Pure Genius S01E07 Recap

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

They actually did it. And sooner than I thought they would; introduced a patient that the powers that be at Bunker Hill could not save. Maddie being alive by the end of the episode and not dying on screen was a little disappointing, as was the fact that her impending death didn’t have the impact on the cast – James especially – that I wanted an “unsaveable” patient to have; knock James down a few pegs and make him realise that they can’t solve everything and save everyone. I understand though that that was not the purpose of her character in this episode.

Maddie was there to remind James that he needed to live life without fear. I was so glad he finally got the courage to ask Dr. Brockett out but, of course, we all knew it was too late by then. If he ever had a chance with her that is. I don’t think he ever did and not just because of Dr. Verlaine.

Speaking of their blossoming office romance, of course they had sex because she was sad. A girl crying about her mother who died of breast cancer is an amazing aphrodisiac. I didn’t expect them to go that far. I thought the most the were going to do was kiss (and maybe James come in at the wrong moment and see them?). I’m quite surprised they went there.

As for their other patient, Giselle, the civil rights lawyer, she was yet another one of their patients I didn’t really care about. Their introducing her via her telling the doctors about one of her cases felt like forced sympathy. Like the writers were trying to get the audience to quickly latch onto her. As they – the writers – should, but it didn’t feel organic. As per usual, their attempts to make the audience connect with a character failed.

I did like Maddie though. She was cute and likeable. I figured the treatment wouldn’t work the second her father started talking about taking her to the Philip Philips concert. Also, Philip Philips? Is he still relevant? I thought he was planning for her future prematurely. And he was. I smiled, laughed and teared up when Philip Philips walked through the door of Maddie’s room and gave her her own private concert. That was a sweet moment.

My heart, figuratively, stopped when Louis moved the chess piece the wrong way. He is legitimately the only character I care about on this show – besides James and Dr. Wallace to some extent – and he barely appears and is hardly developed.

The second time I smiled during this episode was at the end, when everyone gathered around to watch It’s A Wonderful Life with James. It was obvious that would have happened but it was still heart warming to see.

Random thoughts:

  1. James: “Okay. I get it. It’s a Hail Mary Pass.” Everything you people do is a Hail Mary Pass.
  2. I’m surprised Dr. Brockett didn’t stop singing when she saw James was watching.
  3. Angie didn’t actually annoy me this week.

Ubisoft released the ultimate giveaway for its 30th anniversary celebrations this week, and the outcome was as predictable as cheese going on pizza. Assassin’s Creed 3 is now free on the Ubisoft Club, and as is usual with Creed games, the Ubisoft servers could not handle the influx of players and thus they crashed. The game is only free for one month however, so those interested in the title have a little over four weeks to download it and have some fun. Gamers who own the Black Flag entry of the series might have noticed it disappearing from their accounts if they downloaded AC3. Is that odd? Yes it very much is. Apparently the cause of the issue is not clear at this time, but Ubisoft promises to find a solution to the unique issue.

So different kind of news this week out of Blizzard Entertainment; the company announced plans to move into book publishing with its launch of Blizzard Publishing. This new arm of the company is “dedicated to developing and releasing new Blizzard publications and reissuing out-of-print titles in the company’s Warcraft, StarCraft, and Diablo settings.”

This new label is designed to “help maintain the lore and legacy of the company’s earliest novels and manga.” The first set of material out of the gate shall be as follows:

Blizzard Legends

  • Warcraft: The Last Guardian by Jeff Grubb
  • Warcraft: Lord of the Clans by Christie Golden
  • World of Warcraft: Rise of the Horde by Christie Golden

 Blizzard Manga

  • Warcraft Legends: Volume One, with stories by Richard A. Knaak, Dan Jolley, and Jae-Hwan Kim
  • Warcraft Legends: Volume Two, with stories by Richard A. Knaak, Dan Jolley, and Aaron Sparrow

Blizzard’s SVP of story and franchise development Lydia Bottegoni had this to say:

“Great stories and inspiring artwork have always been at the heart of everything we do…the creation of Blizzard Publishing gives us new opportunities to celebrate the art and stories of our games with Blizzard gamers as well as fantasy and sci-fi fans around the world.”

