No Regrets – This Tune Brown Teatime Sweet

Brown Tea Times! Sweeet!

This is the longest I’ve ever taken to write a review, which doesn’t really make sense because technically I already reviewed this song. As I thought when I first heard the song – and I continue to think now – this song so hard! Lennox went off on the “slow wine with yuh natural queen” vibes. This song could easily fit in a tale about a real, real rasta couple making their unity.

What really draws me into this song is the production. Just the way that the chants come in to give me a vibe straight from Disney’s The Lion King. The spacious drums commence the build of the music and the way the strings just ease in…LOOK! I was hooked from the start. My immediate thought was: “This would be a good song to slow dance to yuh girl with when the lights turn on at 4:00 am in the dance.” And I know when y’all hear it you get the vibe. The alternative is you in your kitchen a morning, making smoothies and playing up with your woman and making her laugh. I’m sorry but it’s now law. These are the only two things you can do when this song is playing. Or do whatever you want to, I’m not going to sue you.

The lyrics of the song are nice, but I was personally way more moved by the melody. If I’m being honest, the only words that really stayed with me were: “Brown tea times…yum.” It’s not that the background chants are overpowering, I just personally prefer to hear them? If that makes any sense. Just the way everything comes together really makes this work for me.

All in all, as I’ve said before, this song hard. It’s BEEN hard. This review is late, but it’s not too late. Head over to Spotify, YouTube, call a radio station, tell a DJ friend to get it. Do SOMETHING to listen to this song. Trust me It is VIBES!

AnimeKon’s TerraNautica Saga Begins

0

After celebrating its first decade of success last year, AnimeKon enters its eleventh year with 2020’s “The Invasion”, the first part of an epic five year, five convention spanning story called The TerraNautica Saga

Much in the same way that AnimeKon announced the themes for its 2017, 2018 and 2019 editions back in 2016, they today did the same for their themes from 2020 through to 2024. Following “The Invasion” will be, “Clash of the Titans”, “League of Champions”, “Ascension” and “Resurgence”. AnimeKon co-Founder Omar Kennedy described the TerraNautica Saga as “the next evolutionary step” and “a new universe [of] opportunities for vendors, sponsors and the actual patrons to become involved in this world…called TerraNautica.”

“TerraNautica, the continent, is shaped like the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre with the “Terra” – the land part – being the actual convention centre and the “Nautica” being the car park on the outside. Nautica being the underwater aspect of the continent…There are two peoples; the Terraphs and the Nauticans. They were all once one [people] but there was a big cataclysm…half of the population sank beneath the waves – they are now water breathers – and the regular air breathers…[are] on [land].”

The saga will follow three main characters “as they face off against the forces of darkness as they try to overwhelm their continent of TerraNautica.” Each of the five conventions that will make up the saga will feature different parts of the story, which will be exemplified through games, events and even the tickets. There are also plans to incorporate cosplayers dressed as the main characters into the convention after movie.

In the social media announcement of the saga the story was summed up thusly:

“Two old threats, remnants of The Second Age of Men, have returned to claim what was left of humanity.

With all of the lesser gods who stood watch over The Last Age gone, humanity (the Terraphs, the Nauticans, and their half-breed offspring) must work closely together to even hope to stand against the threats which have risen to pull them into the final night.”

Kennedy is also the author of The Soltreian Chronicles, the first volume of which was released in April of 2014. He revealed that volumes two and three will be launched at this year’s AnimeKon, along with The Sentinels of Life: The Chariot of Peacock Island – another novel on which he collaborated with Shannon Kennedy, better known as Shasam Cosplay, whose Cotton Candy Girlz line of products the book is based on. The stories of these novels will be a part of the TerraNautica Saga.

Barbados Independent Film Festival Underway

0

The fourth edition of the Barbados Independent Film Festival (BIFF) kicked off last night with its opening ceremony at the Walled Garden Theatre of the Barbados Museum and Historical Society and the premiere of Marcia Weekes’ (creator of Barrow: Freedom Fighter, Vigilante – The Crossing and Chrissy) latest film, Joseph. The film, which was inspired by a trip Weekes took to Rwanada, tells the story of the titular Jamaican doctor’s journey to Ghana in pursuit of discovering his African roots.

