TV Recap Preview – The Sinner

0

Premiere date: August 2nd

Network: USA

Starring: Jessica Biel, Bill Pullman, Christopher Abbott, Abby Miller and Dohn Norwood.

Synopsis: An eight episode close-ended series, The Sinner follows a young mother (Jessica Biel) who, when overcome by an inexplicable fit of rage, commits a startling act of violence and to her horror has no idea why. The event launches an inverted and utterly surprising crime thriller whose driving force is not the “who” or the “what” — but the “why” — as an investigator (Bill Pullman) finds himself obsessed with uncovering the woman’s buried motive. Together they travel a harrowing journey into the depths of her psyche and the violent secrets hidden in her past. – USA.

Why we’re watching: Jessica Biel is one of those actresses who should be a lot more famous than she is and in bigger profile roles and films than she gets. Little known now except for being the wife and baby mama of Justin Timberlake, she’s been working consistently for years but not in anything of note. Her role in The Illusionist with Edward Norton was a demonstration of the acting talent she has and this seems to be another opportunity for her to show it off. Plus, the series marks her return to TV after her not so graceful exit from the 90’s hit Seventh Heaven.

Aside from that, the series looks to be every bit the intriguing crime-thriller-drama that will drive home the suspense, crank up the tension to eleven and leave viewers agonising over the week long wait between episodes and wildly speculating. It should at least be all of those things even if it isn’t particularly good. Those are what make crime thrillers fun to watch.

Edwin Yearwood Releases ‘Tax-He’

0

One of Yearwood’s latest offerings for this year’s Crop Over season “Tax-He” was released yesterday.

The song serves as a strong criticism of the recently enacted budget and makes reference to the fiasco that was the purchasing of a brand new Mercedes Benz for Prime Minister The Right Honourable Freundel Stuart soon after the said budget was proposed. An incident which raised the ire of many Barbadians and was widely condemned.

The first verse opens with the lyirics “What is going on in this country/Don’t look like a fella care bout we/When they want to fix their budget/There’s only one thing to do it seems.” “Tax-He” also features the refrain “A man in a Benz and I in a taxi…Dem in a Benz and we in a taxi.”

The Return of the Note 7

0

The Galaxy Note 7 is in the news once more. After the torrid PR firestorm last year, Samsung has decided to relaunch the device exclusively in its home country. The Galaxy Note, now dubbed the ‘Fan Edition’, will be released on the July 7 and only around 400,000 units are being produced, although this number is expected to increase. According to reports, the phone will cost around $610 USD, about $300 USD cheaper than the original Galaxy Note 7 when it came out just under a year ago.

Around that time it was the most anticipated Android device of 2016, up until Samsung issued an unprecedented recall. Several online postings from buyers at the time, revealed the phone combusting while charging. Samsung took immediate action to address the situation, with a worldwide recall. It was shocking to see a manufacturer issue a recall on such a grand scale. Usually if reports filter in about problems with a product, the company would offer a refund or to exchange the device with a new one. Samsung on the other hand, seemingly knowing the full scale of the issue, took a giant step to bring back in their flagship device for investigation. Several online publications at the time estimated that the recall’s cost amounted to $1-2 billion USD. Now they say the cost was close to $3 billion USD.

Issuing the recall certainly made them look noble in their customers’ eyes. Samsung was terrified of a damaged reputation, however phone combustion is not something customers would forget in a hurry. Not to mention this might affect their stance with the increasing competition from other companies such as Apple and Huawei.

After a three month investigation to solve the mystery of the Note 7 Fiasco, two different issues were the culprit. According to Samsung, the problem which affected the first batch of Galaxy Note 7 phones was the battery being too large for the casing. This battery defect caused some of the released devices to overheat. Having issued the initial recall for the Note 7 phones, Samsung started manufacturing the new ones with batteries from a different supplier. The South Korean company however was in a rush to get the new phones back onto the market, and completely missed another defect in the newly provided batteries. This caused the new phones to experience overheating problems similar to the previous batch. In an effort to prevent such a situation from every happening again, Samsung developed a new eight-point battery check ensuring future devices won’t suffer the same fate as the Galaxy Note 7.

Beneath recall incident the Galaxy Note 7 is arguably the best Android phone released last year, with highly favourable reviews from multiple sites and individuals. It’s surely Samsung’s hope that last year’s incident does not totally overshadow what is still considered to be an A class product.

This news of the Note 7 relaunch comes on the heels of the latest Samsung Galaxy Note 8 leak, which revealed some of the device’s specifications and starting price. With the Galaxy Note 8 expected to drop sometime in the upcoming months, Samsung’s future plans for the Note 8 will be worth keeping an eye on.

TV Recap Preview – Will

0

Premiere date: July 10th

Network: TNT

Starring: Laurie Davidson, Olivia DeJonge, Colm Meaney, Mattias Inwood, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Jamie Campbell Bower, Ewen Bremner, Ben Fox, Amanda Lawrence, Derdre Mullins, Michael Elwyn, Will Irvine, Michael Nardone, Dean-Charles Chapman and Nancy Carroll.

