While hiding in plain sight from Michael (Ted Danson, “CSI,” “Cheers”), the wise architect of the Good Place (who doesn’t know he’s made a mistake), she’s determined to shed her old way of living and discover the awesome (or, at least, the pretty good) person within.

From Inside the Circle Presents Live in Concert at Mount Gay Distilleries

0

Just two Saturdays ago, on August 11th, Mount Gay Distilleries hosted its first ever live concert, a benefit thrown by Canadian TV series From Inside the Circle. Billed as “a music series with an industrial twist” From Inside the Circle is about taking local industrial work places (the warehouse at Mount Gay Distilleries, for example) and turning them into live concert spaces, while at the same time raising money for local charities. With three episodes shot in Canada and two in Trinidad, they shot their sixth episode right here in Barbados. All proceeds from the concert went to local Not-For-Profit organisation, the Substance Abuse Foundation.

In an address to the audience, CEO of the Substance Abuse Foundation, Marietta Carrington, stated that it was Mount Gay that reached out to the Foundation, as they were interested in naming them as the beneficiary of the concert. She went on to say:

“My first reaction was similar to I believe many of you: “An addiction centre partnering with an organisation that produces and sells alcohol? Give me a break!” What a contradiction it seemed at first glimpse….[further discussion] revealed the unique opportunity that this partnership could bring in supporting a powerful message around responsible drinking and driving. We could be at the Mount Gay Distilleries table, offering our expertise and voice to an area that is consistent with Mount Gay’s corporate social responsibility.”

The show begin with the Songwriter’s Circle which featured local artistes Indra Rudder – formerly known as Indrani – who performed two of her own original songs, one of which was “Shining Star”, Emile Straker – lead vocalists of the iconic calypso band The Merrymen – sang “Beautiful Barbados” and “Big Bamboo” and Barbados’ Cultural Ambassador, Dr. Anthony “The Mighty Gabby” Carter, performed his classic hits “Bridgetown” and “Emmerton.”

The Songwriter’s Circle was followed by special guest performances by up and coming local singers Lennox and Krisirie. First up was Lennox who performed his songs “Something About You” and “Liberation”, among others. He then sang a duet with Krisirie, who went on to do her own solo performance of songs from an upcoming project.

After the show there was a small reception at Mount Gay Distilleries’ Visitors Centre, with food prepared by executive chefs (chicken soup, drunk ox-tail with rice balls and Japanese inspired seafood lasagna) as well as a bar which served virgin and alcoholic cocktails.

There was also a door prize give-away compliments Elegant Hotels of a dinner for two at Tapestry Restaurant at Treasure Beach Hotel.

Castle Rock S01E01-05

0

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

I wish I had a vast, encyclopedic knowledge of Stephen King’s works so I could enjoy this show more. I get the feeling that there is a plethora of not-so-subtle easter eggs and references littered throughout, but they all go over my head. That’s not to say that I feel left out or that the show isn’t for me because I’m not a die-hard King fan. Castle Rock is intriguing, thrilling and engaging without it.

The two central mysteries of the series – Henry’s disappearance 27 years ago (I saw It: Chapter One, I get that reference at least) and who/what “The Kid” is – are fascinating. They may well turn out to be one, single mystery, however; the show seems to be saying that they’re deeply connected.

Initially I didn’t think Henry had anything to do with his father’s murder. We know that Molly killed the Reverend, but there is still the question of how and why Reverend Deaver ended up at the bottom of the cliff. Henry clearly didn’t like him very much and Reverend Deaver looked to be frustrated with Henry to about the same degree that Henry didn’t like him. There was animosity there to some degree.

Perhaps Henry did at least try to kill his father by pushing him off of the cliff. The Reverend did tell Alan that Henry did it. I’d like to think that if Henry did push him, he would have had a good reason. Henry still doesn’t remember what happened in 1991, so I’m hesitant to accept the word of anyone besides him about it. As our main character I expect that when he remembers what happened it will be the truth.

I think that Molly essentially was Henry when she killed the Reverend. From her explanation of how her powers work with Henry, it sounds like his consciousness extends to and takes over her body at times. She remembers killing him, so she was aware when it happened. Perhaps she just wasn’t in control of her body. Either that, or she felt the Reverend’s desire to die and did him a kindness. I don’t get the impression that that was the case, though.

