Iron Fist S01E05 Recap

0

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

I think I have some sort of understanding of Joy as a character and why she’s so contradictory. She does actually care about things and have a heart, she’s just good at compartmentalising her feelings and pushing down her conscience when she’s doing something that’s not exactly right or ethical, but is in the best interest of Rand Enterprises. Like with the lawsuit concerning their plant and the fifteen cases of cancer that sprung up among the residents in the area surrounding it. She knows that the right thing to do would be to help those families, but Rand isn’t legally responsible (not that that’s been proven yet), so to settle with them would be unwise. It was especially difficult for her to do what she did because of Harold and his cancer battle.

I didn’t like how the sad, cancer mother cornered Danny and set him up in order to blackmail Rand. She had a moral leg to stand on and I sympathised with her before that. I firmly sided with Ward in not settling the case, although Joy and the other members of the board had valid arguments (that I agreed with) as to why they should have. I really wanted to see what Danny would have said if he’d attended the meeting, but he was busy elsewhere.

I feel like Ward really should have consulted with Harold about the lawsuit. Harold may not be the best of persons, but his input there would have been valuable. That was not the time to act out and be defiant toward his father. The lawsuit is a great threat to Rand and even more so since the video with Danny leaked. His refusing to settle probably was an extension of his defiance.

I didn’t think anything of Ward keeping the heroin in his desk after his “meeting” with Danny, besides it maybe being found in his desk and him getting into trouble for that. I wouldn’t have thought that he had a substance abuse problem. He does drink a lot of bourbon, though.

Following up on the package that had been sent to him by the triad in the last episode, Danny tries to find proof that The Hand is using Rand Enterprises to smuggle heroin when Ward doesn’t believe him. Danny is now actively pursuing The Hand, trying to get them out of Rand and defeating them on the whole.

For his first outing as a vigilante/(super)hero, I thought that Danny did pretty well. Taking along Colleen as back up instead of going alone was a good move. It was smart of him to take a phone and record what was going on with the shipment at the pier. I thought that he’d take a photo and set off the flash, though, since he’s new to smart phone technology.

Like, Colleen, I was skeptical of Danny’s assertion that the shipment was the heroin that The Hand was smuggling. Once he found the chemist, Randovan, it made sense why they had shipped so much equipment and not the heroin itself.

When Claire showed up in the episode, I expected either Colleen or Danny to get hurt; there’s not need for Night Nurse in an episode unless someone gets gravely injured. Instead, it was Randovan that she had to tend to. I held my breath thinking that she may just suggest calling up one of her other superhero friends, to help Danny take on The Hand, when she told him that he couldn’t do it alone. I knew that wouldn’t happen, because this isn’t The Defenders, but still.

Unfortunately, The Hand knows that the Iron Fist is in New York and in pursuit of them. Danny no longer has the element of surprise. Now they’re going to go after him. I don’t believe that what they want with Rand is as simple as just drug smuggling. It has to be a part of whatever their plan for Elektra/Black Sky is.

Random thoughts:

  1. They have a heroin addict on hand to test new drugs?
  2. Claire!
  3. Ward flipping off Harold in his office was hilarious.
  4. Too bad Danny doesn’t know that Claire can help with this…
  5. They bought the pier to smuggle drugs?
  6. Is this nunchaku display supposed to be impressive?
  7. Does Danny have a driver’s licence now?
  8. Is Claire going to be the one to bring together The Defenders?

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

Danny didn’t know that The Hand is real and active, so that explains why, up until now, he hasn’t been concerned about them. Luckily – and not so luckily – for him, they’ve infiltrated Rand Enterprises; the very corporation he owns and has been struggling to take his place in since he returned to New York.

Because Harold needs Danny in order to get out from under The Hand, he gave him Rand Enterprises and everything that goes along with it. Through this exchange, we learned the nature of Harold’s relationship with The Hand; they cured his cancer (by killing him and bringing him back to life) and now he’s indebted to them.