Most of the books have been sold out so far, except the World of Warcraft Official Cookbook.

And finally Overwatch’s holiday event is set to start on the 13th of this month. There is no word on what events will actually be taking place, but we can expect a ton of new character skins, emotes and other cosmetics to come our way.

Radeon Crimson Drivers Have Been Unleashed

0

AMD has slowly been clawing its way back into the limelight after years of mediocre sales to gamers and general consumers alike. Yesterday, the red team continued this battle by releasing their major driver update for 2016 dubbed ‘Radeon Software Crimson ReLive.’ This new driver features tons of various bug fixes and performance boosts of around 8% for their cards such as the RX 480. More importantly however, they released screen capture software to go up against Nvidia’s ShadowPlay.

Placed into the Radeon Settings interface as a new tab, the “ReLive” screen capture software will allow its users to record their gameplay, desktop footage, and even stream their content directly to sites such as YouTube and Twitch. With Instant Replay selected, the last 20 minutes of gameplay or desktop footage is constantly buffered to disk.

Along with ReLive, Radeon Chill was also introduced for the first time. This software will automatically reduce the frame rate of a game during static scenes which have little to no movement or effects going off on screen. This is to reduce power consumption within games, which in turn reduces heat and noise. AMD has claimed power consumption in the World of Warcraft title has dropped around 31%, from 108W to 75W using their 8GB RX480. Temperature drops were also significant; up to 13 degrees Celsius. It’s worth noting that Radeon Chill is fully configurable, with users having the ability to tweak how much power it’s able to reduce to maximize performance potential at lower power usage. Sadly, Radeon Chill does not work with DirectX 12 as yet. However, look out for that in a future update.

Apple Watch sales are declining, Sort of

0

A show of hands: how many of us actually own a smartwatch?Yes, I figured not much of you do.

The small smartwatch market has been a tricky one for manufacturers for years. The demand for such devices has not been so large as to satisfy investors, or small enough to completely ignore and quit investment into the technology. Apple, though late to the smartwatch game, has a noticeable lion’s share of the wearable market (though that does not say much).

Thanks to a new report from the IDC, we now know that Apple Watch sales have slumped since last year. Only 1.1 million devices have been sold in the third quarter of 2016; that is down by a massive 71% compared to last year. Of course Apple’s CEO Tim Cook had to put a spin on the situation; in an interview with Reuters he mentioned how the number of watches that actually reached customers were high.

“Sales growth is off the charts…in fact, during the first week of holiday shopping, our sell-through of Apple Watch was greater than any week in the product’s history. And as we expected, we’re on track for the best quarter ever for Apple Watch,” Cook said.

Apple themselves are expecting the holiday season to be a big boost for Watch sales, however that is to be expected; many devices are on discount so a jump in sales is not that surprising.

Apple released the 2nd iteration of the watch earlier this year to lukewarm reception. The watch had improvements such as the implementation of its onboard GPS and swim-tracking features. It is, however, worth noting that for many the price was just too damn high for a fitness tracker.

The smartwatch market on a whole needs a massive overhaul, because it is clear that in its present state it’s not doing much to gain consumers interest.

The Flash S03E09 Recap

0

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

Team Flash’s defeat of Savitar was far too simple, quick and easy. Maybe I missed something, but I don’t recall them learning that they needed the put the philosopher’s stone in the box in order to trap Savitar. They learned of the philosopher’s stone itself and that it’s the source of his power, but I don’t remember them learning anything about the box.