In their addresses, co-founders of BIFF Sir Trevor Carmichael and Jennifer Smith Bent welcomed those in attendance and thanked them for their continued support of the festival.

Carmichael described it as “inspirational”, “encouraging” and “an endorsement of the quality and content of the previous three festivals”, with Smith stating: “Thank you for the purchase of your tickets, the talent of our wonderful filmmakers, performers, your sponsorship and of course your valuable time.”

Minister of Creative Economy, Culture and Sports, Hon. John King, gave a speech following the screening of Joseph in which he noted that the main character of the film, Joseph King, shares a name with one of the first free slaves in Barbados to own land. He encouraged visiting the monument in Rock Hall Village, on which this former slaves’ name can be viewed.

King recounted meeting with Weekes, who approached him about her idea for the film, at a point in time when the ministry had already started engaging with Ghana through soca artiste Alison Hinds, who stars in the film. He went on to say of Joseph:

“…to see this come to fruition and have us not only do it by ourselves, but to have our wonderful neighbours, in Jamaica [and Ghana involved]…I think this is what being human is all about; being able to do things together despite all of the differences, despite all of the things that separate us as human beings. This thing that we call art binds us together like nothing else.”

Of the experience filming in Ghana, Hinds and fellow musical artist Shontelle Layne, spoke to the similarities of life and culture in Ghana to that of Barbados.

Layne commented that the music and the food were exactly the same as that in Barbados and that being in Ghana gave her an understanding of where many of the things that Barbadians do came from. Hinds reaffirmed Layne’s statements and added:

“…to travel so far and understand that there was 400 years of slavery…and everything was tried to break our ancestors, to separate them, to destroy their whole way of life and to understand that in spite of all of that…it is in our DNA. There is no other way to explain it.”

BIFF continues every day until the 19th with screenings and master classes. Full details can be found on their Facebook Page.

Joseph is now showing at Olympus Theatres.

Jus-Jay Wins First Ever Red Bull 3Style Caribbean Finals, Advances To World Finals

0

Local DJ Justin “Jus-Jay” King emerged the winner of the first ever Caribbean Finals of the Red Bull 3Style World DJ Championships. Celebrating its tenth year, it is the world’s biggest DJ competition. At last night’s finals, held in Panama, King competed against other DJs from the region – DJ Spinn (Jamaica), DJ Quest (Antigua), Untouchable Sounds (Trinidad and Tobago), DartZero75 (Venezuela) and Maripaez (Venezuela).

This is the second time that King has entered the competition, having also made it to the World Finals in 2018 as one of three wild card entrants.

King had expressed doubts earlier in the night due to “a major technical issue”, stating “I probably don’t have a chance at this stage.” He described his win as a “turn of events.” King has advanced to the World Finals of the competition, which will take place in Moscow, Russia in April.

Competitors are tasked with playing a 15-minute set that incorporates at least three genres of music. They are scored points based on Originality (40%), Skill (25%), Music Selection (20%) and Crowd Response (15%).

Fellow Barbadian DJ, DJ Puffy, became the first Barbadian and Caribbean person to win the Red Bull 3Style World DJ Championships in 2016.

MEDIA RELEASE: Children Want To Take Active Role In Society

0

The Joy to Your World Essay Contest winners were announced last Sunday evening at the Searocks Dome Joy! family event, kicking..

In this Christmas season of giving, leading up to Sunday’s event, in a campaign to encourage young children to have empathy, to be generous and to help others, there was a Joy To Your World Essay Competition.  All of the children were honoured at the event, each receiving gift bags provided by the U.S. Embassy.  Three students were selected to receive special recognition and additional prizes including a tablet and Chefette Party.

[vc_images_carousel images=”8297,8296″ img_size=”full” onclick=”link_no” autoplay=”yes” wrap=”yes”]

10 year old Doneko Layne wishes that the Christmas Joy was expressed all through the year and that he knows it’s possible if people would be intentional and just make it happen.  His simple rules to achieve this include: encouraging  others by telling them positive things; helping someone in need; sharing, controlling anger.

