later films.

He works well as a main character. He’s compelling and you will want to see more of him.

Swinton brought a serenity, poise and grace to The Ancient One that such a character would have, but this is Tilda Swinton. She did it with subtlety. Her acting at no point felt over done.

dr-strange-still-2Even though Kaecilius didn’t really appear in the film that much – given that he is the villain – Mikkelsen shined in every scene he was in and played the character in a way that lent complexity to the motivation and reasoning behind his grand scheme. His performance also made said motivation and reasoning feel organic rather than generic – although in some ways it is – and purposefully tragic in order to make the audience sympathise with him.

However, Marvel continues its streak of having weak villains. He’s not the worst – he’s closer to Loki than he is to Ronan or Zemo – and he has a better motivation than most. But he’s still kind of “meh.” He shows up, does the villain thing and then he’s gone.

He’s a little underdeveloped as are pretty much all of the characters, but they’re developed enough that you’re invested in them and the plot can move forward sensibly.

dr-strange-still-3Rachel McAdams’ character, Christine, felt like she served no real purpose beyond being an emotional anchor for Strange and a kind of, sort of love interest. She did and was not much of anything independent of him. McAdams is great in the role and plays it with her usual charm, but it would have been very much appreciated if she if she hadn’t fallen into the hole that every other love interest in the Marvel Cinematic Universe does; existing solely for the male lead.

This film has a fairly standard origin story that is very competently done. The beginning does feel a bit rushed, however. Like the filmmakers were trying were to cram as much of his pre-sorcery life into as little time as possible in order to dedicate that much more time to his life as a sorcerer.

It’s not made clear how long Strange had been training for. It can be surmised by thinking of the film and how it links to and in the context of the other films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but preferably the audience should not have to do that. The film should be explicit in how much time had passed.

The finale is quite different from other films in this genre. It is more in the vein of that of Guardians of the Galaxy. It was a clever and ingenious way of defeating the villain that was also quite funny.

This film is unexpectedly humorous and has more laugh out loud funny moments than one would think it would. The humour works and doesn’t feel forced.

dr-strange-still-4The CGI is impressive. Especially with the scene in which Strange experiences the multiverse and the look of magic as the sorcerers are using it. The CGI people aren’t as good and look fake, as did his cape (it’s very obvious when it’s CGI and when it’ real), but aside from that it was very well done. It looks real and natural. The visuals are stunning. And trippy.

Dr. Strange is a very good film. It is definitely one of the better ones in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Studios has proven once again that it can take an obscure property with a premise that should not work and make magic – no pun intended. It is by no means perfect, but the good by leaps and bounds outweighs the bad (and that bad isn’t really all that bad to begin with). It fits nicely into the established universe; especially with the series of films it crosses over with in the second post-credits scene. It is a must-see for any fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Once again, EA showed us why they are constantly in the top ten hated corporations in America by doing one of the strangest things I have heard in a long time, banning an entire country. Now saying those words is not strange at all, games have been banned in countries before, and game companies have refused to publish their games (for whatever reason) in other countries. This time however, the twist is more hilarious but scary at the same time: EA banned the entire country of Myanmar from accessing their Origin service, thus blocking gamers from playing games…they already paid for.

Peter Glagowki from Destructoid reached out to EA for comment- this is the response he got in return:

“The short answer here is that this occurred due to the US government trade embargo on Myanmar,” says Kashif A., a customer experience representative for EA. “EA is internally reviewing the situation and looking into whether and when service can be restored to Myanmar residents. It’s unclear to me whether we can do anything for residents of other countries that are still similarly embargoed, but I’ll bring the topic up for discussion internally.”

It was the Reddit user trivial_sublime (great name btw) who first brought this strange bit of news to the attention of us all, since he himself noticed he could not access his account and did some light research.

New US laws have banned Origin in some countries but not only have those sanctions being lifted long before EA went on a banning spree, there are no available lists online documenting which other countries are no longer affect. The face EA blocked all of these users without warning or any signs of refunds should worry those who frequently purchase games with some form of DRM in place. These companies can block you from your own games at any given time, and it seems there is nothing concrete we could do to stop that situation if it ever arose.

This week in better news, Steam announced this week that it will now require publishers to post in-game screenshots of their games. This is to better cut down on rampant practice of false advertising that is currently hard to avoid in the steam store. Valve who is known to have a poor track record when it comes to customer service, has seemingly made this decision in light of games like No Man’s Sky, which have been strongly criticized for advertising features of a product that never came to fruition.

