Once Upon A Time S06E05 Recap

0

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

We finally got to see Aladdin!

ouat-s06e05I love the way the story from the film was adapted for Once Upon a Time. Jasmine is far more proactive and less of a damsel in distress. She is trying to protect and save her kingdom and isn’t just roaming around the very dangerous streets of Agrabah because she’s bored in the palace and escaping an arranged marriage (which isn’t a terrible reason to run away from home, but I do prefer the reason presented on the show).

Deniz Akdeniz is a gorgeous man, but I would have loved to see Avan Jogia play Aladdin (it’s not like he doesn’t already have a relationship with Disney).

Akdeniz and Karen David acted very well in this episode. It always amazes me when guest starts come on this show and out perform the regular cast. Their performances were believable and I actually forgot about the Disney animated film as I was watching. I wasn’t constantly comparing the Aladdin story here to that of the animated film, despite how many times Emma brought up the latter. That was a bit annoying.

The moment that Aladdin discovered his powers – saving Jasmine from a cave-in in the Cave of Wonders – was a little underwhelming and he defeated Jafar far too easily considering that he only just got his magic and Jafar was a skilled and practised sorcerer. It wasn’t believable.

Overall though, I really liked what they did with Aladdin.

Although, I was a little disappointed that after all of that searching and all of that devastation because she thought that Aladdin was dead, all Jasmine wanted him for was for him save Agrabah. I would have liked it so much if by the end of the episode we had seen Jasmine and Aladdin kiss. Because like Emma pointed out, they were together in the movie! Can they be together in the show please?

ouat-s06e05_2If there is one thing I am grateful to the Evil Queen for, it is forcing Emma to tell her family about her visions and the fact that she is going to die. It’s about damn time!

I agree with Snow; this is exactly the time when she should be talking to her mother – and her extended family. Her life is in danger. An impending death is something you tell your family about! She was doing the exact same thing Aladdin did and that she pointed out to him; he didn’t trust in the people who love him.

And her family consists of professional heroes! They constantly same themselves, each other and everyone else. These are the people that she could turn to, to help her in this situation and they just happen to be her family. They are the people best qualified to save her life and the fact that they love her gives them even more of a reason to literally go to the ends of the earth if they have to in order to save her.

Emma herself pointed it out later in the episode; “I believe in us to find a third way. It’s kind of what we do.”

Killian is the one person that I thought that she should have told above all others, if she was ever going to. Which is why I’m glad she entrusted the shears to him at least. Unfortunately, he did what I expected he would; keep them and lie to her about it. I suspect he will be using those.

ouat-s06e05_3The Evil Queen and Zelena had their own little adventure this episode. They went to the spa.

Which was so, incredibly normal.

So normal it was kind of weird.

Zelena is now firmly Team Evil Queen and has pretty much gone back to being wicked. I’m not too pleased about that. I get why she is. I fully understand; she’s found the family she’s always wanted in the Evil Queen. But this is such a step backward for her character. She doesn’t need to turn 100% good or anything. She just needs to take her baby and live her life peacefully and have nothing to do with anything, not getting involved in any of the good versus evil shenanigans going on in Storybrooke and just be better person for Robin.

The CG in the opening shot of Agrabah was probably the best the CG on this show has ever looked…but not much needs to be done to be better than that to be honest.

Random thoughts:

  1. Of course Jasmine fell.
  2. OMG Emma! Just tell them!
  3. Could the Evil Queen always turn herself into other people?
  4. Aladdin: “And I could show you the world.” Cue music!

Haikyuu!! S03E03 Recap

Kaetan desu! (*≧▽≦)

As of last week’s episode we saw Karasuno finally begin to gain some ground as they got used to Ushijiwa’s powerful spikes and serves and Teno’s direct challenge to Hinata. He takes on Kageyama and similarly does the same move from the end of the last episode. We learn that Tendo is also known as the Guess Monster for his great predictions where an aimed spike will go, so he can move his arms appropriately for a block attack, which proves so problematic that Tanaka eventually is forced to call a timeout. Kageyama is clearly frustrated about his spike being blocked, but Ukai explains the technique to the team, and lets them know that they’ll have to not be so obvious with their setups. Because Tendo is guessing where the ball is going to go, there is a chance that he’ll be wrong sometimes.

