The Flash S03E21 Recap

0

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

This was one of the funnest and funniest episodes of The Flash this side of season three and definitely one of it’s best. At least for about half of it. At about the midway point the funny moments stopped coming and it settled into it’s usual seriousness and melodrama.

Amnesiac Barry is the best Barry. His reactions to everything are hilarious. Especially his freak out about whether or not he still had a liver and when he looked down at his hand after Wally said that the two of them are brothers. Wally’s face after that was priceless and meme worthy.

The one thing about stories in which time travel is at their core, is that the explanations for the events taking place are often times migraine inducing. That was the case for me with Barry and Savitar-Barry’s conversation at the beginning of the episode. It didn’t make a lick of sense until Cisco explained it later and I thank the writers  (for once) for including that scene. It’s still cheesy that Savitar exists because that version of Barry had no friends, but I get that it hurt being rejected by the people he loved.

Ever since Joe’s “love conquers all” adjacent declaration, the show seemed to have doubled down on the “without love we become monsters” idea in this episode. It’s a little nauseating but this is The CW and they deal in cheese, corn, melodrama and tired cliches.

The second that Cisco presented his idea to stop Barry from retaining new memories, I knew it wouldn’t work because they didn’t have Caitlin. And given that the whole point of it was to stop Savitar from learning of their plans because he is a future version of Barry and will remember everything he does, I was surprised that none of them brought up the point that Savitar would know about this plan as well and that Savitar didn’t speed over there to stop them from taking away his one advantage. I also feel like because Cisco and Julian are scientists, even if they don’t specialise in biology and medicine like Caitlin, they should still have accounted for Barry’s powers as a variable.

That being said, it was really just a vehicle for demonstrating how critical a component she is in Team Flash. They were essentially useless without her. And having Barry’s memory loss extended to Savitar was a means of getting her back into Star Labs. It was a clever way to do that.

I didn’t think that Cisco reminiscing about his shared past with Caitlin would bring her back, but it seems to have worked a little since her eyes briefly returned to their natural colour as she was leaving. Here too the writer are stressing the whole love thing; only the love of her friends can bring Caitlin back.

It sprang back up again in the end when they fixed Barry’s brain but he still couldn’t remember, because Iris always needs to give him a speech to motivate him and only her love can bring him back to who he truly is.

It became very evident very quickly that this episode was about Barry accepting his pain and suffering as a part of who he is. For this reason I think that this version of Barry will likely end the Savitar loop. He will not become or create Savitar. Because he has accepted his pain and because he knows where Savitar came from, he won’t create the conditions necessary for Savitar to come into existence. I just can’t see it happening that a new Savitar will come out of this.

Random thoughts:

  1. That clash between Barry and Savitar was cool.
  2. “Speed For Canon” sounds better.
  3. This Tracy and HR ship is moving pretty fast.
  4. Bart:”How do we afford to live here?” I know right!
  5. This court case was a disaster.
  6. Iris and Barry are going to fall in love no matter what.
  7. Wally: “You should never have tried this without Caitlin.” I know right!

The Flash airs Tuesdays at 8 PM on The CW.

WorldWide Ransomware Attack

0

An unprecedented global cyber-attack has been underway since Friday of last week, so far effecting more than 200,000 organisation across the globe; from large scale businesses in Europe Friday, to Japan and China over the weekend. Users who have been affected by this intrusive attack have had their systems locked down. According to reports, with a screen demanding a $300 pay out to release their files. The name of this software is WannaCrypt, deemed WannaCry as it has been unsympathetic in its attack. For the general Barbadian however, it may seem as though this attack has may have little or no effect on them, however please be advised it would be unwise in face of this global crisis.

What is WannaCry(pt)?

To answer that question, we must first define what ransomware actually is: Ransomware is basically any kind of cyber-attack that involves hackers taking control of a computer system and blocking access until a ransom is paid. The ransom can be in the form of wired cash payment transfers, or as of recently, bitcoin payments. It’s worth noting that cyber criminals can only gain access to a system if the infected malicious software is downloaded within the given network. This situation often occurs when the victim unknowingly clicks on a link or downloads the software innocently. After the software gains access to the computer, the hackers can begin an attack to lock down all files within the network. This process is not immediate however, as the data takes its time to be encrypted one after the other.

