Note 7 Investigation Concluded with Results

0

It has been three months since Samsung’s largest ever recall and, finally, the South Korean company is ready to release its findings of the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco. The much hyped flagship phone underwent two recalls due to reports of fires and explosions. Eventually it was cancelled and removed from all retail sellers.

According to Samsung, the problem which affected the first batch of Galaxy Note 7 phones was the battery being too large for the casing of the phone. This battery defect caused some of the released devices to overheat, according to the report. Having issued the initial recall for the Note 7 phones, Samsung started manufacturing the new ones with batteries from a different supplier.

Samsung, however, was in a rush to get the new phones out and completely missed a different defect in the newly provided batteries. This caused the new phones to experience similar problems to the previously released batch; overheating which causes fires and explosions.

Samsung says it has now developed a new eight-point battery check to make sure future devices don’t suffer the same fate as the Galaxy Note 7.

It is a good thing for Samsung that they finally found out what caused the Note 7’s problems, but the issue of consumer trust will still affect the tech giant. Months of speculation and rumors about the “fire phone” has not been good to Samsung’s reputation, so it will be interesting to see if the company can regain some level of trust and loyalty from its consumers. This spring, the company is expected to release its next flagship phone, the Galaxy S8.

‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ Film Review

0

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is a 2016 film written by Chris Weitz and Tony Gilroy and directed by Gareth Edwards. It is the first film in the Star Wars Anthology series and takes places immediately before Star Wars: A New Hope. The film stars Felicity Jones as Jyn Erso, daughter of Galen Erso – the unwilling designer of the Death Star – played by Mads Mikkelsen. The film tells the story of the rebels who retrieved the Death Star plans. The film also stars Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Alan Tudyk, Jiang Wen, and Forest Whitaker.

It becomes quite obvious by the midway point of the film that it more or less solely exists to fix the gaping plot hole that is the exhaust vent in the Death Star; it’s one and only weak point and the glaring vulnerability that made it so easy to destroy.

Despite this, the filmmakers manage to make a solid film built around this purpose. This is perhaps because they chose to focus on Jyn and her journey toward being involved with the Rebel Alliance and eventually stealing the Death Star plans, rather than on her father Galen and the construction of the Death Star. It’s likely a more exciting story and it’s not the route one would expect to be taken in order to retcon that specific detail. By choosing to construct the story of the film the way that they did, the filmmakers essentially killed two birds with one stone; how the rebels obtained the Death Star plans and why the exhaust vent existed.

It’s not the most compelling of stories as executed in the film, but it is serviceable.

There is plenty of action to drive the film forward, but it kind of meanders and goes nowhere for a fair bit of it’s run time. There are no real peaks or exciting moments leading up to the film’s climax. It’s middling at best for roughly – or even a little more than – two-thirds of its duration. It’s more or less the characters going from Point A to Point B until the big finale. It’s not as thrilling as the premise would suggest.

The acting in the film is competent. There is no one performance that stands out as very bad or very good. All of the actors do well in their roles and make their characters relatable and believable. Forest Whitaker’s voice as Saw Gerrera is rather odd and takes some getting used to, however.

None of the characters, besides Jyn, are particularly well developed. They just show up on screen and do what they were written to do. Here and there they give tidbits, very small ones, about what their lives have been and are like. The viewer does get some sense of who they are just by watching them, however. There is not a great deal of depth to the characters, but it’s enough to want to follow them over the course of the film and to enjoy watching them on screen.

The two best characters are K-2SO and Chirrut Îmwe, played by Alan Tudyk and Donnie Yen, because they are the comic relief and the funny badass, respectively. They’re more accessible and thereby easier to like and latch onto than the other characters, including Jyn, the main character. K-2SO is sassy and witty and literally has no filter. If he truly is what Jar Jar Binks was supposed to be, then the makers of the prequel films really dropped the ball on that character. Chirrut has some of the best action moments in the film and utters its funniest line.

Together, the two have of some of the best moments in the film. The film itself is a lot funnier than one would expect. There is humour peppered throughout and it works; it does not feel awkward or out of place.