It remains to be seen if this change to the rules will affect the problems Steam is currently facing with false marketing- after all its clear to anyone that Steam Greenlight is now a place filled with asset flips and poorly executed attempted of game developing, which of course they did not intend for.

And finally we bring you another ongoing sale this week, this time GOG has brought us a Halloween sale, with some great discounts, and to remind those of us who do not already know, all games on GOG are free of DRM, so get going and find the sale which is just for you.

Pure Genius S01E02 Recap

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

This episode was better than last week’s. It had heart. I was invested in the characters and their stories. With the patients at least. Not so much with the Bunker Hill staff. They still don’t interest me. But it’s only the second episode.

I would have sympathised with Dr. Wallace and his strained relationship with his son if in last week’s episode I’d felt like he was really compelled to stay at the hospital. I didn’t buy Dermot Mulroney ‘s performance there. It felt like he was just saying his lines. Dr. Wallace staying didn’t feel organic, it felt like it happened because the plot demanded it.

2873623e-92ad-40e6-8186-b8fe4aba2bc2-266-000000bbc5f58beb_tmpI also don’t buy that given the hospital’s resources, their super advanced tech and their access to even more, thanks to James’ money, that they couldn’t have just 3D printed a fully functioning, viable liver. I know that they will have limitations but I really, really don’t buy that they can’t. Even with them saying in the episode itself that such a feat is years off and impossible at this point.

Impossible is their business! Using James’ money to expedite the creation of new tech is what they do! They did it last week! An organ transplant seems so mundane and simple for them. Like something they should be able to fix with the snap of a finger.

But I know nothing about medical science so I can’t really judge the feasibility of them printing a useable organ. Still feels like B.S. that they can’t though.

217e6cef-102c-4589-9d4b-4e06516afcf8-266-000000bc2a82379e_tmpThe second Dr. Brockett blamed the little boy’s mother for his accident, it was clear she didn’t understand the reality of life for people living in those kind of areas and socioeconomic circumstances. I’m glad Dr. Verlaine schooled her on that. But he too was unable to separate his feelings from the case. Perhaps more so than he accused her of.

I do feel like Dr. Brockett proposed the park out of some level of guilt and I found it odd that she proposed it when Dr. Verlaine is the one from said neighbourhood and had to point out the problem to her in the first place. Why couldn’t he have proposed the park? It just seems weird that she did.

Random thoughts:

  1. “Bunker Hill” does not sound like a hospital.
  2. Angie needs to mind her own business.
  3. James needs to come straight out and tell Dr. Brockett how he feels.

Haikyuu!! S03E04 Recap

Kaetan desu! (*≧▽≦)

In our last episode thanks to Tsukishima’s efforts , Karasuma managed to pull off Total Defense tactic against Shiratorizawa Academy. As a game resumed Saori noticesthat the tactic was done so that Ushijima would spike to NIshinoya. Yacchi describes it as mobbing where smaller birds will attack larger birds of prey in groups in order to drive them away, which impresses the alumni. Suga says that even if they aren’t able to completely block the spikes, the Total Defense tactic will allow to fight against Ushijima.

haikyuus03e04-30

Azumame serves and in goes in, even though it is perceived as out by Ohira. The next serve is perceived properly and Shirabu sets up an attack with Ohira as opposed to Ushijima. Instead of going to spike, Ohira doe a feint that Daichi barely gets back over but it quickly dispersed by Tendo, giving Shiratorizawa the point. This now puts Ushijima at the back to serve. When he does so, Karasuno can’t set up an attack because of the force of the serve so they pass it over. The Shiratorizawa team goes to set up an attack. Kageyama is so busy trying to figure out who will spike that he doesn’t notice in time that Shirabu, their setter, is executing a dump. Tsukishima tries to create a one-touch situation but his timing is too late and the set point comes around in Shiratorizawa’s favor. Ushijima serves and under a cover, Tanaka gets Karasuno a point which makes for a deuce. Ushijima is done serving and Hinata is once again rotated in. Before he serves, Tsukishima makes a proposition to Hinata that if Shiratorizawa receives the serve properly, they will attempt to do a quick so he should keep his eyes on their number 5 Tendo. Hinata executes this, and creates another one-touch situation. Tanaka and Hinata believe an attack will be set-up but Kageyama ignores them and does a return dump (stubborn guy), awarding Karasuno with a point.

