The OA S01E04 Recap

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

Oh, so Prairie did die. I thought she would have been knocked out at the most. But then again this is a show about dying.

I knew from the moment Khatun told her that she needed to make a fair trade for the bird that her father would be what she needed to sacrifice. Now I’m not sure if he’s dead or if what she saw was simply an illusion of him. It did seem like if she chose not to take the bird that that meant she was choosing to stay dead and if staying dead means getting to see her father again, then that means he’s dead. Which in any other show would be a bad thing, but here death is not the end.

I was rolling my eyes the entire time Hap was sitting next to the bed nursing her and telling her how worried he was he would lose her. He hit her in the head. With a gun. Hard enough to kill her. He could not have cared that much. And he apologised too and was sincere about it.

I did not think that she would regain her sight so soon or obtain her higher knowledge already. I expected that to happen when she finally escaped and that she would gain the knowledge incrementally over time as she died again and again.

I was glad to see that Prairie kind of opened up to the FBI agent, but at the same time I’m wary of her getting comfortable enough to tell him maybe not everything, but, perhaps too much. He does seem genuine and  I do believe that he is there for her and not the bureau, but I still think that she should keep her little rescue mission as much to herself as possible.

Of course Prairie and Homer’s plan would not have worked perfectly and they wouldn’t have found out the truth about the experiment easily. But three years? That is a really long time and they just kept trying over and over and over again. That is determination and persistence to the highest degree, especially considering that Homer died in one of the most painful ways possible every single time and had to learn to not react or panic when drowning. That would have been incredibly difficult.

It was no surprise to the viewer that Hap was killing them. That, I think, was obvious to us but not to them.

After that lengthy struggle I was overjoyed when Homer finally did it. I’m curious as to why his in-between-life-and-death space is different from Prairie’s and why he didn’t see Khatun. Is the space personalised for the individual or something along those lines? And his has people that chase him apparently?

I thought at first that because he was in a different space that meant that he hadn’t been successful and since Khatun wasn’t there and she didn’t give him the fish that eating it didn’t work. But it looks like she doesn’t need to be there.

Random thoughts:

  1. The blind one is the most troublesome. That’s what you get for underestimating her.
  2. Hap: “I was worried about you.” You hit her over the head with a gun!
  3. Is she going to let anyone know she can see?
  4. She did.

America’s Next Top Model C23E02 Recap

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

We got our first and second runway challenges this week. I was a little disappointed that Benny Ninja didn’t come on to coach the girls along with Stacey Mackenzie in the first one, but voguing was involved so that softened the blow. The best performer in the first challenge for me was Binta (who proved her prowess on the runway last week) and the worst was Justine.

Kyle is not as bad as she thinks she is. Even before she did the coaching with Stacey (and it did help that she went up against Justine in the first challenge). She was actually worst during the coaching, but not by much, because she was so stiff. That lack of confidence likely hampered her performance when she was being coached. Like Stacey said, you need to believe in yourself, and perhaps if Kyle had she would have been more relaxed and done better there.

But it all paid off in the end because Kyle ended up winning the second challenge. She brought her own style and personality to her walk, much like she had in the first challenge and that is what Law and Zendaya loved. She may not be the best walker in the house – and again, she’s not even particularly bad to begin with – but she just needs to bring that confidence and put her own stamp on it and she will do fine.

I was surprised she was so low down in the rankings for the photo shoot. She was one of two people who were told that all of her photos were perfection. So that confused me. She, Binta, Tash, Cody, Tatiana and Courtney had the best pictures in my opinion. I did not like Marissa’s as much as the judges did.

I felt so bad for Cody when she went up for judging and just broke down crying before anyone said anything to her. She was incredibly nervous and scared. I can sympathise with that, but if she is going to continue on in the competition and work in this industry, she needs to toughen up. The fashion industry is notoriously brutal.

I’m glad that Tash or Cody – I don’t know which one it was despite the lower thirds and I can’t tell them apart yet – felt good about doing something on her own. They seem to not do anything without the other, which is cute and it’s nice to have someone there supporting you and going through it with you, but they need to learn to lead independent lives and I hope – and believe – that this competition will do that for them.

