Game of Thrones S07E07 [FINALE] Recap

0

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

Here we are ladies and gentlemen, the final episode of the penultimate season of Game of Thrones. We laughed, we cried, we cheered, lost ourselves in the hype and had conflicted feelings about shipping Jonerys, but eventually got over them (because, come on, we love this ship). Plenty of fan theories were confirmed while others fell by the way side. We got reunions we’d been waiting for and ones we didn’t even know we wanted or remembered we needed. Now it’s all over and winter has truly, finally, come to all of Westeros and the dead are coming with it (We’ve been saying that for how many season now? It’s only now true.).

So many reunions! Next to the gathering of the Magnificent Seven, the armistice discussion had to have been the most reunions we got in a single scene – maybe even an entire episode – for the entire season. Tyrion and Podrick, Tyrion and Bronn, Brienne and the Hound, Brienne and Jamie, Tyrion and Cersei, the Hound and the Mountain…and they all got their little moments with each other. It’s hard to say which of the reunions I liked best because each one was meaningful in it’s own way, but if I truly had to pick it would be the reunion between Tyrion and Cersei. We’ll get back to that.

The armistice discussion went about as well as anyone could expect; unpleasant for the most part. Cersei was as acid tongued and impertinent as always, right up until the Hound released the wight they’d captured.

I know that we’d seen earlier in the episode that it had survived the trip, but I was still on the edge of my seat wondering if it were “alive” or “dead” as he hauled the crate into the Dragon Pit. Cutting it to pieces was the perfect demonstration of exactly what a wight is and is capable of, aside from having one screeching in Cersei’s face. So was demonstrating how to kill them. I didn’t expect for Jon to include that in his presentation.

I was shocked when Cersei actually agreed to the armistice. I thought she had finally seen reason. But that was too good to be true. I didn’t think that Jon not agreeing to stay neutral in her war with Daenerys would push her to reject the armistice. I’m not sure why it’d be so important to her that he did that. It’s not like Jamie said Jon and his Northern forces would be unbeatable, it was the Dothraki and the dragons. Jon’s neutrality would mean nothing.

Tyrion and Cersei had so much to work through. With all of it laid bare there before them and us, I hadn’t realise how much had transpired between the two up to this point. Their conversation was perhaps the best scene in the episode. Headey and Dinklage have always had excellent chemistry and played off each other so well. I felt for both Tyrion and Cersei and it was all because of their performances. I would have liked to see what their conversation was after Tyrion noticed her pregnancy though.

I was shocked again when Cersei said that the Lannister army would head North and fight the Night’s King with Jon and Daenerys. It was such a turn around for her and she went so much further than they had asked her to. Given that the last of her conversation with Tyrion we saw was his realising her pregnancy, it felt like perhaps Tyrion had used her unborn child to convince her. But again, this was too good to be true. Because Cersei is as stubborn as she is selfish, short-sighted and stupid.

Thankfully, her refusal to do the smart thing finally pushed Jamie away from her. As he said, no matter how you slice it she is doomed to lose. If the Night’s King and his army don’t kill Cersei then Daenerys and her Dothraki screamers will. There is no way Cersei can win and yet she remains resolute in taking a kingdom that she will not be able to keep no matter how hard she tries. It’s truly inexplicable why she can’t see reason.

She did admit to Tyrion that she doesn’t care about the realm, only about herself and those dear to her. But she’s only doing everything that will ensure her own destruction. I was expecting Jamie to kill her then, but she is carrying his child so that would stop him. I was, however, taken aback when it looked like she was going to have him killed. Especially since Jamie was the second of her brothers to challenge her to do it. She even nodded to the Mountain and he drew his sword! What a moment it would have been if she had actually killed Jamie.

My question is, though, whether or not he will take their army North. If he does, he’d be leaving Cersei defenseless. Even then, would their men even march with him? He is their commander and I would think they are more loyal to him than to Cersei.

I didn’t think that Daenerys would take Drogon and Rhaegal to King’s Landing with her. One, because she just lost Viserion and I would think that she would want to keep the other two out of harm’s way. Two, just so she wouldn’t show her enemies that she lost one of the dragons (Cersei noticed she was short by one). Sure, they’re an excellent show of force and a wonderful deterrent had Cersei tried anything. I don’t blame her for taking her most powerful weapons. As Cersei showed us, she’s not at all trustworthy and quick to betrayal. Who knew how that meeting would have gone. At least some of the other main players at last got to see a dragon and one had set foot in the dragon pit after a couple hundred years.

The look on Daenerys’ face when Jon turned down Cersei’s terms of neutrality…sure, she admonished him for it later but in the moment, either she looked like she was ready to jump his bones right then and there or my fangirl ways were just projecting. It certainly seemed to me like she was rather thirsty.