I was not expecting that to be the kind of arrangement he had with them and the conditions under which the arrangement came to be. I thought that the cancer was a lie and just a cover story. I’m not sure anymore if Harold cares about Danny being in control of Rand Enterprises or not. I fully expect, though, that once Danny has outlived his usefulness, he’ll have him killed. After all, the Meachums very much didn’t want him anywhere near Rand. I think he gave it to Danny in order to buy his help getting rid of The Hand.

His affections toward Danny were part of that as well and I believe Ward when he said that the only person Harold cares about is himself. Danny should heed his warning (but I know that he won’t), although, I do think that Ward said that out of jealousy. It’s been clear that he and his father have a contentious relationship and that he favours Joy. I’m sure that seeing Harold be so affectionate with Danny, who is not his son, rubbed Ward the wrong way even if he knows that it was a lie.

Harold’s bias toward Joy was demonstrated when he went to the triad and killed the gang member whom had hit her. Not only that, I’m sure that asking for that favour from The Hand made him more indebted to them. He never would have done that if it had been Ward.

Danny also had a few words with the triad and it seems that they too would like to see him get rid of The Hand. I thought that Rand’s acquiring of the pier was just some one off business deal, part of the everyday acquisitions of Rand, but it seems to be of great importance. And now that Danny’s fight for Rand Enterprises is settled, he can concentrate on fulfilling his duty as the Iron Fist.

Except that he’s getting involved in the running of Rand Enterprises. I’m with him on selling the cure at cost, but I feel like before he starts taking part in the running of Rand he should learn something about business and the inner workings of Rand itself. If he wants to preserve the corporation and keep to his father’s vision, sinking it when he doesn’t know what he’s doing is not the way to go.

I’m starting to think that Colleen’s fighting is not so much in service of the dojo anymore. That’s part of it and what motivated her to do it in the first place, but I think that she really likes the thrill of it. I thought that her student was out of place for posting the video online without asking her first, but he may be onto something about it attracting more students.

Random thoughts:

  1. So Danny ended up in Harold’s hands anyway.
  2. Danny: “You died.” So did you.
  3. Harold: “It’s not every day that somebody comes back from the dead.” So did you.
  4. Ward does not approve.
  5. So Joy did give Jeri the bowl.
  6. Did he just call Jeri “J Money?”
  7. Are all of Colleen’s fights going to end with her repeatedly punching someone in the face?
  8. Jeri told you to ease into things, Danny.

Featurette with Victor White

Victor White is a second generation Barbadian living in Sweden and a competitive freeskiier. This past weekend, he made history as the first Barbadian to compete in the World Ski Championships and is perhaps the first Barbadian to compete in any international winter sports competition. He took a few moments from his hectic schedule as a competitive athlete, to speak to Zeitgeist about his life and career as a freeskiier.

In your “Support Barbados in the World Ski Championships” video, I noticed that you don’t have a Barbadian accent. May I ask where you reside currently?

Victor White: Yes, that’s true. I [was] born and mostly raised in Sweden. My dad moved to Sweden from Barbados when he was in his twenties, he then met my mom after a couple of years. I have my base in Sweden during the winter and [in] Barbados in the summer.

What is freeskiing exactly? How is it different from regular skiing?

VW: Well, in regular skiing you basically ski down the slopes of the mountain. Then you have the alpine skiing, in which you can compete, where you ski [through] gates; which probably comes to most [people’s] minds when talking about skiing. Freeskiing, which is my discipline, we ski in terrain parks. [There are] [b]ig jumps built from snow and [we] slide on rails of metal. It is called free skiing as it is very free in the sense that when we are competing we have a course with a lot of different options with basically no rules on how you ski it.

Photography by Kristoffer Pettersson.

How did you get into freeskiing?

VW: I started with alpine skiing around the time [that] I learned to walk. My mom got me [into] it since all of the family on her side does it. Then when I got older I got bored of skiing gates. I admired the cool guys jumping on the kickers doing tricks. So I decided to go for that instead. Since that day I have not looked back, only kept moving forward trying to reach my goals!