Synopsis: Will tells the wild story of young William Shakespeare’s (Laurie Davidson) arrival onto the punk-rock theater scene in 16th century London — the seductive, violent world where his raw talent faced rioting audiences, religious fanatics and raucous side-shows. It’s a contemporary version of Shakespeare’s life, played to a modern soundtrack that exposes all his recklessness, lustful temptations and brilliance. – TNT.

Why we’re watching: There’s one thing that can be said of the show so far, judging it based solely on the trailer; it’s definitely pretty. The costuming is colourful, extravagant and decadent. Everything you could want from a period drama that somehow incorporates punk-rock. The production design here looks very good as well, but there is more to a series than just the mise-en-scene. The show promises drama and intrigue mixed in with heaps of that rebellious punk-rock spirit. It looks interesting to say the least and the whole punk-rock angle is enough to make one curious.

WHY WE’RE WATCHING

Because that’s the most hilarious thing I’ve heard of in a show, well except that one short with the anthropomorphic fart from this season last year (I wish I was kidding about that happening). Whether you call it soccer or football, we can all agree that it is a sport with maneuvers that’ll get the players’ uniforms dirty, and it’ll be interesting to see how Aoyama protects himself from the cruel fate of getting dirty. Peace out and I’ll see you all for the first recap next week! Otanoshimi ni! (Look forward to it!) ><

‘Rough Night’ Film Review

0

Rough Night is a dark comedy film written by Lucia Aniello and Paul W. Downs and directed by Aniello. The film stars Scarlett Johansson as Jess, an aspiring politician who is running for office and goes to Miami for her bachelorette weekend with her college friends Alice (Jillian Bell), Blair (Zoë Kravitz), Frankie (Ilana Glazer) and Pippa (Kate McKinnon). After a night of partying Jess’ friends decided to get her a stripper and the girls return to the home. When the stripper arrives he is accidentally killed and the girls must figure out what to do with his body.

The character that stands out the most is Jess’ fiancé Peter. Unlike most male love interests in films in which the female lead is a workaholic career-woman with little time for much else, he’s not bemoaning that fact or making her feel bad about it. He’s totally understanding and supportive and that’s refreshing. As the film goes on, however, we see that he’s the typical overly sensitive man whose sensitivity comedies play up for laughs. It’s a little emasculating, but there are moments of genuine hilarity that come out of it.

Jess’ best friend and secondary lead character, Alice, is very similar to Pam from the TV show Archer and not because they’re both big women. They share some personality traits like being loud, wild, inappropriate and perpetually horny. She’s the antithesis to Jess’ serious, straight-laced, would-be politician who used to be just as much of a party animal as her. Her over the top personality edges on being insufferable and she’s perhaps too old to be acting the way she does, but she’s ultimately fairly likable. It’s also worth noting that the film doesn’t treat her weight as the butt of a joke.

The other characters, including Johansson’s Jess, are all pretty forgettable. Except perhaps for fake SJW Frankie, whose insistence on making everything a political situation and recitation of internet SJW buzzwords and phrases whilst indulging in the very things she’s speaking out against, grates on the nerves somewhat. But her character is so forgettable that it’s not as annoying as it could be. If it was supposed to be funny, it wasn’t.

The subplot involving Peter is funnier and more entertaining than the main plot with Jess and her friends once the film gets going. Not to say that the main plot is worse than the subplot, it really isn’t. The subplot just brings a bit more of what you’d want out of a comedy. It consistently makes you laugh pretty much every time the film goes back to it. The whole film consistently makes you laugh, in fact, but more so there.

Not all of the jokes land but more often than not they do. It’s a very funny film, certainly funnier than the supposed comedy Baywatch. It elicits actual (sometimes loud) laughter and not just a chuckle. At some points, there are even tears. When it’s not laugh out loud funny, it’s funny in the way that you smile broadly and shake your head at the ridiculous thing that a character is doing or is still doing. The point is, it’s a fun ride.

There is one joke however, about a white police officer that almost shot someone after pulling them over (that person was white) for speeding. Considering everything that has been happening in the U.S. concerning police brutality and the unlawful deaths of Black men at the hands of allegedly trigger happy police officers, the joke was rather tasteless.

The revelation that occurs at the climax of the film is something that the audience should see coming, especially if attention is paid to a particular background detail in the scene in which the stripper arrives. It’s fairly conspicuous so it’s hard to miss and plays into two common tropes with situations like these in film and TV. The expectation is that the revelation will happen there, but it doesn’t happen until nearly the end of the film.

This is not a film that requires outstanding acting performances and there are none here. The actors do competent jobs in their roles. McKinnon, though, is kind of awkward in the way that Saturday Night Live alumni often times are. It makes sense for her character since she is the fifth wheel for a good deal of the film, but it’s cringey in a bad way and not particularly funny. She makes very exaggerated faces and her acting in general is far more exaggerated than the rest of the cast. It feels like she’s trying a little to hard to act and be funny. But you do get used to it.

Rought Night is a very enjoyable, funny and entertaining film. It’s by no means a great film, but you can have fun with it. It’s very much in the vein of films of it’s ilk like The Hangover and Bridesmaids and if you liked those films, you should have no problems watching this.