Jyn is easy to sympathise with and the viewer fully understands the motivations behind her actions. She serves as the emotional core of the film because of her relationship with her father. About half of the film has less to do with what’s as stake given the Galactic Empire’s control of the galaxy and the completion of the Death Star, and more to do with what’s at stake for Jyn and Galen as father and daughter. When Jyn shifts her focus to the Galactic Empire and the Death Star, the reason behind it is not exactly original, but it works and it makes sense.

The CGI for the majority of the film is very good. It was seamlessly incorporated except for one scene involving a tentacle monster.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is an okay film. It’s watchable but it’s not very engaging or evocative and much of it isn’t particularly riveting. It has far more funny moments than cool or epic ones and is not as enjoyable a watch as Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It is, however, a well made film.

A Series of Unfortunate Events S01E01&02 Recap

0

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

If you watched the Jim Carrey and Emily Browning starring movie adaptation of the books, or just read the books themselves, then you pretty much know what’s going to happen in these first two episodes. The Baudelaire children’s – Violet, Klaus and Sunny – parents die tragically in a fire. Afterward they are sent to live with Count Olaf who is their “closest living relative.” Unfortunately, Count Olaf is a scoundrel who only wants the children so he can get his hands on their vast inheritance. The only problem is that it is not accessible until Violet has come of age. So Count Olaf concocts a plan to marry Violet under the guise of it being a play.

I don’t remember much from the movie – nor have I read the books – so I’ve pretty much gone into this series somewhat with fresh eyes. I can’t say much about what’s different between the two adaptations, but I will say that I thoroughly enjoy Neil Patrick Harris in the role of Count Olaf. He seems to be having a lot of fun with the role and I am having a lot of fun watching him. The standout moments with him are the montage when he gave the children a tour of the house, his eating Justice Strauss’ lamb and the insulting it under the guise of asking them if they would like to see her and his musical introduction to the children when they come back from the store.

Sunny is cute and adorable. She’s a baby, what else can you say about her? And she’s actually quite funny. She doesn’t “say” anything, but the subtitles interpreting her incoherent baby babbling  can be quite witty. For a baby to be so clever makes it all the more funny and, again, adorable.

Also, Patrick Warburton. If you’ve seen The TickThe Emperor’s New GrooveMen in Black II or anything he’s been in you can’t help but be a fan. He has the perfect voice to narrate a show that is supposed to be really depressing and the comedic chops to also make that funny. Not laugh out loud funny but at least a chuckle. And that is where this show, so far, has succeeded.

Pretty much ever depressing moment is counterbalanced with humour. So while you’re feeling sorry for the Baudelaire children you’re also laughing. Not at them or that you’re getting a kick out of their suffering, but just because how everything is delivered is humorous. This is pretty much the case with every moment in which Count Olaf is mistreating the children, with the exception of when the slapped Klaus.

Joan Cusack is also a highlight in the series. This is exactly the kind of role that she is perfect for and I like seeing her in. Malina Weissman and Louis Hynes are competent in their acting but they don’t really stand out in the cast as much as the aforementioned actors do.

I was confused for a while because – my only experience with this story being the Jim Carrey film – I expected the children to stay with various relatives as they did there. But it became apparent rather quickly that that wouldn’t be happening, as they were nearing what was the end point for that film without even a mention of them living with others. I looked it up and the Jim Carrey film adapted the stories of a few books and not just one, thereby intertwining their stories.

Surprise! Their parents are alive and actively trying to find their way back to the children. It seems that their secret society is not only looking after the well being of the children, but trying to rescue the parents as well. I don’t recall this being a part of the film. I do like Jacquelyn (poor Gustav) and want to see more of her spying and operating behind the scenes. It’s pretty clear that Olaf is, or at least was, a member of the secret society (he has that tattoo on his ankle), so she knew full well who he was when he went into the bank to speak to Mr. Poe.