Daenerys is totally going to be pregnant at some point next season. If she doesn’t start the series pregnant she will be by or at the end of it. There was way too much talk about succession and her ability to produce an heir between the last episode and this one. With Jon straight up telling her that Mirri Maz Duur is not a reliable source when it comes to her fertility. We all know that she is going to wind up with his baby soon enough. The time is right. Not just because Jonerys was finally solidified, but because if Emergency Awesome is correct, all of the conditions put forth by Mirri Maz Duur have been met for Daenerys to have children again.

The Jonerys sex scene left a lot to be desired for me (no pun intended). I love that we got it and that Jonerys is now an official thing and not just steamy glances and hand holding, but I wish there was more to the scene. They kind of just lied there and kissed and they were holding each other so very, very awkwardly. Also, why did they have to go and ruin it with Tyrion’s worried face? Couldn’t we Jonerys shippers just have that moment without a bad omen looming over it?

On the topic of bad omens, or rather, complications for their relationship, R+L=J has now been triple confirmed! Thanks to Bran and Sam sharing what they both learned about Rhagear and Lyanna, we got to see a flashback to the wedding of Jon Snow’s parents. And they have the Maester’s diary to prove it. It doesn’t make sense though that Bran, having the power to see the past and present all over the world (which in and of itself is nonsensical – to some extent – and irrelevant) didn’t see their wedding until Sam brought it up.

We also finally got to learn Jon’s real name; Aegon Targaryen. If we needed any further proof that Jon will end up on the Iron Throne, that was it. Why else give him the name of the man who made the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros in the first place? With Jon and Daenerys now headed to Winterfell, where Bran and Sam are waiting, they’re both about to find out about his lineage. What remains to be seen is how it will affect their relationship when they find out that he is the rightful heir to the Iron Throne.

She, of course, won’t be happy that he bumps her down the line of succession but Jon wouldn’t want the Iron Throne to begin with. The obvious solution would be they simply get married. However, that would still make Jon ruler and not Daenerys and it would put him in a position of power that I can’t imagine he’d want. Perhaps Jon will renounce his claim so that she can take the throne, but then their relationship will have to end? Her getting pregnant, though, would force a marriage between them. He wouldn’t leave his child to be a bastard.

Theon finally got a win! He has risen triumphant! He has shed his Reek persona and is no longer the coward he always has been. The scene between him and Jon in the Dragonstone throne room was so touching. His entire character arc has been about him trying to find his identity, as a Greyjoy or a Stark, and Jon just gave him his identity; he’s both. He knows who he is now and in that, he found strength.

Strength enough to prove himself a worthy leader of what remains of Yara’s fleet and convince them to follow him in rescuing her. Given the beating he was receiving, I thought he really was going to die on that beach. Who knew that Ramsay castrating him would be the thing to save his life?

I’m happy that the drama between Arya and Sansa is finally over. It was a ridiculous story line to begin with and some of the most contrived drama ever in the series. It ended exactly how we all knew it would; with the sisters coming together to pull a fast one on Littlefinger and Arya being the one to execute him. I only wish we had seen the moment when the two realised his deception, or at least had one of them mention said moment in passing. That resolution came out of nowhere.

It was still satisfying to see him pay for all he had done. I had forgotten that Sansa was there when Lysa confessed to her and Littlefinger’s involvement in the death of Jon Arryn. Of his whole plot essentially. Littlefinger probably never gave a thought to the fact that Sansa had dirt on him that she could use.

I know I had listed it in my 7 Reason to Be Excited for Game of Thrones Season 7 article and had expected to see it happen this season, but for some reason it didn’t occur to me that the Wall would fall in this episode. So when we got the pan up the Wall, I thought that the Night’s King would just fly over it on the back of Viserion.

The Night’s King using Viserion to burn down the section of the Wall at Eastwatch (Why there?) was as spectacular as it was dreadful. It was awesome seeing Viserion breathing his blue flames and the section of the Wall crumbling, but now the army of the dead is past the Wall.  The Great War, the War for the Dawn really is here.

Random thoughts:

  1. How many Unsullied does Daenerys have now?
  2. The Hound looked kind of proud to hear that Arya can take care of herself.
  3. Isn’t Jon hot under all of those furs so far South?
  4. Euron you coward!
  5. Brienne swore! And doesn’t care about loyalty!
  6. When will they give Daenerys armour? Gendry’s there. He can make it.
  7. Littlefinger: “I deserve it.” You deserve death.
  8. Rhaegar looks like Viserys.
  9. Tormund CANNOT be dead.
  10. CleganeBowl didn’t happen…

Keppeki Danshi! Aoyama-kun (Clean Freak! Aoyama-kun) E07 Recap

0

Kae-Tan desu~ (*≧▽≦)

Aoyama’s class is in the middle of a P.E lesson, where they are playing basketball. We are introduced to Mio Odagiri, the most popular girl in class and a regular on the basketball team so this should be a cinch for her, right? BUU BUU! She’s great at everything else except the part where she has shoot into the basket.

