ICYMI: Vujaday Debuting in Barbados Next April

0

In April 2018, Barbados will host it’s first electronic music festival. Running from the 4th until the 8th, the festival will be held in five different locations on each day; Farley Hill, Holetown, South Beach Zone, and the East and West coasts. The largest event will take place on the Saturday.

In a press release from The Confluence, the creative media agency which has partnered with the festival, Vujaday is described as “an entirely new experience” and “like nothing you have ever seen or felt before.” The press release also quoted festival co-founder Ryan Kruger as saying:

“We couldn’t be more excited to bring a major electronic festival to Barbados. The island is brimming with a vivid culture and amazing sights to take in, and we wanted to make sure that the festival format allowed for guests to experience more than just a single location while enjoying music from around the world.”

Kruger said in an interview with Caribbean Life that the popularity of electronic music has been growing on the island. Adding that “there has been a general shift towards destination style electronic music events like ours driven by a maturing fanbase…We are now eagerly anticipating launching sales as soon as mid August.”

Managing director of A&B Music Supplies, Norman Barrow, has been added to the Vujaday team to “ensure the local culture is well-represented.”

The line up will be announced at a later date, but will be “focused on different styles of house and techno, roping in internationally renowned DJs and local favourites”. In the mean time, guests can visit the Vujaday Music Fesitval website and register for updates concerning ticket and travel packages, promotions and e newsletters. You can also visit the festivals Facebook page.

Game of Thrones S07E04 Recap

0

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

As Olenna did in last week’s episode, Bronn earned the MVP award for this one. He gets along so well with the Lannister brothers and his rapport with Jamie is about as fun as his with Tyrion. He was always a likeable rascal, but this week he truly shined and the growth of his character was evident. He’s more than just a greedy sellsword who only cares about himself and money now. But more on him later.

With the impending delivery of the Tyrell gold, Cersei has the Iron Bank nipping at her heels for different reasons. Tycho is no longer hounding her for repayments and is instead trying to get her to take out another loan. Cersei is relishing her victory and this turn in their relationship, if that smirking expression of hers is any indication. Tycho is laying it on pretty thick with those compliments.

I’m very interested in Cersei’s name dropping the Golden Company and what it is she wants them to recover for her. For non-book readers her use of a sellsword army which she clearly stated to be from Essos, may be confusing since she used Daenerys’ use of foreign soldiers as a negative in a previous episode. The show should perhaps clear that no, but likely won’t.

The Golden Company was founded by Aegor Rivers, a legitimised Targaryen bastard, when he fled Westeros after the first Blackfyre rebellion. It’s comprised of exiled Westerosi and their sons. So although they’re based in Essos, they’re not exactly foreign soldiers.

It’s still ironic though that she would use an army founded by a Targaryen in war against another Targaryen. It’s also worth noting that in the books, this is the sellsword company attached to and fighting for Young Griff, aka the alleged Prince Aegon Targaryen, son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Jon Snow’s older brother.

Some fans speculate that he’s not who he says he is and is actually a Blackfyre. Possibly Illyrio’s son and Varys’ nephew. He’s the “Targaryen” they’re backing and that Tyrion serves in the books.

As the remaining Stark children have finally come back together – except for Jon, but he’ll be back home soon – one of their greatest supporters departed. Meera left Bran to return home to her family (are we ever going to see present day Howland Reed?). She looked so tired and broken. Before that moment it had never occurred to me how much she went through and suffered whilst with Bran. She suffered everything that he did and his emotionless goodbye was heartbreaking. I don’t think it’s likely we’ll be seeing her again.

I was holding my breath the entire time Arya was sitting and waiting for the guards to get Sansa. The way she looked over everything, I swore that she was going to have a moment like with Nymeria and realise that she didn’t belong in Winterfell anymore and leave. That in that moment she’d truly become no one. It thought that it had for sure happened when the guards turned around and she was gone. But she was down in the crypts visiting Ned.

Sansa mentioning Jon’s reaction to Arya’s return only makes me want it all the more. The two were so close and now that R+L=J has been confirmed, their relationship is even more special since Arya is said to be just like Lyanna.

Considering all of the hype and speculation that surrounded Arya having the dagger in promotional images, it’s kind of anti-climactic that Bran just gave it to her. That’s no fault of the writers of course. It’s ours for building it up so much. That being said, she could still kill him. Bran knows all and could tell her about his involvement in he assassination attempt against him. More likely is that, if Arya and Sansa ever tell each other their stories, his name will be added to her list and swiftly removed.

Poor Brienne failed in her mission to find and protect Sansa and Arya. The Stark children came back together of their own power.

Arya and Brienne sparring was everything! I forgot how much I had been looking forward to the two meeting in past seasons, given their similarities and Arya having a woman she could actually look up to (pun not intended). Now after their brief meeting about two seasons ago it’s finally happened!

Arya is about as good with a sword as Brienne. Them being more or less evenly matched was thrilling and the choreography was great. I want to question how Arya got so good with a sword when we’ve only seen her training with a staff when she was at the House of Black and White, but whatever. I hope we see more of her training with Brienne than we did her training there.

