Cyanogen Is No More?

0

Attention please, let us have a moment of silence for our fallen comrade…Yes it is true, Cyanogen Inc. has officially shut down its open source development project and all other related services to its main product.

On December 23rd, a spokesperson from Cyanogen Inc. had this to say on the company’s blog:

As part of the ongoing consolidation of Cyanogen, all services and Cyanogen-supported nightly builds will be discontinued no later than 12/31/16. The open source project and source code will remain available for anyone who wants to build CyanogenMod personally.

This is a clear fall from grace for the popular OS modding company- it was only two years ago it declined an acquisition offer by Google, saying it was “still growing as a company.” Clearly that growth never came to pass, as rumors have been spreading for some months now about a possible shutting down of the open sourced project.

All is not lost however- on December the 24th, a small group of CyanogenMod contributors announced on the CyanogenMod blog that they would be “forking” the OS and move to continue its development. To add more drama to the flame, shortly after the post went up, Cyanogen Inc. had the DNS for cyanogenmod.org shut down. Before that happened however, the post was saved in Google’s cache:

CM has always been more than the name and more than the infrastructure. CM has been a success based on the spirit, ingenuity and effort of its individual contributors…Embracing that spirit, we the community of developers, designers, device maintainers and translators have taken the steps necessary to produce a fork of the CM source code and pending patches. This is more than just a ‘rebrand’. This fork will return to the grassroots community effort that used to define CM while maintaining the professional quality and reliability you have come to expect more recently. We will take pride in our Lineage as we move forward and continue to build on its legacy.

We will keep abreast of the situation as it unfolds.

America’s Next Top Model C23E03 Recap

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

It’s makeover week! The most anticipated episode of every cycle of America’s Next Top Model. Especially for the breakdowns. Aside from the transformations themselves, it’s always awesome to see who loses their confidence and who gains more. And this season’s make over episode did not disappoint. I do miss the days of the contestants not knowing what they would get until they were actually sitting in the chair, though.

We got two makeover breakdowns this cycle, compliments Cherish and Tash. Cherish’s reason for being resistant to the makeover I could somewhat understand, but she could always strip the colour out of her hair later. She looked a lot better after the makeover; before her hair colour looked rather dull. Tash’s breakdown I didn’t get at all. It came down to the fact that she didn’t want to look masculine…but she already did. With her already short hair – which they weren’t making any shorter, they were only shaving down the sides – coupled with her body type, she already looked very masculine before the makeover. So it wasn’t like they were making her look like she hadn’t before.

Tash got one of my favourite makeovers this cycle, along with Kyle and Paige. I don’t like Courtney’s makeover at all; it ages her considerably. Krislian, Marissa and Giah don’t look like models, they look very basic; Krislian and Marissa look like video girls and Giah looks like, as the judges said, an R&B singer. India’s makeover confuses me; the hair colour doesn’t really add anything to her look, but I love the way that it’s styled. The other girls’ makeovers are kind of meh.

And to show off these brand new looks, the girls had a nude photo shoot. Nude – and semi-nude – photo shoots always present a problem. There is always one girl who is not comfortable posing naked. And this cycle it was India. Ultimately she did do the shoot, but I’m not quite clear why she was hesitant to do it in the first place. Insecurity with her body? Moral or ethical disagreement? Shyness and discomfort with disrobing in front of others (that can’t be it, being backstage at a fashion show means flashing everyone and she did a fashion show already)?

The person my eye immediately went to in the first group shot was Kyle. She was fierce, strong and commanding. Definitely the best in her group. Tatiana was the weakest. Coryanne really stepped it up this week – being in the bottom two seems to have worked out well for her – but time will tell if she’s truly this capable or if the photo this week was a fluke.

In the second group shot I saw Marissa first, but immediately after the photo appeared on screen my eyes went to Paige. She outshine Marissa and India by leaps and bounds. She looked amazing. I wish Marissa’s arms wasn’t so stiff and that she titled her head up a little. India was kind of just standing there, her pose wasn’t the best. But she gave good face (and kind of looked a little like Gigi Hadid?).