The score is now 3-5 to Shiratorizawa in the second set with Shiratorizawa to serve. While Tendo is busy gloating to himself, Kageyama uses the opportunity to create a quick right over his head. Tendo realized this and taunts Kagemaya on how hates really hates losing. Karasuno then begins to take advantage of this, scoring a few points, but Tendo is determined to beat everyone on Karasuno’s team all by himself by using the spikes against them. But this scene where the wind rushes next to the the ball from Ushijima’s spike…talk about overkill. Hinata is then substituted for Tsukishima, who Tendo then proceeds to mock calling him the ‘normal guy’ in a condescending voice. Tendo tries to set up what resembles a timelag attack to Kageyama, but Tsukishima sees through it and completely blocks him. Tsukishima then in turns mocks Tendo to his great frustration.

haikyuus03e03-9
But that speed tho….

In the next set of plays, Tsukishima takes note of Shiratorizawa’s setter and adjusts his eyes and blocks to suit and ends up assisting in the scoring of several points for Karasuno. This happens several times and finally causes the Shiratorizawa coach to lose his marbles when two players hesitate and get the ball and stare at each other instead. Hinata and Suga are substituted into rotation again. Suga serves, Shiratorizawa tries to attack, but the spike from Tendo is intercepted, which then in turn, creates an opportunity for Karasuno. Suga and Kageyama switch positions and then initiate a fake synchronized attack with Kageyama successfully spiking the ball into the opposite court.

haikyuus03e03-1Yamaguchi finally get his chance to serve after glaring in the direction of the coaches bench for so long. He executes his jump float serve and everything looks good for Karasuno, as Shiratorizawa’s formation breaks but the setup was in Ushijima’s favor and he spikes right through them. Karasuno calls for another timeout. Ukai reminds them to keep utilizing one touches and rebounds and results are bound to show later. As thee had back onto the court, Tsukishima makes a surprise statement. He wishes to set the timing for the three-person block to which the others agree.

After the next serve, Shiratorizawa begins to setup Ushijima’s spike, the three-person wall made of Kageyama, Tsukishima and Azumane perfectly time their wall. Ushijima spikes past them but that was part of the plan to get Nishinoya in to get in the receive. Tendo believes that Azumane will spike but Tsukishima gets one over him and scores, successfully complete their ‘total defense’ strategy.

haikyuus03e03-6

As the episode ends, the score is tied in the second set at 22 each. See you next time for episode 4, “The Halo Around the Moon”. This was definitely Tsukishima’s week.

Haikyuu!! S03E02 Recap

0

Kaetan desu! (*≧▽≦)

It’s only the first game and Karasuno is still struggling with getting used to Shiratorizawa’s playstyle. After misdirecting another spike from Ushijima, Nishinoya makes a promise insisting that he’ll get used to the spike in three rounds. It is then that Tanaka’s sister, Saeko makes an observation that Ushijima is left-handed. Karasuno’s former middle blocker Yusuke Takinoue lets her know that Ushijima is in a position known as the ‘opposite’, which on a court would make him diagonal from the setter, in this case, Kageyama. The Shiratorizawa players are focusing all of their attacks onto Ushijima and as such, are always prepared to set up an attack from either the front or the back line.haikyuus03e02-3

Things take a better turn in the moment as Tanaka finally scores Karasuno’s first point of the game. After a brief celebration Saeko asks Makoto Shimada, the team’s former wing spiker what is so special about the left-handed players. Shimada tells her that right-handed players usually have trouble playing against those who are left handed. Takinoue elaborates on that by explaining that when a single blocker goes up they jump facing their opponent’s dominant hand, which means they’re a shoulder’s width apart, giving the left hander more control of the situation.

The score is 8-3 in Shiratorizawa’s favor when a technical timeout occurs. Yachi explains to Saeko that this only occurs during a five-set match when one of the teams hits 8 or 16 points. Ukai lets the team know that they need to make Ushijima feel as though there is some sort of a wall with their blocking skills.  He needs them to first be able to touch the ball by tightening their defense; even if that means that they aren’t able to stop the spike.

