Sherlock S04E01 Recap

0

Did I just watch the first episode in the new season for BBC’s Sherlock? Or did I just watch a television adaptation of the James Bond film Skyfall? I will unfortunately have to go with the latter because this recent entry in the Sherlock chronicles went full on Bond Mode, to varying degrees of success and failure.

The Good:

  • Benedict Cumberbatch is once again back in the role that made him a household name and he is electric. His Sherlock has always been my favourite on the small screen (and the big). His Sherlock is a damaged person, one who revels in fully knowing that fact. In this episode he once again brought his ‘A’ game, with his deep rolling voice and sarcastic attitude towards any and every one who cannot roll with his thought patterns.
  • Martin Freeman once again reprises his role as the faithful sidekick and friend Dr. John Watson. He still brings the heart and occasional humour.

The Bad:

  • Too much Bond, not enough Sherlock.

Sherlock, the clear murderer from the end of last season is back, but his past has been taken care of on the official records. Thanks to Mycroft (of course). Moriarty even though dead (yeah right) is still playing a huge role in Sherlock’s life, though mostly from his own doing.  Sherlock is still talking fast, texting, insulting people, solving crimes and anything else he can do to past the time until his arch nemesis returns. Watson and Mary now have a kid to deal with – though for the entirety of the episode the baby was more a boring plot point rather than adding flavour to these two characters.

We knew from the moment Mary was outed as being a former assassin for hire that she would eventually get killed on the show because of this past. So said, so done. I think what bothered me the most is how  predictable this episode was. Apart from the typical weekly mystery the team normally solves at the beginning of each episode, everything else that happened was of no surprise to me; Mary’s former teammate coming to kill her because of a misunderstand, Mary trying to live a normal life but dives back into her past to protect those she cares about, Sherlock’s obsession with Moriarty blinding him from facts he would normally see from a mile away…These all were of no surprise. This episode did remind me a lot of Skyfall from the James Bond franchise, and if you read the points I have listed above you can see why.

All in all it was an okay episode, still very much worth a watch. I would, however, pay very close attention to the next episode to get a sense of if they will return to what we truly love about Sherlock in the first place; the brain over brawn stories, or whether we will continue with pseudo-007.

See the trailer for the next episode down below.

Qualcomm and ODG team up to make Smartglasses

0

Yes it’s that time again for CES (Consumer Electronics Show) news to be flying out of Las Vegas. Every Year the annual trade show is organized by the Consumer Technology Association to display (show off) up and coming new tech and software to gauge market interest. During the week we will cover some of the more interesting stories – we start first with Qualcomm and ODG.

Famous for its manufacturing or semi-conductors for mobile devices, Qualcomm has made it no secret it intends to dip its very rich toes into other upcoming tech markets. This time around it is looking to develop smartglasses; yes the market we thought had died with the Google Glass initiative is seemingly going to make a comeback with Qualcomm and ODG help. The R-8 and R-9 (Star Wars reference?) are smartglasses which are said to offer VR experiences similar to those found in the HTC Vive and PS VR. The difference comes with the untethered nature of the product, since it will powered alone by the Snapdragon chip and not a bulky PC.

Ralph Osterhout, Founder and CEO of ODG (Osterhout Design Group) had this to say about the future of the technology:

ODG is pioneering glasses for the masses that play movies with cinematic clarity, drop you inside immersive 3D interactive experiences, and reveal new worlds of invention and productivity. This is so much bigger than just a device, it’s about a whole new computing medium that will transform how we interact with and discover information and engage with people and objects in the world around us.

The R-8 Specs-

  • It has a 40-degree field of view
  • HD resolution and is generally intended as an end-user product.
  • Geared more toward early adopters

The R-8 specs

  • 50-degree field of view
  • 1080p resolution
  • Advanced visual inertial odometry motion tracking and Project Horizon compatibility

So…what are the price tags for these two products???

The R-9 is set to have a possible price tag of $1,799 while the R-8 will hit shelves during the second half of the year at a retail price of $1,000.

America’s Next Top Model C23E04 Recap

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

This episode more or less revolved around Courtney. Depending on how you felt about her before and how you feel about her now, that was either a good thing or a bad thing.

For me personally, the way she was presented in this episode really made her look like the snake, professional victim and attention whore that Tash has been saying she is. Courtney has pretty much been positioned as the villain in this cycle…I would have expected that to be someone like Marissa or maybe even Binta; because of how bitchy the former has been and the aggressive, confrontational nature of the latter.