So you’ve been skiing all of your life pretty much.

VW: Yes, exactly!

How old are you?

VW: I turned 20 in February.

Can you explain the hashtag “#BarbadosFreeSki”? When I saw the words “Barbados” and “ski” together I was a little confused and I imagine other people may have been as well. Did you think about that when you created the hashtag?

VW: Well, yes. That is the point of it. Of course people are going to get a little bit confused, since there is no snow on the island. I created the hashtag with a sense that it will stand out and stand proud! Hopefully that confusion turns into curiosity and people look further into it!

It made me curious so I’d say you achieved your goal.

VW: Hehe, good!!

For those of us who don’t know, what is the World Ski Championships and have you competed in any other international ski competitions?

VW: The World Ski Championships is, as the name states, “The World Skiing Championships.” It is the third biggest competition in the ski community after the [X-Games] and the Olympics. The Championships [run] every two years, just like any other world championships. As for other international competitions I have been pretty much all over the world, from China to New Zealand!

Did you represent Barbados in those other international competitions?

VW: Always Barbados. Barbados is actually well known in the skiing community now, believe it or not. Hehe!

And we have you to thank!

VW: Haha, I guess so!

As someone from two countries, why did you choose to represent Barbados over Sweden?

VW: Well, my father, Calver, always wanted me to represent Barbados. We started the process together. Unfortunately he passed away [from] cancer 2.5 years ago. I am honouring him by competing for Barbados, fulfilling our goal. I am also very proud to be a 2nd generation Barbadian, I want to put Barbados on the map in the [winter sport] community!

My condolences. Sorry to hear that.

VW: Such is life. I have his love forever in my heart [though]!

How does it feel to be the first Barbadian to compete in winter sports as a free skiier? Was it always your goal to be the first?

VW: I would not say that the fact [that] I am doing this as a Barbadian feels special. What is special is the support and the love from all [of] my friends, family and fellow Barbadians on the [i]sland. It is something special, that I feel is unique, having my country standing behind me to 100%. Well, my goal has never been to be the first Barbadian in a winter sport. My goal is to be the first Barbadian to take an [Olympic] gold medal, since we only have a bronze from Obadele Thompson.

Speaking of the Olympics, how is your campaign to attrach sponsorship for next year’s Winter Olympics going?

VW: Unfortunately I have not received any emails yet. This stuff usually takes a lot of work and commitment. I have to keep on trying!

https://www.facebook.com/victorwhit3/videos/785373074946910/

Would you like to see more Barbadians – and Caribbean people in general – competing in winter sports? What do you think is the feasibility of that and what can be done to encourage it?

VW: Yes of course! Hopefully I can reach out to the large crowds. I know [that] there are a lot of 2nd generation Barbadians in Canada for example. I have no doubt [that] we have a good winter sports athlete among them! I try to encourage physical activity in general, and I know for example [that] there is an ice rink in Barbados. We have to work with what we have got, it would not surprise me if we see a Barbadian figure skater in a few years! Many of the UK skiers grew up skiing on plastic, so anything is possible!

How is the World Ski Championships going for you so far?

VW: Not so good. In slopestyle, my discipline, where we in this case ski [through] a course with 4 jumps and 2 rail features, [w]e do a qualification where you have 2 runs, the best one counts. Unfortunately we had some weather difficulties decreasing our practice time in the course, we also had to push the qualifiers from Friday to Saturday, then semi-finals on Sunday. I did not make my run in the semifinals ending 43rd in total. I am very disappointed [in] [myself], but at the same time I am happy I did not hurt [myself] too much as the course was very icy due to the harsh weather conditions early in the morning. My sport is a “high-risk” sport. Which means we always have to determine risk vs. reward. Some of the top guys pulled out due to the risk factor.

43rd out of how many competitors?

VW: 43rd out of 56.

Okay. Last question: What is your favourite Bajan dish?

VW: Pig tail with sauce. Omitas sauce, that is the best for sure!