WannaCry is a unique ransomware program that locks all data on a computer system, leaving the user only access to two files; the instructions on what to do next (a.k.a. payment) and the WannaCry program. When the software is opened it tells computer users that their files have been encryted, and gives them a few days to pay up, warning that their files will otherwise be deleted. It demands payment in Bitcoin; the infamous cryptocurrency and a digital payment system, giving instructions on how to buy it, and provides a Bitcoin address to send it. Bitcoins being used for the payment is a tactical move on the part of the hackers, because it’s pseudonymous, meaning that funds are not tied to real-world entities but rather Bitcoin addresses making transactions unregulated and virtually untraceable.

Currently the initial attack was quashed by a security expert in England, who has been hailed as an “accidental hero” for subduing the spread of the initial version of the ransomware late Friday. He noticed an unregistered domain name in the software code of the ransomware after buying it and registering it, seemingly halted in its tracks. The domain names are being called “kill switches” to the malware. Researchers say new variants of the software have a similar kill switch, but they refer to different domains.

“Thankfully some researchers are already registering the new domains as they identify them,” AlienVault researcher Chris Doman says. “The cat-and-mouse will likely continue until [someone] makes a larger change to the malware, removing the kill-switch functionality completely. At that point, it will be harder to stop new variants.”

New variants of this software will keep arising, so to help protect your data from being compromised, follow the steps below to be secure:

  • Back up your computer and store the safety version in the cloud or on a drive that is not connected to your computer.
  • Use robust antivirus software.
  • Keep all the software on your computer up-to-date. Enable automatic updates.
  • Never open attachments in emails from someone you don’t know. And remember that any account can be compromised.
  • Enable the “Show file extensions” option in the Windows settings on your computer. This will make it much easier to spot potentially malicious files. Stay away from file extensions like “.exe,” “.vbs” and “.scr.”
  • If you find a problem, disconnect your machine immediately from the Internet or other network connections (such as home Wi-Fi).

Featurette With Shani Bannister

It’s Capstone season at the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination. Starting today, May 18th, until tomorrow, May 19th, students from the 2017 graduating class will be presenting their creative projects in the areas of film, theatre and dance.

As the name “Capstone” suggests, these projects are the culmination of everything they have studied and learned as they pursued their Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees.

Today we meed Shani Bannister.

Introduce yourself, what has your journey as an artist been like?

Shani Bannister: If I had to describe myself as an artist I’d say I’m more on the experimental side of art. I’m interested in mixing mediums and styles to create a different aesthetic.

What’s the name of your capstone project and what is it about?

SB: My piece is entitled Raven, it is an episodic piece so Capstone Thesis is really just the first installment in a much bigger project. The piece is about a recording artist who is really thrust into being a video vixen and essentially she isn’t too concerned until she receives a magical typewriter that begins to inspire her to be introspective.

I believe what is deemed positive is subjective so I don’t want to say Raven is a positive image of a black woman but she seeks to live the truth of a black woman instead of what is the archetype built for us.

What inspired you to choose this topic?

SB: I’m tired of seeing slaves and loud women on TV as the representation of black women and it’s not to say that [that] isn’t a black female experience, but it isn’t everyone’s and I think as black people we have to look at our experiences and draw from them because everyone’s story is valid and necessary for progression of self and others.

How has the Bachelor of Fine Arts, Creative Arts journey been? Looking back at your time at UWI?

SB: The BA Creative Arts journey has been long and challenging but worth it. University is an amazing time to find yourself and define yourself and figure out what sets you apart, it isn’t a time to blend in.

What was the most challenging part of your capstone journey?

SB: The most challenging part of the Capstone journey is finding time. It feels like there are never enough hours in a day and when thinking about deadlines it can become really overwhelming.

What have you enjoyed the most about your capstone journey?

SB: Capstone has made me a stronger conceptual thinker. You have to get on set and map out these crazy schemes and ideas on how to get things done and I’m grateful for that; you have to make what you have work.

What reaction do you look forward to on your screening night?

SB: I’m not sure what reactions I want. I think all reactions are needed in the creative process; good or bad. So I really just want reactions not just the anticipated clapping.

What’s next?

SB: What is next? I want to take some time to focus on Shani the artist and really take my craft and make it the best it can be. Spending this year getting into graphics has highlighted the passion I have for graphic design and I’m hopeful that my path will encompass work in that arena.

See Shani’s film Raven tonight at  7:oo PM at the Walcott Warner Theatre of the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination.

