Reign S04E05 Recap

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

Darnley isn’t as much of a snake as I thought he was. In fact, he isn’t a snake at all. After his conversation with Lady Lennox at the pub, I don’t see him as the nefarious person I did before. All he wants is the love of the Scottish people (perhaps to replace the love of Keira). He’s just wasn’t willing to do so honourably. With Mary’s guiding influence however, it looks like he may change his ways somewhat. After all, he did agree not to cheat during the boxing match and held to that – Mary breaking that agreement herself notwithstanding.

I never believed that he had tried to poison Lord Taylor for the simple fact that he’s so upfront and honest. He admitted to setting the fire in the village without hesitation. If he had indeed poisoned Lord Taylor, he’d have owned up to it when Mary accused him. I believed in his innocence before she asked, in fact. Another thing about him that is very obvious is his desire to win Mary’s approval. That being the case, he would not have broken his promise to her.

And win her approval he did. I thought they were a good match when they first met; they had amazing chemistry and she did greatly enjoy his company and like him. It seems that they will get to the easy camaraderie they had before. Even if she doesn’t come to love him as much as or in the same way that she did Francis, I think she’ll be able to at least appreciate him and love him in some way.

Another relationship that’s going well is the one between Emily Knox and James. I was so relieved when Mary told him that he no longer needed to seduce Emily. As I said before, I didn’t feel comfortable with them using her when she’s so innocent and vulnerable. But just as James quit her she came running back into his arms. I didn’t think James would sleep with her and expected him to turn her away. I guess he figured that since she gave herself willingly, he might as well get some information out of her? Either that or he’s developing genuine feelings for her as I suspected he would, but something about his demeanour when she came to him makes me think otherwise.

Things weren’t going quite so well for Greer. She found out that the reason Castleroy has been so distant is because he fell in love with someone else. I was hoping that the two of them would be a thing again because I always loved their relationship. Greer, being the very generous and kind woman that she is, didn’t even hesitate to free him of their marriage so that he could be with the one he loves. I admired her so much in that moment and I know that she’ll be fine. Poor Greer is always getting the short end of the stick in her love life and she can’t even be with the love of her life; Leith.

He himself is having some relationship troubles now that Claude is married and her plans to have an annulment won’t come to fruition. I never expected that they would, to be honest. Predictably, Narcisse was never going to allow Luc to leave such an advantageous union. I was a little surprised at his confession that he did all of this to afford his son and his descendants security through power. I forgot that sometimes Narcisse can and does act in the interest of someone other than himself, although, he does ensure he gets a little something out of it as well.

I love Luc. I feel so sorry for him; being used by Narcisse (even though it’s for his own benefit) and being stuck in a marriage with someone who loves another. He’s so considerate of Claude and what she wants and actively tries to give her that. I knew that Leith was never going to go for the open marriage. He’s back in a similar situation to what happened with him and Greer, except that Claude is here being made available to him despite her marriage when that was never an option with Greer. He too seems to always get the short end of the stick when it comes to his love life. If only Greer were still in France, free and available. Maybe we’d have a chance at that particular ship again.

Charles is neither sick nor going mad, he’s just traumatised. Arguably he’s gone a little mad, but we know the cause of said “madness.” Catherine had said in a previous episode that his experience with the Red Knights and watching his friend be burned alive was the cause for his behaviour, but for some reason I didn’t buy that. She’s trying so hard to be there for him and help him, but I don’t think that she can.

Her plan to turn public opinion about him was a bust and with Leeza hovering around (I’m so thankful that she wasn’t in this episode), it’s only a matter of time before she takes over leadership of France. I don’t know how Catherine can help him as her King or as his mother at this point. I fear that may be too far gone.

Random thoughts:

  1. Really Narcisse? Have you heard of knocking?
  2. Well, that engagement announcement didn’t go well.
  3. Darnley: “More importantly I know how to put on a show and win people to my side.” That we know.
  4. That servant ain’t buying it Greer.
  5. Darnley is just itching to hit James.
  6. Greer the Wise.
  7. Remember when Castleroy was so taken with Greer? I member.

Iron Fist S01E01 Recap

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD

I haven’t seen more of the season yet and I will need to in order to make a solid determination, but this first episode has been no indication that the series is the terrible pile of garbage that people have been saying that it is. Sure, it’s only one episode and it may well go downhill from here, but at this point it’s not bad. It’s not great either, but reports of it’s awfulness have been grossly exaggerated.

