The Sinner S01E04 Recap

0

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

The plot thickens!

Finally, we’ve gotten a few answers pertaining to Cora’s missing two months and exactly how she knew J.D. and what he was to her. But, like most – if not all – media in the mystery/thriller genre, learning more only led to more questions. The biggest of which here is: What happened to Maddie?

I’m glad that Cora wasn’t just willing do the sessions with Dr. Chang, but that she was eager. She didn’t run away from learning what happened to her during those two months she can’t remember. That’s pretty admirable.

It was clear that J.D. was the man she was talking about when she told Harry the story about what happened to her on the fourth of July a couple of episodes ago – she did use his name after all – and that he was the one who introduced her to drugs. But that he was the first person she had sex with was surprising, although it really shouldn’t have been given her upbringing.

So far I’ve assumed that her fourth of July outing was the first time she’d ever had any real freedom and thus was the first time she engaged in any “bad behaviours.” Especially anything sexual. As it turns out, Phoebe, the good, bad influence that she was, encouraged Cora to watch porn with her and to get physical with the boy next door.

Again, I really do love that the two sisters were close and I loved seeing Cora take care of Phoebe. Who, because of her illness, was in a unique position to know what was going on with her family. I don’t blame their father for cheating on their mother. He could have at least turned around and gone back upstairs when teenage Cora confronted him about it, however, and sneak back down later rather than just…brush her off.

Anyway, back to Cora and J.D.

Also surprising was the fact that J.D. had a girlfriend at the time that he met Cora; Maddie. We did hear a disembodied female voice telling him to give Cora more drugs, though. I fully suspect that it was Maddie who said that. Their relationship appears to have been completely one-sided in terms of the power dynamic and that J.D. was quite abusive toward Maddie.

I don’t doubt that he perhaps encouraged her to form the relationship with their ex-lover that Harry questioned. If not before it happened, certainly after he found out about it just for the sole purpose of stealing from her. That he – and possibly other – people hunted Maddie and Cora is further evidence to the abusive nature of their relationship and how absolutely twisted he is. Aside from entrapping, drugging and assaulting Cora for two months that is.

Maddie’s relationship with J.D. didn’t last very long after Cora came into the picture because she disappeared that same weekend! I have a theory. Cora was acting like she was trying to save Leah – Frankie’s girlfriend – when she stabbed him and the stabbing is a repetition of one she’d done before. Given the nature of J.D. and Maddie’s relationship, perhaps it was Maddie that Cora was trying to save in the original stabbing.

I also think that it was Maddie’s body that Harry found at the end of the episode. It could be the person that Cora stabbed, but I’m leaning toward Maddie.

Because Cora didn’t go into the water in her second session, I considered the idea that everything she said during was perhaps a lie. But Harry did find the school bus and a body, so perhaps it was true. Given that Dr. Chang said that this kind of this isn’t taken seriously, I’m hoping that the body gives credibility to what Cora remembers during her sessions.

Speaking of Harry, I love the man, but I hate how he treats his wife. He had two marks against him in that regard in this episode. First when he forgot about her miscarriage and how he’d comforted her afterward and when he took her out for a walk in the woods…while he was investigation Cora’s story from her sessions with Dr. Chang. I can respect multi-tasking, but that was just wrong.

He really isn’t putting that much effort into his marriage which, aside from his cheating, seems to be the major problem in his marriage. He says he wants to work on it, but episode after episode we see him not doing that. At this point you have to question if he truly cares about his wife and their marriage. That walk wasn’t about spending time with her, it was about doing his job. And that must be the root of the problem; he loves his job more than his wife.

If he didn’t though, he wouldn’t be trying so hard to get answers for Cora. I really do love how far he is going and how much he is doing for her. There isn’t much of a need, if any at all, for him to continue investigating but he is. You can’t exactly call it a friendship, but I like the bond that is developing between him and Cora and that she still trusts him even though Mason told her not to.

I wish that he’d stop pursuing and looking into J.D on his own. I get why he is; J.D. clearly harmed Cora in some way and he is adamant that he must pay even though he doesn’t know how he harmed Cora. But his persistence is frustrating. This whole venture is in no way smart and is absolutely dangerous. Especially going over to J.D.’s house to try and entrap him selling drugs.