That being said, I’m not that bothered by how easy it was but it left me very unsettled for the remainder of the episode because it was so easy. I kept expecting something to go terribly, terribly wrong. Technically it did when Barry was flung into the future accidentally and he saw Savitar kill Iris. What I was expecting, though, was something bad happening in the present. The very hopeful, cheerful and Christmas-y tone at the end didn’t ease that feeling either because we all know that as soon as characters are happy something goes awry. So I was very surprised when it ended and nothing bad happened.

I knew Savitar would be coming back in the next half of the season even before Barry was flung into the future. Simply because they defeated him too easily. Someone as powerful and as “godlike” as Savitar cannot be defeated just by putting him in a box and throwing it into the speed force. Not when there was a barely a struggle leading up to that. I never believed that would be a permanent solution.

As much as Jay wants to comfort Barry by telling him that the future isn’t set in stone, we all know it’s going to happen. That’s a given. Five months is a very short time, however, to escape from a prison that was meant to hold you for eternity. For him to get out that quickly is only a testament to his power.

The greatest evidence that Barry still has not learned from all of his time travelling mistakes, especially Flash Point (and the entire first half of the season was spent really driving home just how much he screwed up), is the fact that his very first thought after witnessing Iris die in the future was to time travel to fix it. How many times must you make the same mistake Barry?

Granted, he would be going to the future instead of going to the past and, arguably, doing things in the future may not affect the timeline in the catastrophic ways that changing the past would, but the fact is that he defaulted to his solution for every problem; time travel. As if doing so hasn’t caused enough problems already. Was very disappointed with Barry right then.

I do understand, though, that that was right after he saw his one true love die and he was in shock and all that, but still. I’m glad Jay talked him out of it.

I honestly did not expect that Cisco would open the box. I really didn’t think that he would have fallen for the illusion of Dante trick. I thought he would have seen through that. But grief is a powerful thing.

The scene in which Savitar spoke to Team Flash through Julian was enthralling and scary. The longer it went on, the scarier he became. I totally agree with HR on that point. Tom Felton’s acting was amazing in that scene.

Random thoughts:

  1. Is Julian Indiana Jones?
  2. The Harry Potterverse is Earth-4 confirmed!
  3. Joe and his girlfriend are so cute.
  4. Mark Hamill’s appearance was brief but worth it and hilarious.
  5. The CGI budget went up again.
  6. He time travelled again?!
  7. Why isn’t her daughter here? That’s fishy.
  8. Snow made it snow!

The Flash returns to the CW on Tuesday, January 24th at 8 PM.

Once Upon a Time S06E10 Recap

0

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

Is it just me, or was this mid-season finale different from how this show usually does them? More often than not, the mid-season finale concludes the first half of the season’s storyline but no such conclusions took place. That’s not a good thing or a bad thing; it’s just different.

ouat-610_1Surprise of the season: Gideon – of all people – is the figure under the hood who is supposedly going to kill Emma (we all know that won’t happen).  No one could have seen that coming. It was so random.

Why is he going to kill Emma? Given that he was kidnapped by his grandmother, the Black Fairy, and she’s evil, it’s safe to say that he was raised evil. But the question still remains.

Also, if something had happened to Mother Superior, and the fairies knew she had Belle and Rumple’s child under her protection, why did they – Belle and Rumple – have to call them to find out? The fairies should have called them. That would have been a much better way for that particular story to have unfolded.

ouat-610I really wish the writers had not gone in this direction with the Gold family’s story though. Not just the fact that Gideon is apparently evil now, and that in and of itself is not a bad thing, but the fact that Belle’s effort to keep him safe is now being presented as having been a mistake and a failure. The writers are making it look like she made the wrong decision and I still feel like it was the right one.

Given everything that she went through with Rumple this season and seasons past since the deterioration of their marriage, it doesn’t sit well with me that her decision is being presented that way. There really wasn’t anything else she could have done to protect Gideon from Rumple. Now that he was kidnapped by the Black Fairy and maybe turned evil, being raised by Rumple was not the worst thing that could have happened to him but it still was not ideal.

ouat-610_3At the start of the episode I thought that we would get to see Emma’s vision come true, because it was revealed that the sword that will kill her can hurt the Evil Queen without bringing harm to Regina. Emma started going after the Evil Queen and everything and then the story totally diverged into what was essentially filler with the Evil Queen and the magic lamp and Genie Aladdin. That felt a little pointless and all of that happened just to bring back Robin in order to wrap up the episode with a disappointing ending.