haikyuus03e04-4haikyuus03e04-5haikyuus03e04-6

The score is now 25-24, with the set point advantage to Karasuno, but Ohira quickly scores, evening out the playing field once more. It is made obvious that there a lot more pressure to score twice as both sides get equal opportunities to score. Ukai says they need to use this time to scrape away at the strengths of the opposing team’s sharpened defense staying calm and enhancing their persistence leading to a tremendous energy output to score two points. Another strong serve from Shiratorizawa and the ball goes long. Kageyama tries to push it over but Tendo keeps up the ball with his foot, creating a chance for Karasuno to score. Hinata runs up to the net and creates a distraction for Tendo and Shirabu, so that Kageyama can set to Tanaka with the minimum amount of blockers and score. (nice decoying Hinata) This actually makes the Shiratorizawa coach call for their first timeout.

haikyuus03e04-7haikyuus03e04-8

The score remains at deuce, with both sides refusing to give up. This time, Shiratorizawa brings in Eita Semi as a pinch server, but he proves he can also take on the role of a setter, and gets Goshiki to score. Semi serves again and the ball goes up short on Karasuno’s side, but that is what Kaegayama was waiting for and he and Hinata successfully execute a quick. Tendo comes back in and several points are exchanged between both sides. As Tsukishima heads back in, he thinks up a plan for overcoming the opponent setter and bringing their arrogance down a notch by continuing to pile on pressure and stress, showing them that they will not get their way so easily as with previous opponents. He creates a one-touch situation and Hinata finally makes a move and scores, breaking Karasuno away from Shiratorizawa.

haikyuus03e04-32haikyuus03e04-3haikyuus03e04-10haikyuus03e04-14

Hinata’s coring of points seems to have irritated Ushiima and he tells Shirabu to gather all the sets towards him alone. Hinata serves again and although the ball seems off, Ushijima spikes it past all three blockers as if there was never a problem. This man is MAD. Goshiki serves at 29-29 each for Shiratorizawa and Karasuno pulls off a synchronized attack and gets the point. Daichi serves and Shiratorizawa tries to set up Ushijima’s spike, but Tsukishima’s timing guides the ball to Nishinoya, which upsets Shirabu.

haikyuus03e04-16haikyuus03e04-17

Karasuno returns it over. Shirabu, frustrated by all the other failed setups, sets up what he thinks will be a winning spike from Ushijima, but this is what Tsukishima was patiently awaiting amidst all the stress that he was piling on. He gets to where he knows Ushijima will aim and shocks everyone by completely blocking Ushijima’s spike back onto his side………………………………………………………………………………………………………….AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They won the set!!!!!!!!!!!!! Remembering the advice he received from the joint training camp, Tsukishima realizes that his moment has finally come around and he becomes enraptured by the sport. Sugawaru apologies to Yamaguchi for his earlier comment as he noticed that he was making a weird face then. Yamaguchi says that despite his looks, Tsukishima hates losing so he knew that he would do something. Hinata tries to congratulate Tsukishima but he tells them to not make a fuss as the game is only now beginning. See you next week!!!!!

 Kaetan desu! (*≧▽≦)

bsdogss02e05

Hurrah! We go back to our original cast!

Naomi and Junichirou Tanizaki are settling into their lunch of curry rice after a small *ahem incident. Naomi ask sher brother why he feels the need to work at the table and he tells her that he has the police records for the interviews of Kyouka, a girl that Atsushi rescued from being killed by the Port Mafia in the first season. As he looks over the records he says that Kyouka was an orphan because her parents were killed and he knows who the culprit is.

bsdogss02e05-45bsdogss02e05-1

At the agency, Atsushi gives Kyouka her first job for the Agency. It involves her delivering an envelope containing some evidence to a judge within a Court. When Atsushi picks up on her determination and asks if she’s excited because it is her first job, Kyouka says says no because her first job was to infiltrate a building and kill two people (uh….right) Nevertheless, she says she’ll do her best.

bsdogss02e05-2bsdogss02e05-3

When they arrive at the courthouse, the guards will not let her through, even though the appointed time is at hand. The judge won’t pick up his phone and Atsushi won’t allow her to use deadly viokence on the guard, so Kyouka sneaks into the Switch room and shoots the circuit with her stun gun, causing a blackout that allows her to get past the guards in the midst of panic. She reaches the judges room and tazes him, which she was not supposed to do, and therefore, gets in a heap of trouble when ll is said and done.