Group three was far and away the weakest. None of the girls in that group really brought it and it’s difficult to say who was the best because they were almost all equal measures of mediocre. I would say Binta was the worst just because she had been doing so well and her performance this week was just a disappointment. Krislian looked like a deer in headlights and Cherish was trying too hard.

The fourth group was the best, brought down only by Giah who significantly under performed compared to Courtney and Tash. Tash won this photo and the shoot on the whole to me; best in her group and best of the week. I do not agree with the judges that Courtney was the best – I’d give her third place after Kyle – and Tash should have been called first at panel. Tash hated her makeover but she did not let that hinder her performance this week at all. She was very Grace Jones.

The girls who were in the bottom three deserved to be there, but I would have put Giah in the bottom two and not Cherish. If I were Cherish I’d be pissed I changed my hair only to get eliminated too.

Random thoughts:

  1. Coryanne is still on this “My mom was a supermodel” thing.
  2. Krislian: “…I have a big butt…” No. No you don’t.
  3. Marissa really should have auditioned for Bad Girls Club. Her personality fits that show a lot better.
  4. Again, Kyle is lower than she should be.

America’s Next Top Model airs Mondays at 10 pm on VH1.

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

I don’t know how I feel about this episode. But before we get to the ending and that apparent twist, let’s talk about the end of Prairie’s story.

I was very disappointed in the Sheriff for listening to Hap and not immediately arresting him and taking him down to the police station. I get it, his wife is gravely ill and dying and Hap offered him a cure. It’s totally understandable why he decided to make the deal with Hap. I was hoping he would get his wife healed and then turn Hap in anyway and not be so selfish and cold as to leave Prairie and the others trapped. But of course that never happened because as soon as Prairie and Homer healed his wife, Hap shot them both.

I wanted Prairie to go with Homer’s plan of feigning doing the second movement and not actually healing the Sheriff’s wife. The Sheriff would have arrested Hap and saved them if they made him look like a fraud, I think. But that would only make them as selfish and cold as the Sheriff if he had, indeed, left them there. Prairie, being the kind person she is, refused Homer’s offer and healed her.

A good thing she did too because, surprise, the Sheriff’s wife had the fifth movement and gave it to them. It makes me wonder what the point of Rachel was if she was never going to be the recipient of the fifth movement. Arguably, Khatun gave it to someone else to give them so that Hap wouldn’t get it. But that was decades ago. Unless Khatun, knowing the future, gave it to her then to prevent Hap from getting it. But if she knew the future, she would see that Hap got it anyway? I don’t know.

Being one of the “angels” is not necessary to perform the movement so the extent of Rachel’s usefulness, it seems, was to be a fifth person to perform the movements.

I never thought that Prairie’s escape would simply be Hap letting her go. He had no reason to really and if his statement of “You’ll be all alone. With nothing. With no one.” is any indication, he was just being spiteful.

And now…the twist.

I was so happy that Steven and Alfonso were being proactive about finding proof that Prairie’s story was real. That they were really trying to help her out. And I was so hopeful that they would find proof and finally Nancy and Abel would understand everything that’s been happening to her since she was a child and believe her. That their parents and everyone else who crashed their session would see the truth. Then they run off and save Homer and the others and everyone lives happily ever after.

None of that happened.

Because Alfonso found books that point directly to Prairire having made up the entire thing, under her bed. I was wrong in my recap of episode two; all of it being a lie and Prairie just being crazy was not as impactful – or satisfying – as if it were all real. Not because I didn’t get the ending I had wanted, just because it felt like a slap in the face.

After reading other articles online I can say that there were definitely somethings that hinted at her not being entirely truthful; it didn’t just come out of nowhere. But I never once doubted Prairie’s reliability as a narrator or the veracity of her story. That was the point of course. Prairie and the show itself were so good at presenting the story that some of us – like me – never questioned it.