Once Upon A Time S06E13 Recap

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

Every now and then this show manages to make Rumpelstiltskin sympathetic. I love him when he’s at his best and I despise him when he’s at his worst. He is usually at his best when he is trying to fulfill his duty as a father and in this week’s episode we got to see him in the past and the present with both his sons; Gideon and Bae.

I like that Rumple actually tried to talk Gideon out of killing Emma. It wasn’t out of the goodness of his heart or because he cared about her, he just didn’t want his son to blacken his heart. Given that Rumple can speak from experience about how it’s incredibly difficult to turn from darkness once you’ve chosen that path (the man tried and failed so many times), you’d think that Gideon would listen to him. He’s so hellbent on killing Emma, however, that Rumples warnings fell on deaf ears.

Emma isn’t to be the only one of Gideon’s victims in his pursuit of Saviourdom; he went after the Blue Fairy to steal her magic and repair the sword that is to be used to kill Emma. Realising that he can’t stop Gideon from executing his plan, Rumple decided to steal the Blue Fairy’s magic for him so that he doesn’t have to commit an evil deed. Which is all fine and good, but Gideon is still an active participant in and the facilitator of any evil deeds Rumple executes on his behalf. That doesn’t exactly exempt him from not doing evil. He still is. I guess in Once Upon A Time  having  others commit evil for you won’t blacken your heart but doing it yourself will.

Back in the Enchanted Forest after the First Ogre Wars, Rumple tried to give up using dark magic for Bae. He did well with it too and Bae was very good at motivating him and convincing him that he could be a hero without it. Rumple even entrusted him with his dagger when they went to defeat Grendel. But Beowulf, because of jealousy or fear or hatred or all three, kidnapped and killed some of the towns people in order to lure Rumple into a trap and frame him for their deaths, berating and thus angering Bae when they try to stop him.

I felt for Rumple when Bae compelled him to kill Beowulf. The moment that motivated Bae to do that didn’t feel like enough of a reason for him to have reacted so strongly, but the reaction from Rumple was a little saddening. I expected that Bae would realise the gravity of what he’d asked his father to do and felt guilty following that. It seems, though, that using the dagger to control the Dark One makes the wielder susceptible to the lures of darkness, because Bae was 100% on board with Rumple continuing to use dark magic after that.

I felt for Rumple again when he gave Bae the memory potion and Bae went from being on his side, to immediately hating him because he killed Beowulf. Rumple accepted being hated by his son in order to save him from darkness.

The good news about Robin 2.0 is that he didn’t want Regina’s potions for some nefarious reason and isn’t actually a bad guy. The bad news is that he wanted to use it to break the protection spell on Storybrooke and run away from Regina, with the help of Zelena. This episode killed my dreams of an Outlaw Queen rekindling. Especially since Robin is supposed to be her true love. I so want Regina to get her happy ending and it seems to be drifting further and further away from her. It had to hurt her when he said that he wanted to get away from her because her comparing him to Robin 1.0 wasn’t enabling him to start over.

For a moment I considered the possibility that he and Zelena may become a thing. Given the history between Regina, Robin 1.0 and Zelena that would be so unfair to Regina. Even worst than that would be Robin 2.0 and The Evil Queen. I do not want that to happen, but it looked like The Evil Queen was starting to cozy up to him a little, although, she does have a flirtatiousness about her naturally so I may be reading too much into it. The two of them seem to be well suited at least a little bit; he’s a total scoundrel and she’s, well, The Evil Queen. And her being Regina would mean she still ended up with her true love if that happens. I hope that I’m wrong about this.

If only Emma hadn’t said anything before Hook could get his confession out, he wouldn’t still have his secret weighing him down. The second she said yes he should have continued with his speech and told her about David’s father. She’ll take it hard, of course, but she’ll appreciate his honesty and be able to move past it. I do not at all like that they have a secret between them and want Hook to just tell her already so it isn’t a thing anymore. This drama is so unnecessary.