Back tracking a little to earlier in the episode, Paige’s whole “I want to use the privilege I was born with as a white [American] woman to change the world” speech, while admirable, felt fairly disingenuous. To me it came off like she was trying to score points with the Black girls. I would even go so far as to say it was a little white saviour complex-ish. As some of the others said later, she was being too extra. She was “passionate” in a way that was almost forceful and aggressive. Like she was trying to prove herself or win likes or something.

And Binta was having none of it.

Although I don’t agree with how confrontational she was in this episode, there I can side with her. As well as calling Paige unprofessional for how she conducted herself backstage at the runway challenge. She should not have been messing around with the clothes on the rack at all. And Paige’s rebuttal of “This is who I am” was the poorest excuse she could ever have come up with; who she is is unprofessional? She didn’t even realise she was being inappropriate.

I know the show is edited and she probably didn’t say it as much as the show has made it look, but I am starting to get tried of hearing Coryanne talking about her supermodel mother and now she is bringing in her supermodel friends. Being in the vicinity of supermodels does not make her one and she proved that this week with her performance. I wanted her to go home and Justine to stay. Not because I dislike her or anything, but because I just liked Justine more.

The judging felt really short and rushed this week. Is that just me?

Random thoughts:

  1. House of Mugler? What happened to House of Ninja?
  2. Law has no humility. I love it.

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

I didn’t buy that this reporter, Pat Knoller from the Chicago Tribune, really cared that much about Prairie and letting her tell her story so that she could heal. She can do that without having someone write a book about her. And all of her talk about how successful her last book was and how much money it made the family didn’t make her look any better either. She very not so deftly dodged Prairie’s question about if the money healed her previous subject.

And her apology to Prairie about talking about her food choices in light of what Prairie experienced did not feel genuine. I found it ironic that she said “storytelling is cleansing” to Prairie when Prairie is already doing the thing she is trying so hard to convince her will help her overcome what she went through.

When Hap sent Prairie to get his back up EpiPen and she paused, I thought it was because she remembered Homer’s ring, not because she was contemplating letting Hap die. Homer’s ring was the first thing that I thought about when Hap sent her to the bathroom so I assumed it would be her first thought as well. When she dropped the ring into the bath tub I thought she’d lost it for good. And then of course she did when they tried to send the letter.

That plan was too good to be true. I should have expected it not to work just because we know already that Prairie’s parents had no contact with her while she was gone. But I still held out hope.

I’m curious as to how August died. I’m sure it has something to do with the experiment and it wasn’t until now that I realised that we don’t know what it is or what it entails. Prairie, Homer, Scott and Rachel haven’t been subjected to anything yet. Not that we’ve seen on screen at least. And if August died before Prairie got there, why did he have her in a tub (of purple liquid) for that long? Why didn’t he dispose of her body sooner?

I knew that when Prairie broke the window and ran into the woods that that was not the moment of her escape simply because she was blind, but again, I hoped. I thought she would run off of the cliff and die and come back and that would be how she regained her sight.

Random thoughts:

  1. Hap you son of a bitch.
  2. Pellets? Really?
  3. What do they do about periods?
  4. I want to eat the sandwich she made.
  5. For a minute I thought Alfonso really would kill Steve.
  6. But she didn’t even wash that parsley first…
  7. The light at the end of the show keeps changing shape. What’s the significance of that?

Nova launcher is now on Sale for $1

0

Tis the season of giving and the people behind the Nova Launcher product are clearly feeling the spirit. The third-party android launcher has once again slashed the $4 price tag of its premium app down to $1. This offer is available until January 1st 2017, but more importantly, the discount is available for users outside of the US. On a post to their Google+ (That is still used?) page, developer Cliff Wade said this:

“Starting immediately Nova Launcher Prime is now on sale for the cheapest price in your country/region that the Google Play Store will allow,”

Early this year, I had this to say about the product in a review:

“Nova launcher is often lauded in android circles, as one, if not the best 3rd party android launcher available on the market. It is not hard to understand why either, since right from the get go, Nova launcher gives you the tools needed to change every inch of your interface, in a simple to understand manner. Though it is true Nova launcher can be loaded on and used in a similar fashion to the above mentioned Google Now launcher, its real power lies in customization.”