I haven’t made up my mind about if I believe she was lying or if I believe she was telling the truth, but after all is said and done I don’t think it really matters. Prairie helped Steve, Alfonso, Buck, Jesse and Betty as much as they did her. True or not, telling them that story began the healing process for her and the others listening started it for them as well. So in that way it was still impactful and satisfying, just not as much.

The school shooting felt very, very random and out place in this narrative. Again, this was something that upon doing some reading I found that there were, in fact, hints to it scattered throughout the show but those maybe have been a tad too subtle. Although, I did know there was going to be a school shooting the second Prairie told Abel she knew what her premonition meant. Not sure why. Perhaps those hints subliminally planted the idea in my mind so that I would make the connection later. Because those hints were not obvious to me at all.

I enjoyed the ride The OA took me on right up until the end. Not that I hate the ending, I just really don’t know how I feel about it.

Random thoughts:

  1. Don’t listen to Hap Sheriff!
  2. Hap: “…there is only grey. There is only what a man can stand.” If that helps you sleep at night.
  3. How did all of these people know to crash their session?
  4. How did the media find out about this already?
  5. I knew Nancy had the note!

The OA SO1E07 Recap

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

This was a fairly eventful episode.

First, we had Steve getting kidnapped by a couple of goons; his father finally made good on his promise to send him to reform school. Am I the only one that thought those men didn’t look like they came from a school? They even accepted a bribe. How reputable could this institution be?

I felt sorry for Steve when he came home, found his dad upset with him and took a shower practising his apology. We’d never really seen him that scared before on the show and perhaps even a little regretful for punching the choir singer in the throat. I’m not quite sure Steve evolved enough to feel regret, though. It was no surprise when he went downstairs and found the two men from the reform school ready to take him away.

I am so glad that Betty was driving by at that exact moment. I didn’t think Steve would end up going to the reform school, but I was curious to see how he would get out of it. This show does not like having its characters’ plans work on the first try or at all. I wouldn’t call the “cry molestation” plan ingenious by any means, but that being said, it didn’t slow them down as much as I thought it would have. Maybe there weren’t enough people around to cause a scene.

Having Betty save him was such a triumphant moment. Not just because of Steven being saved which meant Prairie still had her five, but because of where Betty and Steve started out in the season. Their student/teacher relationship has improved tremendously. If this had been the beginning of the season, she would have driven by with a look of glee on her face.

Then of course there was Prairie’s dinner with her parents at Olive Garden.

Before we get to that though, Nancy was being overbearingly overprotective of Prairie from the beginning of the episode. I understand that I think that because, as a viewer, I’m seeing things from Prairie’s perspective and I don’t want anything to impede her from achieving her goals. Nancy’s insistence that Abel should have been walking Prairie right to the door when he took her to see her therapist was perfectly reasonable. As far as Nancy can see, her daughter is – and always has been – mentally unstable. Hence why she’s so quick to medicate her.

Also I am 100% certain she’s hiding Prairie’s letter from Abel.

I wholeheartedly agreed with her about making the random girl delete the selfie she took with Prairie. She was totally out of line. Not only did she force her way into their dinner by refusing to leave or accept no for answer when they politely refused her, she did not even wait for an answer from Prairie before taking the photo. She just slid right into the seat next to Prairie in the booth and took it without Prairie’s consent. That was infuriating and I was right there with Nancy in her anger.

She ruined their dinner and Nancy quickly became hysterical. The random girl may have triggered her little freak out, but it barely had anything to do with that. That was a release of everything she was holding back since Prairie came home. She just doesn’t know what to do with Prairie, how to help her or relate to her. The slap was taking things way too far, though. Nancy may need therapy just as much as Prairie does.

Points to Alfonso for abandoning work to help his friend. It likely wasn’t the best thing to do, but it was sweet of him. He was right about them being her parents. They’re the only ones she’s known for the majority of her life. They were by no means perfect and its easy to see why she resents them, but they are, and always have been, trying to do what they thing is best for Prairie.