bsdogss02e05-62016-11-03-272016-11-03-28

Kyouka sits outside looking depressed with herself when Atsushi brings her a parfait to cheer her up. He assures her that the president was able to settle things because he is friends with the judge. He notices that Kyouka is still holding onto the phone used to control her ability Demon Snow and says if they can find out more about her ability and she is eventually able to control Demon Snow on her own, Kyouka could use her abilities for good, but she is adamant on never using her ability again. The phone then rings and a voice tells Demon Snow to punish those who teach Kyouka a world of lies. atsushi then finds himself keeling over, blood gushing out of his mouth. Demon Snow has stabbed him with it’s long sword from behind.

bsdogss02e05-4bsdogss02e05-7bsdogss02e05-8

The voice turns out to be a Port Mafia Executive by the name of Kouyou Omisaki who says she has been worried for Kyouka’s safety since the Agency took her in. She wanted to retrieve Kyouka for a long time but she waited on Mori’s permission and is intent on taking her back to the Port Mafia. Atsushi tries to stop them from leaving, but Omisaki’s ability ‘Golden Demon’ activates and stabs him into a pilla with the intention of killing himr. Omisaki says that Mori wants everyone in the Agency killed but because she pleaded for Kyouka’s life to be spared, Mori made an exception.

bsdogss02e05-9bsdogss02e05-12

Kyouka begs Omisaki to stop but that just irritates her even further. Omisaki takes out her own word and puts it to Atsushi’s throat until Kyouka gives in and says she’ll go with her as long as she doesn’t kill Atsushi. They begin to walk away when Kyouka tries to stab Omisaki, making her jump back. Kyouka tells Omisaki that she is never going back to a world where she only knew darkness.

bsdogss02e05-10bsdogss02e05-16bsdogss02e05-17

Elsewhere a caravan carrying two men has slammed into a telephone pole. One of the men complains about Japan’s roads being too narrow. The other elderly looking man says that they just walk to their destination as their luggage will be there any minute and he wants to get it over with so that he can go back inside. Back to the fight, Omisaki reitterates that Kyouka belongs in the darkness, but the latter continues to refuse and the then former reveals that it is Demon Snow who killed Kyouka’s parents. Kyouka has just about lost all hope when a car comes flying their way. It is Doppo Kunikida and Kenji Miyazawa to the rescue after they noticed that Kyouka’s phone take a call by way of a tracer. The two sides are about to face off when the two men from the accident arrive and ask that everyone clear a path for their luggage. Sure enough, a huge item crashes into the ground revealing four individuals who Kunikida identifies as gifted members of the Guild. The screen goes black for a minute and then we see the third set of people are walking away from the scene, leaving nothing short of a bloody mess behind them.

bsdogss02e05-18bsdogss02e05-19bsdogss02e05-20

Fast forward to what looks like an operating table Atsushi opens his eyes to see Doctor Yosano came over him with a chainsaw which scares the crap out of him. It seems that someone discovered there unconscious bodies and took them back to the agency for treatment. The president comes back and ask how they are all doing and then says he’s going out, even against Atsushi’s advice.

bsdogss02e05-22bsdogss02e05-23bsdogss02e05-24

Elsewhere Elise and Mori are socializing over sweets when another Executive Chuya Nakahara, also known as Dazai’s former partner walks in and lets Mori know that Omisaki has been taken hostage. Mori then suggests that they have president of the agency killed so that they can focus on the Guild.

bsdogss02e05-27bsdogss02e05-28bsdogss02e05-29

Back of the agency, Dazai and Atsushi are trying to interrogate Omisaki. She initially refuses because of the Port Mafia’s code, so Dazai kicks Atsushi out of the room so that he can interrogate her in his own twisted way. Meanwhile The president is out by a warehouse outlet. He is speaking to Kunikida about the team relocating to another base when he is ambushed by the assassins that were hired by the Port Mafia. When Atsushi hears about this, he tries to go to the President’s aid but Kunikida stops him and demonstrates that the President is fine, considering his skills.

bsdogss02e05-30bsdogss02e05-31bsdogss02e05-33

The team has successfully relocated and the President lets them know about their two foes and how they must put their all into protecting the Agency. Dazai has a plan ready using guerrilla tactics by splitting them into one defensive and two offensive teams. Their critical goal would be to protect Yosano as she can heal them. They will utilize Tanizaki’s Light Snow and Dazai’s nullification ability to surprise their enemy. The three-way battle is about to begin….

How to Get Away With Murder S03E07 Recap

0

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

LAUREN LUNA VELEZI’m glad we get to see Annalise go to these AA meetings and they’re not just mentioned in passing. Hopefully that means that they’re important and not some throwaway condition of her getting back her license; that she will get the help she needs and we’ll see a change in her for the better.