10 year old Negus Harvey, whose mother Thea Beckles said she is raising in the church, spoke about wishing that he had superpowers where he would be able to stop everything that robs the word of Joy instantly. He recognizes that even without the super powers he can make a difference and wants to encourage his classmates to do the same, to stay out of fights, help the elderly and be more loving.

13 year old Natanya Weekes who won in 2018 was also honoured as she continues her good works in her family, school and community.  Her Aunt Paula Pitt said “I’ve watched her grow from a little girl – she has the right grounding through her parents and grandparents as to right and wrong and ethics.  It seems these values don’t exist anymore so it’s important when we do see them, especially in children, that we encourage and celebrate them.”

Organizer Ebonnie Rowe said “While I find it so heartwarming to read the essays, I’m also heartbroken to see how aware these children are of everything happening around them, some of them expressing fear of being victims of violence and just wanting to feel safe and for it all to come to an end. At this age they should be playing and not weighed down with stress and worry.  I’m so inspired by the children’s commitment to being good citizens and positively impacting the lives of others.  Along with issues regarding violence, school bullying, they also wrote about the environment and helping the elderly.”

“These exceptional children are also a testament to their parents and the good values they are being brought up with. These are the young people who will shape the future of the nation, and if they continue on this path we will be in very good hands.”

Sponsor Ian Donovan of  Massy Properties, Dome Mall Kensington Mall who attends every year said “anything to do with highlighting the positive things children are doing we are happy to be a part of.”

Joy! proved to be a fun family afternoon featuring free face painting by Faces of Colour, Read for Life Children’s Circle, a drum circle, pony rides, ending with a concert featuring the Ascending Stars, Faith Callender, Dario Dvon and Anna Greenidge

This is the 2nd year Faith is donating her time and said “I think Joy! Is a great initiative bringing children together and allowing them to express in words how they want to share joy in their world and what they would like to see.   I believe in this and love the whole idea so anything I can do to assist I’m there.”

MEDIA RELEASE: Honey Jam Artists Plead For End To Violence In Powerful Finale Performance

0

WE SAY NO MORE!  That was the rallying cry at the Honey Jam Concert finale’s stirring rendition of Minister John King’s classic “How Many More”.  Led by Larix, Rhea Layne and Sirrah, the performance began with beautiful stirring melodies, then all of the artists who performed that night joined them on stage, acting as a choir passionately insisting that we must not tolerate the level of violence we’re seeing in Barbados, declaring with fists in the air “We Say No More!”

In attendance was legendary video and feature film director Director X who spearheaded a movement called Operation Prefrontal Cortex, to promote meditation and mindfulness as a means of reducing violence by offering coping skills to quell the urge to lash out.  X is a decades long personal friend of producer Ebonnie Rowe, who met him at the age of 17 when he was involved in her mentor programme in Toronto for at risk Black youth called “Each One, Teach One.”

The finale was only one out of 15 dynamic performances that wowed the crowd at the 9th annual Honey Jam Fundraising Concert at the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination. The concert raises money for a non-profit artist development program.

Everything kicked off at 6:00 with a blue carpet mixer in honour of Independence featuring art by Alanis Forde, music by DJ Diamond and lots of door prizes. Once the show started promptly at 7:00, the audience was treated to an eclectic mix of dynamic live performances.

Host Caroline Reid said “it was only appropriate that with the show so close to Independence that it take place in a venue named after Errol Barrow, the father of Independence.”  This was more of an unplugged Honey Jam, more intimate, up close and personal.  The artists voices filled the room as act after act took the audience on a moving musical journey that had their wrapt attention.

In marking their 9th year, their first sponsor Blueprint Creative, who were the ones who encouraged the idea to start Honey Jam in Barbados, sent a “love letter to Honey Jam’ read onstage declaring their long time support before Ebonnie Rowe was introduced.

Producer Rowe was emotional as she spoke of her deep appreciation for the support they have received over the years and that she felt her work with the young artists was the “light of her life”.  She went on to say that she didn’t want this to be the last Honey Jam season but in these difficult economic times it was becoming increasingly challenging to sustain the initiative which provides mentoring, networking, educational, promotional and performance opportunities to emerging young artists and musicians.