Today we meed Stefan Forde.

Introduce yourself, what has your journey as an artist been like?

Stefan Forde: It has been quite an adventure being an animator and film maker. I [initially] came from a more [scientific] background so the entire thinking space and attitudes sometimes seem foreign to me but [somehow] I feel at home. [M]y switch [from science to the arts] is God inspired and so far I truly believe [that] I have found my place.

What’s the name of your capstone project and what is it about?

SF: Being Human is a film about a society’s social interaction which is controlled by an artificial intelligence.

What inspired you to choose this topic?

SF: Being a [C]hristian I like the  aspect of which [man’s] creation eventually [gets] to a point where it seeks to believe [it’s] better than the creator, meaning the AI believes it knows [what’s] best for human survival.

How has the Bachelor of Fine Arts, Creative Arts journey been? Looking back at your time at UWI?

SF: [There] were ups and downs but through it all I learnt important [lessons] and made so [many] new, remarkable and splendid friends.

My drive crashed, and I was pushed [off] course at the last minute. I had back ups but I was set on finishing on the drive I had.

What was the most challenging part of your capstone journey?

SF: [To] be honest it was more filming my cast and talking with them and also meeting a tutor who was looking out for the well being of the class.

What reaction do you look forward to on your screening night?

SF: [I] hope people enjoy it and [I] also [want them] to see that [it’s] possible to aim [for] and accomplish something very different. [E]ven if you make mistakes, they are there to challenge the other artist under you to do better and also [it’s] a challenge for yourself.

What’s next?

SF: [W]ell I hope to travel the world and meet amazing people and to be honest to know Christ more and have my art reflect the relationship I have with him.

See Stefan’s film Being Human tonight at  7:oo PM at the Walcott Warner Theatre of the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination.

Mix 96.9 Changes Direction

In a statement released to the radio station’s Facebook page yesterday, Scott and Anne Marie Weatherhead explained their decision to move the station away from secular music to a 100% Christian radio station.

They began adding Christian music to the station in 2008 and in the following year had “[given their] lives to the Lord.” They’d started to remove more and more secular music from their playlist over the years due to increasingly “negative content” such as “hate, drug use, alcohol abuse [and] sexual innuendo.”

They believe that “[m]any of our young people are lost, and God would like them to know him, and to have a relationship with him” and seek to use the station as a “guiding light” for their target audience – “young adults and the young at heart” – and bringing them closer to God so that they may establish a relationship with Him.

They stressed that the change was not motivated by commercial or financial reasons and that the name of the station will not change.

The response to the news has been overwhelmingly positive, with many of their listeners in the post’s comments expressing excitement at the station’s new direction, congratulating them on the move and showing their support.

Reign S04E11 Recap

0

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

Things were starting to look up for Mary and Darnley’s relationship in the beginning of this episode; she finally acknowledged that he tries and expressed a desire to return her efforts in kind. Then Darnley – as Darnley does – had to ruin everything with his desperation and ambition, in an abrupt change of character that came so fast, I got whiplash. We’ve always known that he was ambitious and had questionable morality, but never before had Darnley been this vicious. Especially toward Mary.

I’d been suspicious of him since he delivered word of Elizabeth’s engagement to the Arch Duke Ferdinand and even more so when he was so aggressive toward Bothwell and forced Mary’s hand in banishing him from the castle. He took a bit too much pleasure in seeing the man gone and seemed to be reveling in his power as king. So when he brought up the Crown Matrimonial – yet again – I figured that he’d brought the news of Elizabeth’s engagement to Mary and helped her assemble a force to attack England all so  that he could “earn” it. He essentially confessed as much to Mary. In fact, after she asked him why he was so concerned about something happening to her, I briefly entertained the thought that he was plotting to have her killed.

That wasn’t what he was planning, but he threatened her life (and everything she’s fought for) when she refused him, “warning” her of what would happen if the men they sent to England were stopped and her seal was found. He even went so far as to draw up the document for her to sign and gather the Privy Council so that they could announce that he’d be granted the Crown Matrimonial together. The arrogance he displayed there was sickening and I was glad that Mary ripped up the document.