Random thoughts:

  1. The CGI on these ogres is so bad.
  2. Yea…we know Rumple didn’t keep that promise.
  3. Do not untie Gideon, Rumple.
  4. Gideon lived in a cell?!
  5. Has Hook been drinking all day?
  6. Why are you wearing shoes in the house, Emma? And boots at that.

Once Upon a Time airs Sundays at 8 PM on ABC.

Iron Fist S01E03 Recap

0

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

Going to Jeri Hogarth was the smartest thing thing that Danny has done so far. Lawyering up is the way to go and the best way to deal with Ward and Joy, who’ve been such dicks to Danny so far. Ward, I understand, but Joy is just confusing.

When she got back the M&M’s she seemed to be genuinely happy that Danny was alive and she’d had her friend back. She said she felt bad about drugging him and even that he hasn’t done anything to make her hate him. Sometimes it looks like she actually cares about him. Then she followed up her heart to heart with him about her father’s death with documents for him to sign essentially buying him off to silence him and she tells him that she and Ward don’t want him around. She’s apparently sincere in all of these instances but they’re so contradictory that I just can’t pin her down. Does she care about him or does she care about his money?

I understand that, as she said, she and her brother worked hard to get to where they are and that letting go of everything they’ve built will be difficult. But the lengths that they have gone to to keep him away from what belongs to him have been so devious and nasty. Ward got rid of every single document that proves that Danny exists. Joy didn’t know about it, but when she found out she didn’t even admonish him or anything. She was cool with it. I truly do not understand her, she is the most frustrating character in the show and I dislike her the most because she looks to be a decent person but then she does some very shady things.

Like bribing Patel with a liver for his sick nephew so that they could buy his pier. She stole an organ. The deed was vaguely altruistic, but the fact remains that that was very unethical and underhanded. That is something that I would have expected from Ward, not from her. I gave her the benefit of the doubt in the last episode, but until she proves otherwise she’s just as bad, if not worse, than Ward. He doesn’t seem to care about anything, but she does.

I cant even decide whether or not I think she gave Danny and Hogarth the clay bowl to strengthen their case. Why would she do something to help them when she has been pushing so hard to get Danny out of the way? At the same time, she seems to care about him so why wouldn’t she?

Danny’s attempts to reclaim Rand Enterprises and everything that goes along with it is important, but it feels a little inconsequential considering that he’s the Iron Fist and his duty is to defeat The Hand. Which I assume is why he came back in the first place, not to get tied up in a legal battle with the Meachums. I like to compare it to Game of Thrones (which is appropriate because Finn Jones was on that series as Loras Tyrell); the fight for the Iron Throne is important and I care about who wins, but winter has come and the White Walkers with it and that is by far of higher importance. Danny can care about both and I’m sure he does. Right now though, he should be concentrating on The Hand since, unlike those concerned with the Iron Throne, he knows what the real threat is.

The question is whether or not The Hand knows that he’s the Iron Fist. They know that Danny Rand is back because they paid Harold a visit and punished him for leaving his tower, but do they know that Danny is the Iron Fist? Do they even know what the Iron Fist is and what that means for them? I’m going to lean toward “no” on the first question since they didn’t press Harold about Danny. I’m honestly impressed that they didn’t know why he left. Either that or they just wanted him to tell them himself; test him and see if he would lie. He did lie but, they don’t know that.

Colleen is starting to grow on me. I like her no nonsense attitude. I was happy to finally see her spar with Danny. Unfortunately, like most of the fight scenes in this series, it was incredibly sluggish. Her fight in the beginning when Ward’s goons broke in was a little better, but that felt slow to me as well. I don’t know why Ward thought that someone who ran a dojo wouldn’t be able to take care of themselves. She took those guys down easily. Perhaps the best fight so far was her cage fight. It still looked like they were moving through molasses, but it had a little more energy.

Random thoughts:

  1. You’re gonna turn Ward into a super villain, Harold.
  2. Why are the flowers on the grave fresh?
  3. She told you not to interfere with her students, Danny.
  4. He can’t tell you because he doesn’t know, Joy.
  5. Dang Joy, that was harsh.