I was really looking forward to watching this series, but after watching these first two episodes I’m not quite sure I was that entertained or engaged. I will continue watching, but I’m not that invested in the series. I was left a bit underwhelmed. I do like how quirky, silly and ridiculous the show is, but the show is for some reason not captivating me. Perhaps because I saw the film adaptation and there is nothing new here for me to discover or be surprised by. It is by no means bad, but I would say that so far it’s just okay.

Random thoughts:

  1. These kids look like the ones from the film.
  2. Malina Weissman kind of resembles Dakota Johnson?
  3. That green screen is really obvious.
  4. “Dump” does not even being to describe Count Olaf’s house.
  5. Either Jaquelyn is a terrible assistant or Mr. Poe is impatient.
  6. Marie Antoinette reference!
  7. No! Gustav!

Barbadian Artistes Among Semifinalists of International Soca Monarch

0

The Trinidadian International Soca Monarch competition today announced the artistes who will be performing at the semi finals come February 5th. Included in those lucky sixty-seven competitors were seven Barbadians; King Bubba, Biggie Irie, Marvay, Marzville, Peter Ram, Edwin Yearwood and Lil Rick.

In an interview with Nation Online, King Bubba said:

“Right now I am sick with a nasty bug but, on February 5 I will not be calling in sick. I will be on stage giving my best to make it to the finals. I will be in Guadeloupe the day before performing so hope all goes well for me to be in Trinidad.”

As stated on their website:

“The International Soca Monarch was established in 1993, its main aim to create an environment where soca music could be exhibited on an international stage while simultaneously being enjoyed by fans of the genre. Since then, it has evolved from being a mere competition to an institution of the carnival season earning the Friday on which it is traditionally held, the sobriquet of Fantastic Friday, synonymous with mind blowing performances, and the best of the season’s artistes.”

Grimm S06E02 Recap

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

I think it’s time we killed Renard. If he’s not dead by the end of the season, I say we riot. My feelings about him as a character have been up and down since the beginning: I’ve loved him and I’ve hated him. Right now I think you can just about guess where I’m at with him.

Just when I thought they’d nailed him with Rachel’s murder and drove him into a corner with the Trust Me Knot, he manages to wriggle his slimy self out of both. The way the deal broke down was logical and pretty clever, although the it was a pretty big loop hole that maybe they should have seen.

This episode confirmed what I had assumed coming out of last week’s; that Nick would be on the run for most, if not all, of this season. And now Hank and Wu are going to resign and can freely join in on the “fun.” It would have been a great asset if they were still on the force and could feed Nick information, though. And Trubel is gone now so she can’t even get in on any of this action.

Nick’s little magic stick is giving me some eerie “The One Ring” vibes at this point. It attacked the S.E.R.T. team when one of them took it from Nick, so it looks to have a mind of its own and like it’s corrupting Nick and making him obsessed with it. If he’d had started hissing “my precious” I would not have been surprised.

Using the cloth as a starting point to find out more about it’s origins and power make perfect sense and I am one hundred percent behind Eve/Juliette in this endeavour. She’s right, that thing will likely kill them eventually once they’ve served their purpose or it simply doesn’t like them anymore or perceives them as a threat. I am very curious as to what it has in mind for Eve/Juliette. It did save her after all. And since she is the one spear heading the hunt for answers about it, I suspect that if and when she gets too close to some not so pleasant information, it’ll try to off her.

Diana managed to help someone for once in a way that did not involve violence or murder. When she’s not being the scariest thing in the room, she’s actually very cute and sweet. And for someone who desperately wants Adalind and Renard to be together, she’s surprisingly not hostile toward Nick. She was also surprisingly funny here, especially when she asked Monroe “why” when he praised her abilities and said she likes Kelly because he “doesn’t talk much.”

Of course she can see the symbols on the cloth and of course there are more of them than the three Eve/Juliette could see. Diana’s been more or less a mcguffin since she became part of the story. So doing literally anything the writers can think of and need at any given moment is just a given. If I had to be left alone in a room with her I’d be just as scared and uncomfortable as Monroe.