My biggest problem with how the show is handling the sword is that it kind of just came out of nowhere that it was the perfect weapon to defeat the Evil Queen. We’ve been seeing it all season – in Emma’s visions – but at no point was it even slightly hinted it that what kills Emma is just as important as who. I wish the writers had established its importance and built it up some before this episode. The reveal that it can kill the Evil Queen would have had more impact.

It felt like the writers decided to just throw that in at the last minute. Not that they had always intended that to be the case.

ouat-610_4The Evil Queen was terribly mishandled. She had so much potential going into it given the end of the last. The writers set themselves up to tell this epic, intriguing, very interesting story and they totally dropped the ball on that and wasted what could have been an amazing story. In fact, they spent the entirety of this half of the season fumbling and floundering with virtually all of the storylines. So far this season has been a mess.

Wish world Emma was really weird. Seeing her as a weak, cowering damsel that sings as she skips through the forest was the strangest things ever. It started to look like Regina was going to awaken Henry as the Saviour and not Emma. That would have been an interesting direction for the show to have gone in.

What happened when Regina was walking down the aisle to the Charming family though? The over head shot and the shot from the crowd looked very strange. Like the footage was sped up. It was awkward, jarring and disorienting.

Random thoughts:

  1. Emma got wiped out of existence!
  2. The costumes in Emma’s wish world are stunning.
  3. Aladdin saying “Ew” when the Evil Queen touched him was hilarious. I wish Regina hadn’t basically slut shamed her immediately after though.
  4. I kind of like the loop hole they came up with for the ownership of the lamp.
  5. I prefer Rumple as Rumple and not Mr. Gold. Seeing him here only reminded me of how awesome he used to be.
  6. Poor Aladdin getting passed around and used.
  7. Emma: “That other person kind of sucked.” Regina: “Singing Princess Emma..isn’t my favourite model.” Speaking for the audience.

Fitbit to buy Pebble

0

The year will soon come to a close, but that does not mean that the recent trend of buying up companies will take a break until next year. This time around we have reports than the popular smartwatch maker, which for many kicked off the smartwatch craze back in 2012, is up for sale. Fitbit, the fitness tech giant, is said to be in talks to purchase Pebble for a measily $34 to $40 million. This news isn’t that much of a surprise; it has been common knowledge for a while that Pebble was not making enough money to stay relevant. It was also recently announced that at least 25% of its workforce would be laid off.

Pebble had the opportunity to be bought by Citizen for a reported $740 million back in 2015, and comparing that sum to what Fitbit is offering, the shareholders at Pebble must feel pretty sad right about now.

Pebble will more than likely be phased out as a company, while Fibit uses its tech and patents to flex its muscle in the smartwatch market. after all, Pebble was pretty popular among users even though it was never a large company.

‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ Review

0

fantastic-beasts-where-find-them-movie-posterFantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is a 2016 film written and produced by J.K. Rowling and directed by David Yates. The ninth film in the Harry Potter franchise and a prequel to the previous eight films, it is inspired by the book of the same name; a text book used by Hogwarts students which was later published in real life. The film stars Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, a British magizoologist who travels to New York City – the home base of the Magical Congress of the United States of America (MACUSA). The organisation is dealing with a crisis which is exacerbating anti-wizard sentiments in the city. When his suitcase is switched with that of No-Maj Jacob Kowalski and some of his magical creatures are set free, he must traverse the streets of New York in an effort to find them.

If you’re looking for a Harry Potter nostalgia trip from this movie you’re not going to get it. It’s a different time period, with different characters and in a different setting. It does not at all feel like the other Harry Potter films. And that’s a good thing; it’s able to separate itself from them and be it’s own thing.

