Graydon Sealy Secondary School Model Search 2017

Ishan Wilson and Sheda Bryan went home the winners of the Graydon Sealy Secondary School Model Search, which took place last Saturday, April 1st at the school. Wilson was the clear winner of the night and had virtually no competition. The only contestant who came close to challenging him was Jalen Batson. Wilson also took home a special award for the “contestant who made it against the odds.” His mother received a special award as well. As for the girls, it was pretty much a toss up; none of them really stood out as a front runner. The first runners up were Tara-Ann Clarke and Kiros Graham. The second runners up were Janiya Hart and Jalen Batson.

Another winner of the night was Neesha Welch, who beat out Rachel Walcott and Anika Lewis Crawford in the Icon Queens of Song competition.

To say that this year’s Graydon Sealy Secondary School Model Search was underwhelming would be an understatement. The contestants – fifteen of them; ten girls and five boys – were stiff and lifeless in their dancing during the opening number. When it came to their introductory statements, almost all of them stumbled and forgot what they were meant to say, many of them not recovering well and one student altogether giving up and walking away from the microphone. It was a very rough start and the students seemed unprepared.

The theme of the night was “Icons” and the fifteen contestants represented various persons of note, such as Michael Jackson, Rihanna, DJ Puffy, Queen Nefertiti, Kobe Bryant, Josephine Baker, Maya Angelou, Michelle Obama and Malcolm X. The contestants competed in three sections: School Pride, Icons Costume and Haute Couture/Avant Garde.

The fashion on display during the show was, for the most part, very good  and the contestants were stylish indeed. However, some of the contestants missed the mark in the Icons Costume and Haute Couture/Avant Garde section.

In the Haute Couture/Avant Garde section they dressed up as the icons they were representing and most of them were not immediately recognisable. Only four of them were; Naomi Norville as Billie Holiday, Kelly-Ann Byer as Michael Jackson, Sheda Bryan as Naomi Campbell and and Tara-Ann Clarke as Queen Nefertiti.  Arguably, Ishan Wilson and Jalen Batson were identifiable as Kobe Bryan and Stephan Curry, respectively, but only because the players’ names were on the backs of their jerseys. Despite the contestants stating who their icons were in the beginning, by the time this section rolled around, that had been forgotten.

As with the Lodge School Model Search 2017, in the Haute Couture/Avant Garde section the contestants wore clothing made from recycled materials; newspaper, bubble wrap, bottle caps, CD’s, garbage bags, foil etc. Britney Gunning’s bottle cap dress, Tara-Ann Clarke’s garbage bag dress, Kaneil Cummins and Sheda Bryan’s CD dresses and Kaisha Wilkinson’s soda can dress were all in the spirit of haute couture fashion, but none of the contestants came close to avant garde. Although fashionable, the silhouettes and styles were safe and not out of the box (which is the essence of avant garde fashion).

The lowest point of the pageant was the entertainment portion when the judges went off to tabulate their scores. Not only was it clear that the organisers did not have much of a plan as to what to fill that time with, but the energetic dance performance by dance group Inside Outt deteriorated into what was essentially a skin out competition, which featured two young girls who could not have even been ten years old. Another low point was when contestant Hakeem Maynard halted his entrance during the Icons Costume section and, in an undignified move, took up a microphone and admonished the audience for their silence and demanded he be applauded as he graced the stage.

There was also a slight hick up at the start of the prize giving ceremony; the contestants of the Icon Queens of Song competition were not ready to go on stage. The proceedings were halted in order for them to take their places. Other than that, it went off smoothly and given the good job she did as M.C. here, it’s a wonder why Stephanie F. Chase did not M.C. the entire event.

What’s With Drakes Jamaican Accent?

0

“More tune for yuh head top so watch how yuh speak on my name yuh know?”

I was in between minds about writing an actual review for this album because, the way I write reviews, it would’ve been way too long. Also, I’m shamelessly biased. So I decided to take a different approach whilst still commenting on Drake.

What’s with home boy’s accent? Why Drake speaking patois? It’s actually a really easy question to answer: West Indian culture is STRONG.

I’m 90% sure everyone reading this has a relative overseas. That relative is arguably more Caribbean than you. I’m not speaking about the Bajans that travel for 4 days to Miami and come back inexplicably speaking with a British accent. I mean the West Indians that went to New York in 1989 for a vacation and just refuse to come back. Just over there spreading seed and most importantly CULTURE. These countries have extremely large, vibrant and boisterous West Indian communities. And who’s the most boisterous of us all? “Dem Reggae boys.” Jamaicans come ready built with their own branch of English, so far gone from the source, it has its own name; Jamaican patois.