Even though she stays after practice to improve her skills, she’s never been able to score a basket, and this is threatening her position on the team.Mio observes Aoyama shooting perfectly and asks to be his apprentice so that she can learn his perfect shooting technique, but he tells her that it is done by feeling, which she interprets as listening to her instincts to dunk. When she finally scores a basket, Mio thanks Aoyama, and in the process touches him on his shoulder. However, when Aoyama doesn’t respond to her as he does with other people, the class interprets this as Aoyama being in love with her. (Good grief)

Tsukamoto sees what is going on and spreads the rumour of their ‘relationship’ around the school which makes even the seniors on the basketball team approach him. The rumour also spreads to the Aoyama fan club, which destroys the hopes and dreams of many girls in the club, Moka included. After avoiding some ruckus one morning, Aoyama suddenly asks Sayaka Ariga the impossible. He asks her to shake his hand……….WHHHAAAAA?! She accepts and when she finally pulls away, Aoyama faints as he normally would when someone touches him. Hard to say what is going on with him at this point.

Later on the boys invite Aoyama to arm wrestle and although he initially declines as expected, he bumps into Mio and invites her to arm wrestle with him. All is going well, until the tension from wrestling pops out one her buttons exposing her bra. At this point, the class really believes that the two are dating as Aoyama has never allowed anyone else to touch him.

It even goes as far as Aoyama giving Mio his lunchbox when she forgets her’s, on the condition that she reciprocate the favor for him the next day which she does to the shock of the school! He even invites her to watch one of his matches that same day when the other boys obstruct him from eating Mio’s food. Curiosity gets the better of Narita (the other germaphobe) and he tries to find out while they are playing online together, but Aoyama gives off an impression that it wasn’t in regards to them dating or them being in love.

The Defenders S01E08 [FINALE] Recap

0

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

I was underwhelmed by the reveal of what was behind the door going into this episode and I remained underwhelmed well into it. It really was just dragon bones and said bones were the substance. Beyond just being underwhelmed, I was also very confused.

Was it just me hyping it up to be far more than it was suggested to be or had Alexandra actually made it out to be more than it was? Because I can’t help but think of the conversation she had with Elektra when the latter had just been resurrected and in which she said something about them never having to experience the darkness that comes with death again since they’d been brought together.

That implied that they would never die again and, by extension, have to die to be brought back. At least that’s how I interpreted it. That implied that whatever she was planning that Elektra was a necessary component of, would make them unable to die and really, truly immortal; that the Hand would achieve actual immortality. That just wasn’t the case.

Firstly, Elektra was a glorified retriever. Her key role in all of this was securing Iron Fist. Given that Alexandra had said in a previous episode – the fourth to be exact, right before the boardroom right – that she had killed previous Iron Fists, she clearly didn’t need a super being like Black Sky to capture him. In fact, given that the Hand had done this exact thing several times in the past without a Black Sky further proves how unnecessary she was. She served no vital purpose.

I suppose as long as there is an Iron Fist to kill Shou Lao, there would always bee “substance” for the Hand to mine. That is an interesting idea; that their sworn enemy, whose entire purpose is to defeat them, creates the very thing that fuels them and makes them the Hand.

Coming onto the very end of the series, they introduced the Hand’s other ultimate goal of returning to K’un L’un.  So I thought that what ever was behind the door would help them achieve that or even be K’un L’un itself. But nope! It in no way got them closer to achieving that particular goal. I don’t know why it was mentioned if it wasn’t going to go anywhere.

The big, all out brawl in this episode was a good example of not having disorienting tracking shots in an action set piece. Why they were able to do it in this episode and not episode four is beyond me. I kind of like the music they chose for this scene. It was jarring at first because you don’t really hear hip hop as background music for fight scenes, but it grew on me. The fight choreography here was, again, really good and the fight was fun to watch.

I didn’t like it when Luke said in the beginning of the episode that they had to make sure that not a single innocent person would get hurt when they blew up Midland. That was the equivalent of saying “What’s the worst that could happen?” or “It can’t get any worse than this.” It made me think that someone would get hurt and someone did. Two, in fact.

Misty lost her arm! I couldn’t believe that when it happened. I didn’t think any of heroes would received any serious injuries. So I wasn’t prepared for Matt not making out before the bomb went off either. I expected him to come running out right before it went off. Instead, he decided to stay with Elektra and die.

I wasn’t convinced that he could get through to her like he said he was going to try to do because there was nothing to “get through.” She was no longer the Black Sky. She was Elektra. She’d regained her memories and remembered who she was. She wasn’t doing anything she did under the influence of the Hand. It was all her. She made that choice.

I didn’t think that he was actually dead. For a while there I thought that it was possible that he was, but I wasn’t going to believe it until the final credits rolled and it went to black and we didn’t see Matt at all through the epilogue. And we did see him! His was the very last.  I have no idea where he is or who the nuns are, but for now I’m just going to tell myself that he inhaled some of the crushed dragon bone and that is how he survived.