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

I knew Hap was going to kidnap Prairie! I got so many creepster vibes from him. He was far too eager when he first encountered her; overly nice and charming. And he seemed oddly adept at interacting with a blind person. Perhaps he had before, but so far in the story we don’t know if he had. He never once made a mistake or forgot she was blind. He was too perfect. And all of that stuff about she should never have been medicated and he thinks she’s so special, making her feel accepted. He was just buttering her up.

He just all around sounded and acted like a cult leader.
And what a perfect target she was. Her blindness, unfortunately, made her easy to manipulate. When he was taking her down to the basement, just the look of its door was way off for what it was (who has a steel door to their basement?) and the fact that he led her to an underground cavern and that the handrail changed. All of these little things that we, the audience, could see and that Prairie couldn’t that were red flags.

I don’t think he’s necessarily evil, just that he believes the ends justify the means. This research is so important to him that he will do anything – no matter how heinous – in order to achieve his goals. I think he is genuinely taken with Prairie because he can use her.

I’m curious as to why we weren’t shown Homer’s face when we’ve seen it already. Was he purposely being hidden from us or were they just focusing on Prairie and her reaction to being captured?

I kind of believe that Prairie’s father is alive. Either he is or she really is crazy. I’m hoping that all of the things she has experienced with the dreams/premonitions etc is real and she’s not mad. The story would be so much more interesting that way and it would just take the wind out of my sails if it wasn’t. It would probably still be just as impactful, however.

I thought that “Buck” was a nickname since they were called “Michelle” by their parents earlier, or at least that I misheard, but no; they’re trans. I do like Buck though – I think they’re just adorable – so I can’t wait to learn more about them.

I do not want this thing with Prairie to mess up Alfonso’s scholarship. TV writing being TV writing, it likely will. I want him to keep that scholarship because I want him to get away from his mother. Although, I don’t want his little brothers to stay with her either and if he goes there is no one there to take care of them. There is nothing wrong her. She’s just lazy and couldn’t give a damn about her children.

If it does mess him up though, I suspect that by that point in the story – because of his experience with and what he learns from Prairie – he won’t be bothered.

Random thoughts:

  1. She sold her own niece!
  2. No! Don’t go home yet. Get back in the house. Continue the story Prairie!
  3. I get that Prairie’s parents are just trying to help, but they really don’t get it.

Ice Skating in Barbados

0

Migrating all the way from Italy, Paolo Carraro, owner of Barbados’ first ice skating rink ‘Icetopia’, made Barbados his home almost two years ago. As many migrants to the island may know, there is a lot to learn culturally. But in addition to this, Carraro also had the task of learning another language.
Grasping the English language was only one part of his migration journey; living in a Caribbean island there is the added learning objective of deciphering our Barbadian dialect and accent.

Even though he has found himself in a new country, Carraro still holds onto his Italian roots with a love of pasta and a preference for red wine. When it comes to football, Carraro roots for the Intermilan Football Club.

While living in Barbados, one thing he noticed was the lack of recreational spaces on the island. The avenues for entertainment were a bit limited in his opinion; options ranged from going to the beach and going to restaurants. This sparked the idea to open the ice skating rink, now located in Wildey Industrial Park, St. Michael. He wanted to create a space not only for tourists, but one locals could go and experience something new and fun.

It was there that we met in September, before the rink had officially opened, to learn about his plans. The large open space was not what many were envisioning and speculating about on social media; no large AC units burning through electricity to create a wintery wonderland that would cause patrons to run out and buy large coats before they ventured in.

