Pure Genius S01E08 Recap

0

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

The pair surgery idea would have been a lot more impressive to me if I hadn’t already seen it done on Grey’s Anatomy.

Surprise, surprise; someone annoyed me more than Angie did this week, even though Angie was back to be her regular insufferable self. And that person was Dr. Brockett.

I see no reason why she can’t just explain – and maybe not even explain, just simply tell – Dr. Verlaine about James asking her out if the fact that it happened as causing her to police her behaviour at work, where James would be able to see them. If she is going to give a relationship with him a try then it would be fair to make him aware of that.

The scene in which she tried to make Dr. Wallace coerce Lauren into remaining in the chain and the scene which followed it in which Brandon’s parents begged her to do everything she could to save him, needed to be switched. The latter should have come before the former.

I say this because, as the episode was edited, there was hardly any foundation for Dr. Brockett to be so desperate as to push Dr. Wallace so hard to convince Lauren to stay in the chain. There was nothing that happened preceding it to justify her sentiments or her actions. She’d barely interacted with boy. And for a good chunk of the episode I believed that her frantic behaviour concerning the case, was due to her redirecting her emotions about the love triangle between her, James and Dr. Verlaine. She was a little unreasonably pushy.

Granted, if she hadn’t coerced Lauren into remaining in the chain, Brandon would not have had his surgery and she would not have figured out how to get the artificial kidney to work, thereby giving Lauren’s mother enough time to wait for a new kidney and her original donor would not have been so grateful to Lauren that she decided to donate her kidney to Lauren’s mother after she gave birth.

So ultimately it worked out, but I still think Dr. Brockett was out of line and very unprofessional.

As relates to artificial kidney, why did it take her so long to come up with the solution to use the old, damaged kidney to prevent the membranes in the artificial one from breaking? She was supposed to be on Brandon’s surgical team, which means that she should have known that they were going to do a piggy back surgery for him. It also felt like a fairly simple solution that should not have been that hard to come up with.

The episode got better as it went on. The ending was the best part; it was a happy ending that was heartfelt and touching and neatly wrapped up the episode. Pretty much everything that happened in the episode paid off in the end.

Random thoughts:

  1. Fucking Angie…
  2. Dammit Brockett! What the hell are you doing?!
  3. Dr. Brockett: “I didn’t coerce her.”  YES YOU DID!
  4. Fire her Wallace!
  5. I hope Dr. Brockett does not turn into another Izzie Stephens.
  6. Dr. Verlaine: “…I think what you did today was amazing.” Don’t encourage her! You’re only trying to get back in her pants.
  7. I was expecting a celebrity, not a prisoner.
  8. That artificial kidney is huge.
  9. I was hoping the prisoner would have changed his mind and met his recipient.

Pure Genius returns to CBS on January 1st. There will be no more recaps when it returns.

America’s Next Top Model C23E01 Recap

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

ANTM is back! I’ve been watching this show and loving it since the very first cycle premiered all the way back in 2003. It hasn’t always been perfect – or particularly good – but I love it either way and I’ve been loyal. I’m so glad it was revived on VH1 and that we’ve gotten a new cycle.

I’m glad Tyra made an appearance in the first episode, even though it was brief, because it really isn’t ANTM without her. I hope this means that she will photograph the girls at some point. And speaking of girls, I’m kind of lamenting the fact that we don’t have boys on the show anymore.

One thing that stood out to me is that even though it’s supposed to have been “revamped” not that much has changed. Even the music is pretty much the same kind of music that’s always been used on the show. There really wasn’t much of a major overhaul and I am eternally grateful for that.

I felt like it was a bit unfair that, unlike in previous cycles, the girls were carried to their go-sees and didn’t need to find their own way around town with a map – and maybe a taxi drive if they were so lucky. But it did happen in the first episode this time around and thereby had far more girls participating. So I guess, production wise, doing it that way was easier and simpler. Probably cheaper too.

And of course, there was drama.

Quei was unnecessarily mean to Courtney (who kind of looks like last cycle’s Courtney doesn’t she?). I understood why she behaved the way she did when she revealed she was trans and talked about herself a little bit, however. I was glad the two of them quashed their beef before one could even really start and so easily and without more shouting, insults and drama.