There were several moments in the first half of the episode in which the dialogue, Danny’s especially, felt a little unnatural and his personality took a while to get used to. He didn’t feel like a real person; he was just a little too upbeat and came of like he didn’t take his return seriously. Like just strolling into Rand Enterprises and expecting the receptionist to take him at his word that he was Danny Rand. He was gone for fifteen years, yes, but it didn’t seem like his psychological growth was stunted and he thought like a ten year old.

I also felt like he wasn’t doing enough to convince Joy and Ward of who he was. He didn’t really make any attempts to even just simply tell them something that only he would know. Beyond doing that, I honestly have no idea what more he could have done. He did do that later on in the episode, but Ward outright denied what he said even though for a moment it looked like he believed him. Up until his meeting with his father he was still denying that Danny was Danny.

It felt like Joy and Ward were being far too stubborn in their beliefthat Danny couldn’t be who he said it was. To the point that it seemed like they were doing it deliberately. They were protesting too much for their disbelief to come off as genuine. As if regardless of if he were Danny, they were saying that he was not because they wanted to keep their hands on his parents’ company.

Which looks to be the case considering the fact that Harold – who is supposed to be dead – called it his company and that Joy drugged Danny in a joint plot with her brother and, it looks like, had him committed to a mental hospital. I was so disappointed when she drugged him because I thought that she was the nice one between her and Ward. It may just turn out that Ward is the better of the two since he, at least, doesn’t hide his dickishness behind a facade of niceties.

I thought that Ward would be the big bad of the season, just based on his aforementioned dickishness, but then Harold showed up and he got demoted to a second tier villain. If Joy is, in fact, worse than him then he will be further demoted to third tier. I look forward to finding out why it is that Harold faked his own death. There has to be more to it than simply wanting to take over Rand Enterprises; he doesn’t need to be dead for that. There has to be a greater reason.

Big Al was another character that didn’t feel like a real person to me. He was too nice and too helpful. It wasn’t that, per se, that didn’t make him feel real, it was the way in which that was presented. I didn’t mind him by the second time he appeared in the episode and I didn’t care when he died. In all fairness I don’t care about any of the characters yet – if I ever will. None of them are particularly interesting to me. They’re all of them just bland and that is the perfect word to describe this episode.

It wasn’t boring and I didn’t hate it and I didn’t think it was bad. It was just bland. I will say that the ending piqued my interest, just because I didn’t expect the whole mental hospital bit. I do not remember the trailer at all, so I don’t know if that was in it or not.

So far, not so bad.

Random thoughts:

  1. This opening is so underwhelming.
  2. Of course it’s new, Danny. You’ve been “gone a long time.”
  3. It’s that one girl from 90201.
  4. Is it just me or does he sound like Leonardo DiCaprio?
  5. They took his family’s business and their house too?
  6. No, it does not make sense that this is corporate sabotage because it’d be too much trouble.
  7. How does she even know those shoes will fit?
  8. Harold asking the real questions.

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

This episode changed and reframed everything that has happened in the season so far. I think that the last time that I felt any kind of sympathy toward Papa Pope was when we met Liv’s mother. Someone actually managed to hurt Eli and put him on a leash. Eli Pope. Under the thumb of someone else. Controlled by someone else. That…is quite the feat.

We finally learned the circumstances leading up to and surrounding Frankie Vargas’ assassination and that it was Eli who had killed him. Not just laid out the scheme; he was the one who shot him. At the end of the last episode, I thought that Eli simply knew who had done it but wasn’t actively involved. Turns out that the people behind the assassination blackmailed Eli into killing Frankie by threatening his new girlfriend, Sandra.

Eli’s romance with Sandra was all well and good and he seemed to truly be happy and enjoying life. I forgot that he was the curator of the Smithsonian. His excitement over the dinosaur fossils and Sandra’s discoveries was infectious. It was a whole other side of Eli that I think we never really saw before. I applauded him for how smooth he was with the Marvin Gaye.

I thought that he’d gone for it as an excuse to search Liv’s apartment for bugs – which he did – and to cover whatever conversation he was going to have with Sandra. Then he presented her with wine and I thought it was just some innocent courting he was getting into…until he shoved a gun in her face. I didn’t expect for her to be aware of who those people were and complicit in trying to entrap Eli. I didn’t expect her to stick around and continue with their relationship either.