[Spot the Jamaican]
Drake’s hometown of Toronto is a potluck of different cultures with many different communities, which of course includes West Indian communities. It’s safe to assume he grew up experiencing this culture. Buying Anchor cheese from a West Indian store, being told there’s no more plantain when trying to order from a Jamaican food woman or even sighing when the West Indies dropped a ball in a cricket match. Okay, maybe none of that actually happened. But a lot of Jamaican culture from Toronto’s West Indian communities makes its way into the mainstream or popular culture. After experiencing this, nothing was the same for Drake.

Some speculate that this is just a recent move for Drake to capitalize or coat ride Caribbean music. However, he’s far from the first or only artist to do so. Even The Notorious BIG can be found spitting Caribbean dialect, notably in his track “Warning” with the lyric:

“Cocked it, extra clips in my pocket,

So I can reload and explode on yuh r***hole”

Canadian Newcomer Tory Lanez also embraces the West Indian culture, with many of his most popular hits sampling retro dancehall beats and melodies.

Europe is also famous for Caribbean influences in its music. Not even in it’s Hip Hop spectrum. A notable example is the Dutch DJ team “The Partysquad.” Many of this team’s songs feature dancehall reminiscent lyrics over some very heavy trap and hardstyle beats.

When all is said and done, it’s very easy to trace Drake’s Jamaican accent to his roots in Toronto growing up with all of these different cultures. As for his other accents? Nah. He teef dem. He ain got no British fam. Drake cut the crap!!!

Slashsoundz Top 5 Misheard Lyrics

0

Don’t you hate it when you’re enjoying yourself, singing that new favorite song and the artist has the audacity to sing the wrong lyrics? How could you? This meant something to me. To us! You just had to come and ruin it. With words that…that…make sense! I’m looking at you, Sean Paul! What do you mean you’re actually saying words?

Dramatics aside, this is a list of what I find to be the funniest misheard lyrics ever. I won’t lie, this list is solely inspired by the Meryl Streep memes. But in my old YouTube days, I loved the dumb misheard lyric videos animated with basic Macromedia Flash. It also goes without saying that this is a personal list. Comprising mainly mix-ups from me, my friends and my family.

Honorable Mentions:

1. “Empire State of Mind” – Jay-Z ft. Alicia Keys

What it actually is: “In New York/Concrete jungle where dreams are made of…”

What it sounds like: “In New York/I’ve become a wet dream, tomato…”

This isn’t a personal entry, more of a viral sensation that you can’t unhear when you hear it.

2. “Lewwe Ball Up” – Level Vibes

What it actually is: “Sugar looka tamarind/Lewwe ball up”

What it sounds like(to my one friend Shakira): “Sugar looka salt bread/Lewwe ball up”

Through the enchanting elixir of alcohol, we may find ourselves spewing false information. Jesus has to tell me that this verbal typo wasn’t just Shakira not knowing the lyrics. How rough was life for my poor dear Shakira that sugar and salt bread comprised of a meal? I mean, at least a salt bread is round? Still, no Shakira. No forward. None.

2. “Calling In Sick” – King Bubba

What it actually is: “I calling in sick/This is too much vibes to miss”

What it sounds like (to my one friend Shakira): “I calling in sick/This is too much vitamins

#5. “The Christmas Song” – Luther Vandross (1992).

What it actually is: “A turkey and some mistletoe “

What it sounds like (to my sister): “A turkey is a mistletoe”

This probably isn’t even worth being this high on the list; it’s not that funny to the general public. One magical Christmas, about 3 or 4 years ago, my mother, little sister and I were hanging up the Christmas lights, listening to the soothing sounds of Nat King Cole and Luther Vandross. Of course, The Christmas Song comes on and my sweet little sister, my darling little sister, singing in a sweet voice quite unlike her own, proceeds to sing: “Everybody knows, a turkey IS a mistletoe.” And your boy died.  RIP Kofi Jones. Images of my sister all grown up, hanging up turkeys in the doorways of her office’s Christmas party. My poor little sister waiting for her husband under the turkey to steal a kiss one future Christmas night. Forgive my active imagination, but that scenario is infinitely hilarious.