Didn’t he think that J.D.’s wife or girlfriend, whatever she is to him, would tell J.D. about his visit? I didn’t think she’d tell J.D. immediately after he showed up (he was less than convincing with his excuses though), but J.D. was always going to know that he stopped by. Mason’s only antagonising him. I wouldn’t be surprised if J.D. rounded him some of his friends or cronies and went to attack, maybe even kill, Mason. He did all of that for nothing anyway. Caitlin wanted nothing to do with him or his evidence.

Random thoughts:

  1. You are not helping Cora, Mason.
  2. Does teenage Cora even know what an orgasm is?
  3. I love how much Dr. Chang hates doing this.

The Sinner S01E03 Recap

0

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

The more I learn about Cora’s mother, the more I truly despise the woman. She did so much psychological damage to her that is clearly, obviously still affecting her. It’s not even that recently, really, that Cora escaped her grasp. As Harry said. 23 is pretty old to be a runaway. Whatever it is that happened to Cora in those two months, I blame her mother 100%.

Like Cora, I believed that she actually was a heroin addict. However, I never believed that she was a voluntary participant in her addiction. Just because of the dream – or flashback, likely – from early in the episode in which someone stepped on her rib cage, just after a woman’s voice off screen said to give her more. My suspicions were only confirmed by the final shot in the episode of the man in the ski mask.

It seems about clear that on the same night that Cora finally got free of her mother, she was kidnapped, possibly raped, obviously drugged and who knows what else. Drugged to the point that she has zero recollection of what happened to her in those two months that she was missing. Given her upbringing, it would not surprise me that even if she had been conscious enough to recount to her mother the terrible things that happened to her, her mother would have said it was some kind of divine retribution. For running away in the first place or whatever else Cora could have done that she didn’t approve of.

That Cora spent such a long time believing that she was some degenerate drug addict who sold her body for a fix, purely because her mother fed her that story, on top of years – a lifetime – of making her believe that she was some evil person and building within her this complex of inferiority and self hatred…is really frustrating. I do believe the diagnosis of PTSD psychosis that the psychiatrist gave. It obviously stems form what she suffered during those two months. I would argue however that her mother’s treatment of her qualifies as a cause as well.

I am so glad, so very, very glad, that it looks like Cora and Phoebe had a close, loving relationship and that their mother’s treatment of them didn’t drive a wedge between the sisters. I think that Phoebe may just have been the person who convinced Cora to run away. In fact, she was seemingly an atheist from a very young age; disillusioned by her unanswered prayers. While Cora was the highly devout one. Which I find ironic since Cora was the “evil” one. Phoebe lied, without hesitation, to their mother’s face and Cora could not bring herself to be dishonest. I really want to see more of the sisters’ friendship and relationship as they grow up.

I hope that at some point the show goes into why Cora’s mother hates her so much. It cannot be simply because she erroneously believes that Cora’s sin makes Phoebe sicker. It can’t be. There has to be some reason. Or her mother really is just an insane, spiteful woman with no real reason to hate her own child as much as she does.

If only she hadn’t been in the court room at Cora’s hearing. If only she hadn’t turned around and seen her. If only the only person she’d laid eyes on was Mason. She was just about to plead “not guilty!”Or at least take back her guilty plea. Or something. She definitely wasn’t going to plead guilty. Her mother’s raising of her to repent for every little thing is why she plead guilty again. She committed a sin and it doesn’t matter why. She has to be punished for it.

I was simultaneously amused by Harry picking up the produce that Sharon dropped in the supermarket and disappointed that he went after her when he saw her. He’s supposed to be working on his marriage! He said he would stop seeing her! He even had sex with his wife in this episode. I really couldn’t help but wonder if he enjoyed it since he was clearly…please…picking up after Sharon. That’s what he likes and his wife doesn’t do it.

In fact, I got kind of annoyed with Fay for disclosing details of his investigation so cavalierly. Just as casual conversation. I was so glad that Harry stood up for Cora when their guest spoke so disparagingly about her just because she had been a drug addict. I love that Harry is championing Cora and sees her as someone who needs help above all else and is trying his hardest to find the truth of what happened to her.

Mason is trying to do that in his own way as well but I still think he isn’t going about it in the best way. As I said, it will end badly for him. He’s only just begun and he’s already gotten himself arrested. I don’t think that that was the bad ending though. He just went up to J.D. and confronted him.

Just when I thought that we would find out a little something from him, especially how he fits into the picture, Mason tripped himself up and we got nothing. Interestingly, J.D. has a cane and I’m wondering if the reason why has anything to do with Cora and her two missing months.