I was very impressed by her refusal to flee the country; to let these people rule her life and force her to live it in fear. That was admirable. I could see why Eli loved her; she was a very strong woman. Then he killed her. Which I knew he was going to do because she would continually be used as a tool to manipulate him, but I was still taken aback when he did it. There was no hesitation at all. As we knew, though, they still had Liv to use against him so killing Sandra was ultimately useless.

There is still the question of why these people want Mellie as president. That was one thing that this episode did not reveal.

I didn’t recognise “Nelson” when he first appeared and didn’t realise that it was him until he said the name on his fake documents. I knew that all of the evidence against him had been fabricated and he was being framed! It was just too perfect. I just thought that he was some poor sap that had been chosen because of the things he’d said online, not that he was an agent who was in on the whole thing.

What I’m confused about is whether he was supposed to go down with Cryus or if he was a false flag. If he was supposed to go down with Cyrus, then why did they pay Tom to come forward and lie about being the real shooter?

Liv made Eli’s job so much harder. If she hadn’t found out that he’d tampered with the voting machines in San Benito and thwarted that effort, Frankie would never have died. That was never the plan and was the last resort. In an indirect way, Liv is responsible for Frankie’s death and she doesn’t even know! Given that Frankie is dead and Cyrus is in prison, has she really earned the oval office like she wanted to? The people didn’t vote for Mellie.

Random thoughts:

  1. Papa Pope isn’t the most likeable character, but I love his love for Liv.
  2. I don’t think you can challenge these people Eli.
  3. Why can’t these people do this themselves and leave Eli out of it?
  4. “My wish is your ‘COMMAND’.”

Reign S04E04 Recap

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

Darnley’s new found ambition to be king was so blatant when he first met Mary in the field that I was wary of him from then. I didn’t trust him at all because his demeanour and attitude seemed quite different from what we’d seem of him before; he wasn’t that ambitious. All he wanted was to be able to marry Lady Keira. I guess now that his heart is broken and he’s lost her he’s figured why not get the most out of his marriage with Mary.

I knew he’d set the second fire when no one could find him and he just happened to be in the house right as it went up in flames and a child needed saving. Further, the way he looked at Mary when she was being praised by the townspeople was full of pure jealousy. And James didn’t seem to trust him either because he was watching him very closely. Just when I’d decided to turn down my skepticism toward him – he was charming and seemed to be sincere when he was handing out the bread to the people – he proved himself to be a snake.

I do not trust how easily he accepted Mary’s terms on their marriage concerning the Crown Matrimonial. He’s so strange; on the one hand he makes his ambitions painfully obvious and on the other seems 100% sincere in his proclamations of being dutiful to Mary as her husband and protecting her…and also he set a fire to make himself look like a hero. Which he could have done by helping put out the first fire instead of just standing around.

I’m pretty sure that Mary’s “Loyal Watchman” is actually James. The only problem with that is that it doesn’t make sense that he would inform her of his suspicions in such a manner; he would come to her and tell her himself. I see no reason why he could not. She trusts him now.

Leeza with her nosy self and holier than thou attitude, combined with her quest to make Claude’s life miserable (because she has Catherine’s love when she herself never did), sought to punish Claude for sleeping with a married man. So it was either the nunnery or an arranged marriage. So Claude, like Mary, found herself a husband in this episode. She and Luc got married a lot sooner than I thought they would. I didn’t expect their wedding to be an immediate affair.

Luc has been sweet, kind and considerate toward Claude since the moment they met and I loved how he stepped in and shut down Leeza at their reception. Every time he did something dreamy, I swooned and loved him even more. It doesn’t help either that he’s not a bad specimen to look at. But…he is Narcisse’s son. And as much as both Narcisse and Luc established that they never got along because they were so different, the fact that he is his child makes me cautious about him.

Catherine as well and I’m glad she gave Claude that little pre-wedding talk about not trusting him too completely or hastily. She definitely needs to get Claude out of the marriage now that Leith has returned. Just as I was coming to accept that the Leith and Claude ship had sailed and was getting ready to embrace Luc and Claude. I so wanted him to run to Claude’s room and interrupt her first night with her new husband. Catherine needs to get the two of them back together.

First though, she has to speed up her plans of getting rid of Leeza so that she can stop trying to ruin Claude’s life. Which, because that’s what Leeza’s after, makes me hope that Claude and Luc work out and are happy together. Just so that Leeza can’t have that win.