#4. “Chandelier” – Sia (2014).

What it actually is: “I want to swing from the chandelier”

What it sounds like: “I want to swing from the chimney

This is by far my favorite request of 2017, if not all time. God bless her brave, brave soul to approach me and say: “I wan hear da song daz say ‘I want to swing from the chimney.'” I didn’t mean to laugh in her face but what warped version of a Santa Claus story did she grow up with? Who hurt Santa Claus that homeboy swinging from a chimney? He fell on hard times and working the chimney for money? I need answers!

I can’t blame her really, though, even googling this phrase brings up the same song. So clearly she wasn’t alone in this mistake. And I guess it kinda does sound similar, albeit hilarious.

#3. “Tom Ford” – Jay Z (2013).

What it actually is: “Tom Ford”

What it sounds like: Come Forward

Once again, not funny to the general public, but hilarious to me. And this is my list, so fight me. We all have that friend that’s all dance savvy. You know, kind of almost still in the Passa Passa craze, lives in a musical, just always dancing. Trust me this set up is needed. So “Tom Ford” plays, and home girl’s doing this vigorous walk forward and singing ever so sweetly, “come forward.” No baby what is you doing. I don’t think Jay-Z could dance if he tried. Homeboy just paying homage to a designer. I lowkey wish you were right, though. Lowkey.

#2. “Differentology” – Bunji Garlin (2012).

What it actually is: “And the crowd now waking up”

What it sounds like: “And the cow now waking up”

In all seriousness, imagine the opening scene of the movie The Lion King with these misheard lyrics. Magical isn’t it? I guess that’s what was running through the head of this poor, poor Trinidadian. People went to town on memes about this. With an entire parody song being made following the incident. My favorite thing about this mess would have to be the people who continued the lyrics with:

“Look how the sun now raising up,

And the cow now waking up,

The atmosphere has flies.”

If I remember this clearly, the perpetrator defended her stance throughout this entire ordeal, INSISTING that Bunji was for some reason or the other singing about a cow waking up on carnival day ready for the road.

#1.  Sean Paul. Just Sean Paul on a whole.

What it actually is: Words I guess.

What it sounds like: ???

I couldn’t pick just one. I really tried. Making fun of Sean Paul lyrics is one of the first internet trends that I remember. For literally YEARS I have had zero idea what he says in the beginning of “Temperature”. But it sounds like “The gal dems kill all tea” and my gran drinks tea, and she’s a girl so…those are the actual lyrics. It’s just a combination of patois and sheer speed Sean Paul chants that cause this phenomenon.

“Just gimme the light and pass the dro

Baka laka laka la mo”

“Just gimme the cheese and mek we smoke it yo”

Just to name a couple of probably actual Sean Paul lyrics.

Have any suggestions for a theme? Want to dispute or add to my list? Want a transition track besides “All I Do Is Win?” Email me at kofi.jones7@gmail.com with SlashSoundz Top 5 in the subject line.

Girls S06E08 Recap

0

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

This episode was pretty hard to watch. Not just because of Jessa’s rapid downward spiral into her old ways and the pain she experienced, or the heart-wrenching ending between Adam and Hannah, but because it was obvious that their reunion wouldn’t last.

I was taken aback by Adam announcing to Jessa that he wanted to go back to Hannah and raise her baby with her. It kind of came out of nowhere and given what transpired between him, Jessa and Hannah, he had some nerve to want to get back into her life that way. I was surprised that Hannah didn’t react terribly to his suggestion and just went along with it; easily settling back into the swing of things. They even had sex! Which struck me as outrageous when it happened. It was like the second Adam went to Hannah, he forgot Jessa. Until Hannah brought her up when she asked what sex with her was like.

I have to say that seeing the two of them together as a lovey-dovey couple was cute and sweet. Especially when Adam spoke to her belly, having an imaginary dialogue with her baby as she stroked his hair. Later on in the episode as well when they went baby shopping and when she shared her fears of motherhood with him. Adam was the partner she needs during her pregnancy and after. The two make an amazing couple when they work and the image of what could be was damn near perfect. A little too perfect.

As was made clear at the beginning of the episode in her conversation with Elijah, Hannah was still reeling from her phone call with Paul-Louis and the fact that he didn’t want to be involved in the rearing of their child. She was at an emotional low. Then in swept Adam and he was perfectly ready and willing to take on the duties and responsibilities of fatherhood. He himself likely being in an emotional state because he had just finished recreating his relationship with Hannah on film. They were both in a place where the idea of something was very attractive to them.

