Why have you chosen a career as an artist? What is your “raison d’être”?
At a young age I gravitated towards art. And even though I moved away from it, I kept finding myself coming back to it in one way or another. After a while I accepted that it is the path I am to be on so I committed fully.
How has your work and your process changed over time?
I did not do much Painting at school, nor in my early days as a professional artist, so I’m pretty much self-taught when it comes to painting. It was through trial and error that I refined the various methods I currently use.
How do you know when something is finished and doesn’t need anymore work?
“You’ve got to know when to hold ’em, know when to fold’ em, know when to walk away, know when to run”- Kenny Rogers.
An art piece is never really done, but I know when it is close to what I’m trying to achieve and when I have the feeling that I should stop before I mess it up and give myself more work. That’s when I stop.
What do you consider your best work? Why?
I do my best work with portraiture. It is not only about capturing the likeness of the sitter/subject, but also their essence and the feeling that they bring to those around them.
For you as an artist, is there a work of art or an artist that resonates with you on a profound level?
I can’t say that there is 1 piece that stands out, however there are many artists local, regional and international whose works I appreciate.