Sansa doesn’t look too comfortable with how and how much her younger siblings have changed. She herself went through a lot but she’s arguably the least changed of all of them. It’s understandable that she’d react that way, she doesn’t known them anymore.

Is there actual sexual tension between Jon and Daenerys or are my fangirl tendencies projecting? I want to believe it’s there. Even Davos pointed it out, at least on Jon’s end and he didn’t even deny it! He just said there was no time for it. So does that mean that there will be something when there is time? I really need this ship to happen.

Everything Jon showed Daenerys in the cave aroused a sense of wonder and awe in her. From the beauty of the dragonglass to the markings of the Children of the Forest, he had her enraptured. He may have been doing it to prove the White Walkers to her, but he was being unintentionally smooth all the same. And he touched her hand when he led her to the carving of the White Walkers! And she didn’t pull away!

Then she ruined it by once again insisting he bend the knee.

I get it. She can’t just leave him and the North alone if she means to conquer and rule the seven kingdoms. Plus, letting the North secede could lead to the other kingdoms attempting to do the same and that is in no way ideal. They were still giving each other eyes the entire time, though.

At least she believes him about the White Walkers, the army of the dead and the Long Night now. And will join him in fighting them. She did have a valid point about the safety of his people being more important than his pride, especially with what’s at stake. I don’t believe he was being proud, however; Jon doesn’t have a proud bone in his body.

There was a bit of a Stark reunion on Dragonstone as well when Theon returned. He may not be a Stark by blood, but he was raised with them and might as well be one. I’d never thought of it before, but Sansa clearly told Jon about at least some of what happened to her, so he must know that Bran is alive right? Although he only cited Sansa as the reason why he didn’t kill him. Theon still can’t catch a break.

I’d like to take a moment to appreciate the fact that Daenerys took Jon’s advice by not attacking King’s Landing and that she asked for his advice in the first place. It seems they were just about there, however, since Randyll reported the gold to have entered the city gates. I expected Daenerys to intercept them before the gold reached. In any case, it was still an awesome battle. Albeit a quick one thanks to Drogon.

He is so big now that Daenerys isn’t even visible on his back in a wide shot. I think that she would have won without him just because of the Dothraki, but what’s the point of having weapons of mass destruction of your don’t use them? Also, with the safety concerns raised in the last episode, you’d think they’d have given her some armour or a helmet or something. The Lannister soldiers did exactly what they thought they would; try to shoot her down with arrows.

Kudos to the Lannister soldiers for not emptying their bowels and running for the hills the second Drogon flew in. Brave men they were. Kudos especially to Bronn. He barely hesitated to abandon his precious gold when he dropped it and continued on toward the scorpion. He could have taken the gold and run to safety but instead, he decided to try to take down a dragon. A dragon! That he’d just seen instantly kill dozens of men. Despite his fear.

Not that the scorpion actually worked.

It barely did anything to Drogon and was destroyed so swiftly. The spear wasn’t even that big and Drogon quickly recovered from being shot by it. It was supposed to be Cersei’s trump card. The weapon to balance the scales. It did absolutely nothing and Drogon isn’t even badly wounded. It was woefully ineffective.

I was so scared for Jamie. The fool. Running toward Drogon like that to kill Daenerys. I was certain he was about to die. He wasn’t going to get close to Daenerys without Drogon seeing him. And the dragon did. But just as he was about to reduce Jamie to ashes, Bronn swooped in and saved the day. Drogon didn’t kill him, but Jamie’s still sinking to the bottom of that lake. I don’t think he’ll die though. And Bronn is nowhere in sight.

Random thoughts:

  1. Bronn: “Queen of Thorns gave you one last prick in the balls before saying goodbye?” She did!
  2. So…Meera doesn’t have Dark Sister?
  3. Would have liked Arya to tell Sansa her list.
  4. Daenerys knows what “many things” means. Now do it with Jon! He’s good at that too.
  5. Arya kind of looks like Ned? And Jon?
  6. Why is Tyrion there?!

Game of Thrones airs Sundays at 9 PM on HBO.

Will S01E04 Recap

0

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

Will is basking in the success of his latest stage hit Two Gentleman of Verona, which did even better than his last. He’s starting to make a name for himself; people recognise and call him by name as he walks down the street. Will is also seeing success in his love life, since Alice no longer seems to be concerned with the fact that Will has a wife. Remember when that bothered her? Like two episodes ago? I do.

Things are going so well with them, in fact, that right after they end a performance, they sneak under the stage to have sex…right as Alice’s mother brings her fiance to the theatre to meet her. They just so happen to be standing right above Will and Alice, who’s moaning loud enough for the two to hear her. That Alice’s mother quickly silenced Alice’s fiance’s questions about the noise and shooed him off stage, made me wonder if she knows about Alice and Will. It felt like she was covering for her.

There was soon trouble in paradise, however, because Southwell came to visit Will at around that same time. Venturing outside, he found his rebel cousin speaking to Alice, who got very upset when Will did not credit her with the creative work she did in his last play and told him she was only a copyist.

I was on Southwell’s side in this scene. Not just in chiding Will for his growing pride, but for chastising him for his relationship with Alice. I didn’t much appreciate him calling her a whore later in the episode, however. Will seems to have forgotten that he has a wife.  Maybe I could get behind this ship if I’d felt any real chemistry between the actors or between the characters. I just don’t, nor do I care about either of them much. I just don’t root for them as a couple.