I wanted them to rekindle their relationship. This was what I wanted. But there was something off about it the entire time and it just didn’t feel right. At no point did I feel like it would have worked out for them. The first crack that showed was when they were baby shopping and Hannah spaced out. It crumbled entirely when they were at the diner and Adam brought up marriage. That was when the fantasy of it all went too far.

The two of them got swept up in old feelings and the familiarity of their relationship. It was evident from the beginning that they’d come to realise that it wasn’t what they really wanted. It must have been especially hard for Hannah since she got a taste of what life could be like if she had a real partner in this. Now she knows she’s well and truly alone (although she does have Elijah but he doesn’t fit the role very well).

In my opinion Adam didn’t have as much to lose as Hannah. The hard part for him was crawling back to Jessa. She looked decidedly triumphant when he went back to her. I imagine she thought she’d won and that she got Adam once again. A few episodes ago, she seemed really competitive about her relationship with Adam as compared to Adam’s relationship with Hannah. Which is sad. As would be her feeling like she won.

It was nice to see Shoshanna for once. She’s been notably absent from the series so far this season and then very quickly disappeared once again during this episode. When we see her it’s very brief and only ever with Ray. Speaking of, I like that he’s moving on from Marnie to someone who is more suited to him. As annoying as Abigail was when she first appeared in the episode, the chemistry between her and Ray was magnetic and it was adorable seeing the two of them get along so well. She really brightened up his life.

Random thoughts:

  1. Hannah: “I’m so confused.” Me too.
  2. Jessa’s taking this really hard.
  3. Where did Shoshanna go?

Girls airs Sundays at 10 PM on HBO.

Grimm S06E13 [SERIES FINALE] Recap

0

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

That was an incredibly satisfying ending to a show that started off not so good, but eventually found it’s footing and became something great. Grimm was not a perfect show, it definitely wasn’t this season and I had my problems with how some of the story lines unfolded. But this episode was perfect. There could not have been a better final episode for this show.

Everybody died. Absolutely everyone. After Monroe and Rosalee went down, I very nearly stopped watching despite knowing that everyone would come back to life by the end. There was never any doubt about that. It’s a testament to how amazing this episode was that even though I knew they wouldn’t stay dead, I had such powerful reactions to their deaths. I was still outraged and upset and cursing the writers for killing them off.

When Zerstörer arrived in the real world and was after Nick instead of Diana, I had a feeling that the stick was how it knew where he was. For this entire episode I was questioning why Zerstörer kept sparing Nick’s life. I thought that the stick was actively protecting Nick with it’s magic. Which, coupled with the fact that it couldn’t go to “the other place”, made me question whether or not Zerstörer could actually take it and use it.

And he couldn’t. Because he needed Nick to give it to him willingly. Hence the death of every character we loved – well, except Renard. By taking away everything from Nick and promising to give them back, Zerstörer created the conditions for Nick to hand over the stick. Which, I understand that he was emotional and grieving and not thinking straight, but if he’d handed it over everyone would still end up dead anyway. It’s called “The End of the World.” No one’s going to survive that.

We all knew that the final battle would take place at the cabin; that it would all end where it all began. I didn’t expect Kelly Sr. (Is it still senior if it’s a woman?) and Aunt Marie to show up. That was a lovely little touch that was very heart warming. He finally got to fight alongside the women that passed this on to him. I did think that it would come down to Nick and Trubel taking on Zerstörer (but then she died) when I heard the “one’s own blood” line. The potion they came up with was a very good idea, but I never thought that it would work.

The finale battle was a tad anticlimactic. Nick, Trubel, Kelly Sr. and Aunt Marie got rid of Zerstörer pretty quickly, but it was four against one. I was waiting for Nick to get up and use the completed staff to heal everyone. It took him so long to realise that he could. When the portal opened and he got sucked in I was very confused – and thought for a moment that maybe everyone really was dead – and I was even more confused when he came out of the mirror with Eve again. I thought that perhaps he time travelled, but as it turned out, he never left “the other place” to begin with.

I experienced so many emotions watching this episode. I was simultaneously exhausted and energized by the end. It was a wonderful episode and with that ending…is it too much to ask for a spin-off?