In this week’s challenge, the girls  were paired off and given thirty minutes in which they had to create Snap Chat stories with a message, while modelling lingerie in the streets of New York City. This was the beginning of Courtney’s villain arc. She was paired with Binta and her behaviour was less than admirable. Binta being Binta (read previous paragraph), she didn’t help the situation and neither of them were being particularly cooperative, but it was the fact that Courtney did not participate in Binta’s video but insisted that Binta take part in hers that did not do her any favours.

And then of course, Courtney won the challenge. Which to anyone with eyes – and certainly it was to Courtney herself – should have been a shock. Courtney’s video was one of the worst of the bunch. Marissa, Kyle, Paige, Tash, Cody and Binta herself all had videos that were better than Courtney’s by far. Courtney lacked energy and personality; she was flat, boring and lifeless and the frustration she felt during the challenge was more than evident. Her performance was terrible. She won purely because of her message and I agree with Binta to some extent; because she had a black person as her “prop.” Binta did nothing but stand there and look pretty. I understand that it was Courtney’s video and she was to be the focus, but she could have involved Binta more.

I don’t appreciate how Binta came at Courtney on the way back to the house (at some point her role as the angry black woman in this house is going to get old), although I do think that it’s time someone got on Courtney for her behaviour.

It’s interesting how after the not-so-warm reception Courtney received from some of the girls the night before, she found herself falling on the stairs and hurting her head, back and arm the next day. It’s even more interesting that none of the girls in the house saw it and what’s the most interesting thing about this little event is that we, the viewers, didn’t see it either…

The photo shoot this week was centred on social media as well, the platform this time was Instagram. The girls went to a Paper Magazine party and served as each other’s photographers; they were tasked with taking photos throughout the night and choosing three photos that told a story.

By the time judging was half over and they’d started calling out the girls that were staying, I’d forgotten about Tatiana, Giah, Binta, Marissa, India and Courtney’s photos. Their photos were good but clearly not memorable. I loved Paige’s photos; she was the centre of attention and her poses and face were flawless. I agree with Law about Tash’s photos; I didn’t like anything about them and they were boring. India didn’t look like a model in her photos; she looked like some random girl at the party. Kyle’s were awesome but she was lost; I had to look for her in the last two – my eye didn’t immediately catch her. Coryanne faded into the background in hers; they were bland.

They truly saved the best for last with Krislian. Her photos were amazing! She really brought it this week. Her photos were stunning, the last one especially. I could see that one in a magazine, on a billboard and as part of a campaign. The judges’ reaction was hilarious and I agree with them wholeheartedly. She really stepped up her game and I couldn’t be more proud of her or any other contestant this cycle. I am so glad she was called first.

I find myself consistently disagreeing with the judges about who is sent home. Tash was far more consistent than Coryanne. Yes, her photo last week was great, but Tash has been the stronger competitor and has delivered better photos than her every week. Tash should have stayed.

Random thoughts:

  1. Giah does not look like a model at all, not in photos and not when she’s just hanging around normally. She’s just pretty, there is nothing interesting or edgy about her look.
  2. I like Rita as host, she does a good job. The judges still don’t stand out or have made an impression. At this point I’m glad I see very little of them. They’re not as great as Nigel, the Jays, Janice or Kelly.
  3. DJ Khaled needs to have a major role on this show next cycle. He has so much energy and personality.
  4. How is it that this cycle stresses the importance of social media but they’ve gotten rid of the social media aspect of judging?
  5. First time I agree with the order Kyle was called in.
  6. I would have called Paige second and Binta third.

America’s Next Top Model airs Mondays at 10 PM on VH1.

TV Recap Preview – Scandal

0

Premiere Date: January 19th

Network: ABC

Cast: Kerry Washington, Tony Goldwyn, Scott Foley, Bellamy Young, Darby Stanchfield, Katie Lowes, Guillermo Diaz, Jeff Perry, Joshua Malina, Portia de Rossi, Joe Morton, Cornelius Smith Jr.

Synopsis: Everyone has secrets… and Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) has dedicated her life to protecting and defending the public images of the nation’s elite by keeping those secrets under wraps. Pope’s team are at the top of their game when it comes to getting the job done for their clients, but it becomes apparent that these “gladiators in suits,” who specialize in fixing the lives of other people, have trouble fixing those closest at hand — their own. – ABC.