The film is a little different from what the trailers promised it would be. The story as presented in the trailers does happen, but there is another layer to it that is not shown.

The film plays with your expectations a bit. It makes the audience think its going in one direction and then it swerves and goes somewhere else. This is mostly because, like any good magic trick, the film uses misdirection to draw the audience’s attention elsewhere and it is effective.

The misdirections are written into the film in way that even with them thrown in, how the film arrives at its revelations still makes sense and, upon reflection, the clues do point in that direction .The film delivers on twists and surprises and they don’t feel like they came out of nowhere.

Rowling does pretty well in her screenwriting debut. It’s a tight narrative with characters who are fairly well developed. Except perhaps for Queenie who isn’t as developed as the other four main leads, but she has less of a presence in the film than they do so calling her a lead would be a bit of a stretch.

The four lead actors had very good chemistry. Their characters’ relations and interactions with each other were convincing. All of the actors performed very well.

Redmayne did his quirky little Eddie Redmayne-isms that anyone who has seen a fair number of the films he has been in would recognise. Newt Scamander had a charm and empathetic and nurturing nature that Redymayne was able to embody and portray expertly. Scamander is in some ways reminiscent of Hagrid in that the two share a love, affinity and sympathy for magical beasts.

The most relatable character is Kowalski, likely because he is the only No-Maj in the group. He is by far the funniest character – definitely the comic relief – and is very, very likable. Scamander even tells him that he is. Dan Fogler does an amazing job of bringing the character to life and enduing Kowalski with that same likability.

The film on the whole is more humorous than one would expect.

The final battle isn’t much of a “battle” and the “beast” that is wreaking havoc in New York City is quickly dispatched. Then something else happens that looks like there will be an epic final battle after all, but that is resolved quickly as well. The ending is quite anti-climatic.

Given who Grindelwald is (he was Voldemort before Tom Riddle was Voldermort), how he was portrayed in the film was disappointing. As a figure with a reputation as a great dark wizard who did terrible things and was this enormous threat, he wasn’t exactly presented that way.

He was a threat to the wizard community by way of risking their exposure and he was a dick to one character in particular, but he didn’t do anything as sinister or evil as Voldermort. Not even a little. He was not as fearsome as Deathly Hallows – and the books – would have the audience believe. By the time of the events of the film he has already developed that reputation so it’s not like it was the beginning of his rise to power and he was only now building toward his true evil-ness.

How he was used in the film was unexpected, however, and he has a much larger role and presence than fans would have presumed.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is interesting and entertaining. The film succeeds in holding your attention and although slow in some parts, is still fun and enjoyable. It’s not as thrilling as some of the other films in the franchise, but it does hold its own and is a good film that is well suited to multiple viewings. It is a worthy addition to the Potterverse.

Pure Genius S01E06 Recap

0

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

This show continually fails to make me care about it’s characters (the main cast and their various patients) and what is going on with them. I routinely watch an entire episode and come out of it feeling nothing. And that’s not good.

There are some moments here and there when it’s able to illicit some kind of response from me – positive or negative – but for the most part I do not connect with this show.

The only episode that succeeded in getting me invested was episode two. I have been waiting for this show to do that again and four episodes later, it hasn’t.

pure-genius-106_2In this week’s episode the only times I had any kind of response were toward Angie whom I find intolerable (but that’s every episode not just this one), I chuckled when I saw how they incorporated the Golden Gate Bridge into the wedding, the idea of the wedding was cute and sweet but that feeling was fleeting at best because I didn’t care about the people who were getting married and at the end of the episode when Dr. Wallace gave James the footage from the in-orbit surgery.

There were less than eight minutes left in the episode when I realised I was just waiting for it to end.

Speaking of the happy couple, it felt quite disingenuous when Dr. Brockett spoke about them with admiration and referred to “…everything working against them…” She was barely told anything about them and not nearly enough to make it seem like they had to face neigh insurmountable hurdles in their relationship. That felt odd and forced.