Random thoughts:

  1. Why won’t the stick work on Hank and Wu?!
  2. Trubel: “They can’t be dead.” I know right!
  3. Remember when we said that we should keep Rosalee out of this since she’s pregnant?
  4. Et tu Juliette?! I mean Eve.
  5. Why is everybody dying?!
  6. Diana WTF! What are you doing?!
  7. Of course Renard died.
  8. Adalind too?! Seriously?! Just spare Monroe and Rosalee.
  9. Dammit! What did I just say?!
  10. You’re next Trubel. Everybody’s dying up in here.
  11. Trubel’s back!
  12. Take that stick and run very far away Trubel.
  13. Nick had no qualms about beating her up.
  14. Yay! Happy ending.
  15. Spin-off maybe?

Reign S04E07 Recap

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

Dammit Darnley! I was rooting for you! We were all rooting for you!

The relationship between Mary and Darnley had been going so well and it looked like the two of them could truly find happiness in it. I didn’t want Keira to mess that up, even though I knew that she would. When he had the conversation with his mother and spoke of his love for Keira in the past tense I was overjoyed. He was obviously conflicted, but the way he spoke about her was a good sign. He even went to Keira and told her that he had no intentions of breaking off his engagement with Mary. All signs pointed to Keira not coming between Darnley and Mary…until she begged him for a kiss.

I thought that they’d kiss and he would send her on her way, having fulfilled her request. But they ended up sleeping together. Keira knew exactly what she was doing; she was using sex to lure him back to her. Although he did sleep with her, he was still set on marrying Mary and becoming king. So in that way her plan backfired. And despite her offering herself as his mistress, he still said no. He had every intention of being faithful in his marriage!

If only James hadn’t caught them. The second that he and Mary showed up at the tavern I knew that Darnley and Keira would have been found out. With James catching him in the act and promising to keep it a secret, there was still some hope of Mary and Darnley’s relationship thriving. Except, the Loyal Watchman had other plans.

It was foolish of Mary to even attempt to call of their engagement. She knows all too well that she can’t. I’d like to think that Darnley was only lashing out when he told Mary that she only cares about what he can win her when they marry and that she could never love him. He was there. He felt the feelings that were growing between them. She was growing to love him and already cared about him greatly. They could have been happy together and he knew that. He said those things, I think, because he was upset with himself for ruining something that could have been great for him.

I would have liked it if Charles had a choice in staying at the farm Catherine and Narcisse found him at. That was the first time in a long time that he was truly happy and fulfilled. Unfortunately, he’s a king whose throne was under threat and he needed to return to court. Then he only made things worse by declaring himself a Protestant to Leeza. I did appreciate how he exerted his power as king in that moment, though, and put her in her place. It was time that someone did. If he plans to continue down this path, he needs to find a way for the crown to make money and fast.

I was suspicious of Nicole when she accepted Catherine and Narcisse’s offer so readily. Even more so when she was right at Charles’ side when Catherine and Narcisse confronted him about his declaration. It was no surprise when he said that she and her family were responsible for his conversion. I didn’t expect her to be a social climber, though. It was very bold of her to throw herself at Narcisse. Poor Charles doesn’t even know he’s being played.

I’m with both Narcisse and Catherine on how to deal with Nicole; she needs to be gotten rid of but they need to get as much use out of her as they can first. She has Charles’ ear and they need her for the time being. Hopefully that means that she can convince him to go back to being a Catholic. If she doesn’t, that won’t bode well for Charles, Henry, the rest of the Valois family and especially for France.

Leeza in her pettiness – and I’d dare say wickedness as well – has essentially forced Catherine to choose between her two remaining sons. Not only that, she’s set one of them up to die. As much as she hates Catherine and wants to hurt her, literally putting the lives of her brothers on the line is incredibly callous. She really doesn’t love or care about her family. In addition to tearing her family apart, she’s setting up France to descend into civil war and upheaval. Laying the ground work for Spain to potentially have a chance to swoop in and take hold of France. Not only is she getting to punish Catherine, she may get to seize France for herself, just like she’s wanted this entire time.

I knew that Agatha was going to die in this episode from the moment that Elizabeth made her queen. That was a very sweet thing for her to do and it was funny and cute to see Agatha make Gideon obey her orders. I also liked the moment when she answered Agatha’s question about what it would be like to die. She’s been a great help to Gideon throughout Agatha’s illness. I really wanted Agatha to get that blueberry pie.