The game resumes and Ushijima continues to score points off Nishinoya’s misdirection. Akiteru, who is Tsukishima’s brother, believes that it is because of the spin involved when spiking  as a left-hander. He also says that Tsukishima is the opposite of a player who moves based on sensations.  The more he feels let down, the calmer he becomes.  He ends only believing in the information that his eyes can see.  However because of that Tsukishima gets himself into the path of the spike, barely touching it with his fingers. The spike hurts one of his fingers which he ends up getting taped in the next technical timeout.

haikyuus03e02-4

As the boys are heading back onto the court Tanaka tries to get them to relax but then he notices why they have failed to do so. Ushijima is up to serve. Ukai states that while Ushijima does not have as great precision as Oikawawa, his serves can still be considered a powerful force to reckon with. He is proved right  when to see Ushijima finally serves but  Daichi cannot maintain enough control of the receive and it goes out of bounds. Tsukishima raises doubts within himself about the first set, but he soon notices Nishinoya. Nishinoya is just so determined to make that first successful receive off of Ushijima’s serve that he is giving off an aura of unbelievable proportions.

haikyuus03e02-6

Ushijima finally serves and Nishinoya’s determination pays off. The recieve goes straight up in the air. Kageyama takes advantage of the play and fakes a spike setup and sets to Tanaka instead who follows up with a spike, claiming Karasuno’s eighth point. Nishinoya’s play is clearly a major breakthrough for the team’s momentum.

haikyuus03e02-7haikyuus03e02-8

Tsukishima and Nishinoya rotate out with Hinata and Sugawara, who is serving once. Suga serves, but Ushijima doesn’t go for it. Instead, another player sets up a spike attack but Ushijima, once more, doesn’t go for it but they gain the point anyway. After trading several points each, Kageyama and Hinata  decide to begin making their move. Ushijima spikes, but Nishinoya barely gets the ball up. INstead of spiking, Hinata does a rebound and then goes to do the crazy quick setup.  However Ushijima  surprises them by actually receiving the spike and then sternly insists that he finishes the point, which he does successfully. Shiratorizawa has now claimed the first game. Tendo, another wing spiker notices this and is quick to point that Ushijima, who is normally only concerned with himself, is actually competing against another player, which makes this match more interesting.

As the players prepare for the next game the Shiratorizawa players inquire as to how Ushijima met Hinata.  He explained the scenario for season 2 when he randomly came across Hinata  trespassing on their school grounds, who then had the nerve  to challenge him in the tournament. However he severely dislikes Hinata stating “I hate confidence that has no basis” *jeez cold. The next game begins and Tsutomu serves for Shiratorizwa, but Daichi  see through it and gets the recieve. Karasuno  sets up a fake synchronization  attack which hides Kageyama setting the ball back to Daichi who spikes it past the defense. Ukai sees that the team is  beginning to make more and more contact with the ball. At this rate, they just have to continue using the strategy they came up with and attacking at any open chance.

Tsukishima serves and after a few passes, Kageyama sets up Hinata for the quick, but he is blocked by Tendo instead of Ushijima. SURPRISE! Tendo challenges Hinata with a smug look on his face. “If you want to beat Ushijima, you’re going to have to beat me first. Ya know?”

As the episode ends, the score is now 4-2 in favor of Shiratorizawa in the second set. See you next time for episode 3, “Guess Monster”

Gaming News: 21st October, 2016 Edition

0

After years of hiding in the ever growing shadow created by Microsoft and Sony in the console wars, Nintendo needed to come back fighting. Every year, the Japanese company was the butt of many jokes for several reasons- when one thinks about a console that is supported heavily by 1st and 3rd party game studios, the Wii U was never thought about, and for good reason at that.

Go ahead, name for me the top 5 new games released on the Wii U in the last nine months… no clue? Yes I thought so as well.

I am pleased to say that Nintendo has decided to come back with a vengeance; I give you, the Nintendo Switch!!

Bizarre name yes, however it does serve a purpose- this console (not even sure you can call it that) is modular, and able to go from being used in your typical home setting hooked up to a television, or taking on the go and using the built in screen to play your games. Sounds crazy? It is, but it is also brilliant!