I’m still waiting for her to take them seriously and have a breakthrough, but, this show being this show, I don’t think very much will change for her.

At this point the meetings seem to be more about President Hargrove than Annalise. I loved the scene in which Hargrove  gave the testimony about her children. I couldn’t take my eyes off of the screen as she was speaking. Lauren Vélez gave an incredible performance. I didn’t really trust Hargrove in the beginning, but I’ve slowly warmed up to her and this scene humanised her. It was great seeing Annalise respond to that later in the episode by giving her the name of a family lawyer. She’s softened to her a bit.

f3795837-97f1-4ee1-b9b9-48329143fea0-266-000000a7a49ccef4_tmpBonnie had to have known what she was doing when she kicked out Frank and, knowing how he is, the potential consequences. But she was hurt and lashed out so it’s understandable.

I think it’s possible that he is the one who burned down Annalise’s house. In the back of my mind I always thought it was him. But out of anger and revenge. Now I think it’s something else.

He’s been rejected by Annalise, rejected by Bonnie and – thanks to his creepily being at Laurel’s while she was sleeping with Wes – by Laurel now too. All of women who are important to him. He is a broken man trying to do anything and everything to get back in their good graces and come home. Not sure how burning down the house would do that but, I can see him heading down that road.

I think, though, that it’s more likely that it was Wes. The only question now is if he’s always hated Annalise this much or if she does something in the next few episodes to push him so far.

b4cca82f-4dc9-46ab-80d4-96ae89655109-266-000000a7c6078aef_tmpSince the flash forward revealed that he sold Annalise to the police  as the person who burned down the house, his refusal to off load on her when the other four did looks more suspicious.

It’s true that he’s the only one of the Keating Five who’s ever been truly honest with Annalise about how they feel about her. The other four complain to each other about her, but they never really let her know exactly how they felt. Not in the way they did in this episode.

When you couple Wes’ refusal with Laurel writing his name when she regains consciousness, it pretty much looks like all signs point to him. Which may be a little too obvious and, this show being this show, could all be misdirection.

It could be either him or Frank. Both have their reasons. And I am starting to think that, no matter who the arsonist is, Frank is under the sheet.

As relates to the case this week, it did not surprise me that Edith poisoned herself and framed her children. She was such a mean-spirited bitch. How can she not see how or why her children would hate her? Does she not realize how terrible she is?

And the new kid comparing Annalise to her? Firstly, I thought she knocked him down a few pegs. Why is he still on her case and what is his problem with her? Secondly, Annalise is not nearly as bad as Edith. Annalise actually cares about her “kids.”

Random thoughts:

  1. Have they ever shown Annalise eating as much/often as they are this season?
  2. Asher and Michaela teasing Oliver is the cutest.
  3. Wes and Laurel aren’t wasting any time.
  4. You should have just said you didn’t see Charles, Wes.
  5. Nate wasn’t shirtless in this episode.
  6. Conniver returns!

How to Get Away With Murder airs Thursdays at 10 PM on ABC.

GoPro Earnings are Down

0

Who would have thought GoPro Inc. would be in financial troubles- certainly not to the extent that was revealed this week. After releasing the much talked about karma drone and Hero5 camera, GoPro’s quarterly earnings still took a massive dive to $240.6 million compared to the same period last year where they earned $400 million. Even though the company is obviously bleeding money, the CEO Nicholas Woodman seemed optimistic about the future, saying:

“Looking forward to 2017, we expect to return to profitability, driven by the strength of our new products.”

Woodman also mentioned how the company had launched fewer cameras and drones this year due to production issues, these issues unfortunately may keep them from meeting the huge demand during the upcoming holiday season.

Years ago GoPro was riding high on great reviews and high demand from their product portfolio, however now that the market has settled down, and other competitors have entered the space, investors in the company are now fearful of even more declining profits down the line. Here is hoping profits pick back up in the next quarter; would be a shame to see this much loved brand go away.

 Kaetan desu! (*≧▽≦)

In our last episode of Kiss Him, Not Me, summer vacation was now commencing and although the boys wanted to invite her on dates, Kae already had all of her otaku activities planned ahead of them so with Christmas vacation coming up, they thought they could hold a party on Christmas Eve, right? WRONG! Kae shoots down their dreams telling them well she has to go to the winter Comiket, even though she went during the summer. Comiket is the world’s largest market for fan-made, self-published works, including games and other artwork, but mostly comics. The events are held in Tokyo Big Sight in December and August of each year and typically span over a 3 day period. Mutsumi then suggest that they all accompany Kae to Comiket and have a party afterwards, to which there are no objections.