Despite Agatha being Gideon’s daughter, I feel like this little story line was more about Elizabeth than about him. It served to humanise her further and she learned something from it. Because of Agatha’s struggles and her bravery in the face of death, Elizabeth changed her tactics in dealing with Mary. Or at least the plan she had in action at the moment. She learned not to be ruled by her fears, which I thought was a nice, subtle call back to when Lady Lennox said that she never would.

Random thoughts:

  1. Elizabeth is getting desperate.
  2. Catherine: “But in the absence of such a man, I must settle for you.” Savage.
  3. Really Darnley? Keira’s trying to trap you!
  4. Yes! Leeza’s finally gone!

Gaming News: Friday 31st of March, 2017

It has been officially confirmed, Destiny 2 will be coming to the PC platform. This rumour has been floating around for some time and yesterday it was revealed on Destiny’s website; in a pre-order option list that the game will have multiple editions available and the PC will be as a selectable platform.

Bungie had this to say about the announcement on their site:

“Thus begins the conversation about our next adventure together. There will be so much more to say before we reunite the Guardians to reclaim their city from the most dreaded threat it has ever faced. Fortunately, we’ll have all summer long to dive into the details.

This is a new beginning for every player. We know you have questions about the worlds you’ll explore, the enemies you’ll fight, the powers you’ll master, and (as Cayde promised) the loot you’ll earn. All will be answered in the weeks and months to come. It should be a hell of a ride.

At this moment, our focus is the story we’re telling in Destiny 2. Up next, we’ll take a look at the gameplay. Your first opportunity to see Guardians in action will happen on May 18. We hope to have you all in the audience for the gameplay reveal livestream.

This summer will be your chance to get your hands on a controller. You’ll be invited to help us prepare for the launch of Destiny 2 by joining an open Beta. Players who pre-order will be the first to jump into action, but we’ll be calling on all Guardians to give their feedback.

There will be so many other stops to make on the road to September 8. The journey that leads to Destiny 2 will circle the globe and span the solar system. We’ve only fired the first shot.”

The original game was a popular title at its worldwide release on September 9, 2014, for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One consoles. Since then it’s developed quite the loyal fan base, so their upcoming sequel should do quite well.

We move onto Oculus news where its co-founder Palmer Luckey, who became infamous last year for his support for the pro-Trump “shitposting” group Nimble America, has left the company. This development has been confirmed by Oculus themselves who had this to say:

Palmer will be dearly missed. Palmer’s legacy extends far beyond Oculus. His inventive spirit helped kickstart the modern VR revolution and build an industry. We’re thankful for everything he did for Oculus and VR, and we wish him all the best.

No word on what his future endeavors might be.

And finally, some fantastic about one of our favourite Game Developers; in its 2016 financial results, CD Projekt has revealed that total sales of the award winning Witcher 3 has exceeded $250 million, and the entire trilogy has now sold more than 25 million copies. Piotr Nielubowicz, Vice President for Financial Affairs, had this to say:

The strong market position of The Witcher underpins the commercial success of the Blood and Wine expansion pack, published in May. The 2016 revenues and net profit of the CD PROJEKT Capital Group were equivalent to 75% of the corresponding figures for 2015, which is when the release of The Witcher 3 took place. These excellent financial results for the past two years enable us to pursue new, ambitious undertakings and further expand our enterprise. Key development projects currently underway include Cyberpunk 2077 and GWENT: The Witcher Card Game.

Cyberpunk 2077 is still in development, buy industry rumours have suggested that the property is alot closer to conclusion that we previously anticipated.

The Digicel Barbados Reggae Festival Launches

0

March 29th marked the launch of the 2017 Digicel Barbados Reggae Festival. The 13-year-old festival, held by FAS Promotions, kicked off with a media launch in the 3W’s Foyer at Kensington Oval. Various representatives from sponsoring brands, a representative from the Ministry of Sports, Youth and Culture as well as some of the promoters themselves shed some light on the upcoming events.

Al Gilkes, a promoter from FAS entertainment, noted that despite backlash from previous years about the involvement of local acts, the festival has and will continue to support local entertainers. Even after having financial constraints this year, they still managed to push Barbadian artist with the festival featuring 16 local acts and 20 DJs versus only 10 Jamaican acts in the 3 major shows.