Overall I had a really good time with the series. I had a few slow episodes, particularly the first and fourth, but they were necessary for plot development. I enjoyed the action sequences and seeing these four characters come together for the first time. I only had one major gripe about the series and I discussed it in the first half of this recap. It’s by no means perfect, but I like it.

Random thoughts:

  1. Luke is the only one against blowing up Midland.
  2. Don’t you dare threaten Misty’s job!
  3. Karen and Trish finally talked!
  4. Why doesn’t Jess do some of the wall breaking too? She’s super strong.
  5. Can’t they just accept Matt’s sentiments?
  6. Yeah Misty!
  7. Is Bakuto immune to bullets now?

All eight episodes of Marvel’s The Defenders are currently available for streaming on Netflix.

The Defenders S01E07 Recap

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

This is why Misty should have been brought in on everything from the beginning, when Luke first suggested it at the Chinese restaurant. Or at least she should have been told enough so that she got a firmer grasp of the situation (she was already investigating the Hand already after all) and just leave out the mystical mumbo jumbo.

Kudos to her for having their backs the whole time they were being held at the police station. I think that even if she had known everything though, she wouldn’t have been able to do more for them in that particular situation than she already had. But they could have trusted her with more information I think. Because of her they weren’t arrested or charged with anything and they got their opportunity to escape.

Kudos also to Foggy for being the ever dependable BFF. He has never liked the fact that Matt is a vigilante, but he always helped him, looked out for him and supported him nonetheless. He even brought him his suit so that he could hide his identity! He’s a real friend and Matt is more than lucky to have him. I think that he will be the one to end up with Karen because she just cannot be supportive of Matt’s crime fighting.

When Misty found the hole in the wall (that either Luke or Jessica could have made, frankly, but it was likely Luke), my first thought was “Where’s Matt?” He and Foggy had just discussed how Matt getting involved in this could ruin his career as a lawyer and his life as a civilian and breaking out with Luke and Jessica would have done just that. Fortunately for Matt, the police just assumed that the two had kidnapped him. That’s not so fortunate news for Luke or Jessica though, especially Luke; he just got out of prison.

While they were busy doing that, Elektra was busy securing her position with the three remaining Fingers. She killed Alexandra because she wanted to be free and she doesn’t want to join the Hand, let alone lead them. All she wants is the substance.

I must say that I was very excited to see Luke, Jessica and Matt fight with Murakami, Gao and Bakuto. Mostly because I wanted to see Gao in action. Of the three Fingers, she was the only one we hadn’t before seen fighting. She was far more nimble and agile than I thought she could have been, considering she walks with a cane and on account of her age. Jessica had absolutely no problem with fighting an old woman. Neither did Luke.

The Fingers kind of quickly disappeared though, so I don’t know if their objective had been to kill them, but they were overwhelmed and ran or if they had simply intended to delay them until Elektra had Danny opened the door.

I agree with Colleen that they should blow up Midland. With the remaining Fingers there, as well as the one thing they had been after this whole time right there, they could kill two birds with one stone; end the Hand once and for all and cut off access to what was behind the door. If the Hand is at all like Hydra killing Murakami, Gao and Bakuto would not end them completely so sealing it would keep away and new Fingers who would wish to pop up.

Danny’s fight and how it would end was predictable as all hell. That’s not a mark against the writers or anything. It’s just that it was really obvious that Danny would glow up and try to punch Elektra, only for her to dodge the blow so that his fist would hit the door. There was no other way that was going to go because there was no other way to get him to open it. He was never going to do it willingly, so he had to do it unwittingly.

I’m quite underwhelmed by what we’ve seen is behind the door. At least so far. I’m assuming that those bones belong to Shou Lao. It’s clear that the door doesn’t lead to K’un L’un. Alexandra and company had been saying that it has something to do with the substance. So that should be there at least.

Random thoughts:

  1. They got arrested!
  2. I’m sure that Jessica can break those cuffs.
  3. Dang, Luke’s still out.
  4. I literally laughed out loud when they took the train.
  5. I love Misty. I know I disliked her a lot in Luke Cage but I really like her now.

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

I have so many questions after the end of this episode that I don’t even know how to sort through them. I did not see that coming. At all. But before we get to that, let’s talk about everything else leading up to it.

Stick double confirmed that Danny is the “key” to the Hand’s plans, which the Defenders didn’t seem to have gathered already. Even though they don’t know exactly what the Hand wants Danny for, Alexandra has twice tried to capture him alive, the second time saying right in front of them that that’s what she was trying to do.

I also don’t understand why Danny finds it so hard to believe that he’s more than just weapon and that his power can be used fro more than that. He’s already seen fro his interactons with Stick that he wasn’t told everything about the Hand or even K’un L’un. I think it’s that he doesn’t want to believe it. Especially when it means he will be taken out of the fight, He’s waited his entirelife to take down the Hand and the rest of the team wants to keep him away from them; rob him of the opportunity to when it’s so close.