We really don’t have any clues about what happened in the eleven days that Henry was missing. He started having flashes of himself in a cage, with someone coming toward him as he played with a toy car. Maybe he was kidnapped like the town at first assumed. That he was playing with a toy car, however, makes me think that this memory is from when he was a child (he’s an orphan) and not when he had disappeared.

I don’t like Henry very much. Less and less with each episode, in fact. He’s obnoxiously selfish. Firstly, he can’t even be bothered to look after Ruth. Secondly, he has no respect for Alan who has been taking care of Ruth. Thirdly, he chickened out of going to trial for purely selfish reason and not out of trying to do what was best for his client. Fourthly, he dumped “The Kid” on Molly. Lastly, he is insistent in not believing Molly about her powers, despite evidence of it. It’s like he’s purposely being obtuse.

As for “The Kid”, I feel really sorry for him. There is a vulnerability and innocence to him and he actually feels guilt about the terrible things that happen because of him. There’s no doubt in my mind that he really is the cause of of all of the bad in Castle Rock, but I don’t think that he’s evil. I never thought that he was “the Devil”, in fact, and he confirmed as much to Alan. I think that he has a passive ability that he is not in control of.

He either brings out the violent tendencies in people, is bad luck or is just a harbinger of death. Additional powers seem to be showing people the future and maybe even knowing it, and immortality – or at the very least eternal youth. It’s not exactly clear how touching him works because his cell mate was instantly riddled with cancer, whereas Dennis went on a murderous rampage in Shawshank (another reference I get). Also, he can possibly heal the unwell?

I think that Lacy may just have been a crazy old man. This show is set in the world of Stephen King, so his supposed messages from God about what to do may have been real. Just not from who he thought they were from. We know why he put “The Kid” in the cage, we just don’t know why he let him out. Although he did express doubt about his actions and a bit of remorse. He might just have had a perfect understanding of “The Kid’s” powers, given that he touched his face the last time that he saw him. That, I believe, is why he killed himself.

It seems to me that Molly will be key in understanding “The Kid” and getting information out of him, simply because of her powers. In the one, brief scene in which they interacted and her powers manifested, we learned more about him. If Henry is willing to admit that she has this power, then the two could sit down with him and question him as she listens to his thoughts. It’s no surprise that her power is as overwhelming with “The Kid” as it is with Henry, though in a different way. The two are clearly intertwined in someway. Lacy knew how, I think. Why else would he tell “The Kid” to ask for Henry?

Random thoughts:

  1. That’s a very elaborate way to commit suicide.
  2. This is far more than an internal corporate matter.
  3. Why is this little girl outside, at night, alone?
  4. This female guard who keeps telling him to smile is annoying.
  5. Dennis! No!
  6. That birthday party escalated quickly.
  7. Henry has to see that Alan’s presence in Ruth’s life is a good thing.

New episodes of Castle Rock are released every Wednesday on Hulu.

Sharp Objects S01E05

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

Just when I thought that Adora could not get any worst and that I couldn’t hate her anymore than I already did, she continuously proved me wrong throughout this episode by one-upping herself in pretty much every scene she’s in, with how incredibly despicable, hateful, mean-spirited, spiteful and just plain old evil she could truly be.

Firstly, there was the whole incident at the clothing store. Adora really never misses and opportunity to insult Camille. Her idea of introducing Camille to a stranger was to immediately demean her and let it be known that Camille is nothing like her. Then when Camille was at her most vulnerable, half-naked and with all of her cutting scars on display, Adora decided to the opportunity to not just demean her – yet again – by calling her “ruined”, but to make Camille’s cutting all about her. Because of course your adult daughter cut herself all over her body  to spite you, Adora. That was truly the most self-centered we’ve ever seen her. I actually thought for a moment that she was going to show sympathy toward Camille.

The entire thing was instigated by Amma, though, who seemed to be jealous that Adora’s attention was on Camille. She said in a previous scene that it was easy to get Adora riled up and told her about Camille’s new article – with choice quotes – to do just that. In fact, she was no doubt still angry that she wasn’t the first to see the article. So she was doubly getting back at Camille. This wasn’t the only time during the episode that Amma acted out to get attention.

Secondly, was Adora’s failed attempt to turn Richard against Camille. I knew that when Jodes went up to Camille and told her that Amma wanted to run lines with her, that it had been Adora who sent her over there to get Camille away from Richard. Her chief concern was that Camille was casting her in an unfavourable light and making herself out to be a good person and Camille a liar, or at least unreliable because she was emotionally unstable. Which is actually true.