Random thoughts:

  1. Hey! She got her mattress back.
  2. Of course her mother still hates her, more even, and blames her for her sister’s death.
  3. Who’s Caleb Walker?

Apple iPhone X RANT

0

At its annual press conference Apple unveiled its updated devices for the consumer market. This year it was held at Apple’s spaceship campus; a futuristic campus that was originally envisioned by the company’s founder Steve Jobs, in the brand new Steve Jobs Theatre. Yesterday we got three new iPhones which have the usual faster processors and better camera technology. However, when I say three new iPhones, it was technically one – for all intents and purposes, the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are minuscule upgrades over the previous iPhone 7 and 7 Plus.

It’s true the new iPhone 8 has support for wireless charging technology (finally), and the new A11 Bionic processor that the iPhone X has is certainly a plus, however, that’s it. That’s the selling point for the iPhone 8 and its Plus variant. Can we just take a moment to point out that almost every feature the iPhone X (10?) has, the Plus also carries? It’s got the processor. It’s got the wireless charging. It’s got dual cameras on the back and can do the same new Portrait Lighting effects as the iPhone X. The 5.5-inch LCD screen has True Tone.

After announcing the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, then came the iPhone X, which in my opinion is one of the biggest let downs I have ever seen at an Apple event. Now don’t be mistaken, I personally believe the iPhone X is the most futuristic product I have seen out of the tech giant probably since the original iPhone. The design is sleek, with a small form factor that’s only slightly bigger than the iPhone 8. In real world terms this means the device will be easy to handle, as long as you have a case for it that is. After all, the glass on glass build will not help it in terms of grip or for when you will inevitably drop the device. The edge to edge OLED display is simply beautiful, and since Apple finally upped the resolution for its flagship product iPhone users can finally enjoy full HD content at their fingertips.

The main difference between the iPhone 8 Plus and the X, is the fact that the X has the new facial recognition technology used for unlocking the device, while the Plus still uses Touch ID. And “Animojis”…joy. What does that lovable name represent? The sensors that allow Face ID possible are also used for Animoji, which are moving emoji that mimic your facial expressions. Yes, because  we have all wondered, what does it feel like to spend more money on a product to get more emoji options. While demonstrating the new Face ID feature on stage yesterday at the event, it failed to work as flawlessly as they said it would. Why? Because anyone that knows anything about using your face to unlock phones (Android users of course), knows it never works consistently, its awkward to do and a simple unlock from your finger print is always easier. Yes this new Face ID will get software updates and will work better as time progresses, but as the key selling point of your product it should work perfectly from the get go.

You’re probably wondering what this costs, that’s the punchline here folks. The new iPhone X has a starting price of $999 USD, for unlocking your phone with your face and new emojis. Many of us may think, well it’s Apple, it’s a totally new design for them, so why not? No, that’s a terrible way to think of such a product. It’s that way of thinking that encourages companies to jack up prices for no reason what so ever. Have we as a people reached a situation where the value of a phone is how good a poop emoji can mirror your face? I for one certainly hope that is not the case.

iPhone SE is still a thing?

Why couldn’t Apple simply have launched the new iPhone X as their new iPhone line. Bringing out a small and a Plus version to the X would have made a lot more headlines and absolutely crush most other competition from other manufacturers for the remainder of the year. Now we  have the new iPhone X, and two other devices that we only care about because of the massive price difference. In my opinion, the new iPhone 8 Plus is the better buy, in terms of specs and of course price. Paying $200 USD more just for bragging rights in this economy is not worth the effort, especially after seeing what other manufacturers have to offer.

Outlander S03E01 Recap

0

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

Our favourite time travelling World War 2 nurse and Scottish Highlander are back on our TVs and in our living rooms! Starz’s Outlander has returned to television after a later start than the last season; September versus April. As the saying goes however, “good things come to those who wait.” And the wait was definitely worth it.

Through Jamie’s flashbacks, as he laid dying in a pile of corpses, we got a glimpse into the Battle of Culloden from his perspective. Never was Prince Charles’ incompetence as a leader made so clear as when he, Jamie and the rest of the leaders of their forces were on Culloden moor, under attack, and he did nothing. Even at Jamie’s urging that he give the order to charge. The most he said in the episode concerned a cup.

It wasn’t until he swooped in and saved Jamie that I questioned the whereabouts of Murtagh after the battle. With Rupert saying that he didn’t know where he was and his not being with Jamie during his return to Lally Broch, I’m quite worried about him and I’m hoping that he’s not dead.