All he did was send her running to the man he wanted to keep away from her: Lord Bothwell. She had no choice but to turn to him and ask him to stop the attack on England and retrieve her seal. Sending him and Rizzio to speak to Gideon so that he could help as well. Luckily, Bothwell and Rizzio succeeded, leaving Darnley to quiver and beg at Mary’s feet once confronted with the news. It was satisfying to see. He quickly changed his tune, however, once she told him that they were over and threatened to publicly denounce their child as his. All of the hope I had for the relationship is now gone, as is my love for and faith in Darnley.

Things weren’t faring much better in French court, as they were having their own family squabble. It was obvious that Henry was trying to undermine Charles’ rule. Doing petty little things like throwing a party “in is honour” and not inviting him and  hitting him in the face with a tennis ball filled with stones. This didn’t escape Catherine’s notice and she threatened to sell him out as a heretic to Leeza and Spain, for bringing a book of magic to court with him; a souvenir from his time as a soldier.

Telling Henry exactly what she planned to do – considering how cunning and obviously willing he is to back stab his family in pursuit of his ambition – probably was not the wisest move on her part. After Henry revealed that there were Spanish warships waiting in the harbour if he needed them, Catherine used the book of magic in order to strengthen Charles’ kingship. If Henry every finds out that she had, it’s over for her. And even if she hadn’t used it, he could have used her own play against her.

Unfortunately for Catherine as well, Narcisse has sided with Henry since he sees him as a better king than Charles ever was or ever could be. Granted, it is to some extent true; Charles is little more than a puppet being controlled by a foolish, if not ambitious, little girl and that is something that I could not see happening to Henry. He’s too strong of a person for that. In fact, Henry had been eyeing Nicole for the entire episode and I fully expect her to leave Charles for him at some point. Narcisse too. She’s in love with him now, but I’m confident that Henry has the charm and charisma to make her fall for him. Even if she doesn’t, she will align herself with whomever has the most power and if that ever becomes Henry, that is where she will be.

In England, Elizabeth’s engagement to the Arch Duke Ferdinand isn’t going quite so well. As much as she seemed to like him at her birthday party, it looks like since she became aware of her feelings for Gideon he isn’t quite as alluring as he used to be. Going so far as to beg Gideon to get her out of a four hour carriage ride with him. But when he was to save her from the Arch Duke, he was spying on Bothwell and Rizzio as they stopped the attack on England and was caught by their men.

Although as Gideon himself said, he works for Elizabeth and not Mary, I didn’t think he would have done something of the sort considering his history with Mary and the love they once shared. And though I understand that his loyalty lies with Elizabeth first, as a subject of his queen, I expected that since he now has feelings for Elizabeth that he’d be a little less on Mary’s side. Because he knew too much about their operation, Bothwell knocked him out and took him back to Scotland with them.

There, he promised he wouldn’t tell Elizabeth about their attempted coup. But when he got back home and Elizabeth said she would call off her engagement because she was worried he’d left her and she didn’t want to live a life with someone she didn’t love, he spilled the beans! Kind of. He bent the truth somewhat and only told Elizabeth that there had been an attempted coup by Catholic, English subjects that Mary asked him to help her stop. And that without a Catholic husband, she would always be facing such dangers.

I didn’t think that Elizabeth’s engagement would last the episode, but I thought that it would be because Arch Duke Ferdinand found her and Gideon kissing or something of the sort and called it off himself. If she she heeds Gideon’s warning, though, the engagement is still on.

Random thoughts:

  1. Narcisse must hate entertaining Nicole. She’s such a child.
  2. Laying on that praise real thick Nicole.
  3. Henry is such a snake. He didn’t hide his hand long at all.
  4. Luc and Claude are 100% going to fall for each other.
  5. Did Henry really just try to blackmail Narcisse? Ha!
  6. Stay away from that dark magic Catherine!
  7. Eugh! Charles is an angsty, brooding teen again?
  8. This spell is totally going to backfire on Catherine.
  9. You brought this on yourself Darnley.
  10. No Mary, you never really did give him much of a chance. That’s probably why he’s acting this way,

Reign airs Fridays at 9 PM on The CW.

Scandal S06E13 Recap

0

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

With Team Pope thoroughly thrashing Payas in the last two episodes, it was only inevitable that he would push back at some point. And this week, he did. Hard. Taking inspiration from Team Pope’s fake out drone attack last week, he executed quite a show of force when he placed nine drones, armed with bombs, above nine American cities, threatening to detonate them at random intervals if Team Pope didn’t give him back Mellie and Marjorie-Samantha-Grace.