This brief moment of agreeing with Southwell didn’t make me dislike him any less, though. I still don’t like how hard he is trying to push Will into figuratively taking up arms for his cause. Especially when Will so clearly wants nothing to do with it. Southwell isn’t a bloodthirsty extremist like Topcliffe who uses religion to justify his vile actions. He’s decidedly non-violent and his means by which to fight against the Protestant oppression of Catholics is simply by writing down and disseminating his ideas.

He’s far better than Topcliffe and I admit that my dislike of him is somewhat unreasonable in light of that. I don’t dislike him because I like Will, as I said earlier, I still don’t care about Will as a character  (I don’t care about any of the characters actually and four episodes in, I think that I should). I just don’t like pushy people and Southwell is as pushy as they come.

Marlowe, I know I keep saying this but…I really don’t know what he wants. Just in general. But especially with Will. He takes Will (and Alice, Richard and one of the other members of the theatre troupe) to a debaucherous party. Alice immediately gets jealous when another woman gives Will attention and Marlowe takes will upstairs to the “real” party.

When Marlowe introduced Francis Bacon as a sodomite, I honestly thought he had taken Will up there as “fresh meat” for him. As a prospective person with whom Bacon could enter a sexual relationship from which Will would reap the benefits. Instead, he took him there to get high and have a bad trip so that he could ask a Catholic if God is real? It was a really weird sequence. Made weirder still by the fact that, while tripping, Will saw Topcliffe, Baxter, Southwell and his father.

Will runs out of the party high as a kite and somehow makes it back to his apartment, setting fire to Southwell’s manuscript when he gets there. Alice had followed him there and finds him with it. Putting it out, she takes it up and reads it. Upon realising what it is and that Will lied to her about Southwell’s identity, she once again gets upset with Will. This time for putting herself, her family and the theatre in danger. She breaks things off with him and tells hims to leave the theatre or she will tell her father or Topcliffe.

Speaking of Topcliffe, he still has Matthew in custody and is still torturing him for information on how to find Southwell. Information which the man refuses to give. At this point, it’s kind of a moot point since he’d already given him so much and proceeds to give him even more by telling Topcliffe about Southwell’s manuscript. Topcliffe kills him in a rage and blames Southwell for Matthew’s death, concluding that writers are a corrupting force.

Will takes the manuscript back to Southwell, tells him he never read it and that he wants nothing to do with his crusade. I was very proud of Will in this moment for finally telling Southwell to shove off. He pretty much only did it because he lost Alice because of it, but the point is that he did it. Will then goes to Richard to apologise for abandoning them at the party (and for punching Richard in the nose when he was high) and Richard inspires him to write Henry VI and tells him that Alice is with their parents meeting with her fiance to finalise their engagement.

So of course, the first thing Will does is run all the way there to stop it from happening. He succeeds in this too, despite being right outside the window of the room in which Alice and her fiance’s family are gathered in conversation and not exactly inconspicuously having a brief conversation with her.

Alice returns to the theatre just as Will begins to workshop some of Henry VI with Richard and Moll. They make up – obviously – but shortly thereafter Topcliffe’s men show up for Will. He willingly (no pun intended) goes along with them, only for Topcliffe to tell him that he wants him to write him a play. He just escaped Southwell trying to drag him into the conflict, only to be pulled in by Topcliffe.

Random thoughts:

  1. That zoom was really jarring and disorienting.
  2. Topcliffe: “Your God’s magic is fiction.” You literally serve the same god…
  3. Richard’s vanity is adorably hilarious.
  4. I wonder if these “ghosts” will inspire Hamlet.

Will airs Mondays at 9 PM on TNT.

Robotics

0

Robotics, the branch of engineering and science that encompasses mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, and others, has been widely mentioned recently in news media. Robotics itself deals with the design, construction, operation, and use of robots, as well as computer systems for their control, sensory feedback, and information processing. The word “robotics” was coined by a Russian-born American science-fiction writer Isaac Asimov in his 1942 short story “Runabout.” In this book, he characterized the robots in his short stories as helpful servants of man, a philosophy that continues today in the modern world when it comes to typical applications used in manufacturing and military exercises.

What can robots do? Most jobs robots are used for in today’s world involve repetitive, dangerous jobs which are seen as being too risky for humans. Robots are also used in factories to build vehicles, move heavy machinery from site to site, make harmful chemicals for use in pesticides, electronics for important structures and the list goes on. Robots are even used in the research of different medicines, for locating lost objects at hard to reach areas (like the bottom of the sea) and even to explore celestial bodies such as planets. Robotic technology has helped people who have lost arms or legs or have been unfortunately born without the strength to use their limbs effectively. Robots are a great tool to help mankind push forward in developing the modern world, from first world countries, to lesser off places that lack man power to support various industries.