10 Things About Shelway Gaskin

0

A new feature is on it’s way this Sunday!

Later this week, meet Shelway Gaskin – 2D Animator and Illustrator and creator of the comic series Shootin’ the Breeze! But while you wait, here are 10 Things About Shelway Gaskin:

  1. Shelway is a 22-year-old 2D animator and illustrator studying Film at the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination.
  2. It was the Pixar movie, The Incredibles, that inspired him to pursue animation as a serious career path.
  3. Shelway is a self-taught animator who started out on Microsoft Paint and worked his way up to where he is today.
  4. Whether its animation, live-action, fiction or non-fiction, this young artist loves pop culture and enjoys doing research on even the most random of topics.
  5. “I’m a filmaholic; I love film…I’m always on YouTube and if it’s not YouTube, its Vimeo.” Shelway said.
  6. He has a bit of an unusual accent since he was born in America, lived in Bermuda until he was eight and then moved to Barbados. His parents, brother and majority of his family members however, are all Barbadian.
  7. “The internet has ruined my attention span.” he said laughing. Boredom is something that comes knocking at his door frequently, so finding things to grab his attention is an ongoing activity.
  8. Persons often think that he’s super serious first glance, but he says “I may look serious but I am thinking stupidness in my mind”. Don’t let the serious look scare you from a conversation with this random guy!
  9. Shelway says he’s a perfectionist, especially when it comes to his animation, and it drives him to the point that makes him paranoid.
  10. His overall aim in life is to be comfortable…not worrying about a job or money. Just comfortable and content with life.

Girls S06E06 Recap

0

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

Marnie was even more of a pain this week. The selfishness, selfcentredness, arrogance, vanity and narcissism of that girl is beyond measure. I realise that a lot of those words mean the same thing, but with Marnie, it’s so bad it needs emphasising.

At the very beginning of the episode we had to deal with Marnie’s ego when she assumed that her break up with Ray qualified as topping Hannah’s news when she didn’t even know what Hannah’s news was (and applause to Hannah for calling out Marnie on how terrible she was to Ray). She went on to say that Ray should have been pleased she even wanted to talk to him, then she delivered and insincere apology for “topping” Hannah’s news and asked her “What’d you got?” Like it was some sort of competition as to who had the bigger news. Knowing Marnie, it probably was. She did show a glimmer of humanity, though, when she insisted that it was wrong of Hannah not to inform Paul-Louis that she’s pregnant.

That was the only time Marnie expressed any kind of care for another person. The next person upon whom she inflicted her selfishness was Desi. She doesn’t care at all about his addiction and his recovery. He was right when he said she exploits him. He was clearly not well and in a bad place and all she could do was hound up about playing a gig. She never once asked him how he was. Marnie pushed him so hard that he relapsed and got high. The two of them need to end their business relationship. He will never get better if he’s around her.

I felt a bit of schadenfreude at the fact that her performance with her mother went horribly, just as I expected it would. It started off very well, surprisingly so; she and her mother played beautifully together. But then it devolved into a disaster and for a brief moment, Marnie suffered.

Marnie wasn’t the only one to find out about the baby news this week; Hannah finally told Adam in a fit of anger when he followed her down the street, begging her to watch the film he made about them. I wish she had more of a moment with him in which we could really get his reaction. I really wanted to see how he would take it and he was, understandably, shocked (he echoed Marnie’s sentiments about Hannah not telling Paul-Louis). It seems the writers cared more about Jessa’s reception of the news, however.

Jessa apparently doesn’t understand that she and Hannah aren’t friends anymore and I don’t know why she would think they still were. It’s strange that she would think that she would have been informed of the baby news and is surprised that Hannah could so easily – to borrow Jessa’s own words – detach herself from their relationship. How does she not understand that Hannah doesn’t want anything to do with her? And why does she at all think that she has the right to feel upset about how Hannah is treating her? Does she not realise that she’s the one who ruined their friendship? Hannah’s behaviour toward her is because of what she did to her. She has to understand that.