Things to keep in mind after seeing that promo video:

  • The dock is not the main console unit- Nintendo confirmed with IGN “the main unit of Nintendo Switch is the unit that has the LCD screen.” The dock’s main functions are TV output and power/charging, which effectively means this system was indeed designed from the ground up to be a portable device
  • This system is not backwards compatible, so there be no Wii U or 3DS games available natively to the system
  • It has Amiibo support- Yay!

Creating a system that fuses the much loved original Wii and the equally loved 3DS, is a bold move by Nintendo, let us look forward to official release to see how practical the device is.

This week’s news was not only about Nintendo, after nearly six years since the original release of Red Dead Redemption, Rockstar games has finally announced the sequel along with a trailer. Once again we get to dive deep in to this gritty western themed open-world game. Enjoy the trailer and all its goodness down below.

Lastly we have some rumours from the grapevine, of the possible upcoming release of Diablo 4?

Several shady reports have occurred recently that the new “Diablo 4” is in the works and development, but the new stayed as a rumor until this week. Where some attendees to BlizzCon claimed that a four-sided dice that Blizzard is about to give away has some print error a there is a subtle tease. Also in a tween from David Brevik, one of Blizzard’s game advisors, showed an image of constellation with a message that hinted a new Diablo game is in the works. All of this sounds pretty far-fetched if you ask me, however we shall stay tuned as more info comes to light.

How to Get Away With Murder S03E05 Recap

0

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

And just when we thought that Annalise would finally get some much needed help…she didn’t.

I wish her suspension had stuck and the Keating Five hadn’t discovered that the new kid was behind the “KILLER” posters. Firstly, the discovery was anticlimactic. Secondly, what the hell is new kid’s problem with her? Thirdly, now she has no reason to seek out help.

Annalise going to the AA meeting was a step in the right direction. She needs help. She knows it, the school president knows it, Wes knows it, the others know it, Nate knows it, the audience knows it. Everyone knows it. She needs help! Dammit writers, let her get it! They are truly doing her character a disservice by keeping her in this state.

Has she not hit rock bottom yet? I’d say she has. Drunk calling Nate? Drinking herself silly to the point that Wes has to take care of her? If she hasn’t hit rock bottom yet she’s pretty darn close.

imageI loved the scene of her in the salon getting her weave installed (I thought she wore wigs though?). It was probably the most sista-ly thing to ever happen on the show – though not an entirely uncommon image seen in motion pictures.

It was mundane in the best way and showed a different side of Annalise, in a very different setting. She actually has friends! Or something close to it. The atmosphere, their rapport, their camaraderie was everything!

What is it with Frank and killing fathers? He tried to kill his own as a teen, he killed Wes’ and he killed Bonnie’s.

Given how close he seemed to be with his  family in that one episode in which he took home Laurel, I’m surprised he tried to kill his father. Also, I have no gauge for old he was supposed to be in that flashback because he looked no younger or different; except for the hair.

Bonnie hugging Frank when she saw him and thanking him for killing her father was unexpected but not surprising.

I didn’t fully understand the depths of their connection and understanding of each other until this episode. There was a tenderness between them that I don’t recall having seen before and he seemed to be taking care of her as much as she was taking care of him.

imageIt was pretty obvious that they’d end up sleeping together after Frank sold her that dream of the life she could have if she ran away with him. I don’t think he necessarily meant that she was to have that life with him, I think he meant in general.

Although, given their shared history and their respective damage, I think they could work together. Not as a couple per say, just as two people who care about each other and are trying to find some semblance of joy and contentedness.

Bonnie and Frank are two screwed up people who need love and understanding, patience and compassion and deserve to be happy.

It only occurred to me this week that perhaps Laurel wasn’t pursuing Frank so aggressively because she’s lovesick, but because she’s known that she’s pregnant this entire time.

I assumed that her pregnancy occurred during the events that we’ve been seeing this season, but there are three weeks left until the fire and we haven’t seen her have sex with anyone. So I think it’s reasonable to think that she started the season already pregnant.

But, Wes is about to break up with Meggie. She could sleep with him next week and two weeks is enough time for a pregnancy to be detectable.