When the Icetopia page was launched on Facebook, Carraro said there was an influx of responses and interest shown that he had not expected. While the majority were showing their excitement for the new recreational space, he did notice several people commenting on the logistics of having an ice skating rink in Barbados and showing concern for the energy consumption it would entail.

However, Carraro said he was well aware of Barbados’ climate. He’s been living here for about two years after all. This factor alone was the reason he chose to use a material known as synthetic ice.

The synthetic panels that create the floor of the rink doesn’t require any refrigeration equipment while still giving the feel and experience of skating on real ice. This made the idea of an ice rink in Barbados’ climate possible – and environmentally and economically friendly.

And speaking of economically friendly, another concern he had while living in the island was how expensive it would be for an entire family to go out and enjoy an evening together. He envisioned his space as one with ‘family friendly’ pricing; at present the prices are $7 BDS for adults and $5 BDS for children under 12 for 30 minutes in the rink, skates included.

His plans and dreams for Icetopia span beyond opening the rink as a recreational space. Carraro’s business goals also include opening a bar on the site which would expose the Barbadian palate to other cuisines like sushi.

At the time of the interview, Carraro stated that another goal of his was to allow schools 2 hours on the ice for free on mornings throughout the week once the all clear was given. The space has been used for parties and small ice hockey teams so far. Opening a larger rink in the future is another thing on his agenda in the years to come.

His biggest dream for the rink is that one day, maybe 20 years from now, Icetopia will be the gateway for a Barbadian Winter Olympics team. Carraro spoke passionately as he recalled previously seeing a Jamaican team and deciding that that was something he would love to help Barbados achieve.

Carraro encourages all Barbadians to come and experience ice skating at Icetopia. I asked if he had any tips for potential skaters. The response? Make sure the skates aren’t too tight but tie your
laces firmly and practice. He said learning to ice skate is like learning to walk or ride a bicycle; you’re going to fall at first but eventually it’ll come naturally.

DJ Puffy Wins Red Bull Thre3style World DJ Championship

0

After his historic advancement to the World Finals of the Red Bull Thre3style World DJ Championship on Tuesday, Barbadian competitor DJ Puffy made history again tonight by outdoing his earlier achievement and winning the competition. The finals took place in Santiago, Chile. Puffy was presented his award by last year’s winner DJ Byte.

Despite the overwhelming support Puffy received from his fellow Barbadians, some viewers on the live stream expressed displeasure with his win and questioned his skills and competence as a DJ.

After his win, Puffy encouraged the crowd to applaud his competitors and said of the competition:

“It’s truly a blessing to share stages with the top twenty-three DJs in the world…And as I said at the end of my set; I didn’t make history today, you did…After Tuesday night you all embraced me and showed me that love and all I could do was give it right back…Thank you so much. I appreciate it.”

The OA S01E01 Recap

0

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

The first thing I noticed about this show – because it’s the most obvious – is how it is shot and coloured. I love it. The style is a familiar one; it’s the kind you see in smaller budget, sometimes indie, films that tend to be deep, philosophical and serious. Maybe even a little pretentious. So that gives me certain expectations about this show.

I was wondering why there were no opening titles and assumed that it may be like some anime that don’t use their opening until the end of the first episode and/or at the beginning of the second. When the opening happened near the end of this episode I fully understood immediately why it was done that way; that was the real start of the story. It was a very interesting, stylish and creative way to incorporate the opening titles and I very much like how they did it.

Despite Prairie being the main character, she wasn’t the one that stood out to me. It was Steve.

He was a real asshole and unlikable when he was introduced. While he still is an asshole by the end of the episode, he’s a lovable one. I quickly grew to like him as it progressed. Patrick Gibson, the actor that portrays him, doesn’t at all look like he is high school age (his age isn’t on IMDB or Wikipedia). I thought Steve was an adult when he first appeared on screen and I continued to up until the moment we saw him in his high school.

Another instance in which I was confused about a character’s age was when Prairie went to the school posing as his step-mother. Before that little tid-bit was revealed – that she was pretending to be his stepmother – I thought she was there as his mother which, by the looks of her, she didn’t look old enough to be. In fact, I thought she was in her early twenties.