What the hell is going on with Charles? Taking Bianca to look at dead bodies? The blood in his mouth? Pushing Catherine? We need to find out what’s going on with him very soon. I suspect he’s dying and going mad just because that’s what happened to him historically if Wikipedia is to be believed. But the show needs to give us their own answer for his behaviour.

One of Elizabeth’s plans this season has actually worked and she successfully won Lord Maxford to her side. I despised him from the first, though, because he totally ignored her in their first being just because she was a woman. It was that attitude precisely that made me think that her plan didn’t work; she made the kill that he had failed to do, and in a far flashier manner, when they went hunting. I assumed he would resent her because she, a woman, did something that he could not. Instead, it won her his respect.

I understand that Elizabeth is a royal and people of her station don’t raise their children themselves, but she didn’t need to insult Gideon for being a hands on parent. Now, the demands she made of his time have caused him to feel guilty for failing to notice the severity of Agatha’s ailment. I don’t want his daughter to die at all, not after all of the trouble he’d gone through to get her back and not right after he lost his once chance with Mary. It’s a shame that his queen, indeed, doesn’t have any power to change that.

Random thoughts:

  1. Well Bianca’s fine…ish…
  2. Why is Elizabeth’s default solution killing people?
  3. Screw off Leeza.
  4. Yay! Praise for James.
  5. We need more shirtless James!
  6. Why is Catherine’s default solution killing people?

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

It was nice to have an episode in which Mary and James got along and she was not berating him. I was pleasantly surprised that she actually sought advice from him concerning whether or not to accept Gideon’s marriage proposal and abdicate her throne or marry Darnley. And that she actually listened to him and did what he suggested by publicly displaying her and Gideon’s affections for one another. She kind of had to include him in the decision since he would have ruled as her regent if she married Gideon, but I still liked seeing her behave that way toward him.

I thought that Gideon and Elizabeth’s offer was a good one; everyone would win in that situation and it would have meant a peaceful resolution to the conflict. I believed Elizabeth when she said that the fortifications had been underway long before she made the arrangement with Mary and she chose to put her there because she was considering her safety.

Unfortunately, Mary heard about it from Lady Lennox, who I do think despite her telling the truth, was using it to get what she wanted. I can’t entirely dismiss her concerns about Elizabeth not being able to move past her fear, however. Both Elizabeth and Lady Lennox said things I agreed with. Ultimately I think that Elizabeth would never have done anything to harm Mary if she could help it.

Now Mary has the not so easy task of courting Darnley after he witnessed her clearly being interested in someone else and losing the woman he loved.

I’m a little surprised that Greer isn’t in on the plot to seduce Emily Knox. She wouldn’t have approached James about his attention toward her if she was. I’m with James on feeling a ways about taking advantage of someone so innocent and keen on keeping her marriage vows. I’m expecting that James’ flirtations will go from just being part of a ploy to use her to becoming genuine.

It’s only three episodes into the season and I think I’ve reached the peak of my tolerance for Leeza. I want her gone. Catherine needs to find a way to get her sent back to Spain. Over the course of this episode she went from annoying to unbearable. Especially when she came at Catherine for “daring to take [her] on” and threatened Claude in the church. I don’t know why she’s at French court and trying to remake it in her image. What’s the motivation there?

Clearly the terms of her deal to free Narcisse are moot now since Narcisse got himself out of England. Her efforts transpired after he’d already left. She did nothing and is owed nothing. I’m glad that Narcisse is back in France and keeping his positions as Lord Chancellor. I’m not so glad that he wants nothing to do with sweet, little Baby John but I can understand. At least he’s back home with his grandmother, aunt and uncle; people who love him and will protect and care for him.

Is Charles sick and also going mad? Or is his madness making him sick or vice versa? I thought he was just being moody because he was sick, but it seems like he’s going mad. Either that or he just said and did the things he did to Bianca to scare her off. The fact that she’s missing greatly concerns me, though. I knew something bad was going to happen to her when Narcisse told her “If it pleases the King, don’t stop.” Those were very ominous words. And leave it to Narcisse to try to motivate a king with sex.

Random thoughts:

  1. No! Not the Danish prince.
  2. I love it when Catherine and Narcisse team up.
  3. Catherine: “Some friend of his was roasted alive.” She said that so flippantly!
  4. This is why you do your own poisoning, Catherine.
  5. According to history, Elizabeth, you will be the queen that survives.