It seems like he and Rosalie will be the only characters who will have some semblance of their normal lives back this season. They kind of have to sit this one out, what with Rosalie being pregnant and all. I will forever be in love with these two and root for their relationship. It’s a shame that this is the last season and we won’t get to see them as parents.

I loved seeing hexenbiest Adalind back and performing magic. Unfortunately it looks like she will be going back to being the pretty little damsel she’s been for a while longer since she has to go back to Renard. But Adalind being Adalind, we’ll get some zingers and some shade – no pun intended – out of her. She does not even attempt to hide how much she hates Renard.

Random thoughts:

  1. That rear projection was very obvious.
  2. They didn’t read Renard his Miranda rights.
  3. He called Adalind? Does she practise that kind of law?
  4. Monroe: “…if Diana disappears we can’t be held accountable.” Agreed.
  5. Diana knows she can’t use her powers like that in public right? Does she even need a sitter?
  6. I love Bud.
  7. Guess we won’t be seeing much of Trubel this season.

America’s Next Top Model C23E06 Recap

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

So Kyle And Marissa (Karissa? Myle? Are we even bothering to give them a couple name?) came out of nowhere and disappeared just as quickly. Right as I was starting to wrap my head around the randomness of it (they’re total opposites) and find them to be rather cute. And in the double dose of drama we got this week, they were at the centre of one of the two instances.

First was Binta and Tatiana fighting over the cleanliness of the shower. Angry Black woman Binta is back and really, I’m getting tired of seeing her be an angry Black woman shouting and screaming at others. And more often than not she starts it.

Am I the only one who was excited to see Tatiana go off on her? Tatiana’s been fairly quiet and we haven’t seen that side of her yet. She didn’t quite go from zero to one hundred like she said she could – and thank goodness she didn’t because if she is as prone to hitting people as she said, she’d have been sent home – she hovered somewhere between fifty and sixty. But still, good going Tatiana.

Then later in the episode was Marissa getting into it with Courtney, after the latter inserted herself into the Karissa lover’s spat. This one wasn’t as dramatic because Courtney didn’t retaliate, but it was weird how she was just standing there watching Marissa and the others.

This week’s challenge looked as fun as it was stressful. The girls had to jump on a trampoline and pose in mid-air, but they only had one take the get it right.

I thought Binta and Coryanne’s photos were bad (you couldn’t see much of Binta’s face and what you could see was not attractive or appealing; Coryanne was just there doing nothing), but Kyle’s was absolutely atrocious. I can’t tell if Kyle is steadily getting worse or if the other girls are just getting that much better. It may be a bit of both. For someone who started this cycle as a front runner for me, she is quickly falling behind.

Paige one hundred percent deserved to win the challenge. As Ashley said, her photo looked like a campaign. Her pose and her face were strong and powerful. She had the best photo by far.

Drew had the perfect line to sum up the challenge; “When it’s done right it’s amazing. When it’s done wrong it’s terrible.”

For the boxing inspired photo shoot the girls had to pose with supermodel Chanel Iman and use what they’d learnt in the challenge; posing with motion and action.

The best of the week for me were Coryanne and Courtney. No surprise that Courtney can deliver with a photograph; she demonstrates that every week. Her photo was strong, graceful and sexy, but she didn’t incorporate any action. Coryanne for the first time brought an incredible photo two weeks in a row and here’s hoping she does it again next week. She’s getting better and better and proving she belongs in the competition. Her photo was FIERCE! The face, the pose, everything; from the tension in her arms to those sucked in cheeks that brought out the angles in her face. Stunning!

I disagree with the judges about Cody’s photo. It was not good. She looked like a deer in headlights and like she was in the process of sitting on the toilet. Kyle’s photo turned out better than I thought it would be, but there was something missing in the face and it’s the same one she does from week to week. I was not impressed with Marissa’s pose. She could have done more with her body and given it a shape, but the face was on point. Tatiana’s pose was awkward and her face did nothing for me.

Click for full size image.