However, that she weaponised her daughter’s distress against her and used Marian’s death to discredit Camille, while simultaneously trying to present herself like she was trying to look out for her was truly something. Fortunately, it looked like Richard knew exactly what she was doing and wasn’t taking her on. I don’t know how to feel about the fact that he didn’t tell Camille what Adora said. I don’t quite trust him so he might be being a little shady. But he is aware of how Camille is doing, so he could just as easily be trying to protect her.

Camille’s talking to Richard about his tête-à-tête with Adora and Bob Nash attacking John Keene are why Amma ran away; Camille and Adora’s attention were not on her. She looked to be very upset that Camille wasn’t watching her during her performance and downright distraught that Adora was focused on the fight. Not only does she know how to get to Adora, she also knows how to get to Camille. Now that she’s seen Camille’s extensive cutting scars, she knows how to manipulate her.

Given Adora’s over-protectiveness since Ann and Natalie were murdered and the tensions leading up to Calhoun Day because their murderer hadn’t been caught, disappearing was precisely what she needed to do get Camille and Adora’s attention on her. She didn’t get just their attention, however, she got the attention of the entire town. And Amma is going to milk it for days to come. Camille doesn’t seem to buy her schtick, though.

The third, last and worst example of how evil Adora Crellin is came at the very end of the episode. In yet another moment when I believed that she had finally found it within herself to feel sympathy for Camille. One would think that considering that Camille was the one who “saved” Amma – Adora’s precious one who can do no wrong – that she’d have earned some good faith from Adora. But no. No matter what Camille does, Adora insists on hating her. She doubled down on it in fact and once again used Camille’s emotional fragility as a weapon against her.

She told Camille that she never loved her and it was Camille’s fault that she couldn’t. Well, she really blamed it on Camille’s father, but more or less said that her “cold nature” was inherited from him and that coldness is the reason she never loved Camille. Then she had the gall, the gumption, the nerve, to tell Camille that she hoped it was some comfort while “tenderly” moving her hair out of her face. The woman is a monster. Evil incarnate. That’s why I’m glad Amma is the hell spawn that she is. It will eventually bite Adora in her prissy little butt.

Speaking of Amma, this is another episode that made me feel all the more confident that she’s the killer. Her apparent need to be the centre of attention could be a motive for why she killed Ann and Natalie. Adora was tutoring them and seemed to have a close enough relationship with them that she was beside herself with grief when they died. She’s prone to melodramatics, however, so her reaction doesn’t really say much about that.

But Amma doesn’t need much of a trigger to act out for attention. It’s not unreasonable to think that, given their ongoing relationship with Adora, that she would have felt like they were robbing her of her mother’s attention. Plus, she straight up lied to Camille’s face when asked about her relationship with Ann and Nicole and downplayed how close they were. She didn’t want to talk about them at all.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it turned out to be Adora, though. Camille did say that she thinks that Amma is afraid of something and Adora could be that very thing.

Random thoughts:

  1. This photographer is far less bothered than Adora.
  2. Why isn’t Camille in the photo with Adora and Marian?
  3. Adora suddenly has time to run lines with Amma now that Camille has volunteered to do it?
  4. Awww. Camille smiled when she saw Richard.
  5. Geez, calm down Ashley.
  6. Does everyone know about Amma besides Adora?
  7. Of course Jocelyn knows about Adora and Vickery.
  8. Why is this woman watching Mr. Lacey with Camille and Amma so hard?
  9. They telegraphed that fight so hard.

Sharp Objects airs Sundays at 9 PM on HBO.

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.

There wasn’t much in the way of plot development or progression in this episode – at least not to me – but like I said in the last recap, this show focuses on the characters more so than anything, especially Camille. Or, at the very least, that’s what I get out of it. I’ve seen in online commentary that Camille is an unreliable narrator. I never thought of her as such, but it would paint her interactions with other characters and the way we see them respond to her in a very different light. Particularly her mother and Amma.