I did not know that I wanted Matt and Danny to fight until it happened They are the only two people on the team who are trained fighters and they have more less the same skill est (I’d imagine that the Chaste’s training isn’t much different from that at K’un L’un aside from the chi). I think that that was the best that Danny’s fighting has looked so far. Finn Jones looked to be about as good as Charlie Cox and there weren’t any quick cuts to hide anything.

Matt really needs to sit down with everyone and ell them everything that happened when he last face the Hand. To the smallest detail. Because knowing that the giant hole from Daredevil season two was under Midland would have been a very useful thing to know a good long while ago. I knew that he was looking for something in the piano when he asked about it and the building plans for Midland were tucked away safely inside it. The plans only confirmed my theory that the door Danny has to unlock is right at the bottom of the hole.

I did not expect that Stick would try to kill Danny. I never even thought of it as an option for stopping the Hand. It would be a quick and easy solution but it wouldn’t be a permanent one. There would be an Iron Fist to replace him eventually.

Elektra showing up and being the one to stop Stick was also unexpected. Stick had the perfect opportunity to kill her and he didn’t. I don’t think he could bring himself to. He did just say that she was family. But she had no qualms about killing him. I didn’t want Stick to die and was hoping that Matt showing up and her clearly recognising him meant that he would have been able to stop her from doing it. And now she has Danny.

I never really had any thoughts or ideas about what the door led to, only that whatever was on the other side of it be what the Hand needs to complete their goal; immortality. I don’t recall it being said before this episode that they also want to return to K’un L’un. Alexandra pretty much confirmed my theory that the city had not been destroyed. So I think that perhaps the door will lead them there. It could even be one they can use at any time without waiting every fifteen years for the entrance to open.

If the door does lead to K’un L’un, Alexandra won’t be going. Elektra killed her. Her memories have fully returned now and she is the new leader of the Hand. Just as she was reclaiming her power after being ousted in the last episode – and thanks largely in part to Elektra bringing in Danny no less – Alexandra lost it all. I…didn’t see that coming. When Alexandra got Elektra from the graveyard it looked like she had regained full control of her by manipulating her with the idea of their deaths. Elektra even looked concerned by the idea of Alexandra dying. I suppose she had been playing a part then, because by that point she’d fully recovered her memories (if her dream about Matt was any indication).

Random thoughts:

  1. Alexandra went from looking defeated to looking determined.
  2. Oh. The dead people that Cole went to clean up after were Chaste.
  3. Ha! Stick sent Sowande’s head to the Hand.
  4. Murakami was right about what…?
  5. The Luke and Danny bonding continues!
  6. She hit Luke hard enough to knock him out!

The Defenders S01E05 Recap

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

Things weren’t going well at all for Alexandra in this episode. Things escalated very quickly for her. They went from crumbling to all together imploding by the end of the episode. And all because of Matt.

Matt let his feelings get the best of him! Separating himself and Elektra from everyone. It kind of worked out in the end though because he managed to get through to her. She paused and was actually listening to him when he tried to talk to her. And she attacked Murakami when he interrupted them! That was not a good thing for Alexandra because he already questions her leadership and doesn’t seem to like her reliance on Black Sky. Alexandra saw the entire thing and looked really worried.

Had Matt not run off on his own, they perhaps would not have caught Sowande. In so doing however, he threatened all of their loved ones. A good chunk of this episode was dedicated to the Defenders collecting those close to them and stashing them in the police station with Misty.

Given that the Hand is everywhere and in everything, it was probably the safest place for them when virtually nowhere is safe. With Colleen there – albeit injured – and as the only person with extensive martial arts training, if anything were to happen she could at least put up a good fight. Trish and Misty with their respective martial arts and police training should be able to do some good as well.

Speaking of training, Jessica should probably learn how to actually fight at some point. Beyond just swinging somewhat wildly and relying on her strength. She’s not like Luke, she can be hurt and killed. She got her ass handed to her a little when she went for Trish, who I expected to jump in and fight given her aforementioned training. Not that she’d have been able to take down a Finger of the Hand, but her friend was fighting and she would have been capable of helping out. It’d make sense if she jumped into action to defend not just herself, but Jessica as well (even though Jessica has powers).

Matt really exposed himself with his interrogation of Sowande. He didn’t ask about the Hand and what they were planning at all, he just asked about Elektra. The more he and Sowande talked, the more his relationship with Elektra was becoming apparent. He has been highly emotional for the duration of this series and I thought he’d let his feelings get the better of him, again, and had killed Sowande before they could get any answers out of him. Luckily, he was able to show some restraint.