We have more clues about who is under the sheet now; it’s not Michaela and the person is male. That leaves Wes, Connor, Asher, Frank and Nate. At this point I can’t see it being Connor, Asher or Nate. I don’t think that thus far the narrative has given reason for it to be. So right now, in my mind, the only two candidates are Wes and Frank.

Random thoughts:

  1. The school president is right; it’s not cute anymore.
  2. Damn Michaela!
  3. Asher teasing Michaela is the cutest thing.
  4. Nate was shirtless in this episode!

How to Get Away With Murder airs Thursdays at 10 PM on ABC.

Flagship Phones

0

Yes what is this ‘flagship phone’ manufacturers keep referring to? “The most expensive device brought out by a company during a given year”, is the predictable response. In fact, many in Barbados and the rest of the world may be confused by the question initially, having never heard of the term in a daily setting. Whenever Samsung releases a Galaxy S device, one glance at the price of the phone brings us to the conclusion whether or not its Samsung’s new ‘big’ phone. We must then look back on the origins of the word, to gain a greater understanding to the significance of this label in this technology driven era.

The word “flagship” is defined on the Merriam-Webster website as ‘the finest, largest, or most important one of a series, network, or chain.’ If we get more specific, the term was originally used in the navy, to point out the most important vessel, of which the commander of the fleet was based from. After seeing this, it’s not hard to imagine why the term found its way so easily into the consumer market. It provokes a sense of importance and exclusivity when trying to market a brand. It is that exclusivity that brings notable features and builds quality to the main device, while other products are left in its shadow.

Features

It is not unfathomable to say that features sell the brand for most consumers these days. Sure, a lot of Barbadians are guilty of purchasing devices that are meant to just “wuk” for a specific period of time until a better product comes along, however more often than not they look for the special features that distinguish brands from one another. It is true that the looks of a device will readily catch our eye; but it is certain, when we realize the given features are lacking, or they are “last year” features, our interest is quickly lost. That is not to say we can’t make do with ‘basic’ cellphones by today’s standards. After all, once the phone is capable of making phone calls and “whatsapping” our acquaintances, we can usually live comfortably. We, however, are not satisfied with just being comfortable. Luxury is our aim in life, and smart-phone manufacturers know this all too well.iphone_5s_touch_id_fingerprint_video_hero_4x3

The features in flagship phones are designed to appeal to our senses and belief in what we see as “trendy”. The fingerprint scanner system in current Apple phones (Touch ID), makes us feel “big up” in the niche market of a person who no longer has to use a password or swipe a pattern to unlock his or her device. A simple tap of a finger and all is accessible to us. The Galaxy S7 with its AMOLED (Active Matrix OLED) screen, makes videos and pictures pop, therefore creating a visually appealing experience for its users. Since these sought after features by consumers are not readily available with other brands, it places Apple and Samsung, respectively, in a comfortable position to drive sales. The money from sales then goes on to drive research and development (better known as R&D), and in turn R&D drives advancement in new technology and features, thus, the cycle continues.

Food for thought

It is this cycle that is important to consumers (in the end). Flagships are used to drive sales for all products produced by the given manufacturer, from the top tier to the more budget-oriented products. It is because of the existence of flagship phones however, we come to expect specific things from other brands when it comes to their top tier devices. It is worth noting, that in the year 2015, Microsoft Mobile (the phone division of Microsoft Corporation), released two flagships, to little fanfare. The Lumia 950 and the 950 XL gained little traction with consumers, why you may ask? Features and build designs were long outdated- it simply did not look or feel like flagship product of 2015. Flagships are supposed to stand out, in both looks and feel. Words like “premium” and “high-end” should always be used in the conversation when discussing such a product.lumia-950-and-950-xl-2

With that notion, not only is it up to the phone makers to tell us what is and is not a flagship device, but also the consumers who dictate when the label should be used. If we are not impressed with the phone or the features are outdated in our eyes, our interests will go elsewhere. In the end, a flagship phone is there to create the buzz, and we as consumers are there to determine how far that buzz is taken.

Lethal Weapon S01EO5 Recap

0

The Stunts in this series must be obeying the laws of cartoon physics- how on earth did they survive the fall into that pool? Your guess is as good as mine.