Early EARY EARLY the following morning at stupid o’clock, the boys meet Kae who is all pumped up to go, in contrast to the boys who are clearly NOT USED TO THIS. The boys believe that they are going to be the first people on the train but they couldn’t be more wrong when they reach the Tokyo Big Sight, it is littered with people all heading to Comiket. They then come to a realization that that’s why the stations on the way there and the train itself was packed, even at that time of the morning, and there were staff at the stations screaming out orders.

kisshimnotmee04-9kisshimnotmee04-10kisshimnotmee04-11

The boys then discover they have to wait another two and a half hours before the doors to open and they quickly become cold but Kae was prepared and gives them all pocket warmers, which satisfied them. Little did they know that they’d have to wait one extra hour before entering so they didn’t actually get inside until 11 o’clock even though the doors opened at 10AM. Naturally they were exhausted once they finally entered. Since the boys were there to keep Kae company, they decided to help her with all of her shopping and split up into pairs, Nanashima and Igarashi in one pair, and Shinomiya and Mutsumi in another pair. Igarashi and Nanashima immediately get stereotyped as a couple by some fujoshi as they go through trying to make it seem that they’re purchasing the comics for someone else. Mutsumi is admiring an artists’ work, when Shinomiya finds and drags him away. He is clearly uncomfortable with the concept of Comiket and to top it off, he always seems to be nearly losing Mutsumi to the crowds.

It is now 1:50 p.m and Kae has finished her part of the shopping and is at the meet-up point by the cosplayers area. While she waits on the others, a photographer in the area starts taking pictures of her and making her feel uncomfortable. This goes on for a bit until a beautiful cosplayer points out his bad manners and makes him apologize. Kae is thanking the stranger for their help and admiring their cosplay when the boys finally arrive. When the cosplayer sees that Kae has company, they politely make their exit, but not before giving Kae a hand-kiss, which freaks the boys out. Kae explains the situation to the boys and they apologize for not making it sooner, but Kae is insistent on apologizing because she feels that she forced them to go with her and she thanks them again. The end of the day is at hand and the group begins their journey towards the Christmas party that the boys were so looking forward to. But the traffic heading back is just as bad as it was going up, so by the time they arrive for the party everyone except for Kae has expended all of their energy. On the closing ceremony for the second term of the school term, A-chan and Kae are discussing the Comiket shenanigans. When Kae mentions the beautiful cosplayer that she met, SURPRISE! they are actually a student at the school and A GIRL!!!!!

Nishina Shima is a first year student, who Kae mistakenly thought was a male cosplayer. Shinomiya describes her as a situation known as the Takarazuka effect, meaning someone who can act out both a male as well as a female role, without being conflicted by one or the other. As such, Nishina is extremely popular with girls across all of the years. It turns out that Kae and Nishina have a lot of common interests, and Nishina wishes to take advantage of that, so she invites Kae over to her house for what sounds like a sleepover. Nanashima realizes the danger of that situation and invites himself and the others along. Nishina agrees to this, as long as the boys adhere to one condition, to which they agree even though they don’t know what it is. They seem to be more concerned with not leaving Kae alone with Nishina for a minute.

The group arrives at Nishina’s house and it is HUUGE! Nishina shows them all her room dedicated to her figure and Japanese castle collection, which impresses both Kae and Mutsumi. Nishina then takes them to another room, this time dedicated to all of her hand-made costumes. She then compliments Shinomiya’s acting skills and how beautiful he looked in the dress at the play. Boy number two down. She then takes the group to her most prized room, a library full of manga, novels and BL comics. When Kae picks out a comic that even she doesn’t have, Nishina wastes no time in letting them know that on top of doing all of that, she still finds time to draw manga, and she is the artist Kae admires the most. (OVERKIIIIIIILLLLLL)

To prove her skills, Nanashima sketches a picture of ShIon to prove that she is indeed, the artist. Nanashima tries to compete, but is no good. Nevertheless, Kae is still happy with his attempt, so Shinomiya and Mutsumi attempt it as well (just when Nanashima thought he gained some ground, poor guy) Nishina then invites the group to the final room where she would like the boys to fulfill her request. She wants to use them as models for BL material, which starts off wonderful (I had a few moments as well KYA! ><), until she asks them to rest their head in the other’s lap. That is considered an ultimately intimate way of showing affection in Japan, so naturally, the boys express their discomfort with undertaking such a task.