I love Stick. I really do. He’s the no-nonsense, old, wise guy and resident badass that ever team needs. While the Defenders were busy squabbling over Matt hiding his relationship with Elektra from them – and justifiably so, he really should have been honest with them – no one was paying attention to the awakening Sowande and he got his hands on Danny.

I really thought that the Hand had finally gotten a hold of him and Sowande’s repetition of the word “key” confirmed my theory that Danny is the literal key to unlocking the door. But nope! Stick just calmly and easily decapitated Sowande. No hesitation or anything. He just dealt with the problem. No one saw it coming. Not even Sowande. And without the resources to bring him back, the Hand lost a finger, reducing their number to four. Or rather, three, since Alexandra was kicked out more or less.

I knew that Murakami was going to turn on her. All of the signs were there. There was quite a bit of dissent between the five Fingers, but he was the most distrustful and had openly questioned Alexandra’s leadership and Elektra’s effectiveness as a weapon. After expressing his doubts in front of the other Fingers, they’ve all mutinied against Alexandra. But she won’t take this lying down.

Matt was right, Elektra is still in Black Sky somewhere. I’m not quite sure if she’s completely remembered everything. I don’t think that she has. I think that at this point her instincts are pointing her somewhere (like Matt’s apartment) and she’s operating on residual feelings left over from when she loved him.

Random thoughts:

  1. Gao just straight up shot the dude. I like Gao.
  2. Danny’s fighting didn’t look bad in this episode either.
  3. Bakuto’s alive! Makes sense.
  4. Matt’s in the suit!
  5. Trish and Karen need to link up!
  6. It’s a coup!

The Defenders S01E04 Recap

0

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

We’re at the halfway point of the season! With everything that’s been happening so far coming to a head at Midland, our heroes get to take a bit of a breather. They need it. Because now it’s time to talk. As with most superhero teams when they first come together, there are some growing pains. No one knows anyone – except Luke and Jessica and to some extent Luke and Danny – and so none of them trust each other.

Matt is the most resistant to everything; continuing to investigate, coming together as a team and especially revealing his identity. He didn’t even tell them about Elektra, which I thought that he would. But he’s still very obviously reeling from her death and his last encounter with the Hand. Even if he doesn’t tell them about Elektra (and they’ll find out about her being his ex eventually), he should still share what he knows about the Hand. Like Stick said, Matt and Danny could learn a lot from each other.

Jessica managed to convince Matt to stay, only to then leave herself when Stick  explained the Chaste, Iron Fist and their relationship to each other (the Chaste was to be Danny’s army) and that whatever the Hand is up to is something that they’d done many times before over the centuries. Luke and Danny were the only ones who at no point wanted to leave. Luke because he just wanted to help Cole and protect Harlem and Danny because he saw the value in them working together. He was the only one who wanted to form a team.

Luke and Danny seem to be the only ones bonding as well. Luke may play at not like Danny much or wanting anything to do with him beyond getting his help in dealing with the Hand, but he and Danny are growing on each other. It’s quite obvious and I love the banter they have between each other and their chemistry. Their budding bromance is adorable.

Stick gave us a little history lesson about the Hand. The organisation came out of K’un L’un, the current five Fingers having been its founders who were kicked out of the ancient city. Alexandra is the chief Finger – which we already knew – and had been leading them since their inception. We also learned the name of the Finger operating out of Harlem; Sowande.

The Hand’s ultimate goal has always been achieving immortality. What we don’t know it’s exactly what they’re doing now and how destroying New York City – the latest in a long line of cities they’ve destroyed over the centuries; which includes Pompeii and Chernobyl – helps them achieve what it is that they’re after. This whole destroying cities being part of an effort to achieve immortality makes think of Fullmetal Alchemist.

My question is why they’ve done this thing so many times. Alexandra made it sound like this would be the last time they do it. Like they will truly conquer death with this latest effort. She said that with Black Sky there now, neither of them would have to face death again. Does that mean that Pompeii et al were failures or test runs? Or is this something that they have to do periodically?

It took me a while to realise that Alexandra and Murakami were speaking to each other in different languages and were still understanding what was being said. It looks like she’s assembling her own team by bringing together the five Fingers of the Hand. Of which I think he is the last one we have yet to meet. I don’t recall seeing him in Daredevl or Iron Fist, but my memory is terrible.

I don’t entirely agree with Stick that “Elektra” is no longer herself. She’s not exactly remembering her past, not yet anyway, but there are certainly echoes of it coming back to her. She went back to the weapons rack and examined the sais! Whatever is going on with her, I believe that encountering Matt triggered it.

I wonder if Alexandra had approached Danny alone if he would have gone with her. He did seem to be considering her offer despite her trying to capture him mere hours before. But, he now has a better idea of the devastation that would ensue if he didn’t go with her. Or so she says. What I’d like to know, though, is how she managed to sneak up on all of them without Matt or even Stick noticing until she was right there.