Al continued, noting that the festival does well for tourism on the island, with an increase in arrivals from regional and international countries. He also noted that the festival commences a huge block of entertainment in the Barbadian calendar. Following the Reggae Festival are Crop Over and Carifesta; a string of events which are on the radar for several regional and international acts. Mr. Gilkes also stated that if St.Lucia can be a multi-festival hub, Barbados can be an entertainment capital.

Representatives from various sponsors (such as Burger King, Starcom, and Mount Gay to name a few)  had nothing but positive remarks for the festival, praising it for its growth and the lasting appeal it has maintained throughout the years.

This year there will be weekly “Dancehall Revolutions” sponsored by Remy Martin. These are different shows at various locations throughout the island showcasing local reggae acts. The show will then continue with the Reggae Beach Party on the 23rd of April, the Vintage Reggae Show & Dance on the 28th, the Reggae Party Cruise on the 29th and climax with the Reggae On The Hill show at Farley Hill on the 30th of April.

Scandal S06E08 Recap

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

I’m not as upset with Abby as I was at the end of last week’s episode. Not now that I know her side of things; that she wasn’t complicit in most of it and that she had no idea what she’d gotten herself into. But at the same time I still don’t sympathise with her. I spent the entire episode shaking my head at Abby.

It wasn’t like with Papa Pope. They didn’t trap her the same way that they did him. She was lured into it with sweet, little promises of power and the presidency. She fell for their con. Given her background with Pope & Associates and her current position as Chief of Staff in the White House, she should know so much better. When random people from an organisation you’ve never heard of come to you, offering you $300 million dollars for a vague idea of what your future could be, that’s suspicious and you should turn it down.

Which she did at first. Then she changed her mind and took them up on it because she was mad that Fitz wanted his library to be in Vermont. If ever there was a moment when Abby was petty and childish, that was it. Who the hell was she to think that she could chastise Fitz and tell him how he is to live his life after leaving office? If the man wants to move to Vermont and live a simple, quiet, normal life, that is his prerogative and he’s more than earned it. I cheered when he put her in her place. The woman needs to learn to respect his choices.

I’m sure that Abby’s acceptance had little to do with her being upset about Vermont and everything to do with what “Marjorie” (the woman in the red dress) said about her being in service of someone else’s vision and never being heard, but still. If we didn’t know who those people were it was still obviously a trap. Even so, Cyrus thinks that Abby has what it takes to be president so who knows?

She wasn’t even very discreet in executing the tasks that they’d set for her. Especially switching the bullets that were in Frankie’s body. Major Morales had to have found her behaviour to have been extremely odd. He had to be suspicious of her. Abby was far too zealous in trying to convince him to do the autopsy without the proper authorisation and then she had him kicked out mid-way through. She shouldn’t even have been there when she had him removed.

Not as suspicious, but close enough, was when she handed the secretary the red folder. Her instructions were so shady; hand it to another secretary and tell her to hand it to Fitz in fifteen minutes and if she asks say it’s confidential? Maybe manipulating the information the president gets, how and when is so common that no one bats an eye at that and Abby didn’t need to worry.

She didn’t even know that they had planned to kill Frankie and frame Cyrus for it. Something that it seems she tried to atone for by actively working against them when she tried to convince Fitz not to pursue the investigation into Cyrus and to take the death penalty off of the table. Earlier in the episode when it became clear that she wasn’t aware what she was getting into and I thought back to those moments, I thought that maybe she’d managed to tell someone about the conspiracy and was by then a double agent; that she tried to get rid of the death penalty because she didn’t want Cyrus to die because she knew that he was innocent and was trying to save him.

That’s what she was trying to do, albeit under different circumstances than I had imagined and she did try to tell someone, David, but failed because “Marjorie” had wormed her way into his life and was posing as his girlfriend. And she’s still trying to save Cyrus; she went to them and gave up Jennifer in exchange for his freedom. She redeemed herself quite a bit there.

And we still don’t know whether or not Huck is alive.

Random thoughts:

  1. “Election Nigh. Again.” Yea, we’re as tired of seeing it over and over again as you are of replaying it.
  2. Answer your phone Abby. You wanted to be part of this.
  3. In way over your head Abby.
  4. Abby’s phone didn’t say “Private” when “Marjorie” was calling her before. It showed a number.
  5. They really like taking money from shady bank accounts and using it to blackmail the people they gave it to don’t they?
  6. Why was Meg standing outside of the door to Cyrus’ room?
  7. They prepared for everything!