However one cannot talk about this branch of science and not speak on the stigma attached to it. These pieces of technology are often seen as the destroyer of jobs and income for working class families; after all, why pay 50 men to do one job, where a few robots can complete the task, in less time, without needing a constant salary. Others believe robots will take over mankind with their superior intellect and strength- humans will run the risk of creating machines that can outsmart them in every way. These are all valid points, however, these cases cloud the bigger picture of how robots can actually push forward in scientific discoveries and applications that will aid us as a society going forward. Think not of how these AI (Artificial Intelligence) ran machines will get rid of jobs, instead think how they will create them. Robots themselves cannot function on their own; they require coders, engineers, researchers, testing facilities, and the list goes on.

We are often guilty in Barbados at looking at the small picture. Some may say that robotics have no effect on our daily living. That these things are only relevant to first world western countries and will not affect the common man by the rum shop. That is a dated belief that needs to be corrected. The world is a small place, STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields are driving innovation economies all over the world. Autonomous machinery in manufacturing is big on the world stage. Imagine, if our upcoming generations pushed forward in STEM research. Not only will they create jobs for themselves, but they will also open new avenues for others to follow in their footsteps. Robotics and STEM technologies on a whole would be a great plus for our economy, and noting how advanced we are in the Caribbean when it comes to telecommunication infrastructures, we are well posed to be the leading charge for robotic advancements, this side of the globe.

Game of Thrones S07E03 Recap

0

I have been pro-House Targaryen since season one. That has always been the house I chose to swear my fealty to (with House Stark a very close – almost insignificantly so – second). Which means I have been staunchly Team Daenerys for as long as this show has been on the air. I have wanted her to reclaim the Iron Throne for years. I have loved her and I have cheered her on and dismissed claims from other fans about her being an egomaniac. But not anymore.

By the gods she was an insufferable tw*t for a lot of this episode. Hell, she’d been so (for me) since she said that Jon needed to come to Dragonstone and bend the knee. I’m pretty sure that the only reason I’ve come to notice this about her was because she was doing it to Jon, whose been my favourite character since Ned was executed.

I was so annoyed with her when she had the audience with Jon. Purposely calling him “my lord” and not “your grace”, asking him why he was there if he hadn’t come to bend the knee, rolling her eyes and making faces at basically everything he said, pointing out her dragons and the presence of the Dothraki as if to say she’s untouchable…She needs to be taken down several pegs.

Which is why I’m glad that both Jon and Davos put her in her place. Jon told her about her father, called her a child and threw her line about not being judged for the sins of her father in her face! Then Davos threw her “birth right” in her face by pointing out that Jon –  a bastard with no rights to anything – has become a powerful leader in his own right by proving his worth and because his people believe in and love him.

Granted, she herself has earned the love and devotion of the people who follow her, but still. I loved that Jon brushed off her oft repeated line “I was born to rule the Seven Kingdoms and I will.” Her arrogance is largely due to the fact that she’s too accustomed to wining. So I’m happy that she’s losing the war right now. She needs to be humbled. To truly do that one of her dragons has to – needs to – die. She needs to realise she is not invulnerable just because she has dragons. Has she not been told of the Dance of Dragons?

All of that being said, it was nice finally seeing Jon and Daenerys meet and interact with each other. And warm up to each other a little by the time they spoke again (the fangirl in me really wants them to become a thing; wouldn’t it be great if that antagonism and tension turned into passion and that passion turned into…well…you know…). Bonding over dead brothers is a little macabre. I found myself once again asking how Daenerys knows something that she would not have heard of. How does she know that he has two dead brothers?

As much as I love that Daenerys is losing, I hate that Cersei is winning. Mad Queen Cersei is fun and all, but she needs to be taken off of the Iron Throne. I was very confused as to why the small folk were cheering on Euron. Even the nobles gathered in the throne room. They were afraid of her just a few weeks ago but here they are celebrating her victory?

Cersei has no intention of marrying Euron and I would like to think he’s smart enough to realise that. Delaying their “marriage” until after the war ends is a clear indication of her intentions. It won’t stop him from trying to woo her though. Euron is just that kind of guy. I love him and his whole character and persona, but he’s just as terrible a person as Cersei so he needs to be gotten rid of too.  Jamie would be very glad if he was because he is having none of his taunting. He absolutely hates Euron. I’m sure it’s a mixture of jealousy and recognition that he’s a loose cannon and not trustworthy at all. Also, how did Euron know how Myrcella died?

Cersei’s revenge against Ellaria was for more subdued than I thought it would be. When I saw Gregor in the cell with her I expected Ellaria and Tyene to suffer the same fate that Septa Unella did. Instead, she did to Tyene what Ellaria did to Myrcella; give her a kiss with her poisoned lips. It’s 110% a plot convenience that the poison can take up to weeks to work and kill it’s victim. Myrcella died in under an hour and Ellaria started to get nose bleeds in the same amount of time. It’s one of the most glaring and obvious examples of the writers doing something for the plot in the history of the series.

I can’t be the only one who was concerned for Jamie when Cersei kissed him and then went down on him right after wiping the poison from her lips. I hope she got it all even though I’m not so fond of Jamie anymore. All of the progression he made when he was a captive with Brienne has all but disappeared at this point. I still believe that he will be the valonqar and kill her, but I feel like she really, truly has to do something else that is beyond reprehensible for him to finally get to that point. So I expect that she will be doing something far worse than the Sept.