Cody and Tash really cannot expect to go through this entire competition – or this industry for that matter – as a matched set. It’s a cute gimmick and all but that’s not realistic. I was surprised Philipp Plein didn’t chew them out after their little pronouncement that you have to take them as a pair, considering how brutal he was before.

I’m glad Starr didn’t make it into the house. Sure, the show is edited and what we see isn’t particularly close to reality, but if her statement of “I should be in there with her” was about Kyle then she didn’t deserve to compete. She is not there to find herself a girlfriend. If the competition was the most important thing to her then she would never have even thought that. Clearly her priorities are not in order. Girl bye.

I’m a little peeved that Ashley Graham is on the panel of judges but there isn’t a single plus-sized contestant in the competition. And there haven’t really been any in the last few cycles to be honest. Not that they should include one for the sake of it or as a token, but I feel like maybe there is a little disconnect there.

Rita Ora did a good job as host, I guess. I didn’t dislike or find fault with her performance but she didn’t really stand out. This was only one episode though so we shall see how she does going forward. It’s the same for the judges really; none of them brought any personality to the show, except for Law Roach – who I feel like is supposed to be the next Ms. Jay but we’ll see – who brought a teeny bit, but not that much.

My frontrunners at the moment are Kyle, Paige, Justine, Coryanne and Binta. As is usual with this show though, that’s likely to change.

Overall I was not disappointed. I really enjoyed the episode and am looking forward to the rest of the cycle. I absolutely loved the titles at the end.

America’s Next Top Model airs Mondays at 10pm on its new home VH1.

Ch’an Wishes Us a Merry and Soulful Christmas at Mahalia’s Corner

0

The Mahalia’s Corner Christmas Special was held this past Sunday, December 11th, at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre. It was the last Mahalia’s Corner of the year, following a series of shows that took place every Sunday from September 4th until October 2nd.

As someone unfamiliar with the event who had only heard about it this year, I was not aware of how anticipated it was until I arrived approximately half an hour before the show began and was met with a line that stretched from the Hibiscus Room of the Centre, into the main foyer and out the door into the car park. Here is a map of the LESC for reference. There was quite a notable turnout for this event.

The show did start late, however, this wasn’t particularly bothersome as the wait time was not particularly lengthy, the Christmas music that was being played was infectious and the show itself more than made up for it.

2 Mile Hill opened the show, performing a few Christmas songs along with original music from their latest EP, Uncovered (which was on sale at the show); most notably “Billion Dollars” – for which lead singer Mahalia Cummins asked the band to stop playing in order to deliver a portion of the lyrics as spoken word, so that the audience could really listen to and understand the lyrics; it was effective – and “Let it Go (Le Te Te)” – after Cummins demonstrated the song’s accompanying dance, the audience enthusiastically performed it and sang along.

They also performed their original Christmas Song “We Don’t Have Snow.”

I was as unfamiliar with 2 Mile Hill – beyond knowing their name – and their music as I was with Mahalia’s Corner. As such, this was the first time I had seen them perform live and I was very impressed. So much so that I purchased Uncovered at the end of the show.

Mahalia has amazing stage presence, she is a very good performer and has a wonderful voice.

The open mic that followed was an eye opening showcase of the wealth of talent that exists in Barbados, as it was at the Dae 1 release party and some of the performers from that event performed here as well.

There was also a surprise guest performance by the band Cover Drive. Them and their music I am familiar with and it was the first time I saw them perform live as well. I only got to see the last song, “Grapefruit Perrier”, because I left and came back right before they performed it. I liked what I did manage to see.

And last but by no means least, was Ch’an.

Previously a spotlight artist during this season of Mahalia’s Corner, she was the featured artist of the night. She performed soulful, jazzy renditions of well known Christmas songs with a twinge of Caribbean flavour; “The Christmas Song,” “Santa Baby”, “Little Drummer Boy” and “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus.”

She also performed her original songs “Body” and “My Story”; the latter of which features Young D but she performed along with Mahalia Cummins at the show.