The best part of the flashback was when Jamie finally got his revenge on Black Jack Randall. I suppose that in some screwed up way, Jonathan Wolverton ‘Black Jack’ Randall died in the arms of the one he loved? I must say that as much as I abhor the man – I can’t decide if he’s worse than Ramsay Bolton – I will miss his presence on the show. Thankfully, his death doesn’t mean the end of Tobias Menzies’ (one of my favourite members of the cast) departure from the series.

I can’t have been the only one that shouted “Oh come on!” or some such exclamation when the Red Coats found Jamie, Rupert and the rest of the surviving members of the Jacobite army. I was so upset that Rupert died! Just last season he’d escaped death in the Battle of Prestonpans, then to die in the very first episode of this season. The one silver lining was that Murtagh wasn’t there to get executed like the rest of them. I’d rather he’d have died in the Battle of Culloden if he’s dead at all.

Jamie’s rescue was very unexpected. I thought that Rupert would be the one to save him. John William Grey was mentioned in the recap at the beginning of the episode, but I thought nothing of it. It does feel like a plot convenience that his elder brother just so happened to be in charge of the Red Coats that found them and was such an honourable man that he wouldn’t deign to besmirch his family’s name by killing Jamie.

That being said, I was still relieved that Jamie had been saved. I wasn’t afraid for him in this particular scene (I was when he woke up on the moor and the Red Coats were going around executing dying Jacobites), but still. Also, it was kind of  hilarious how much he insisted on being killed when he was so dutifully being ignored.

I think that not having seen Claire interact with the world as it was in her own time made the sexism she faced all the more startling and infuriating. You’d think that she’d have had it worse when she was in the 18th century, but she didn’t. Then again, she wasn’t exactly in the same kind of situations.

What was perhaps most shocking was that Claire just swallowed what Frank’s boss said about her place being a domestic housewife and mother, going so far as to smile and agree with it. She’s usually so feisty and speaks her mind. I suppose she held back so as to not get Frank fired and perhaps because she was so melancholy; she couldn’t find the strength or will to fight back as she usually did.

I should have known that her and Frank’s happy relationship was too good to be true. That fight between them was intense! Frank had a point though, that they needed to talk about their feelings and their relationship if Claire intended to stay with him. He wants a real relationship and family with her, but she won’t let him love her. On the other hand, he knows that she’s deeply in love with someone else and carrying his child. He can’t expect her to just get over Jamie. They’re both, in some ways, being insensitive to the others’ feelings.

He did give her a choice to stay or leave him, but as we know from last season and the previews for this one, that she stayed. It was hard to see, given everything that was brought up during their fight, how they would or could have stayed together for twenty years and survived it…until the birth of Brianna.

Can we talk about how utterly disturbing that birth scene was? It wasn’t just how sexist the doctor was being, but how he just disregarded Claire’s request that she not be put under as she gave birth. It’s hard to believe that in the 1940’s – really, not that long ago – that patients’ wishes weren’t respected, especially in such a situation. He robbed her of participating in the birth of her child.

She had absolutely no agency or autonomy in that scene. No say in what happened to her body. No choice in how her child was delivered. No opportunity to be consulted in case there were complications (which most definitely would have fallen to Frank). There were so many layers of wrong there.

In any case, Brianna’s arrival granted Claire and Frank their chance to start over and find some semblance of happiness in their relationship. Maybe even love. It was such a sweet and tender moment that gave me hope for how things would turn out for them. Then the nurse had to go and ruin it by asking about her red hair.

Random thoughts:

  1. I love how the opening changes slightly every season.
  2. Is Claire having a hard time adjusting to modern luxuries?
  3. I don’t know if I like Claire’s neighbour or not.
  4. R.I.P Rupert.
  5. Frank’s writing the letter Brianna found last season!
  6. Keeping the father out of the birthing room is such a strange practice.

Outlander airs Sundays at 10 on Starz.

Keppeki Danshi! Aoyama-kun (Clean Freak! Aoyama-kun) E09 Recap

Kae-Tan desu~ (*≧▽≦)

Miwa (aka the team’s Coach) watches a soccer anime with a protagonist that she admires greatly and is inspired to hold a training camp. Zaizen offers them the summer villa to hold the camp which revves everyone up except for aoyama since that would be the pinnacle of contact.