Thankfully, Hannah’s friendship with Elijah has not gone the way of the dodo and the two of them managed to make up. He is fully on board with her keeping the baby and is ready to help her raise it. I love their friendship, so seeing them bury the hatchet – and there wasn’t even much of a hatchet to bury – was nice.

Now that Hannah’s changed her mind about now telling Paul-Louis, I hope that the fact that she couldn’t reach him the first time she called doesn’t dissuade her from doing it. It really is the fair thing to do by letting him know. As her father said, though, it’s her choice whether or not she tells him, depending on what she thinks is best for the baby. We’ll see if she actually tells him and if he steps up as a father.

Random thoughts:

  1. Still weird that Hannah is having a baby.
  2. Adam completed the film already?
  3. Hannah literally ran away from Adam.
  4. Elijah is a really good actor.
  5. Jessa: “Can I come in?” No.
  6. At least Desi encouraged you in your performance, Marnie. That’s more than you would ever do for him.

Girls airs Sundays at 10 PM on HBO.

Iron Fist S01E02 Recap

0

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

This series continues to go in a direction that I didn’t expect. And honestly, I enjoyed this second episode a lot more than I did the first; whereas the first was bland and left me not feeling much of anything toward the story or its characters, I came out of this episode excited for more and actively engaged in Harold’s story – and by extension Danny’s – and Ward’s.

Danny is the main character, but I still don’t really care about him yet except for wanting him to definitively prove that he’s Danny. Which he did do in this episode (both Joy and Harold believe him now, as well as his psychiatrist), so there isn’t much for me to care about concerning him right now – besides seeing how his story ties into Harold’s.

The unexpected reversal in this episode, for me, was that Harold actually wants Danny alive. I thought that Harold may have been working for or with The Hand. However, the message they left on his window  was clearly a threat. Now I think that The Hand is responsible for him faking his death and essentially imprisoning himself. Danny, because he is the Iron Fist – the only person who can defeat The Hand – is his means of escaping.

That’s the only reason he doesn’t want him dead. I’m sure if Danny was just Danny that Harold would have had him killed. He’s still a threat to the Meachums as Danny because he can take away the power and position they have as the persons running Rand Enterprises. That’s why Harold wants to lock him away but keep him close enough that he can be of use to him. He still can’t have him going public with his identity.

Maybe that’s why Ward was being such an ass and questioning his father about keeping Danny safe? His response to his father confirming that he is in fact Danny and asking him to be moved to a safe house confused me. I know he never really liked Danny, but his immediately jumping to the conclusion that his father wanted to have him killed and the fact that he was so cool about it was surprising to me. Like him or not, Danny was someone he grew up with so I would think he’d care. Plus, he seemed so much more upset about the fact that his father doesn’t want Danny killed. Like a child whining because he couldn’t get his way.

Perhaps that’s what it is; he wants Danny dead – very much so – and threw a small tantrum because that wasn’t happening. His reaction brought me back to my original idea that he will be the big bad this season. He can’t have his way because he has to obey and answer to his father. I suspect that sooner rather than later, he will go to The Hand (I’m pretty sure that if Harold is under threat from The Hand that Ward knows about it) and tell them what his father is up to and have them kill him so that he can be free to do as he pleases; namely and particularly kill Danny so that he can stay in control of Rand Enterprises.

Joy, I’m a little less skeptical about than I was at the end of the last episode. She did express some guilt for having poisoned Danny, she seemed to be elated to discover that it was really him and bothered by Ward’s continued refusal to acknowledge his return despite the evidence. She did what I wanted her to when she sent Danny the M&M’s; she listened to her gut and stopped allowing Ward to sway her otherwise.

I liked that Colleen refused to help Danny at first, instead of doing the typical thing of a character who barely interacted with the main character for ten minutes rushing to their aid. She and Danny barely had any kind of meaningful interaction, so her desire to help him there would have been unjustified. As far as she’d known based on her encounters with him, he was just some crazy homeless dude and being in a mental hospital was exactly what he needed. It made more sense that Ward’s hard push to bribe her would make her curious enough to speak to Danny.