The audience absolutely loved her, responding with zeal and excitement and demanded an encore performance of Sia’s “Chandelier” (which she had performed at her spotlight performance Corner and for which she is now famous). And it’s not hard to see why.

She as an incredibly powerful voice and can belt like nobody’s business. She is a strong vocalist and like Mahalia, she has amazing stage presence. The decision to have to her close the show was a good one.

Head over to our Facebook page to see photos from the event and to view short snippets of Ch’an’s performances of “My Story” and “Chandelier.”

DJ Puffy Advances To Thre3Style World Finals

0

DJ Puffy made history earlier today by becoming the first Barbadian and Caribbean national to advance to the finals of the Red Bull Thre3style World DJ Championship.

The competition – which is in its seventh year and was started in 2010 – visited twenty countries across Europe, Asia/Pacific and the Americas for its World Tour of National Final Live events from May through October. Of the more than one thousand DJs that registered, twenty-one won the all-expenses paid trip to the World Final along with “3 regional Wild Cards”, of which DJ Puffy was one.

As stated on the competition’s website:

“These were selected from the first time ever global invitation to participate open to all Djs from non hosting National Final countries.”

The DJs are tasked with completing a fifteen minute set, in which they must use music from three different genres. They are judged on originality, skills, track selection, personality and crowd response.

Puffy competed against five other DJs; DJ Stresh from France, DJ A from Brasil, DJ Ches from Spain, DJ Cross from Belgium and DJ Delta from Italy. After his advancement was announced he said:

“This is monumental not just for me, but for the whole region.”

Puffy expressed his gratitude for the support he received in a Facebook post.

The World Finals will take place this Saturday, December 17th at 11:00 AST (aka Atlantic Standard Time; the time zone Barbados is in). It will be live streamed on Red Bull Thre3style World DJ Championship’s website.

Microsoft will compete with Google Home and Amazon Echo

0

Today Microsoft released a short sneak peek of its plans of taking on Amazon’s Echo and Google’s Home assistants. Harman Kardon is set to partner with the tech company to help develop the speaker device that will have full Cortana integration.

Microsoft had this to say about the upcoming device on their blog:

We believe that everyone deserves a personal assistant. One to help you cope as you battle to stay on top of everything, from work to your home life. Calendars, communications and commitments. An assistant that is available everywhere you need it, working in concert with the experts you rely on to get things done.

We’re at the beginning of a technological revolution in artificial intelligence. The personal digital assistant is the interface where all the powers of that intelligence can become an extension of each one of us. Delivering on this promise will take a community that is equally invested in the outcome and able to share in the benefits.

Also on their blog, they announced the ‘Cortana Skills Kit.’ This API is designed to help developers integrate their app functionality into the upcoming device.

The Cortana Devices SDK will allow OEMs and ODMs to create a new generation of smart, personal devices – on no screen or the big screen, in homes and on wheels.

There’s no official release window for the Cortana based product, but more word on the device is expected to be released in the upcoming months.

Adaeze Gives Rousing Performance At Dae 1 Release Party

0

The release party for Barbadian musician Adaeze’s latest album, Dae 1, was held at The Mews Restaurant in Holetown on December 10th.  The album and its artwork were produced and created by Adeaze herself and she wrote the music. At the party drop cards were given to attendees, which allowed them to download the full album from her website for free.

There was a very relaxed atmosphere at the release party and it was in a very intimated setting; it was a small space and there was no stage for the performers, which worked because there was no separation between them and the crowd and it made the experience feel more personal.

The guest performers, up and coming artistes Lee Allen, Torian, Lexi, Alix Cage and Sonny Meraki, delivered subtle but entertaining performances. They weren’t spectacular (in that they weren’t huge and dramatic), but their immense talent was evident, not just as singers but as songwriters as well; along with covers they performed their own original music.

The party really started when Adaeze took up the mic. She was electric.

She had enough energy for everyone in the room – and it was a crowded room – and so much charisma and personality that she more than succeeded in getting the crowd involved in and enthusiastic about her performance. So much so that the crowd cheered for her to grace them with one more song when she reached the end of her set.