Prairie’s meeting with Betty took a really strange turn. I’m glad it didn’t take the usual route of Prairie’s strange rambling – especially about Betty forgetting her first reason and having lost someone – didn’t just somehow unlock this thing within her that made her soften and break down and promptly change her ways. It did by the end, but when Prairie said something that would be sensible to someone not on her wave length; that Betty should focus on the student who isn’t succeeding instead of the one that is.

It went fairly realistically, I think, and still came around to something meaningful that was a real revelation and change.

I don’t buy that the press showed up at her house one day and one day only. Interest in her story would not have died that quickly. Unless a significant amount of time passed and that wasn’t made exactly clear.

It seems like dying – or at least having a near death experience – is important to whatever it is that Prairie is a part of. It looks like it involves obtaining a deeper understanding of the world or the universe (dimensions?). It makes sense that dying would somehow be linked to that considering the myths etc surrounding death and what happens when you die.

This was an amazing first episode. I’m hooked and I’m intrigued and I need to see more.

Random thoughts:

  1. What’s with her feet?
  2. You can’t send your dog to attack her and then tell her not to bite it.

Gaming News: 16 December, 2016 Edition

0

This week in gaming news: The former Kickstarter sensation Shenmue 3 had some new info released this week by its series creator, Yu Suzuki. The latest issue of Weekly Famitsu carried the interview and the kind folks over at Gematsu did the translation. It goes as follows:

“Development is entering the final stage headed towards full-scale production. Early in the new year, I think we’ll be able to show you things such as new videos.

“We will continue progressing with development so that our backers and those who experience the world of Shenmue for the first time can do so with pleasure.

“Also, at noon on December 15, we will start pre-order sales for the PC version of Shenmue III, which received a lot of requests.

Those interested in Shenmue III, please check the official website.”

Great news for all of the fans of this franchise, as the game is expected to still be on track for its slated December release in 2017. As an avid gamer I often support not pre-ordering anything, but in this case I cannot blame avid fans for holding onto hope.

Onto The Division: This week it released its latest update which brought along with it DirectX 12 support as well as a several adjustments to audio placement, controller support and high CPU usage. To add to this, a free weekend is now running for the game, via Steam and uPlay, with a 50% discount running until Monday.

As is usual with Ubisoft, the good must always come with the downright insane. The upcoming Viking/Samurai/Knight brawler (ran out of names huh?) For Honor is said to feature a heavy reliance on multiplayer modes, which even a fully playing single player campaign. So what seems to be the issue? Well this Ubisoft representative had this to say on a Neogaf forum post:

“We can confirm that For Honor is an always online experience. Some elements of progression, which is hosted online, are shared across story and multiplayer mode. Players will need to be connected to the internet at all times to play For Honor,”

Has Ubisoft learned nothing from past failures when it came to always online requirements for titles that have single player campaigns? Ridiculous.

And finally we turn Overwatch: Blizzard has released the chains on the Winter Wonderland holiday event for Overwatch this week, so yes gamers, the event has gone live!!! Players can expect loot boxes packed with new cosmetic items like profile icons, sprays, victory poses, and of course, holiday-themed skins, as well as a new winter event: Mei’s Snowball Offensive, a 6-on-6 single-elimination snowball fight. Enough for me talking however, view the trailer down below !!!

Amazon Prime Air service passes first test

0

Amazon, in a bid to keep ahead of the competition, has begun its commercial trial run of its Prime Air autonomous drone delivery service. Its first test was in Cambridge, England and the first delivery took just 13 minutes from the moment the customer placed the order until arrival of the package.

Amazon has said it will expand the trial to a few more customers and then jump to a few hundred, baring no complications arising. It is worth noting that any customers chosen must be in range of the Cambridge warehouse.

The Prime Air service was announced back in 2013 as a tease to gauge crowd interest and after seeing favourable responses, Amazon decided to invest heavily in the initiative.

A video of the first test can be found below.