Jamie has sort of proven that he is a better battle commander than Tyrion. Which makes sense because, unlike Tyrion, he’s a seasoned warrior. Borrowing Robb’s tactics was a smart move, but I think that perhaps by referencing Robb and having Jamie follow his actions, the writers are signalling that the Lannisters will meet the same fate that Robb and his army did; that they will win the battles but not the war.

Olenna went out like the Queen that she is. No matter what position she is in, the woman always wins in some way. She insulted Jamie, she insulted Joffrey and ultimately one upped Cersei by confessing to being his murderer. By saying that she played a part in making Cersei the monster that she has become, I think that Olenna was acknowledging that her killing Joffrey is what led them to where they are now. I’m not sure that Jamie actually will tell Cersei that it was Olenna, though, there isn’t much point to it.

Jorah is cured! At last, one of Game of Thrones’ favourite punching bags had something good happen to him. I still don’t think that Sam used dragonglass in his treatment, however. Nothing has concretely pointed to that, which makes the easter egg about it having healing properties very confusing. Despite achieving the impossible, Sam is still doing the grunt work. Archmaester Marwyn could have given him a link for his maester’s chain for it. Instead he has to copy down old, dusty, deteriorating books and scrolls. That may just be a blessing in disguise, however. Being so old that they’re almost dust probably means that they have some knowledge about White Walkers?

Sansa’s actually doing a very good job as Lady of Winterfell. She’s making very sensible decisions with reasonable logic behind them. Littlefinger is still giving her unsolicited advice, despite her brushing him off every single time. The man is persistent. He’s thankfully interrupted by an unexpected Stark reunion. Bran returned to Winterfell. I want whatever he is smoking because he is super chill. And creepy. To be fair, Bran has seen all the things. Even his sister getting raped apparently. Anyone who’d seen as much as Bran has, likely would be the same way if they’d managed to survive it. He did a terrible job of explaining what it means to be the Three-Eyed Raven. I love that his first order of business was seeing Jon.

Random thoughts:

  1. Missandei is not having any of Davos’ small talk.
  2. Melisandre looks so tired. Smart of her to hide from Jon.
  3. You know why Ellaria killed Myrcella, Cersei.
  4. Now all of the Sand Snakes are dead. Tyene was the worst; “Bad p***y” was stupid and cringey. Bye Felicia.
  5. We know how Cersei pays her debts.
  6. Jon and Daenerys are so stubborn. It’s cute. Now kith.
  7. But why is Cersei paying back the Iron Bank…just to borrow more money from them? She hasn’t gotten herself out of debt.
  8. One of these dragons is going to die next week.

Game of Thrones airs Sundays at 9 PM on HBO.

Keppeki Danshi! Aoyama-kun (Clean Freak! Aoyama-kun) E04 Recap

Kae-Tan desu~ (*≧▽≦)

In this week’s episode we meet Narita who is like Aoyama, in the fact that he is also a germaphobe. The only difference is that he sees it a weakness at prefers to hide it from his classmates, by coming in ahead of everyone else to clean his surroundings. and live out his communication with other people through online gaming. This ends up being a double edged sword for him however, when those around him, particularly his ‘vermin’ classmates perform vile actions and he can’t react as he’d like.

In a cooking class the next day, the students are struggling along until they witness both Narita and Aoyama excelling as clean freaks (they’d rather die than eat or touch food/utensils that someone else has prepared) They prepare the meal without any help from the others which quickly turns into a speed cooking contest because…..I don’t know

Narita is playing online with his guild when he is introduced to a new player, ‘Aoi Sanmyaku’. He initially believes that it’s Aoyama, but his mannerisms are nothing compared to Aoyama which throws off Narita for a bit, but when he sees a limited key ring hanging from Aoyama’s bag, his suspicious arise once more. from the game and he wants to check. Unfortunately, that comes to a screeching halt when he is accused of stealing a girl’s gym clothes, and Aoyama ends up bailing him out.

Narita gains a newfound respect for Aoyama as a clean freak and as a person, but he is still insistent on keeping his germaphobe problem under wraps.

I’ll see you next week for episode 4 entitled, “Tsukamoto-kun is a Receiver for Life”

Bai bai~

Keppeki Danshi! Aoyama-kun airs on Crunchyroll every Sunday at 12:30 PM (AST)

Will S01E03 Recap

0

I only just realised that episodes one and two of this series premiered together and I have been one episode behind on this show from the very beginning (well about two now since I – sorry – missed last week’s episode; full time jobs really eat up a lot of your time). But thankfully, there is the weekend so I had time to catch up!

The guilt of Baxter having died in Will’s place was still eating away at him. So much so that he was having visions of Baxter’s death. I liked that the writers didn’t just brush side Will’s feelings on the matter and leave them behind in the last episode. It was good to see it carry over here considering how strongly he reacted to Baxter simply being arrested instead of him, let alone killed. They kind of did drop it by the end of the episode, however.

Aside from the mental anguish he was experiencing because of this, Will was struggling to write another play for Burbage after having been told that his follow up to his first successful fare was bad. His guilt over Baxter’s death leaked into this struggle as well. The rest of the theater troupe, rather unkindly, wasn’t letting him forget the man’s absence and made it very well known their preference for him over Will. He even had vision of Southwell tormenting him about the futility of Baxter’s sacrifice considering how poorly Will was performing. Will was also feeling guilty about his feelings for Alice and went to his cousin, Father Robert Southwell, to confess both.