Random thoughts:

  1. Nancy seems a little disappointed that she was told not to medicate Prairie.
  2. Why doesn’t Steve have curtains?
  3. Dammit Betty just tell the principal you’ve been counselling Steve or something. Don’t let slip about the meetings.
  4. Why is violence Steve’s reaction to everything?

Beam from Microsoft gets Updated

0

After Microsoft bought the start-up Beam earlier in the year, it quickly announced plans to integrate it into Xbox One and Windows 10. This loudly signaled to Twitch and the more recently launched YouTube Gaming that it intended to shake up the competition. The latest update to this Microsoft service has brought a much needed improvement with its streaming quality: Beam now has support for data rates of up to 10 Mb/s and native resolutions of 2560 x 1440 at a magnificent 60 frames per second. The ability to create events to be done by multiple streamers has also been added, with other features to be revealed in the upcoming days.

Microsoft still has a lot to do in order to close in on its competition however; Amazon’s Twitch is still the juggernaut in the game streaming arena and YouTube is desperately trying to find its footing with YouTube Gaming. YouTube Gaming has one major important strength over Twitch however; it’s method of archiving its videos. The playback on YouTube is much easier than it is on Twitch, since YouTube can rewind live streams of up to 4 hours. Twitch on the other hand is often the go to game streaming service for professionals and amateurs alike.

The upgraded features to Beam Pro users are currently available, with the roll out for everyone else slated to arrive in 2017.

“We’re no longer the scrappy startup we were last year, and with the resources of Microsoft behind us, we’re going back to the basics and evaluating how we can make every aspect of the site more smooth, stable, and epic. Today, I’m extremely excited to announce that Pro users can begin testing an entirely new version of Beam, written from the ground up with scale in mind.”

The OA S01E06 Recap

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

Oh Hap, why did you tell Leon anything?

I was unsure of whether or not Leon knew about the specifics of Hap’s experiment. It wasn’t made clear right away – not for me at least – and I thought Hap may have been speaking in non-specific terms just so he wouldn’t give away that he’d kidnapped people and was holding them captive in his basement. But Leon knew and was even more callous and unscrupulous about Prairie and the other’s than Hap was. Hell, in general; he tried to kill Hap for his information. At least Hap cared enough to be resentful of their closeness.

I’m surprised that Hap’s study is not the only one of its kind. I’m interested as to what exactly Leon’s study entails but it seems to involve working on the dead and not the living? Or all of those dead people are subjects he killed but he has the luxury of storing them in a morgue.

Given that Hap and Leon have known each other for a while – Leon said he trained Hap – then I would’ve thought that Hap would know not to tell him anything about what Prairie and the others seemed to be uncovering. Just the look on his face when he urged Hap to tell him of his competing theory was enough to deduce that he could not be trusted. It was obvious that he was luring Hap into a trap.

Perhaps the fact that they knew each other for so long was why Hap was so easy to fool.

And Hap’s response of “I can’t” when Leon demanded he tell him about where Prairie and the others travel to was a call back to when Prairie said the same thing to him. Now he knows how it feels to be on the other side of being threatened to reveal information.

It occurred to me during this episode that we don’t know why Hap is doing any of this. He’s probably just afraid of death and the unknown and as a scientist, he’s seeking to nullify that fear by finding answers.

And as much as Prairie doesn’t want to admit it, they are working together; although I would not go so far as Hap and call them collaborators (his desperation to connect with her and the others – her more than them – is so twisted). He needs them and they need him. Their goals are different but they all need the same thing to accomplish each.

Hap was caught in such an unassuming, unexpected and irresponsible way. Why was his door even unlocked? I think Hap is going to find a way out of this situation. Maybe even involving killing the Sheriff. Based on what Prairie has said, the others are still in captivity. That means that whatever the Sheriff does next did not stop Hap, nor did it result in them being saved. So this little ray of hope doesn’t mean much.

I imagine the episode was shorter than the previous ones because Buck’s father closed their front door. Given that an open door is a requirement of participating in Prairie’s sessions, I think his closing the door cut it short and by extension the episode itself.