The second that Liv challenged Payas and called his bluff on the bombs, I knew that he would have detonated one of them. He didn’t even wait for her to finish her sentence! The man meant business. Team Pope had driven him into a corner and cornered animals are dangerous and reckless. It seems like Liv had underestimated exactly how far she and the rest of her team had pushed him.

Liv once again sought help from Papa Pope and he once again refused, still insisting that they both run and save themselves. This wasn’t the only time in the episode that Liv asked her father for help; the second time she took Fitz with her and still he refused. I get that Marjorie-Samantha-Grace and Payas broke Papa Pope, but his stubbornness and cowardice was frustrating. All he wanted was to protect himself and especially Liv, but knowing that she was not going to give up the fight, helping her so that she could succeed in her efforts would have been the best way to do that.

When her first request to her father failed, Liv sent Jake to get information from Marjorie-Samantha-Grace. Which he surprisingly got considering how deft Marjorie-Samantha-Grace is. But he expertly played her and she inadvertently revealed a tracking device in her neck that Payas used to keep tabs on her. One that Team Pope could use to find Payas’ location. It was too good to be true though, because a kill switch was activated and it was rendered useless. I really thought that Team Pope had Payas then. I should have known that that wouldn’t work.

Jake pays Marjorie-Samantha-Grace another visit, this time armed with the lie that they had captured Payas and that they would offer her a deal if she talked. And she took it. I didn’t believe that Marjorie-Samantha-Grace had fallen for their little ruse; she’s too sharp. I was positive that she was acting since she was far too human – showing fear and desperation – compared to her previous demeanour. Plus, she never struck me as someone who could be shaken. What really solidified it for me was when she asked David if they could start over. Marjorie-Samantha-Grace is not a woman who would fall for her mark, so it was no surprise that David fell into her trap or that she’d been tricking them the entire time.

Before David went to Marjorie-Samantha-Grace, he’d given Liv invoices showing that she and Payas had been delivering boxes containing nine to eleven pound bricks to Papa Pope regularly. It struck me as odd that Marjorie-Samantha-Grace and Payas would leave any sort of paper trail for anything they’d done, no matter how small and seemingly trivial, given that it could be traced back to them. I would think that they would be so much more careful about their activities. In any case, Liv tells Fitz about the packages and he goes to speak to Papa Pope.

In their conversation Papa Pope reveals that the bricks were a threat to keep him in line; a human head weighs nine to eleven pounds and they would send him Liv’s if he didn’t behave. They both noted how important Liv is to Papa Pope and that he would do anything to protect her. It was because of that exchange that I didn’t think that Papa Pope was truly running away when he freed Marjorie-Samantha-Grace.

I did at first think that Papa Pope was genuinely running away and using Marjorie-Samantha-Grace as leverage to earn his freedom from Payas. But as the scene progressed and I remembered his conversation with Fitz, I quickly realised that it was all a ploy. Using Marjorie-Samantha-Grace to lure Payas so that they could follow him was genius. When Jake killed the person operating the drones and then paused to say a few words to Payas, I literally shouted at my screen for him to shut up and just shoot him already. It’s in those moments that the villain can and sometimes does get the upper hand but that was not the case here. Jake’s words were brief and he shot Payas in the head shortly thereafter.

With Payas taken care of, that only left Marjorie-Samantha-Grace and Papa Pope took her out with a dinosaur tooth. When he told her to look into the box, I expected Payas’ head to be in it. But it was to be the final resting place for hers.

Even with Marjorie-Samantha-Grace and Payas dead I was still uneasy. Their defeat was a little too easy and I was ready for another threat to rear it’s head at the very end of the episode, but nothing happened. If the preview for the next episode is any indication, I can rest easy on that front because their next big threat seems to be Liv.

Random thoughts:

  1. I really thought that Papa Pope would rub Payas’ retaliation in Liv’s face.
  2. Does Liv really think that Marjorie-Samantha-Grace would talk?
  3. I thought the boxes contained body parts. Close enough.
  4. “Emancipated” is such a word to say to a black man.

The Flash S03E20 Recap

0

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

The big reveal of Savitar’s identity was a big disappointment. Perhaps due largely in part to all of the fan speculating and theory-crafting that preceded it; we, the fans, knew for a very long time who Savitar would be and no amount of (annoying) teasing the writers could have done – Abra and Killer Frost anyone? – would have put the punch or shock factor into the moment. Beyond that, the way that Barry suddenly pieced it together, what made it click for him and the fact of who Savitar is was just kind of “meh.”