Lord Zenn Presents Good Looking

0

We all need some triple-action VCP protection.

“In comedy, laughter settles all arguments.” These are the words of the infamous creative writing instructor, Robert McKee. Those words rang true to me after witnessing the truly mesmerizing performance of Lord Zenn’s Good Looking last Saturday night. It’s only been a year since Jherad Alleyne, aka Lord Zenn, dominated the social media landscape in Barbados with his comedic short videos which garnered him notoriety. Mr ‘Good Looking’ himself has obviously noticed the power of his current status with his fans, and decided to take the plunge with a short stage play. Was the risk worth the reward?

Before we answer that, let us have a brief synopsis of the play. Good Looking was written and co-directed by Annette Alleyne. It’s about Tiquan (Jherad) following his dream to become a famous stripper, while keeping it a secret from his germophobic, narcissistic, sugar mama Gloria (Cassandra Odle). On Tiquan’s journey to stardom, we also meet his crazy best friend known as Buddy (Nelieux) who’s the catalyst behind Tiquan meeting the pretentious strip club owner known as ‘Madame Xotic’ (Yaisa Peter).

Along the way to achieving his dream, he has to deal with the occasional nagging phone calls from his fully audacious baby mother Sharkeisha (Kimberley Yearwood) and dodging the final character in the ensemble, the omniscient maid (Azariah Best), from telling Gloria about his plans. All of these unique and colourful characters are both witnesses and in many cases, causes of, Tiquan’s ruined plans and eventual downfall.

So what’s so great about Good Looking? The characters and the first half of the script, especially before the intermission.

The humor drenched script is filled with many of today’s current issues: gender roles in society, social classes and education levels. Gloria’s grandiose sense of self-importance is what seemingly drew Tiquan to her, but in the same breathe, it’s what drives Buddy and Xotic crazy. As outsiders looking in, Tiquan’s making a stupid mistake by clinging to his stripping dreams and staying with Gloria. But that would defeat the purpose; Tiquan believes stripping is something he can be great at and something that will prove just how much of a man he is to everyone who doubts him. Because Gloria and her “big up” friends talk about scientific theories around him and put him down, in his mind, stripping will make him feel like a real man.

Is it misguided? Yes. Does it lead to just over two hours of hilarious dialogue however? Yes it does.

The characters that stand out in this play for me personally have to be Tiquan, Sharkeisha, and the Maid. Tiquan, for starters, was a well-developed character from beginning to end. I am sure all of us who had the pleasure of viewing the play felt sorry for him every time he tried to do something to further himself, only be stopped dead in his tracks because of some hi-jinx between his best friend and Madame Xotic.

Sharkeisha only had three appearances during the two hour play, but they all were memorable. Vibrant, booming and “ghetto” are all the perfect words to describe her performance; which resonated with the stereotypical crazy ex baby mummy. Speaking of caricatures, if Bajan sayings came to life, the maid in this play would’ve been the obvious vessel. There isn’t a crazy situation in the play that the Maid doesn’t have words for and we the audience thank her (well, actually him) for that.

It would be easy for me to finish there, however, there are some obvious gripes I had with the experience.

Some of the dialogue and transitions in the play were out of place and broke up the audience’s immersion. After the intermission, which dragged on way too long, we missed the obvious climax of an almost seamless evening. In story-telling of all kinds we’re taught to “show don’t tell.” What happened after the intermission was a drawn out recap of the party, that we the audience were looking forward to, along with all of the chaos that came with it. This in my humble opinion wasn’t a wise choice, however it did not ruin the overall fun factor of the piece.

So to answer the question at the beginning, does this plunge into an onstage format work? Yes, in all honesty it does.

Good Looking is a great addition to the theatre landscape of late; the wit and colourful and outlandish characters on display were a welcome sight to behold. A sight I hope will continue in the near future.

Lord Zenn’s ‘Good Looking’ Held Over

0

The social media personality and popular comedian’s stage play Good Looking, about a kept man named Tiquan who tries to become a stripper and keeps said endeavour from his snobbish sugar mama Gloria, has been held over. Jherad “Lord Zenn” Alleyne made the announcement on his Facebook page. The play’s next two performances will be this Saturday and Sunday, June 24th and 25th, in the Liberal Arts Auditorium of the Barbados Community College.

Written and co-directed by Annette Alleyne, Zenn himself plays lead character Tiquan with Cassandra Odle playing Gloria, Renee Nelson his best friend Buddy, Yaisa Peter strip club owner Madam Xotic, Azaria Best the boisterous Maid and Kimberley Yearwood Tiquan’s three-time baby mama Sharkeisha and Mirror.

Last week’s two performances on June 17th and 18th were sold out and well received by their audiences, who filled the auditorium with laughter from beginning to end. In his post, Zenn said  he was “[g]enuinely blown away by the response.”

Tickets for the show are available from Imart Welches, Imart Sheraton, Imart Lanterns Mall, The Blueprint Store and online at Ticket Linkz.

Be sure to look out for our review of and photos from the show, coming soon.