Random thoughts:

  1. So that’s where the scars came from.
  2. What is with this purple liquid?
  3. Hap constantly saying “the work” reminds me of Bill and Virginia from Masters of Sex.
  4. Hap is so desperate and lonely.

The OA S01E05 Recap

0

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

I knew Scott wasn’t dead! He couldn’t have been. They needed five and now that they had five there was no way he was going to be out of the equation. I knew the movements would bring him back. I only wish Rachel had joined in. And now because Renata witnessed his resurrection they don’t need to waste time trying to convince her of anything.

Anyone else think he looked like Jesus?

I was thrown for a loop after Scott died and it cut to the stars expanding then contracting. It looked like he was going to have the NDE but then didn’t because he was unable to reach that plane. They made it look like he was well and truly dead but I refused to believe it. It looked like that was what it was meant to be symbolise; him dying.

I am elated ! Scott isn’t dead! He was down for a really long time though. Have any of the others been dead for that long? It seemed like before it was only for a few minutes.

Now that the most exciting part of the episode is out of the way, let’s get to the rest of it.

I’m a little more sympathetic to Alfonso’s mother now. She surprised me by actually acting like a mother who loves and cares about her child, really believes in him and is proud of him. I still don’t think there’s really anything wrong with her, at least physically. It looks like she went through some things and just gave up on life.  I thought that scene would turn out differently and she would cause a scene and do something to embarrass Alfonso and ruin the relationship he established with his benefactors. Although I do wish he didn’t have to suck up to these people.

I really thought that Homer was going to get away from Hap when they went to Cuba. But his having successfully escaped didn’t align with what we knew going into this episode. But a girl can hope. Hap isn’t completely heartless after all, it seems, because he did feel something when he was sitting down to dinner with Homer and saw how shaken and barely functional he was.

But that one glimmer of humanity in him doesn’t make me hate him any less. It was so evil of him to use Homer to trap someone else for his experiment. To force him to put someone else through an experience that has been nothing but pain and trauma for him. The second he said he wanted Homer’s help with something I knew that was what he planned to do given that Renata had rejected him.

I do think he also planned to use Homer’s being complicit in the entrapment of someone else to quash their rebellion. But then when Homer had sex with Renata, he saw an even greater, more effective way to do that; just to make it hurt the others even more. Prairie especially. I get the feeling he has a thing for her and singles out and is jealous of Homer because of their closeness. But he can’t expect the girl to fall for him when he’s torturing her.

Random thoughts:

  1. Are they not so far underground that their shouts could be heard above ground?
  2. Great. Now he’s watching them more closely.
  3. Why is this teacher so concerned with who Alfonso is eating lunch with, considering there is already a teacher there “monitoring” them?
  4. Don’t lost it Homer.
  5. No Renata! Run!
  6. Don’t tell him anything Scott!

Facebook to Launch Audio Broadcasting Service

0

It has been hard to miss the amount of live video broadcasting Facebook has been pushing in the last few months with the successful launch of their service, Facebook Live. Now the company sees it fit to turn its attention to more audio-centric programs. The new feature was announced yesterday, and is set to go into the testing phases over the next couple of weeks. BBC World Service, LBC and even authors such as Adam Grant are working with Facebook to help launch this live audio broadcasting service which is set for early in 2017.

Facebook claims they are doing this service because they know sometimes content creators will want to tell a story “with words and not video,” which Facebook is willing to cater for. Also this service will be a great option for those who are on a network with poor connectivity, since audio takes up less bandwidth.

“From interviews to book readings, we’re excited about the layer of interactivity that Live Audio brings to both the broadcaster and listener. Just as with a live video on Facebook, listeners can discover live audio content in News Feed, ask questions and leave reactions in real time during the broadcast, and easily share with their friends.

We know that people often like to listen to audio while doing other things; people using Android devices will be able to continue listening to a Live Audio broadcast even if they leave the Facebook app or lock their phones, while iOS listeners will be able to continue listening as they browse other parts of Facebook.”

As said before, the service is expected to launch early 2017.