Killer Frost’s first mission as a minion of Savitar lined up perfectly with Team Flash’s own mission for the week; finding Tracy Brand. Whereas Killer Frost was tasked with killing her, Team Flash wanted to find her and fast track her research on the speed force so that they could defeat Savitar.

Given that Savitar is from the future and knows that Tracy is the one who invented the technology that would allow Barry to trap him in the speed force, one would think that killing Tracy would’ve been his priority and something he would have been pursuing from the beginning. Especially since Barry literally cannot defeat him without her help. Instead, he conveniently decided to try to kill her only when Team Flash became aware of and had use for her.

With Killer Frost and Savitar after Tracy, Team Flash decides to take her under their protection and tell her of her illustrious future. But not before Killer Frost makes two attempts on her life.

Both times Cisco freezes when he has a clear shot to take out Caitlin, later confessing to Julian – who had to force it out of him – that he’s afraid of killing her. Which only made me question why he never had such a problem attacking other metas in the past, but they were trying to kill him or someone else on Team Flash and even though she’s doing that too, she’s actually someone close to him.

Up until his confession, Cisco had been mad at Julian for taking off Caitlin’s necklace and it really, really bothered me. It only reminded me of the fact that he was in no way displeased with Caitlin for stealing the piece of the philosopher’s stone. Both Julian and Caitlin did something dangerous and yet he can only find it within himself to get mad at one of them for their mistake.

Team Flash is drawn into their last face off with Killer Frost when she kidnaps Cecil (who Joe had been awkward with all episode because she told him she loved him and decided to break up with because he doesn’t like lying to her about Team Flash and he doesn’t want to endanger her life) and threatens to kill her if they don’t hand over Tracy. Which is totally unnecessary since Tracy is sitting out in the open, on a bench in front of a statue of Galileo with HR at the time. She was completely vulnerable. It was the perfect opportunity

Another great opportunity to kill her happened when Savitar himself showed up after Cisco incapacitated Killer Frost. In the time that it took him to knock Cisco away from Killer Frost’s body, Savitar could have killed Tracy. Instead he gave a monologue and carried Killer Frost’s unconscious body away.

Again, Barry literally cannot defeat him without her help. And because the fastest man alive didn’t take the shot when he had it, Tracy figured out exactly how to trap him in the speed force; by using his own speed against him. But Cisco thinks Savitar needs Caitlin for something, so that could explain his choice of action at that moment. Still, someone as fast as him could have more than likely killed Tracy and taken Killer Frost away.

Joe makes up with Cecil and tells her everything and that he loves her. He relays the news to Barry, Iris and Wally. When Joe says “Love’s the only thing we got in this world. Without it, nothing really matters. And who knows what we’d become if we didn’t have it.”, Barry comes to the realisation of who Savitar is. It was the cheesiest, most eye-roll inducing catalyst for a character to figure something out I’ve ever seen.

Barry confronts Savitar and he climbs out of his suit, revealing himself to be…a future Barry with a facial scar that are not as cool as Fire Lord Zuko’s. It was the singular, most disappointing thing to ever happen on  The Flash. I can only imagine others not being disappointed if they cheered because they were proven right or if they kept away from the fan community and knew nothing of the theories as to his identity and were thus surprised.

It’s not a bad idea to have Savitar be a future Barry; to have the hero be the villain. But the way the idea was executed, not just during the reveal but over the course of the season, left a lot to be desired.

Random thoughts:

  1. Using his flash lightning to light the gas was brilliant.
  2. Julian did not need to explicitly state that they wiped the security footage to protect Caitlin. We gathered that already when Barry said that the footage was missing.
  3. Love this display of Killer Frost’s powers! More please.
  4. Putting too much pressure on Tracy, Team Flash.
  5. HR’s incessant flirting is both cute and hilarious.

The Flash airs Tuesdays at 8 PM on The CW.

The Flash S03E19 Recap

0

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

The future is not so bright for Team Flash if they fail to save Iris. Just like he said he would at the end of the last episode, Barry travelled to the future to find out who Savitar is and how to defeat him. The news of Caitlin’s transformation into Killer Frost didn’t at all delay his travel plans. Luckily, his time travelling ability means that he can return to exactly the moment when he left and he won’t miss a beat in saving Caitlin from herself. Or so he thinks.