Jessica came back, as we knew she would, after paying the Raymond family a visit and finding one of the Hand’s grunts watching the house. She made a fabulous entrance as well, crashing into the restaurant (which Danny is now going to have to pay for) and running over Elektra. It looks like even more damage is about to be done to place because they’re about to fight.

Random thoughts:

  1. How does Jessica not know about the Luke Cage stuff but knows about the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen? Luke was all over the news.
  2. Stick: “…the Immortal Iron Fist, Living Weapon and Protector of the Ancient City is still a thundering dumbass.” He said it, I didn’t.
  3. Does Alexandra have an illness or is her body just breaking down because its old?
  4. Danny’s still eating?
  5. But what did the dude on the walkie say?

Game of Thrones S07E06 Recap

0

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

This was the most emotionally devastating episode of Game of Thrones. Ever. At least for me. It certainly ranks high on the list of most crushing episodes in the history of the show if the early online reactions are any indication.

There was a fair bit of talk about fathers in this episode, kicked off by Jon and Jorah talking to each other about theirs. That Lord Commander Mormont served as a sort of father figure to Jon and that he saw him as sort of a surrogate son, it was interesting to see them talk to each other about him. And I suppose they kind of bonded over their fathers being honourable men who died because of their honour. And as many fans speculated, Jon did give Jorah Longclaw! But he immediately gave it back. I honestly didn’t think he would keep it.

They even briefly talked about Ned…and how he was going to execute Jorah. He was brought up again when Jon was talking to Beric, who noted that Jon looked nothing like him and must favour his mother. As we all know, Jon truly does. All of these hints and references to R+L=J and the one person who should know above all others is absolutely clueless. Jon truly knows nothing.

Ned came up again with Arya and Sansa. Arya told a story about how Ned caught her practising archery and applauded rather than punished her. It was a really nice moment to see the two sisters remembering him and the story captured who he was. Then Arya had to go and ruin by producing the letter she found in the last episode and accusing Sansa of betraying their family.

Seriously, this thing of Arya being unnecessarily antagonistic toward Sansa is annoying and frustrating. She can’t blame Sansa for writing the letter. She explained it to her; she was forced to do it and was only trying to save their father. Arya refuses to accept that as justification. Given that she knows how timid and naive Sansa was back then you’d think that Arya would understand. Instead, she’s just being indignant.

Like Sansa said, Arya was there at Ned’s execution and she didn’t do anything either. In fact, I’d argue that Sansa did far more to save their father than Arya ever did. I’m glad that Sansa didn’t take any of Arya’s crap. Of the two of them, shes the one who went about restoring their house. Arya never cared about or tried to do anything of the sort. All she wanted was to go about killing people out of revenge. She’s going after Sansa for betraying their family when she herself did nothing to help them.

Perhaps that’s where all of this is coming from. She sees where Sansa succeeded and she failed when it came to their family and she’s taking it out on her. Looking for any little thing to use against her to say that she’s a traitor. I’d like to think that Arya is well aware of what Littlefinger is doing and is playing a part, but that’s not very likely. She really should have told Sansa that she found the letter in his room when she was asked.

Speaking of the slimiest person in all of Westeros, why is Sansa even going to him about this? Not too long ago she wanted nothing to with him and or to hear anything from him. Every time he spoke to her she immediately shut him down. She knows he’s a schemer and manipulator and cannot be trusted. So why is she seeking council from him? It makes no sense at all. He 100% set her up to send Brienne away. It can’t be a coincidence that right after he told her that Brienne would defend either of the sisters should the other attack them, she got an invitation to King’s Landing; the perfect excuse to have Brienne leave Winterfell.

I am really confused about what happened in Arya’s bedroom when she caught Sansa searching it. Did she threaten her or not? Because we know what Arya can do, her telling Sansa that she could take her face and become her is most definitely a threat…but then she gave Sansa the Valyrian steel dagger in a gesture that I cannot for the life of me decipher. She’s been acting really strangely in the last couple of episode and hopefully this little story line will be resolved next week.

Tyrion really laid out Daenerys’ faults during their conversation. Her impulsiveness, her bad temper and above all her hypocrisy. She always says that she doesn’t want to be a tyrannical ruler, but she’s leaning into that pretty heavily by being unnecessarily ruthless. Case in point – as Tyrion points out – burning Randyll and Dickon Tarly. She’s also really stubborn and doesn’t know when to listen.

Tyrion raised some very good points about the succession if she wins the thrones. I really don’t think that Daenerys is barren. I think that somehow Mirri Maz Duur’s prophecy will play itself out before the series ends and she will be able to have children. I’m hoping that’s the case, because I really want her and Jon to make Stark/Targaryen, Ice and Fire babies. Introducing voting is one to go about the succession and it’s not a foreign concept to the Westerosi as Tyrion pointed out. The only thing is how the would specifically implement that.