I don’t really like Southwell. At all. Pretty much only because hes’s trying so hard to push Will into joining him in his little crusade (I seem to have a thing for disliking people simply because their actions do, could or will affect Will negatively). Not that I disagree with what he’s fighting for, just his trying to force Will into it. And when Will hit a low point – being kicked out of Burbage’s troupe and his place of abode, forcing him to seek help from his cousin – he preyed on Will’s dejectedness to coax him over to his side. Telling him that it was God’s plan that he be there. It was so very manipulative.

Marlowe too was having difficulties writing and bumped into Will as he was on his way to Southwell. I honestly thought that he was going to offer Will a place to stay. Not that Will would have accepted it, but I would have much preferred Will staying with Marlowe that Southwell (slimy and scheming as Marlowe is). Luckily, Southwell’s attempt to lure Will in backfired somewhat; instead of inspiring him to join him, it gave Will an idea of how to tackle his new play and get past his writer’s block.

Marlowe’s smirk when he saw Will go to Southwell’s to ask for help, though…It seemed like he knew that Southwell was there and I was worried that he would sell him out to Topcliffe. I may not like Southwell, but I don’t want him to get caught either. When Marlowe showed up at the house I was even more worried. But he genuinely caught my by surprise by warning them to flee rather than turning them in.

Not that Marlowe would have needed to turn them in because Matthew – the man who attempted to attack the priest during a service – pretty much gave Topcliffe everything he needed to know other than Southwell’s location. That scene was so incredibly frustrating. It was like the man had no notion of secrecy. By the time he’d decided to keep his mouth shut, it was already too late. But it was Marlowe and not Matthew who’d given Topcliffe Southwell’s location. I really can’t figure out what Marlowe is up to or what he’s after.

Southwell still managed to rope Will in by giving him his unfinished book which he intends to give the Queen. A tome which he wants Will to help him write. One which has to be so compelling that the Queen would be “unable to deny the justness of [their] cause.” But not just the Queen, anyone who reads it. It looks like he wants to distribute it to the masses. I get the feeling that what he’s doing is producing propaganda.

Despite his discomfort with his closeness to Alice and the resulting guilt, Will enlisted her help in writing his new play. They spent so much time working on it together, that they practically slept in each other’s arms. It was the exact opposite of what he was supposed to be doing concerning her. Her father, Burbage, even warned him to stay away from her when he found them asleep in the theatre. Somewhat surprisingly, Will didn’t even hesitate or protest or anything of the sort when she showed up at his apartment and they proceeded to have sex with each other. Apparently he doesn’t feel guilty anymore.

Presto’s sister was a huge disappointment. She had no desire to leave the life she’s living or to better herself in anyway. Presto is trying so hard and going so far to bring them out of poverty so that she doesn’t have to prostitute herself, giving her wise advice to save the money he brings to her so that they can do that…and she just doesn’t care. She just wants to spend it and live it up for however long it lasts before she wastes it all. It’s sad really.

I must say that this is the first time I actually felt sorry for Presto. I want to say that his sister is an idiot, but that’s really harsh and inconsiderate. I will say that at this point, I want him to forget about her and leave her where she is. That way he can take care of and better himself. She’s perfectly fine with her life as it is, it seems.

Random thoughts:

  1. We all know that Will is going to stick it to Alice.
  2. Radicals are not going to help the Catholics’ cause.
  3. Restrain the man, not beat him to death,
  4. Run Alice!
  5. You have a wife Will!
  6. How do these people learn an entire play in a matter of hours?
  7. I ship Richard and this handmaid.
  8. Sort of convinced now that Marlowe isn’t all together there.
  9. Again, you have a wife Will!

Favourite SDCC 2017 Trailers

0

This is not an exhaustive list of every trailer that came out of this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. As the title says, it’s just the ones that I particularly liked and got me excited about the films and TV shows they’re from.

The placement of the trailers in this list is not at all a ranking. The order is purely random and more like when I saw the trailers more than anything. With that out of the way, let’s dive into this list!

Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling

Rocko’s Modern Life premiered when I was a year old and I was four when it ended. But thanks to re-runs and syndication, I watched the show way later than that, but before I went into secondary school when I was 11. I watched it enough to still remember the theme song. Needless to say, it wasn’t a kid’s show and I didn’t make that realisation until I was an adult. Vague as they are, my memories of the show are quite pleasant and I’m looking forward to this one hour special. It’s set to be released sometime next year.

Pacific Rim: Uprising

I absolutely love Pacific Rim. As a huge fan of Neon Genesis Evangelion (it’s my number one favourite anime), it gave me hope that some day, a live-action adaptation of it could be made (with Asa Butterfield as whatever American equivalent of Shinji Hollywood comes up with, but the kid is getting kind of old now). It was so much fun and the soundtrack was amazing. Giant robots fighting Kaiju. It can’t get more shonen than that and it’s the best anime or manga adaptation Hollywood has ever done…and it’s not even based on an anime or manga. But it clearly takes cues from the medium.