Paige’s photo left me speechless but only because I’m not sure how I feel about it. It’s not bad but it’s definitely not her best. I applaud her control of her face though. Binta had no action in her photo, but it was beautiful. The face could have been stronger, but the pose I like – especially the tension in her hand and arm. My eye immediately went to Chanel in India’s photo. India’s body, as bodies go, is amazing but not so much the pose. I didn’t like the floppy hand on her right arm. Her face was fine. Krislian at least succeeded in not being too sexy. Her pose were bland, her face was pretty and she looked short.

I was surprised by the bottom two at first because I thought India would be there with Kyle. But India did have a stronger face and pose than Krislian and has performed better overall in the competition.

Given how much she was featured in the episode this week and last, I spent the entire episode thinking it would be Kyle going home. Especially when how she did at the challenge and the shoot is factored in. When it came down to her and Krislian, however, I was no longer sure. I was surprised, though, that Kyle stayed. I’m confident that if she doesn’t step it up next week she’ll be the next one to go.

Random thoughts:

  1. Someone finally said “fierce.”
  2. Why is the cleanliness of the house always an issue?
  3. Seriously, Marissa started out as such a mean girl but now she’s cool and one of my favourites in the house.
  4. Rooting for Krislian to kick ass in this shoot.
  5. Kyle came on a little too strong.
  6. I wonder if Binta would hug anyone if she was sent home.

Pokemon Go Brings in The Money

0

Who ever doubted the staying power of Pokémon Go was made to eat their heart out yesterday after its 2016 earnings were published for all to see. This massive “free to play” game made an estimated $950 million in 2016. Yes, you read that correctly; almost a billion dollars was made on this game in its first year.

Think about that; this free to play game made took a little over a hundred days to reach $800 million. That is truly insane. This Niantic made title was their first game to reach $600 million and clearly it will be its first to reach the $1 billion mark later this year. These profits are expected to increase as Pokémon Go expands to other markets (it only reached India a month ago).

Information compliments App Annie

Pokémon Go took two months to reach 500 million downloads since it launched in early July, 2016. App Annie believes that the game’s appeal to non-gamers took it too new heights, but the Pokémon franchise and the social aspects of the game were also big factors.

As long as Niantic continues to update the game in a timely manner and add appropriate holiday events to rekindle interest, Pokémon Go will continue to bring in mass fan appeal and attention.

Girlish Number E06 Recap

Kaetan desu! (*≧▽≦)

Kuzu has proven that he is indeed the highest form of kuzu (trash). Even though the budget is well in the red, he still used company funds to fly the cast and staff out to Okinawa, without telling anyone at his office in order to shoot bonus footage. Chitose is skittish in the presence of a camera as per her live stream disaster from the last episode, but once Gojo assures her that it is only a recording and not the former, Chitose reverts back to her old detestable self. The video is supposed to allow the viewers to connect with the seiyuu on a more personal level by shooting some fun along the Okinawan beach-side, but Kazuha is greatly displeased about the quality of the swimsuits they have been assigned until Gojo gets both sides to compromise.

The shoot is over and the girls are drinking up an alcoholic storm in their hotel room. Through all the silliness, Kazuha and Koto find time for a conversation  as they reflect on their marketability as the eldest members of the main cast, which ends up turning into a fun-filled pillow fight with the others. We even see Kazuha’s Yamagata accent slip out in a state of drunkenness and the others have a good laugh out of the whole thing.

Back home, while Kuzu is reprimanded for his actions by his supervisor, Momoka is approached by the Producer of a show that her mother once worked on. He is interested in casting her for a part alongside her mother. Momoka has this air of resent about her. She hates the fact that people are always bringing up her mother in conversations(her mother is a very famous seiyuu) and not acknowledging her own talents, which she clearly seems to work hard in developing in order to set herself apart. Her parents tell her that they will continue to support her as they always have, no matter what her decision is. This eases Momoka’s anxiety a bit and she happily heads up to bed.

At the less than exciting Kusure wrap-up party, Trash announces the second season, but he ends up passing everything over to Towada later, much to his unpleasant surprise. What will happen when things kick back off? See you in the next episode!