With Wally’s help Barry opens a worm hole and travels to 2024; the year in which The Flash is reported to have disappeared and by which time he’s already trapped Savitar in the speed force. Before he leaves he promises Iris that he’ll be there for Joe if she dies. I found Barry to be a tad inconsiderate when having that conversation with Iris. It’s Team Flash, we all know that they’re going to save her, but even so when she was telling him “If I die” he shouldn’t have been so dismissive of what she was going to say.

His future self – who will henceforth bee referred to as Emo Barry – apparently lives alone in a dilapidated Star Labs and is no help to Barry at all. He doesn’t know who Savitar is and does not believe that Barry can save Iris. Having not gotten the information he had gone to the future for, Barry decides to return to the past. He’s seemingly able to achieve this without Wally’s help, which begs the question of why he needed it in the first place. However, he finds himself unable to leave.

He then pays a visit to Julian and discovers that he is keeping Killer Frost locked away in a cell. I don’t know if I find it sweet, creepy or sad that Julian is still there with Caitlin/Killer Frost. In any case, Barry finds out that Killer Frost teamed up with Savitar and knows who he is, but she refuses to tell him. I wish the writers would stop playing this game with us; having people on the show who know who Savitar is but won’t say. This is the second time! In a row! Killer Frost tells Barry to go and see Wally; he fought with Savitar after Iris’s death and likely knows his identity.

Barry finds Wally in a wheel chair and catatonic, having had his spine shattered in his fight with Savitar. He tries speaking to him, but Wally is unresponsive. He asks Cisco where Joe is and finds him visiting Iris’ grave. Here, Barry learns that his future self didn’t keep his promise to be there for Joe. The two haven’t spoken for a long while and Joe is very upset with him.

I found it unfair that Barry, in his grief, is expected to be the pillar of strength for all of Team Flash. He lost the woman he loved. Yes he made the promise to Iris to be there for Joe, but on top of that Team Flash apparently can’t function without him being there. The team did lose three members and Joe and Wally would’ve been broken up about Iris, Joe about Wally as well later and Julian about Caitlin, but the only one of them that tried to keep the team together was Cisco. Why couldn’t Barry grieve the way that he wanted to without having to worry about taking care of everyone else?

It was also unfair of Cisco to put it on Barry to help bring the future Team Flash back together. The best way to help them would be going back and try to prevent any of that from happening in the first place. It was kind of selfish of him to try and keep Barry there. I wasn’t surprised that he had done something to prevent Barry’s time travelling. But Barry stayed and got the team back together, including Emo Barry, so that they could take down Top and Mirror Master.

After all of the doom and gloom of the episode, it was nice to see Team Flash happy and in a celebratory mood after their defeat of Top and Mirror Master. Emo Barry tells Barry about the scientist who helped him trap Savitar in the speed force. The only problem is that she did it in 2020, after Iris had died. Emo Barry gives Barry a device with the scientist’s information on it to give to her past self, in the hopes that she can give Barry the tech he needs to defeat Savitar before he can kill Iris.

Barry returns to his own time and tells the other’s about Caitlin joining forces with Savitar, spurring the team to find her before that can happen. It turns out it’s too late for that because the episode ends with Caitlin meeting with Savitar, who gets out of his suit and reveals his identity to her. I’m thinking that maybe in next week’s episode, they will win her back over to their side and since future Killer Frost wouldn’t volunteer Savitar’s identity in this episode, she will in the next one. We already know from the preview for this week’s episode, that they do find out who he is.

Random thoughts:

  1. Are those equations right?
  2. No Julian! Her kisses are death.
  3. HR and Cisco singing “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” was hilarious.
  4. Will “Throwback Thursday” still be a thing in 2024.
  5. This Emo Barry is painful to look at.
  6. Barry: “I can’t get back to the past.” Gotta get back. Back to the past. Samurai Jack.
  7. HR’s a chick magnet?
  8. Team Flash assemble!
  9. Why does Barry keep getting the math wrong? 2024 is seven years away from 2017, so why is he saying her went eight years into the future. Also, if the scientist got the tech to trap Savitar in the speed force completed four years ago, in 2020, then that’s three years after Iris died, not four.

The Flash airs Tuesdays at 8 PM on The CW.