Why we’re watching: As tired as some of us may be of Olitz and the increasingly melodramatic and contrived nature of the show, it’s hard to let go of it. Despite its flaws, the show never ceases to be captivating and the cast continues to deliver stellar performances. The world needs more of Olivia and Mellie as a power couple (kudos to Shonda Rhimes for writing two female characters who have always been antagonistic toward each other because of a man, being able to settle their differences and work together to make each other’s dreams a reality) and we all need to see how their election turns out.

TV Recap Preview – Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events

0

Premiere Date: January 13th

Network: Netflix

Cast: Neil Patrick Harris, Patrick Warburton, Joan Cusack, Malina Weissman, Louis Hynes, Presley Smith

Synopsis: The extraordinary Baudelaire orphans face trials, tribulations and the evil Count Olaf in their fateful quest to unlock long-held family secrets. – Netflix.

Why we’re watching: After the Jim Carrey starring film adaptation of the book series failed to launch a franchise, those of us who were eagerly anticipating more adventures featuring the Baudelaire children, but didn’t necessarily want to read the books, are more than excited to see a new adaptation is coming our way. It will be fascinating to see someone else’s interpretation of the work and see how the film and the series differ and are the same. Hopefully this time the adaptation will be a success and we will get more seasons of the show.

TV Recap Preview – Taboo

0

Premiere Date: January 7th (UK)/10th (US)

Network: BBC One (UK)/FX (US)

Cast: Tom Hardy, Oona Chaplin, David Hayman, Michael Kelly, Jonathan Pryce

Synopsis: Taboo follows James Keziah Delaney, who returns to London from Africa in 1814 and is encircled by conspiracy, murder and betrayal. – BBC.

Why we’re watching: Tom Hardy, yes Bane himself, is starring in a British miniseries.. Will it be great? Who knows. What we do know, is that it will be a fun ride. Revenge plots can be either hit or miss, but this one looks like it shall hold our undivided attention. With Hardy not having appeared in any films in 2016, here’s hoping he comes back strong and on point and gives his fans the Tom Hardy we all know and love.

TV Recap Preview – Grimm

0

Premiere Date: January 6th

Network:  NBC

Cast: David Giuntoli, Russell Hornsby, Bitsie Tulloch, Silas Weir Mitchell, Sasha Roiz, Reggie Lee, Bree Turner, Claire Coffee

Synopsis: Now that the nefarious forces of Black Claw have been silenced, Nick (David Giuntoli) faces an all too familiar foe in Capt. Sean Renard (Sasha Roiz). Having gained a seat of power as the mayor-elect of Portland, Renard is poised to bring rise to his own brand of law and order. Nick must take a stand to protect his city and those closest to him, especially his child with Adalind (Claire Coffee). It will take the full force of Nick and his allies to find a way to bring peace.  Meanwhile, Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell) and Rosalee (Bree Turner) grapple with bringing a child into a new and tumultuous world, and Eve (Bitsie Tulloch) faces unsettling identity issues as her former self lurks below the surface. – NBC.

Why we’re watching: Grimm is a show that started out kind of bad but then got really good and has continued to improve season after season as it moved away from monster of the week stories to a more over-arching one. The Juliette/Eve thing and Adalind getting pregnant again were a little much, but this series remains fun and entertaining with an intriguing mythology and captivating characters. And with Diana posing a threat, it will be interesting to see what happens in the upcoming season.

BlackBerry Mercury

0

The upcoming BlackBerry Mercury smartphone has leaked once more- this time a screenshot of Android 7.0 on the device has been shown and apparently confirms an alleged display of 1620×1080 pixel resolution (420 ppi density).
Rumors so far suggest a Snapdragon 821 chipset will be used in the device; that plus 4.5 inch screen size with a battery to last “two days” should make it quite the interesting product for 2017.

The Mercury handset will feature a physical QWERTY keyboard (rejoice BlackBerry fans), and is set to be competitively priced for the US markets. It is wise to bare in mind that so far, these are all rumors; nothing has yet to be confirmed by the phone manufacturer.

Here’s a screenshot of Android 7.0 on the BlackBerry “Mercury” BBB100-x. 1620×1080 resolution 420dpi.