Random thoughts:

  1. This nurse totally works for Ward.
  2. What “real world” is Colleen preparing her students for?
  3. “I get stressed.” That’s an understatement.
  4. Colleen folds her arms weird.
  5. You’re going to turn Kai into a super villain, Harold.
  6. How did those M&M’s not spill if they were already open?
  7. Telling him about K’un Lun will not convince him of your sanity, Danny.
  8. Yes! His fist went all glowy!

Grimm S06E11 Recap

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

Things are ramping up just as Grimm is getting ready to wind down. We’re in the home stretch and there are only two more episodes before the series ends.

Eve successfully made it to “the other place”, an alternate dimension ruled by wessen who do not woge. Nick joins her shortly thereafter when Monroe and Rosalee return home and find evidence of her departure. I was expecting “the other place” to look like the swirling, black chaos in the mirror, but I suppose that’s just what the portal looks like. I’m a bit confused, though, because now I’m wondering if this is where Eve would have ended up had she not survived the death grip. The environment there looked the same as the portal to “the other place.”

When Eve came upon the first set of wessen chasing down the man I thought that she would help him, not stand there and watch them kill him. Considering how wild “the other place” is, I guess it was best that she didn’t. Nick  wasn’t nearly as cautious, though,  and stepped right into the clearing to face one of the blutbaden. A wessen that didn’t seem to recognise that he was a grimm. It was woged so it should have seen the blackness in his eyes. I guess that in a world ruled by wessen, grimms don’t exist.

I was a little creeped out when the people from the village they stumbled upon dragged away the blutbaden bodies. I assumed that they were dragging them away to skin them and use their pelts as clothing. I never would have thought that they eat the wessen, especially when the wessen eat them. In “the other place” it looks like everyone eats everyone else. Nick must have a pretty strong stomach that he managed not to gag when they fed him spit-roasted blutbad.

I was very happy that Nick and Eve got their heart to heart, in the same way that she had with Adalind. It was about time that it happened. There was no real closure in their relationship. It never occurred to me that Nick felt guilty about everything that happened to Juliette and Eve and blamed himself for it. Besides Nick, she is probably the one character who has been through the most.

Nick and Eve finally came face to face with the skull man that had been stalking Eve through the mirror; the Zerstörer. For a monster with a skeletal face, it’s quite muscular. I knew that a gun wouldn’t have worked against it, but it was worth a try. Without any weapon I’m not sure how Nick can contribute to it’s defeat. At least Eve has her hexenbiest powers.

As it would so happen, Eve isn’t the one that the Zerstörer was after; it was Diana. Filling in the gaps of what Renard knew concerning everything that was happening proved to be fruitful. Team Grimm maybe should have brought him up to speed a long time ago – this all involves his daughter, after all – but again, it’s Renard. He can hardly be trusted. Dasha was able to tell them how it was that Diana was connected to all of this. She is the to be the child bride of the Zerstörer and bear him one hundred children.

I did not at all see that coming. I don’t think anyone would have. She’s a child. In all honesty, I don’t see what the point of all of her power is if her only role in this is as a breeder. I’m curious as to why the Zerstörer went after Eve if it’s Diana that he wants. It could want them for separate reasons, I suppose, but ultimately use them both in order to reach the same goal. Eve definitely has a part to play in all of this; she did carve symbols into the walls of the tunnels.

The one thing that we still haven’t gotten any answers about is the magic stick. How it fits into everything is still unclear. I have no ideas about what it’s inability to go to “the other place” could mean, but I’m thinking that it’s perhaps a weapon that can be used against the Zerstörer. Maybe not kill it, but harm it in some way. It’s pretty useless right now, though, because it’s on the other side of the mirror.

We’ll have all of our answers to all of our questions soon enough.

Random thoughts:

  1. Diana knows all.
  2. Is Diana afraid of anything?
  3. You have a limited amount of bullets, Nick.

Grimm airs Fridays at 10 PM on NBC.