The Jaeger at 0:39 and 0:44 looks like Baymax from Big Hero 6 to me. John Boyega sounds almost exactly like Idris Elba’s character in the first film (it makes sense, he plays the character’s son). This trailer just all together got my super excited for this film. The song helped a lot with that. It’s set 10 years after the events of the first film and will hit theatres on February 23rd of next year.

Blade Runner 2049

I’m excited for this film because Denis Villeneuve is directing more than anything else. He did amazing work with Prisoners and Arrival (one of my favourite films from last year) and I’m curious to see what he does with this property. The cinematography looks to be just as stunning as that from Arrival. This trailer doesn’t give away much in terms of story and I appreciate that. Too many trailers these days give away far too much. It gives just enough to tease and spark interest. Blade Runner 2049 will be released globally, this year, on October 6th.

Stranger Things 2

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgS2L7WPIO4

I pretty much love this trailer only because it’s Stranger Things. I knew nothing about the series and hadn’t heard about it until the entire internet, it seemed, was singing its praises and decided to check it out. I binged it all in almost one night (It was about 6 AM when I decided to go to bed and watch the remaining two episodes). It was seriously enthralling, thrilling, fun, emotional and just all around excellent. From the writing to the directing, editing, cinematography and soundtrack. It is a great show.

This trailer teases so many things! Will’s deepening connection with the Upside Down, said alternate dimension’s creeping into our world, a return to the Upside Down, that giant spider thing, the original portal expanding, Dustin’s pet from the other dimension, Nancy and Steve having trouble in paradise (just date Jonathan already!) and Eleven coming back.. I need to see it all! All nine episodes will drop on October 27th.

Thor: Ragnarok

The trailers for this film are doing a really good job of selling it. Every single one is fun and exciting, with that classic MCU sense of humour and I’m just anxious to get into the theatre and see this film already! James Gunn has infected the MCU with his style and aesthetic. Ragnarok looks like Guardians of the Galaxy had a baby with Gladiator, Blade Runner and this year’s Wonder Woman. I make the Wonder Woman comparison because of those sublime shots of the Valkyries racing toward Hela on their pegai. They look like paintings and quite similar in style to the sequence in which Hippolyta told a young Diana the story of the Amazons.

The costuming in his film looks fantastic and not just because of he vibrant colour palette they’re going for. Cate Blanchett is stunning as Hela and Chris Hemsworth has never been sexier as Thor; the short hair and facial hair are really the icing on the cake.

I love the whole 80’s vibe they have going on and look forward to seeing how this will lead into Infinity War. Ragnarok comes on November 3rd.

Westworld

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=phFM3V_dors

As confused as I was during much of the first season of Westworld, it was so intriguing and compelling that it wasn’t enough to make me give up on the show.

The song used in the trailer is very appropriate and effectively expresses the feelings of the sentient hosts. I like that it’s the only thing we hear throughout the trailer instead of lines from the show. It conveys the theme and tone of the upcoming season well enough.

Dolores looks absolutely joyful running down and shooting the helpless survivors of the massacre from the end of last season. Now that she’s Wyatt, I’m excited to see how much she changes as a character because of it. I also can’t wait to see Maeve’s search for her “daughter” and if the girl will even know or recognise her as her “mother.”

Outside of those two things, I just want to see what’s going on in the park in general and how the board is handling this crisis. Robert truly left them with one hell of a mess to clean up.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle

This trailer is more or less nothing but action and that’s really all we want from a Kingsman film isn’t? This isn’t one of those films you watch for the story or the theme or some profound exploration of the human condition. All I want from this film is some heart pounding action, awesome and quippy characters and just all around fun. And this trailer delivers on all of those fronts.

The action here looks so very, very entertaining and cool. I’m hoping we get another fight scene like the one in which Colin Firth killed every single person in the church in the first film. Speaking of, he’s back!

I love the idea of Julianne Moore as a villain, Pedro Pascal as a Southern gentleman and Channing Tatum. I love the idea of Channing Tatum. He is charismatic in every film he’s in, especially ones that lean toward action and comedy. Kingsman will be released on September 22nd of this year.

Marvel’s The Defenders

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_6J9BqgonU

I already talked about why I’m looking forward to this show in my recap preview. I love Sigourney Weaver. In anything. But especially when she’s playing characters like these. Like with Julianne Moore in Kingsman: The Golden Circle, I really like the idea of her playing a villain.

Two things that stand out to me in this trailer are the chemistry between our four heroes and the fighting.

They way they interact with each other feels so natural and despite the bit of tension and antagonism, it looks like they actually do like each other. I love the dynamic in the group. At least as much of it as we’ve seen so far. Luke telling Matt that they’re not going to hug – at the end of the trailer – followed by Matt’s laugh…that whole exchange felt so organic and real. Like it was a blooper that worked so well that they left it in. Matt’s reaction is so genuine.

The fighting already looks worlds better than the mess we got in Iron Fist and we’ve barely seen any of it. Hopefully Finn Jones has improved enough that his fighting doesn’t look slow and lazy. The hallway fight that we keep seeing more and more of with every trailer is the one fight I’m looking forward to seeing the most. Probably because it’s the one we keep seeing over and over again. In any case, I’m all in and ready for this show when Netflix releases all of the episodes this August on the 18th.