Kae decides that may be they will feel more inclined to do it if the two girls how it is done. She demonstrates with Nishina and gets a little TOO comfortable with the role. When she realizes that she is taking it too far, she tries to pull back, embarrassed at her actions but it is too late. Nishina gets caught up in the moment and kisses Kae ON THE LIPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nanashima pulls Kae back, accusing her of taking her joking around too far, but Nishina insists that it isn’t a joke and that the boys should take her seriously as a rival before a problem occurs. ERMAIGAWWWWWWD! I need next week’s episode to come out……Is it next week yet? See you next week V_V R.I.P my heart….

We pick up from where we left off last week with the next meeting for the character design. The author’s editor is pressing the anime team for answers on the corrections for the key visual. The line producer said that Kuzu told them to go with that style, but because they used a separate individual not on the actual team from the president’s connections to create the PV, it didn’t come out the way the author intended it to. The mangaka’s side is concerned with the quality of the key visuals and the staff are concerned with the amount of time to apply those corrections and focus on the actual show. Kuzu reassures everyone that key visuals aren’t as important as their only part of the promotional material.

Elsewhere, the staff is getting ready to begin the first recordings for the anime and all of the main cast have arrived. Koto and Yae formally introduce themselves to Momoka and Kazuha as they enter the recording booth. This is considered to be a sign of respect to those who have been in the industry longer than you. Chitose is under the impression that because she has the lead role, she does not have to do anything, and that everyone else should be greeting her. It is only after Yae’s insistence that she as a newbie greet everyone, that Chitose finds out from Momoka that a newbie with a lead role is supposed to have done their greetings before everyone else.. (Awkwaaaard)

Kuzu, Director Oihata and the author of the light-novel come into the booth and introduce themselves and then test recordings begin. Chitose is obviously smug with her lead role, but Momoka looks concerned for her behavior. Elsewhere, Gojo talks to Momoka’s mother who tells him about a rumor that the person in charge of the series production quit the project halfway through the production stages because the author didn’t want to cooperate and the person in charge of each episode ended up taking over. This could create problems for the script but she assures Gojo that it has nothing to do wih the seiyuu and their managers.

Back in the recording booth, it is now 10:00PM and recording is done for the day. Chitose wants to head out for drinks, but everyone has other plans and Gojo then tells her that she has to stay behind for corrections. The following evening, Chitose is taking up too much time to voice her lines correctly, so the director skips her and does Momoka and Kuzuha’s lines first as they have to leave, and they’ll correct Chitose’s lines later on. Chitose doesn’t seem to want to understand that she wasn’t chosen for her talents, until Gojo spells it out for her. She is a pawn in the project because of the plans so she has to work harder than a person that would have been chosen in order to produce results. This ends up being a real downer for Chitose. The next day at recording, she realizes that Gojo was right about her acting when she does a line and the staff take too long to get back to her. When she goes to him for advice, Gojo tells Chitose to speak to the sound director so she can clear things up. As they walk home, Gojo asks Chitose about her meeting with the sound director., but Chitose says she didn’t understand anything that he said, and all he spoke about was her character’s personality. This girl doesn’t seem to want to understand that in order to understand how to act a part out properly, the seiyuu cannot rely on others to do their job for them. They should be able to do their own research and apply it effectively to their work. (Her personality is starting to piss me off honestly -_-)

gnumbere03-2gnumbere03-3

The next day, Chitose has arranged a meetup with Momoka in a cafe where she asks her for tips on improving her voice acting skills. Her reasoning behind inviting Momoka is Chitose has no one else she can talk to, because of her terrible personality, which Momoka wastes no time in calling her out on. Momoka says that but she takes from previous characters that she has voiced and adjusts herself to suit but since Chitose has only being assigned as background characters till now, that then she should use another piece of work as an example. When Gojo gets home, he finds Chitose in the living room with a bunch of reference DVDs and notes, which puts a smile on his face to see that she is trying to better herself.

gnumbere03-5

The next day, everyone notices that Chitose’s acting has vastly improved and because of that, recordings finished up early for a change. Momoka invites Chitose and the rest of the main cast to go out afterwards and even Kazuha agrees to join them for a while. While they celebrate, Kuzuha and Momka discuss Chitose’s acting for today while washing their hands. Although it has gotten better, Kuzuha says that Chitose’s performance was dull. Momoka knows that a dull performance is what the staff everyone wants so she wonders to herself anxiously what the problem is with that. And with that, we’ll see you for the next episode!