How lucky was the Magnificent Seven and friends that they just so happened to chance upon a small group of wights with one White Walker and not the whole dang army? Really though, how exactly were they going to go about finding a wight to capture? Were they planning on just wandering around north of the Wall until they just bumped into one? Like pretty much what actually did happen?

In any case, their venture gave us a pertinent piece of information. White Walkers and wights work like the sire lines in The Vampire Diaries and The Originals; if you kill a White Walker you kill every wight that it created. Seeing as the Night’s King is, well, the king of all White Walkers and he is the one who makes more White Walkers…does that mean that if you kill him you kill them all? Did we just find a way to get rid of the White Walkers for good? Beric seems to think that’s the case. If so, all of Sam’s hard work was for nothing. Perhaps he’ll confirm this later.

I do feel it necessary to point out that we didn’t see this happen at Hardhome when Jon killed his first White Walker. Granted, at the time there were no wights around for him to see that happen to. And with it being a huge battle, wights were dropping left and right anyway so if it had happened no one would have noticed that that was why. Still, I don’t think that this was always a thing and that the writers only just came up with it. Of course, it could also be something they got from George R. R. Martin that they only now decided to include.

Thank the Old Gods, the New and R’hollor that the wights screwed up by jumping on that one random dude and broke the ice. Otherwise, Daenerys would never have had time to fly from Dragonstone to rescue the Magnificent Seven. It was 100% percent a plot convenience to be sure, but it was a fairly clever way of dealing with that. Although, it still felt like she got there pretty darn fast.

Daenerys could have gotten there and just picked them up and ran too, if Sandor hadn’t screwed the pooch by throwing rocks at the wights. I knew he was going to end up revealing to them that the water had frozen over again. His taunting the wights got everyone into an avoidable battle.

Not that I didn’t care about the other six, but I really wanted Tormund to live more than anyone else. I was certain he was about to bite it when those wights tried to pull him into the water. Mostly because he’d spoken about how taken he is with Brienne and how he wants to start a family with her. That’s my dream for him too! I really want Tormienne to happen. Maybe a little more than Jon and Daenerys (Jonerys? Jaenerys? Jany? Don?). Characters who discuss their dreams usually die in an episode with a big battle.

I know that I said that I wanted one on the dragons to die…but not like this and not in this context. I wanted one of them to die at the hands of Cersei, not the Night’s King. I was also really angry with Daenerys when I said it so…it doesn’t count. Damn though… it really hurt. More than I thought it would have. Daenerys’ face and Drogon’s weeping (You can’t tell me that that isn’t the sound a dragon makes when it cries!) really drove it home. I’m fairly certain that it was Viserion who died; the wing membranes looked gold.

Narratively, it works better for Viserion to have been killed by the Night’s King. He is the ultimate threat. In so doing, Daenerys is now fully aware of how dire the situation is and what the Night’s King is capable of. Like she said to Jon, she now sees. Furthermore, it just motivates her to abandon the war with Cersei instead of waiting around for the armistice to go North. Waiting on that wastes time.

As soon as I saw those wights hauling giants chains I knew what was about to happen. I was lulled into a false sense of security. Because the Night’s King hadn’t immediately raised Viserion after killing him, I thought that it wasn’t going to happen. But it did! Seeing Viserion die hurt, but seeing him turned into a wight broke me. I was fine-ish until that happened.

Nothing, not one thing that has happened on Game of Thrones had ever upset me as much as that did. Not Ned’s beheading, not the Red Wedding, not Margaery’s death or Rickon dying or even Hold the Door (and up until this point that was the only sad thing on this show that had managed to make me cry). It took me completely by surprise how utterly devastating that moment was.

Daenerys is going to have to fight one of her babies. Drogon and Rhaegal are going to have to fight their brother. They’ll have to kill him! I’m simultaneously excited for and dreading the moment when Daenerys finds out that Viserion was turned into a wight and she has to do battle with him. If there’s any consolation in this, it’s that we don’t have to worry about who the third head of the dragon/third dragon rider will be (sorry Tyrion), because it’s the Night’s King.

Random thoughts:

  1. Even Tormund is reminding Jon of Mance’s refusal to bend the knee.
  2. You know where she got the letter from Littlefinger.
  3. That wight just sounded the alarm! The storm is coming! White Walkers bring the storm confirmed!
  4. They weren’t that far from Eastwatch.
  5. R.I.P. Thoros of Myr.
  6. Did Beric have to point the sword at the Night’s King and make it so obvious?
  7. She took all three dragons!
  8. Daenerys is so there for Jon and no one else.
  9. Ha! Sandor impaled the wight on Drogon’s spike.
  10. That is a lot of blood…
  11. If Jorah falls off this dragon…
  12. Uncle Benjen!
  13. Ask about his scars Daenerys!
  14. He called her Dany! He bent the knee! KISS HER ALREADY!
  15. Dammit Night’s King!

*Side note: Clegane Bowl confirmed? Sandor is taking the wight to King’s Landing after all…