She regularly interacted with the crowd – at times eliciting laughter – and actively engaged with two tourists who identified themselves as Scott and Harry , who eagerly jumped in to dance along with Adaeze as she performed. She even dedicated her single “Foreigner” to them.

Also a spoken word poet, Adaeze gifted the crowd with a recitation of one of her poems that was cleverly and brilliantly written, powerful and moving.

‘Moana’ Film Review

0

Moana is a 2016 Disney 3D computer animated musical film starring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Auli’i Cravalho in her acting debut. Written by Jared Bush and directed by  Ron Clements and John Musker with co-direction by Don Hall and Chris Williams and music by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foa’i and Mark Mancina, the film tells the story of the titular character, Moana, a teenage Polynesian girl from the island of Motunui, where her father is chief. Her long standing love of the ocean conflicts with her father’s strictest law; never to sail past the reef. When her island is threatened, she must disobey her father and sail beyond the reef to find the demigod, Maui.

Johnson is perfectly cast as Maui. Beyond the fact that his facial expressions and mannerism were incorporated into the character’s animation, Johnson’s energy and personality are very well suited to a character like this. Hearing his voice come out of Maui’s mouth is in no way disconcerting. Johnson gives Maui so much life and portrays him with a charisma that makes the audience not dislike him even when he is being unlikeable.

Maui’s arrogance and bravado are counteracted by his wit and humour. He’s a character that grows on you very quickly and in no time at all you forget that you’re listening to Johnson and just see the character.

The veil between voice actor and character is much more readily lifted when it comes to Moana and Cravalho, pretty much because Cravalho is an unknown.  She does very well in her first roles as a voice actress – as an actress in general – and it’s easy to see why she was chosen for the role. Cravalho lends an authenticity to Moana that makes her feel like real person and makes her moments of strength and weakness equally believable (which is also to the credit of the screenwriter). Moana is stubborn, determined and fearless and in some ways reminiscent of Ariel’s daughter Melody from The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea; for obvious reasons.

Carvalho has a beautiful singing voice that gives power and emotion to every musical number she is a part of.

“We Know The Way”, “You’re Welcome” and “Shiny” are the best songs from the film. “We Know The Way” is reminiscent of songs from The Lion King and Pocahontas and it’s finale at the very end is a soaring number that grips your heart and is a superb note – pun intended – on which to end the film. The latter two are fun and catchy feel good songs. “I Am Moana” is as inspiring and assuring as Frozen“Let it Go”, but it doesn’t exactly have the punch that that song does; perhaps because Cravalho – as good a singer as she is – does not have the voice that Idina Menzel does.

The music in the film on the whole is amazing. It’s memorable and emotive. From the soundtrack to the score, the songs are upbeat, uplifting and infectious and endow the film with a feeling of adventure.

The film is at times self-referential to Disney Princess tropes for the sake of humour. At one point it even gets a little Mad Max: Fury Road and even goes so far as to use a musical cue from that film. It was an interesting little easter egg. The action sequences are kinetic, but the film does slow down at times for the sake of story, plot and character development (which are delivered in info dumps). The down time, however, acts as a breather between the action set pieces. It’s not exactly a bad thing that the film slows down, but you definitely feel it when it does.

At it’s core, the film is about discovering and embracing who you are, which isn’t too far off from the usual message(s) of Disney Princess films; more so those from the 90’s and onward than those from the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. It doesn’t really feel like a modern Disney film in the current Disney Revival era. It feels more like a Disney Renaissance film (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Herules etc). So if these newer Disney films have been, for you, lacking the heart that Disney films from your childhood had, this film definitely has it.

This film looks incredible. The visuals are stunning and the animation is flawless. There is a particular visual at the end of the film that is beautifully rendered and worthy of note.

Moana is in keeping with Disney’s track record of making extraordinary films that are instant classics. It is perhaps the best of their recent princess films and definitely one of the best of all of the films in its Revival era and in their canon on the whole. Anyone who calls themselves a Disney fan should not hesitate to watch this film and they will certainly love it. Parents will enjoy seeing it as much as their children. It excels in every creative and technical area of film-making. It absolutely deserves a nomination for the upcoming Academy Awards.

Do yourself a favour and listen to the soundtrack.