Lethal Weapon Season 1 Episode 5 (Spilt Milk) however shows a difference side of Riggs, a side which he begins to open up about after see how much of this case hit home with him. He saw himself in Chad Jackson- just a guy who found him on rough times. Chad was a veteran who could not find a job and took meds to help deal with his stress. What he did not know, was that thes drugs were driving him and everyone one else in his group crazy.

Riggs of course, is no stranger to being crazy, some may say that is what he is known for. In this case however, he knows that Chad cannot control himself, so he tries to protect him. He was willing to put his life on the line to protect this man he did not know- some would argue he did this because he realised he could end up like Chad if he did not change the way he is now.

Murtaugh on the other hand spent the most part of the episode trying to paint parallels between Riggs and Chad. Not so much for making a joke, more so to help him to understand Riggs a little more. Murtaugh acting on his crazy at the latter part of this episode was hilarious to see; I mean seriously, who apart from Riggs would have though jumping out of the window was the best plan they could have come up with?

Murtaugh being jealous of Trish’s new assistant was cute, Trish however handled it as expected, with grace and ease. The Murtaugh family moments are always nice to see, him playing basketball with Riana was nice to see, showed him as more than just a serious cop but a family man at heart.

The side characters had their time to shine this week- Cruz and Bailey started off on a rocky footing. She did was not fond of him at all, but by the end of the episode he started to grow on her, though I am sure he is not fully in her good books as yet.

So what did you think of these week’s episode, did you like it as much as we did? Leave your thoughts down below!

Here is the promo for next week’s episode:

The Flash S03E03 Recap

0

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

If this episode made me realise anything, it’s exactly how much Barry screwed up. The episode was basically centred around driving that home. It was pointed out at every opportunity; from the beginning when Harry showed up and scolded Barry for going back in time and changing the timeline again, until the end of the episode when Barry told Frankie that nothing that happened to her was her fault.

Damn right it’s not her fault. Barry caused all of this.

Everything this season – Alchemy (sorry, Dr. Alchemy), the new metas and the problems that they bring with them to Central City – is his fault and this is just a repeat of last season; Barry did something at the end of the previous season that introduced new, havoc-wreaking meta-humans and the season’s villain to Central City. Season one is the only season in which he has not been directly responsible for all of Central City’s meta-human problems.

He is always making the same mistakes and doing the same things. He never learns.

flash-s03e03_2If this episode made me feel anything, it was frustration toward Barry because of all of that. Really, Harry was all of us when he found out that Barry had changed the timeline…again.

Harry’s comment about having never been in the speed lab makes me wonder if Flashpoint didn’t affect Earth-Two.

Harry and Jesse’s arrival and the revelation that she now has speed powers brought Wally a bit of anguish. It’d been hinted at last week, but I suppose now there’s solid confirmation that Wally will get his speed powers from Dr. Alchemy. I wish he wasn’t so reckless and desperate about getting his powers. Like Joe said, he can still help people as a normal human being.

But if Frankie’s explanation of how she got her powers is any indication of what will happen, the more Wally has dreams about his life during Flashpoint when he was Kid Flash, the more painful his not having his powers and being Kid Flash will be for him. I suppose, then, that his behaviour makes sense as it is a reflection of said pain.

Frankie’s meta-human of the week story was meh. At least she got more development than Edward Clariss did and he was on the show for two, whole episodes. Her character wasn’t particularly interesting, nor was her story.

flast-s03e03_1I’m glad that this is not yet another season of “will they, or won’t they” between Barry and Iris, that they’re actually trying at a relationship now and that their inevitable happily ever after is not being drawn out.

Barry went way overboard with the flower heart and spelling her name with flowers thing. He doesn’t need to try to impress her. She already knows him. And of course their first date is awkward and gets interrupted by and ultimately ends early because of him needing to fulfill his duties as The Flash.

Random thoughts:

  1. Stop screwing up Barry.
  2. Barry scolded him so good that Joe didn’t need to say a thing!
  3. Barry: “How do we keep from messing things up when all we wanna do is help?” By not going back in time every time something goes wrong!
  4. Why didn’t the other Team Flash think of panic buttons?

The Flash airs Tuesdays at 8 PM on The CW.