By fourteen, Walcott’s journey as a published poet began and his growth in the art world ascended in leaps and bounds. He had written five plays at sixteen and went on to further publish his first collection of poetry.

His continued dedication to writing over the years produced an extensive body of work earning him awards such as the 1992 Nobel Prize in Literature, W.H. Smith Literary Award, T.S. Eliot Prize
and Griffin Trust for Excellence in Poetry.

Some of his famous pieces including the plays Dream on Monkey Mountain; Beef, No Chicken; and The Capeman, and the poems such as The Sea is History, A Far Cry from Africa and Forest of Europe.

Love After Love

The time will come
when, with elation
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror
and each will smile at the other’s welcome,

and say, sit here. Eat.
You will love again the stranger who was your self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you

all your life, whom you ignored
for another, who knows you by heart.
Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,

the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life.”

Rest in peace, Sir Derek Walcott…

Reign S04E02 Recap

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

Elizabeth was so close to getting rid of John Knox. So close! But he just had to go snooping around English court asking about Renee. I can’t blame Baby John’s new nurse for giving him the information that she did; she didn’t know who he was and she was just correcting him on some misinformation. Still, I really wish she’d just shut up about it and not clued him into Elizabeth, Gideon and Narcisse’s plan.

Trying to entrap him wasn’t the most solid of plans and it backfired on Elizabeth in the worst possible way. Not only did she discover that disloyalty toward her was far more widespread amongst English nobles than she’d imagine, but the means by which she chose to dispose of her dissenters only made her situation worst. I don’t know what she could have done in that situation, honestly. No matter what she did, tried the men in court or [try] to discreetly kill them as she did, she would have created more dissension and support for their cause. Which is what happened. There was no way she could win there.

I was so looking forward to Narcisse getting his vengeance for Lola’s death. Not just because I despise Knox and want him to be killed off already, but also because seeing him die at the hands of Narcisse, Elizabeth or Mary would be perfect. They are the three people he’s screwed over the most with his scheming, not counting Baby John.

Narcisse has turned his attentions elsewhere, for now at least, toward plotting against Elizabeth since she didn’t grant him his opportunity to kill Knox. He remains brilliant in his maneuvering by intercepting the payment that was to be made to Lady Keira’s fiance, Lord White. It was very stupid of Elizabeth to have Gideon speak openly of their plans for Darnley in front of Narcisse. He had all of the ammunition he needed to move against her. And the fact that Narcisse tattled on Darnley to his mother is kind of funny.

I expected that Darnley’s deal with Elizabeth would fall through when he was literally rolling around in the hay with Lady Keira. The negotiations between Elizabeth and and Lord White were not yet complete. Then and only then should he have been confident that their relationship could move forward as they wished. Whenever a character gets ahead of themselves in things like this, it usually means that the thing they’re excited about won’t happen. I can’t wait to see how he – and Elizabeth – will react to the news.

I feel like Mary’s desire to avenge Lola is clouding her judgement to some degree. James trying to seduce Emily Knox could backfire very easily, as James said himself, especially since James is on the outs with Knox at present. That’s quite a dangerous situation for Mary to try to put him in, although I think it’s a good idea, and she was very much out of place for writing the letter to Emily and sending her the gift without James’s consent.  You can’t exactly be out of place when you’re a queen though; you decide where said place is for yourself and all of those around you. But that was wrong of her.

She was being way too hard on James. I do think she shouldn’t put her complete trust in him just yet and he does need to prove to her that he is loyal, but she needed to let up a little. She was too harsh. It’s a good thing that the two of them made up before she pushed him away. She was the one making him hating her. It wasn’t fair of her to say that he didn’t know what it was like to hold the lives of a village in his hands, when he was the one who was her regent and in charge of the lives of all of the people of Scotland. That was arrogant of her and downplayed the significant contributions he made to her rule while she was in France.

I really want Greer to accept Mary’s proposal and stay in Scotland. I was surprised and pleased when she presented it to her. I want the show to end its run with Mary’s last remaining lady-in-waiting at her side. As much as Mary guarantees that Greer will be safe from court gossip, though, she won’t be and I think Greer knows that. Even so, I really want her to move back to Scotland. She does seems to have a nice life in France with Castleroy and their little girl Rose, but this would be a raise in station for her after having fallen so far. Not that that is something she wants or cares about, but still.