Girlish Number E02 Recap

0

Kaetan desu! (*≧▽≦)

Chitose is still reeling in excitement from getting the lead in a new light-novel adapted anime series. Elsewhere, in a production meeting, things aren’t looking good for Kuzu and co. The mangaka (author of the book) seems to have concerns with the vamped-up design of the characters, but Kuzu says it isn’t that bad and the Director agrees with him. The President also sort of agrees, only stating he agrees with it because it’s what the line producer decided to go with. The President says if they have to start over it’ll take up time, but even so the author is still not 100% happy and would like the anime staff to consider his opinions as well since it is his book.

Kuzu says even if they agree to the authors’ demands there is not much time left before the broadcast. Even if they were to reverse the advertising schedule, they would like to at least show the promotional video at the kickoff event. They then come to a conclusion that they’ll bring in a separate individual to make the PV. This will now give the staff enough time to work on altering the character design for the actual series.

Elsewhere, Chitose arrives at a studio and we meet one of her co-workers, Yae. The chichat about their work, but Chitose is too busy being smug about her new role. She heads to a meeting with Gojo to meet the rest of the main cast. Surprise! Yae is part of the cast! There is also another girl who Chitose has never seen before and she introduces herself as Koto Katakura with this distinct Kansai dialect that I love to bits.

gnumbere02-9
Koto (LEFT) & Yae-chan (RIGHT)

Chitose appears gobsmacked at her situation as she probably thought that she was the lead heroine. Gojo tells her off for not reading the original work when he told her to because the show is a harem with five heroines in total. Chitose becomes pissed off and thinks that Yae was plotting against her to take her role. (paranoid much?)

gnumbere02-10

Kuzu and some other people join the meeting and inform the three girls that day will be forming a special idol unit and making a CD debut to promote the anime and performing a in concert. The meeting finishes and while heading out to the launch party, Chitose asks Gojo to tell her the other cast members. It turns out that Momoka and Kazuha from the previous episode will be joining them. Because Momoka is well-known in the industry, just the fact that Chitose is even acquainted with her amazes the other two girls. We find out that Koto is older than the other two, even as a newbie but Chitose is showing off her acquaintance with Momoka by messaging her, but Momoka blows her off.

gnumbere02-11gnumbere02-1

At the party we find out that there are even more big names joining the cast which makes cast list seem very appealing but those actors are only going to be guest starring in one episode. Koto is a bit worried that all these big names will force them into shadows but Kuzu reassures her that they will stand out because the author himself chose them. Later on, Kuzu gives the key visuals to Assistant Producer Towada. The minute he looks, Towada Immediately voiced his concerns on the quality for the price they paid (1,600 YEN, which works out at around $15.27US) Cruz tries to motivate him into taking out the best parts, which Towada will do, but he is still worried.

gnumbere02-12

The next morning, Momoka and Kazuha join Chitose, Koto and Yae for a meeting on the proceedings for the kick-off event. Yae is super nervous as this is her first ever event. As they get their hair and make-up done for the shoot, Momoko and Kazuha have a conversation that intrigues us. Kazuha doesn’t enjoy doing events like these and wan        ts to be taken seriously as an actor. Momoka just lets her know that doing events is part of the job and that she should just do what she’s supposed to.

gnumbere02-15gnumbere02-13

We fast forward to the event which goes off without a hitch. We find out at that Koto is a little bit of an anime enthusiast, as she does illustration herself. In the green room, the girls are discussing their feelings on the event. Kuzuha is dissatisfied, as nothing has been recorded and no key visuals have been assigned as of yet, due to the anime staff having to revamp the design at the author’s concern. Kuzuha and Momoka then leave and Kuzu gets called away by a phone call from the editor-in-chief of the light-novel so Yae, Chitose and Koto decide to go and celebrate by themselves.

gnumbere02-16

As they reminisce about their days-in-training, Koto tells them that she is no longer in contact with anyone from her class. Yae then tells Chitose that she went to a reunion with other students from their voice-training school. Chitose is surprised by this, because she wasn’t told about it. (That’s what you get for having a haughty attitude)

gnumbere02-14

The scene cuts to yet another meeting on character design for the anime staff, which Kuzu is uncomfortable with and the author shows a look of frustration, and then the episode ends. See you next time!

Side note, I love the ending, it’s very cute.
