Why have you chosen to be an artist? What is your “raison d’être”?
I believe art chose me, I’ve been creative from the time I could remember. Luckily my parents picked up on it at an early age, and did everything they could to foster that talent.
How has your work and your process changed over time?
My creativity is ever evolving. Throughout my years I’ve done fashion design, interior product design, and now visual arts. I’ve been painting for the last 5 years now and while my process is pretty much the same as when I started, my work has definitely gotten more culture centered.
I’ve learned to use bold colors (which I was initially very afraid of) and picked up skills that can only come from dedicated practice. Those skills have helped me to execute my ideas and concepts in a more confident manner.
Have you ever considered giving up on the creative industry? If so, what kept you going? If not, what is it that reassures you that you’re on the right path?
Yes! I’ve had tough moments for sure, especially here in Barbados where it can sometimes feel like my effort and talent is overlooked. The support from my friends and family has been unwavering and keeps me grounded in those moments, as well as the support I receive internationally. The hope of one day truly capturing the hearts of my fellow Bajans with my work also keeps me motivated.
How do you know when something is finished and doesn’t need any more work?
For me, it takes a few days of staring at the work, waiting to see if there’s anything else that comes to me, if nothing else makes sense to add or if there isn’t that sense of ‘something’s missing’ then I know it’s done.
When people engage with your work, what do you want them to get out of it?
I want them to feel, I want them to walk away feeling something. Sometimes the work is about transporting you to a familiar place, sometimes it’s to settle your mind and bring you peace, other times there’s a message that I hope the viewer can grasp and take to heart. Whatever my intention is, what is most important to me is that the energy of the work is received by the patron.