It would lend some credence to the idea that she’s dangerous. Although I don’t quit believe that. As far as we’ve seen Camille is really only a danger to herself and the idea is that she’s a danger to others, namely Amma. Of course, the only person we’ve really seen call Camille dangerous is her mother and the woman hates her own daughter so much, that anything she says about her must be taken with a mountain of salt. Chief Vickery did say so as well, in this episode, but I get the impression that he is somewhat under Adora’s thumb and would parrot her thoughts and opinions.

On the subject of Adora’s animosity toward Camille, it looks like she hates her because when Camille was born she didn’t fit into her ideal vision of what her unborn child would be? Or that Camille’s birth would fix Adora’s relationship with her mother? And so she felt stupid/silly/like a child? It certainly fits with what we’ve seen of her before and her disliking Camille because of her defiance. It’s an awfully petty thing to hold over your child all of their life, from as far back as their childhood.

It also seems like – judging from the fact that Camille said that Adora was a child – that Adora had her very young. Which would also explain why she hates Camille. Wind Gaps does have certain ideas about women and seeing as Camille has her mother’s maiden name, she was born out of wedlock. Being an unmarried, possibly teen, mother would have made Adora an outcast. Given the stigma that would have been attached to Adora, I could see her putting her resentment about that on Camille. That stigma hasn’t followed her all her life, though, so who knows.

I so despise how Adora is toward Alan. She treats him like he’s little more than the help. I was so happy to see him calling her out on her “woe is me”, victim complex and how unfair she is to Camille. But of course Adora would never admit that she has done any wrong because everyone has wronged her, somehow. I love that Alan is the one person in the house that genuinely cares for Camille, aside from Gayla. It broke my heart when they tried to surprise her for her birthday – in the flashback to her teenhood – and she blew them off. Even more so when she went back to the cake and celebrated by herself. He was trying to connect with her and she wouldn’t let him. Adora had damaged her that much. Camille can’t let someone care for her.

This was somewhat reflected in her interaction with Richard in this episode when he tried to kiss her and she pulled away. He seems to genuinely have an interest in her, but he did have that conversation with Vickery earlier in the episode that made me think that he may just be using her. Add to that the fact that Camille was thinking of some very disturbing things while Richard manually stimulated her, it’s probably best that the two of them don’t head in a romantic/sexual direction. Just because I don’t think that it would be the best or healthiest thing for her.

The little bit of this episode that did have to do with the murders, was Camille showing Richard past crime scenes. Specifically, those that involved teenage girls. It is really strange that Camille has a connection to each of the crime scenes; two of them being places where traumatic things happened to her. It’s clear that she was assaulted by the football team at the “end zone”, but what happened at the shed still remains a mystery. Why said shed seems to be a popular hang out for misfit teen girls in Wind Gap, especially considering the images that litter it’s walls, isn’t something I think we’re ever going to get an answer for.

It’s interesting that Amma never mentioned to Camille that she was close friends with Ann and Natalie and curious that she doesn’t seem worried about her life being in danger. The more of Amma we see, the more her disingenuous nature is obvious and I think Camille is wise to her games. Even the “real” her that she shows Camille – the side of her that Adora doesn’t get to see – is a fabrication. She’s been a fraud for the entire time we’ve seen her on screen. I don’t buy anything she says and she’s even more manipulative that Adora, which says a lot.

She’s still a strong candidate for having killed Ann and Natalie for me. Her creepily, borderline flirtatious behaviour toward her teacher Mr. Lacey makes me think that maybe she flirted her way into convincing him to kill them for her. He wasn’t particularly resistant to her flirtations. But that’s just a quack theory.

We got a different picture of Natalie from John than we were previously led to believe. I didn’t at all expect him to say that she stabbed the girl in the eye. That was demonstrative of a tendency toward violence – and perhaps an anger problem – that’s shocking. Maybe there was a little bit of truth to what Bob Nash said about Natalie being a bad influence on Ann, but not in the way he means. He has a particular idea of Ann that is more or less the antithesis of Natalie. Perhaps Ann found in her a kindred spirit, someone with whom she could be herself. If there is one common thread between parents in this show, it’s that they see their daughters one way and it’s not who their daughters are. They don’t know them at all.

Random thoughts:

  1. Did she sleep outside, in the grass and not in the car?
  2. Vickery can’t be very good at following John if John knows he’s there.
  3. They know Adora well enough to know that she didn’t want to be there.
  4. Oh, John’s looking for the spider that Camille freed?
  5. Unexpected Tupac.
  6. She emerged rather quickly for someone who was supposed to be resting.