Far more forced than the speech that preceded it, which was a clear attempt by the writers to make viewers care about the couple and it failed. At least for me.

pure-genius-106_1As to the in-orbit surgery, it really bothered me that Dr. Channarayapatra was telling the patient what each part of the body Dr. Wallace was cutting into was and what it did. Clearly the man had medical training and knowledge; he knew exactly where Dr. Wallace was going when he was asked about his stomach pain and deduced almost instantly that his appendix was about to burst. He knows these things so why is she teaching him almost?

James was a bit of an arrogant douchebag.

pure-genius-106His impatience with the Health Department made him very unlikable. I understand that 24 hours was a long time and a lot of people could have gotten ill in that time. But as Dr. Wallace’s wife, Julianna, pointed out, he thinks he can throw money at anything and get what he wants. Granted in this situation he wasn’t throwing money at anything, but the sentiment is the same.

Random thoughts:

  1. Rolling my eyes at you Angie.
  2. Why were they looking for a priest in the first place when they have Scott?

Pure Genius airs Thursday nights at 1o PM on CBS.

Gaming News: 2nd of December, 2016 Edition

The annual hosting of the Game Awards was held last night and as usual we saw a whole load of game trailer debuts which garnered more interest that the awards themselves. Honestly to go through the entire event would take quite a while, so instead, we shall make note of the interesting highlights.

All of us who followed the event last year would find it hard not to remember how the respected director, Hideo Kojima, was barred from being part of the event thanks to his falling out with Konami. The host of the awards, Geoff Keighley, told the crowd, “What happened to Hideo Kojima last year was a tragedy,” this however received vindication this year, after he presented Kojima with the show’s Industry Icon award.

In accepting the award, Kojima said, “Last year, I thought I lost everything…but I didn’t lose anything.” It’s true, if anything to us gamers, Kojima has gotten off the sinking ship known as Konami, and to reinforce that fact, he revealed a brand new trailer for his upcoming title, Death Stranding.

Creepy yet beautiful- clearly this game is shaping up to be one of Kojima’s most interesting. The clip features a 3D-rendered version of noted filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro walking into a cavern, with a baby in capsule. What got the crowd going though was the surprise appearance from actor Mads Mikkelsen, who appears to be the main antagonist in the story. At first you had my curiosity… now you have my attention Kojima… also Fuck Konami

Other notable trailers that dropped were this Zelda: Breathe of the Wild Trailer:

And this Mass Effect Andromeda trailer:

My PC brethren, your time has come to show who is the true master race. After years of back and forth arguing between players from all the platforms about who is better, Microsoft set the arena for this much request clash of the worlds. This weekend, Microsoft is going to rollout a public crossplay test for Gears of War 4 in order to settle once and for all, who is the true maser race. The cross platform test will be open between today, Friday the 2nd, and Monday December the 5th.

Community Manager OctusTC had this to say on the Gears of War forums yesterday:

“Crossplay is divisive in any Versus experience, and Gears of War 4 is no different… from the beginning, we stated our intention to keep both platforms separate in non-cooperative game modes in order to preserve competitive balance. Conserving a fair, competitive environment remains a top priority for us.”

Ignoring that fact that PC gamers have mouse and keyboard to use games, they also have the added benefit of more powerful systems that are capable at running at higher resolutions and improved frame rates that console peasants players would not be able to match.

It is now my duty to say this to gamers from both Xbox One and the PC…Let the games begin!!!

And finally some smaller news of the week, the team behind Rocket League has announced a new free arena coming to the popular game on December the 7th. The new arena is titled, Starbase Arc, and as you can imagine, is set in the regions of space, with the playing field orbiting a planet. As with most of the updates, a new car is available, though you will have to buy it.

The trailer is listed below for your endulgement.

Let us know what you think of these gaming stories of the week, and as always, keep locked to this space
