You won SMS Model Search back in 2017. How was your experience with the competition?
My experience was both challenging and incredibly rewarding. Honestly, it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
At the time, SMS Model Search placed a strong emphasis on physical training, which pushed us in ways many people wouldn’t expect. It required a level of mental strength that not everyone is prepared for.
I actually wanted to quit on the very first day because of how intense it was, but one of my friends in the competition, someone I had encouraged to step out of her own shell and join with me, ended up being the very person who pushed me to stay.
I’ve always been a confident person and I’ve always loved everything about fashion. SMS Model Search didn’t just highlight what I already had, it pushed me to become the best version of myself. Not just within the competition, but in every other endeavour I’ve pursued since.
What made the journey even more meaningful is that I wasn’t necessarily the person people expected to win. I don’t fit the typical model standard either. And while there was strong support behind some of the other delegates, there were only a few people who truly believed I could take the title. So, winning wasn’t just a victory; it was a reminder that self-belief, resilience, and authenticity can set you apart.
Overall, it was an experience that challenged me, shaped me, and prepared me for so much more.
What opportunities did it lead to, if any?
SMS Model Search opened the door to a number of incredible opportunities for me. Shortly after, I was able to be a part of the Barbados Manufacturers’ Exhibition, now known as the BMA Trade and Innovation Expo, which is one of the island’s premier showcases for fashion, business, and innovation.
From there, I was contracted with the Crop Over band Aura Experience, led by Rorrey Fenty, where I remained for nearly nine years; an experience that truly deepened my involvement in the industry. Since then, I’ve participated in a range of fashion shows and photoshoots. One of my most recent and proudest moments was modeling at New York Fashion Week Festival, which was truly a full-circle experience for me.

Your mother is the first Miss Holetown Queen of the Festival titleholder. Did her involvement in pageantry inspire your desire to do something similar?
I’ve always admired that my mum was the very first Miss Holetown Queen. Seeing her pave the way in pageantry truly inspired me, and it motivated me to participate in SMS Model Search at the first opportunity I had, back in 4th form.
You’re now the Creative Director for SMS Model Search’s upcoming revival. What from your experience as a contestant are you bringing into the role?
As a former contestant, I can immediately see the delegates who already have that natural confidence and talent. They just need guidance to enhance what they already have. I also spot those with incredible potential who may be a bit shy or reserved, and part of my role is helping them come out of their shell so they can truly shine and emerge as their best selves.
What made you decide to return to the competition in this capacity?
During the final year of my Bachelor’s degree, I found myself reflecting deeply on what I truly wanted for my future. While I specialized in marketing because of my natural creativity, I realized I wasn’t passionate about the more traditional areas like economics or finance.
It wasn’t until my final semester, during a strategic marketing course, that everything shifted for me. I recognized that I didn’t want to follow a conventional path as a Marketing Manager within an agency or corporate department. I wanted something more dynamic, something that would allow me to create, influence, and make a broader impact.
That realization sparked a new level of clarity and ambition. I began exploring Master’s programs that aligned with my vision and supported a more expansive, creative career path.
Just before that, the opportunity to be involved in SMS Model Search re-emerged, and it all clicked. I discovered that the role I had been envisioning, Creative Director, was not only real, but exactly where I saw myself.
Stepping into this role with SMS Model Search is more than just producing a show for me; it’s a platform to showcase my creativity on a much larger scale. It allows me to go beyond the runway and demonstrate the full extent of my vision, storytelling ability, and impact.
The last competition was in 2018. Why revive it now?
After experiencing the competition as a contestant, I developed a deep appreciation for the art of visual storytelling and fully grasped the intention behind the production. Inspired by that experience, I went on to conceptualize a complete Model Search production for 2019, prior to its eventual discontinuation.
Now, I get the chance to produce that very same show, with a few tweaks of course. The St. Michael School had reached out hoping to revive the production in 2025. However, I was completing my final year of my Bachelor’s degree in Canada, so I wasn’t able to assist then. We remained aligned in our vision, and upon my return, we confirmed our commitment to stage the production in 2026.

This year’s competition honours former Creative Director, the late Karlos Yearwood. How would you describe his leadership?
Karlos Yearwood’s leadership was truly visionary. He had an exceptional ability to see beyond the surface and bring concepts to life in a way that felt both powerful and purposeful.
Ultimately, my hope is that SMS Model Search continues to empower students, expand opportunities, and demonstrate that there are countless ways to be part of this dynamic, evolving industry.
His work was never just about producing a show, it was about telling a story, creating an experience, and leaving a lasting impression on everyone involved.

He led with intention, creativity, and a deep sense of passion for the craft. At the same time, he was incredibly impactful in how he guided others. He created a safe space for growth, pushed individuals to see their potential, and inspired a level of excellence that extended far beyond the stage.
His legacy is one of innovation, mentorship, and transformation, and it continues to influence the direction and standard of this year’s production.
What impact did he have on SMS Model Search?
Karlos Yearwood’s impact on SMS Model Search was both transformative and enduring. He elevated the competition beyond a traditional model search and redefined it as a platform for storytelling, creativity, and personal development.
Under his direction, the production became more intentional, more expressive, and far more impactful, not just for the audience, but for every contestant who stepped onto that stage.
He set a standard of excellence that challenged everyone involved to think bigger and push beyond their limits. His influence shaped the identity of SMS Model Search, turning it into an experience that people connected with on a deeper level.
Even now, his vision continues to guide the direction of the show. The foundation he built is what allows us to move forward with purpose, ensuring that his legacy is not only remembered, but carried on and evolved.
What can we expect from this year’s model search?
This year’s SMS Model Search comes to life under the powerful theme “Rebirth of the Crown.” It represents a revival on multiple levels: the long-awaited return of the competition itself, the resurgence of the modelling and pageant industry in Barbados after the decline caused by COVID-19, and a renewed celebration of fashion, creativity, and the vibrant expression of youth.
Audiences can expect a production that goes beyond the runway. Each contestant will be challenged to embody a concept, tell a story, and translate the theme into a visual and emotional experience. From couture designs inspired by gemstones to performances that showcase personality and presence, the competition is designed to highlight creativity, individuality, and versatility.

This year’s production also reflects a larger vision: to raise the standard of fashion and performance in Barbados while honoring the legacy of past leaders who have shaped SMS Model Search. Every element, from styling and choreography to lighting and stage design, has been carefully curated to create an immersive, high-energy experience for both participants and viewers.
In essence, this is not just a model search, it is a celebration of talent, creativity, and resilience, signaling a bold and exciting new chapter for SMS Model Search and the industry as a whole.
What are your hopes for SMS Model Search moving forward?
My hope for SMS Model Search moving forward is that it becomes a platform where more students can be involved and see that the competition is about much more than modeling alone.
I want students to understand that there are multiple facets to the industry; creative direction, styling, choreography, marketing, production, storytelling, etc, and that they can contribute, learn, and grow in any of these areas.
I envision the competition inspiring young people to explore their passions, develop their skills, and gain hands-on experience in a professional setting. Beyond discovering talent on the runway, SMS Model Search can serve as a learning ground where creativity, collaboration, and innovation are nurtured, and where students gain insights into the fashion and entertainment industry as a whole.

Ultimately, my hope is that SMS Model Search continues to empower students, expand opportunities, and demonstrate that there are countless ways to be part of this dynamic, evolving industry.