The Gifted

Another Marvel TV series! This time one set in the world of the Fox-owned X-Men. Stephen Moyer returns to the small screen in a franchise that his IRL wife, Anna Paquin, is a part of (she plays Rogue in the films).

Fox hadn’t been doing too well with their X-Men films until we got Deadpool and Logan. They hit it out of the park with Legion on the TV side of things as well. Fox seems to be on an upward swing with this franchise and Gifted seems to be continuing that trend. It looks a whole lot better than the other upcoming Marvel TV series on Freeform, Cloak and Dagger, at the very least.

For all I know the series could turn out to be pretty bad, but the trailer convinced me to give it a chance. It premieres on Fox on October 2nd.

Hey Arnold: The Jungle Movie

Nickelodeon is feeding off of our 90’s nostalgia once again with this two-hour film about our favourite cartoon character with a football shaped head (aside from Stewie Griffin).

This was the perfect kind of trailer because as the characters spoke about the impact Arnold had on their lives, we got to reminisce about the impact that the show and the character had on ours. And we got too see all of our favourite characters while they were at it. It’s emotional manipulation, to be certain, but the kind I can’t exactly be mad at. We’ll finally find out what happened to Arnold’s parents in November.

Teen Wolf

We need to kill that kid in the beginning of the trailer, whoever he is. I already don’t like his meddlesome, secret exposing, bold ways. He must be very brave, or very stupid, to challenge the pack like that. He needs to be gotten rid of. Perhaps he’s part of this “army” Allison’s grandfather is raising.

The subduction zone voice over perfectly sets up what we are to expect this season. It  said either you get tiny quakes or a big one, but I feel like both apply to this show. Every enemy and entity the pack has faced before were the “series of small quakes.” The events of this season will be the “devastating quake.”

The pack will face their greatest threat ever and I fully expect this show to go out with a bang in these final ten episodes when it returns this Sunday, July 30th.

The Lego Ninjago Movie

All I have to say about this trailer is that it shows that this is in line with the tone and comedy of the other two Lego movies; The Lego Movie and  The Lego Batman Movie. I really like and enjoy those two films so I expect I will with this one as well.

It looks fun, it looks funny and like an all around good time. I’m here for it.

Honourable Mentions

These are the trailers that haven’t quite sold me on the film or TV show they’re advertising. Some of the things here however –  Justice LeagueInhumans and American Horror Story: Cult – I’ve already decided I’ll watch. Click the titles to open the trailers in a new window

Bright:- It feels like it’s trying to do too much; buddy cop + fantasy + action thriller. I’m skeptical.

Marvel’s Inhumans:- Looks really, really cheap.

Justice League: – I prefer the first trailer.

Ready Player One:- I got hardly any sense of anything. Not even the tone. This trailer didn’t impress or move me at all.

American Horror Story: Cult:- This series isn’t as good as it used to be but…I’ll watch.

Keppeki Danshi! Aoyama-kun (Clean Freak! Aoyama-kun) E03 Recap

0

Kae-Tan desu~ (*≧▽≦)

Yeah, Yeah! -____- I know I’m late so instead of catching a fit, let’s jump straight into episode 3!

The team (the idiot trio, Zaizen & Aoyama) head to a restaurant because they believe that it’ll encourage them to win tomorrow’s preliminary match against Takada High School and form some bonds as an added bonus. Aoyama however isn’t convinced about the cleanliness of the place and refuses to eat or drink using any of the restaurant’s utensils.

They also run into Oshigami-Minami’s Takechi (you know the ab-flexing pervert from episode 1) after a few heated exchanges between the two sides, he eventually gets into a speed-eating contest with local fat boy, Yoshioka but he unfortunately doesn’t make the cut when dessert comes into play and ultimately gives up.

It’s the day of the Inter-High prelim match, the team is ready to begin their match against Takada High. Students from their school as well as the press have shown up, but Aoyama himself is missing. The team is frantic as Moka searches everywhere for him. Little do they know that he was baited by Kana who is the girlfriend of the opposing team’s captain. She planned to keep him stalled by removing her clothes and screaming if Aoyama moved (we all know that never would have worked anyway, Aoyama would rather die than touch someone else) We then find out that not only is Aoyama a germaphobe, he also suffers from claustrophobia (what is this guy even)

Moka eventually finds them and gets Aoyama back onto the field with 15 minutes remaining and his team down by 2 goals. They pull back the 2 goals quite quickly, but not before one of the opposing team players knocks Aoyama down to the ground. Aoyama’s uncleanliness is now below an unacceptable level for him, which causes him to move slowly and awkwardly. Takada tries to take advantage of this, but as the coach announces the final 5 minutes within the game, Aoyama comes out of his shell and scores a series of 3 final goals needed for the win. Oh did I also mention he had gave himself enough time to completely clean Takada Academy’s club room? Hilarious!

I’ll see you next week for episode 4 entitled, “Narita-kun Keeps It a Secret”

Bai bai~

Keppeki Danshi! Aoyama-kun airs on Crunchyroll every Sunday at 12:30 PM (AST)