Queen Leeza is getting increasingly more irritating, walking around French court like she’s the biggest somebody there just because she’s married to King Philip. She is, but her attitude is so annoying and for someone supposedly so pious, doesn’t she know that pride is a sin? She is the Queen of Spain and not the Queen of France. Spain does not have power over France. It would be fine if she were doing it to try to help and empower her family, but that’s not the case. It’s just her being pompous. The disdain Catherine has for her continues to be amusing.

Catherine seems to be on her way to losing another child. Even before we saw Charles’ hands I knew he was sick; he was sweaty and look extremely tired. Catherine knows something is up but I don’t think she suspects illness. Obviously it can’t get out that the King is gravely ill, not with Leeza hovering around trying to seize French court for herself. I wish he would just talk to her and let her know what’s going and let her help him; she would excel and keeping things in order and hiding this.

I don’t want Charles to die. I like him as a character and I don’t want Catherine to suffer any more losses concerning her children.

Random thoughts:

  1. Knox’s other weakness is that he thinks he’s smarter than you because you’re a woman.
  2. Is Charles in Canada right now?
  3. I thought Claude and Catherine were on better terms! She killed Martel de Guise for you Claude, be a little nicer.
  4. Elizabeth looked like saying the words “I could not look forward to anything more” to Knox was killing her.
  5. Hey! Charles is back from Canada.
  6. Leave it to Knox to have a wife far younger them him that is timid and meek.
  7. This man that got sent after Knox has no sense of urgency.
  8. Oh no…Charles is sick.

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

We spent the entirety of this week’s episode in the version of Clockworks that I thought was David’s creation in an attempt to save Syd from being attacked by the Devil With The Yellow Eyes in the White Room, but was actually created by the Devil With The Yellow Eyes itself. The reason it sent everyone there was to keep David “comfortable” so that it could have free reign over his body.

It sees David’s interpersonal relationships as a hindrance that keep it from achieving its goal. Said goal seems to be attaining power and David, being the uber powerful mutant that he is, is the perfect vessel for that. By combining its powers with David’s it can effectually make itself a god – or at least “give God a run for His money” as it put it – and that seems to be its ultimate goal.

The Devil With The Yellow Eyes confirmed its parasitic relationship with David has endured for far longer than I had assumed. I thought that it had attached itself to him when he was a child, around the age he was when we saw him with King. But according to the Devil With The Yellow Eyes, it’s been with him “since the womb.” David was born with this inside of him, longing for his power and destroying his mind, for his entire life. That explains why he saw it as King as a child, before his mutant powers had ever emerged.

It made it sound like it could sense David’s power even in utero and the potential that he possessed and that’s what attracted it to him. It’s also the reason why Charles gave him up for adoption in the first place; to get David away from it. I don’t see how that would have worked though – and we know that it didn’t – since it has been a part of David since before he was born.

We learned a lot about the Devil With The Yellow Eyes in this episode. It essentially gave David a villain monologue. We started delving into its backstory sooner than I thought we would, but there are only two episodes left. This is something that I expected would happen in the penultimate episode, right before the climax of the season. Perhaps we’ll learn even more next week.

Syd was the only one who was unconsciously aware that what she was experiencing wasn’t real. The Devil With The Yellow Eyes watched her very closely and it was smart of it to have David believe that she suffered from delusions; of course David wouldn’t believe anything she said if that were the case. Even without tinkering in David’s mind to change her diagnosis, her being in a psychiatric hospital would made her words less credible.

In the end it just lured her away and locked her in the room behind the door in the hallway, which I’m not quite sure what it is. The Devil With The Yellow Eyes’ trippy little traipse through the places we’ve seen David in thus far didn’t help in determining what the room is either, but it did show that the room can be changed to anything. In any case, as it said, keeping David comfortable was a lot of work and Syd presented a major problem. Lulling her to sleep and locking her up was a good means of keeping her out of the way.

Oliver came to their rescue, though, by pulling them out of the fake Clockworks. Or rather, he pulled out Cary and Cary pulled out Melanie (if that was him in the diving suit then) and woke up Syd. I was hoping that Oliver and Melanie would have a reunion in the astral plane, but that didn’t happen. A couple of questions though: Why didn’t Cary go after Kerry first, though, and what does The Eye want with her?

Random thoughts:

  1. The Devil With The Yellow Eyes is a very aggressive therapist.
  2. Why is Amy a touchy nurse and a bully? Is this her real personality?
  3. I wouldn’t put on those headphones if I were you, Syd.
  4. David saw the door! And heard the music Syd was listening to behind it! There’s his proof that Syd is telling the truth.