We switch to night at Zaizen’s home when his father gets back from work. This is the first time we see his father who comes across as a very influential man since he can just pick the phone and call the prime minister to change the rules of soccer by making the goals bigger. In his case, money talks. We also meet Zaizen’s little sisten Karin who is indiefinitely coddled by their father, despite him seeming standoffish at first glance.

The day of the training camp arrives and at the request of Coach Miwa, Karin arranges not just their club, but for ALL the clubs to go on the trip. On arriving, Aoyama is placed in his own exquisitely clean white room in a hotel, while the others sleep in a run-down Japanese building. Zaizen apparently had always wanted to try sleeping in this type of building, much to the dismay of the others.

Practice on the beach begins and I am genuinely surprised to still see Umeya on the soccer team. When Ishikawa (the captain) twists his ankle, Moka takes an opportunity to step in his place. While she does surprise all in attendance by dribbling past everyone, including Aoyama, she also attempts to commit a malicia by pretending she was fouled. Aoyama doesn’t approve of this and while he does let her know that, he also compliments her dribbling skills which makes Moka happy.

In the end, we find out that although it was an artificial environment designed by the Zaizen group and some mishaps with meal time and others occur, everyone starts to enjoy the outing, especially the test of courage. Aoyama just cleaned the haunted hospital throughout the whole ordeal lol.

See you all next week for episode 10 entitled: “Aoyama-kun Has Many Secrets”

Why we’re watching: The first season of Stranger Things more or less came out of nowhere and immediately impressed audiences and took the world by storm. This series is the definition of an overnight success. Fans have been clamouring for more since it’s first eight episodes hit Netflix last year and we’re finally getting more. We get to see more of the Upside Down, the lasting effects of Will’s time there and Eleven is back! Most intriguing is the spider creature; what it is, what it wants and how it will come into play. Why we’re watching: As I stated in my Favourite SDCC Trailers article: “Fox hadn’t been doing too well with their X-Men films until we got Deadpool and Logan. They hit it out of the park with Legion on the TV side of things as well. Fox seems to be on an upward swing with this franchise and The Gifted seems to be continuing that trend. It looks a whole lot better than the other upcoming Marvel TV series on Freeform, Cloak and Dagger, at the very least. For all I know the series could turn out to be pretty bad, but the trailer convinced me to give it a chance.”

TV Recap Preview – Outlander

Premiere date: September 10th

Network: Starz

Starring: Caitriona Balfe, Sam Heughan, Duncan Lacroix, Tobias Menzies, Sophie Skelton, Romann Berrux, César Domboy, Laura Donnelly and Steven Cree.

Synopsis: Season 3 of “Outlander” picks up with Jamie and Claire, separated by continents and centuries, as they attempt life apart, each haunted by their lost love. Can they find their way back to each other? – Starz.

Why we’re watching: BECAUSE IT’S OUTLANDER! One of the best shows on television right now, up there with Game of Thrones (yea, I said it). The epic, time-travelling romance of Claire Beauchamp-Randall-Fraser and James Alexander Malcolm Mackenzie Fraser is amazingly compelling. Us fans love their undying love for one another. With the cliffhanger of an ending in season two that saw Claire on the verge of returning to the past and reuniting with her beloved Jamie and the promise of seeing what happened in the pair’s lives in the twenty years they were apart, this looks to be a promising season indeed.

Keppeki Danshi! Aoyama-kun (Clean Freak! Aoyama-kun) E08 Recap

Kae-Tan desu~ (*≧▽≦)

Tsubasa Umeya is a top-class judo competitor….oh and he has a super crush on Moka. So much so that he quits the judo team and joins the soccer team in order to get closer to her. Everyone realizes it except for Moka herself since she is wrapped up in her world of Aoyama.

Umeya uses his place on the team to assist Moka in any that way that he can, although he isn’t very vocal about his feelings towards her. When Umeya questions her feelings for him, he decides to help her get closer to him. He wants nothing more than Moka to be happy so he invites Aoyama to the zoo under the pretense of attending a cat festival and all goes well at first until they run into Odagiri which makes things super awkward for Moka, depleting her confidence even more than it already was.

When Umeya sets Aoyama and Moka on a boat together, Moka is able to speak to Aoyama directly, even though she only tells him that she had fun. This was kind of short, because nothing else really happened in this episode, but I feel sorry for Umeya and I hope he pulls through towards the end.

Also the judo coach is weird. He spent the entire episode stalking Umeya wherever he went…….

See you all next week for episode 9 entitled: “Miwa-chan Wants to Do a Training Camp”
