Who are some other Bajans in your field whose work you admire?

By Krishtun! By Krishtun! By Krishtun!!!

She has been my biggest inspiration from the jump.

A core memory for me is when I was 15 and first discovered that there were crochet tutorials on YouTube. One of the first ones I tried following was by her. It was a blue crochet bikini bottom and I was so excited to follow along, because at the time I was obsessed with bikinis.

I remember when the tutorial started I literally jumped upon hearing her Bajan accent, because at the time I didn’t know of many crocheters in Barbados and especially not of any on YouTube. It was very special to me to watch and follow her tutorial because she is Bajan and I felt like, “Wow she is amazing and if she can do it, so can I!”

Who is the one person that you would love to design something for?

Rihanna AND Tyla. I cannot pick just one. It has to be both of them!

What do you think makes you unique as an artist/creative?

Patience and extreme attention to detail. I am somewhat obsessive when it comes to my craft, so I will start over a project as many times as needed until I am fully satisfied. It does not matter how long it takes. Art cannot be rushed.

Of all of the projects you’ve worked on, which one was the most creatively fulfilling?

All 5 of the National Heroes crochet tapestries I’ve done so far have been extremely fulfilling creatively. But if I had to pick, I’d say the one of The Right Excellent Sir Grantley Adams was [the] most creatively fulfilling. I’m in love with how that came out.

What does “perfection” mean to you? Do you think that it’s worth pursuing?

I think of perfection as the point when what I’ve created or executed exactly matches the original vision I had in mind. It’s when the gap between my imagination, expectations, and reality becomes as small as possible, or nonexistent.

It’s worth pursuing to me because I naturally gravitate towards realism. I’ve always admired abstract artists because it’s a way of thinking that doesn’t come as naturally to me, so I have a lot of respect for how they express ideas in a less literal way. For me though, the greatest satisfaction is found in bringing a vision to life as literally as possible.