Legion airs Wednesdays at 10 PM on FX.

Reign S04E01 Recap

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

Between last season and this one I’d actually forgotten that Lola was beheaded. All of Mary’s ladies-in-waiting are gone now and that idea kind of makes me nostalgic for when the series first began and they were all together. I don’t expect to see much of Greer this season since she’s in France and not part of French court anymore and Mary is in Scotland. It would have been nice to get more of a scene for Lola’s funeral instead of a few shots. And poor Narcisse, scoundrel that he is, was unable to attend.

On the topic of dead characters, I don’t want to believe that Leith is dead. I love him and Claude together. It took me a very long time to accept that Greith was over and embrace this ship. But it looks like Claude has decided to accept that he is, in fact, dead. Her desire to avenge his death at the hands of Martel de Guise’s men inspired what I think is one of the most beautiful moments of mother-daughter bonding between her and Catherine.

Leave it to Catherine de’ Medici to make murder a beautiful mother-daughter bonding moment. As much as I used to hate her, her love for her children and the lengths she will go to to protect them always redeemed her for me. She’s an extremely more likeable version of Cersei Lannister; the ruthless, power hungry queen who would do anything to hold onto her throne and seize more power for herself.

Her other daughter, Queen Leeza, I totally forgot existed and needed to refer to one of the Reign fan wikis to find out who she was. She’s very annoying in that she’s positioning herself to take over control of French court – and how dare she side eye Catherine for sitting down first – but I do like the relationship dynamic between her, Catherine and Claude and look forward to see more scenes with them together. Particularly like the one in which Catherine explained away Martel’s death. It’s funny watching her do her usual Catherine de’ Medici spiel to cover up something that she’s done, when she knows that Leeza knows that she lying.

Back in Scotland, Mary was kidnapped by Clan Gordon in an effort to force her to marry George, the son of their leader. I was amused by the gall that the Earl of Clan Gordon had to speak to Mary, his Queen, the way he did and threaten and black mail her. Mary had even me fooled when she “accepted” “George’s” proposal. But our clever Queen Mary had a plan. I burst out laughing when George passed out as Mary tried to seduce him and she was surprised that it had been so easy and effective. I cheered when she killed that one guard that tried to recapture her and again when she put James in his place when she met him and his men on the road.

I thought it was very smart the way she handled clan Gordon after their treason and James in the process. I do believe that James really does want to serve Mary and be loyal to her, but I think she needs to be careful of how stern she is to him. She could very easily drive him into the hands of John Knox. And as much as I believe in James’ sincerity, I don’t trust him 100% because of his long relationship with the man.

He may believe himself to be a man of God, but John Knox is the devil in my eyes and I can’t wait until he’s killed off. It’s a shame that his plan to pit Mary and Elizabeth against each other succeeded flawlessly.

Baby John is so sweet and so precious and my heart broke for him in this episode, watching him sit on the bed and cry as Gideon tried to reason with Renee. He is so young to have suffered as much as he has and I wonder what will happen to him now that both of his parents are dead. Perhaps he will go back to France with Narcisse. He is the greatest casualty of Knox’s plot.

I really like Elizabeth and I think that under any other circumstances she and Mary would be the best of friends. That’s why I totally understand her desire to never get to know Mary personally. I can see them getting closer than even she and Lola were. But as she said, they’ve been positioned as rivals and who they are, politically and dynastically speaking,  means that that can never be.

Lord Darnley made his grand entrance at the end of the episode and it looks like Mary and Elizabeth may well be fighting over his loyalties for at least a small part of the season. Given that this series is filled with strong female characters, I was a little peeved that two of it’s three most powerful women seem to be set up to fight over a man. The saving grace here, though, is that the fight is political and not romantic so it’s not at all bothersome.

Knowing what really happened historically speaking, we all know that Mary will never claim England’s throne and become it’s Queen. In fact, she’s beheaded. Seeing as this is the last season I am very curious to see if that is how the series will end. I don’t think that it will, though, and will instead end on high note for Mary. She may not get England, but I think that she will secure her footing as Queen of Scotland.

Random thoughts:

  1. Remember when Claude was annoying?
  2. I don’t remember who you are Martel de Guise, but I don’t trust you.
  3. Clan Gordon really underestimated Mary.

Reign airs Fridays at 9 PM on The CW.
