Same Old Reggae Festival, With A Difference

0

The Barbados Reggae Festival and Fas7Star held their annual press launch,  revealing some changes to the show along with quelling some concerns. A panel consisting of the FAS Promotions team, representatives from Magnum, Liat & the Barbados Tourism Management Inc. (BTMI), as well as Barbados based artist Buggy Nhkente,  took turns discussing various aspects of the show.

One of the Directors of Fas7Star, Al Gilkes, cleared the air about the notable absence of festival staple Reggae On The Hill (ROTH). He informed the press that it would be impossible to host both the Buju leg of the reggae artist’s tour as well as ROTH. He continued, saying that the infrastructure of Farley Hill would make it impossible to hold the crowd expected for the Buju show, and that even the Kensington Oval may not be able to hold everyone that wishes to go to the event. He urged those who have not gotten their tickets as yet to do so, as they are currently more than 50% sold out with more than 2 months left until the big day.

Security will obviously be a concern, not only with the seeming rise in crime on the island, but also due to the sheer number of people expected to attend the event. By employing four private security agencies and the Royal Barbados Police Force, the event promoters have ensured that there will be more than enough security at the venue for the protection of patrons. Additionally, multiple entrances and exits will ease the flow of the masses in and out of the Oval. To combat parking issues there will be a park and ride taking patrons to and from the venue. “Rest assured. You will get to and from the event safely.” Al Gilkes said.

Ronnie Tomlinson, publicists for Buju Banton, shared the exciting news that Buju, along with his original band – minus one member – are rehearsing for four days a week, preparing to bring us an awesome show and historic performance. She also briefly touched on Buju’s youth foundation, aptly named The Buju Banton Foundation, which helps at-risk youth.

Allison Hunte another Director of Fas7Star informed the press that a vast number of online ticket sales are from international customers, bringing a huge boost in the tourism industry and the Barbadian economy as a result. She briefly touched on the VIP experience for the Buju show, noting that they’re in talks with several expert chefs who will bring a wide variety of treats for the VIP patrons, ranging from vegan cuisine to sushi. Continuing, she mentioned that there will be no VIP at the Magnum Xplosion Reggae Beach Party, bye that they are advertising private cabanas which can hold ten to twelve people, at a cost of $2500, with some premium bottles included.

The dates for the festival havve changed a bit compared to previous years. The festival commences with the “Long Walk To Freedom” tour on Saturday the 27th of April, followed by the “Magnum Xplosion Reggae Beach Party” on Sunday the 28th and ending with the “Vintage Reggae Show And Dance” on Tuesday the 30th, which fortunately comes after and is followed by a national holiday.

Ch’An Drops New Single, Video “Runaway”

0

Two weeks after teasing fans that she would be releasing new music soon, Ch’An delivered her newest single “Runaway” today, as well as a lyric video. “Runaway” is described as as “a song about finding love against all odds” in the video’s description on YouTube.

Somewhat reminiscent of Rihanna’s own “Love On The Brain”, “Runaway” quickly distinguishes itself from the former by transitioning into an epic ballad that shows off Ch’An’s skill and ability as a powerful vocalist, worthy of carrying on the mantle of legendary artists like Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin.

Shot on the East Coast of Barbados, the cinematic video – produced by Mosi Daniel and Mia Cumberbatch and directed by the former – features Ch’An running, crawling, horseback riding and climbing across dramatic landscapes before reuniting with her love (played by INO Podcast and Pulse Radio Show host, Marcus Myers).

“Runaway” was written by Mia Cumberbatch, produced by Mosi Daniel, mixed and mastered by Rubadan Productions and features guitar by Reyshad ‘Xavi’ Selman.

MEDIA RELEASE: Honey Jazz a Sweet Treat for Visitors

0

The sweet sounds of jazz filled the air at the Honey Jazz Gala concert, the diamond event of the Honey jazz Barbados Festival. Visitors from Australia, London, America, Finland, Canada and Ukraine were part of the appreciative audience who were enthralled by the vocal and musical excellence of the production this past Saturday at Frank Collymore Hall.

Host Caroline “Cici” Reid was joined this year by popular personality Kirk Browne and the pair proved to be a delightful dynamic combination, guiding the audience through the production seamlessly beginning with a tribute to Ella Fitzgerald and continuing with an eclectic variety including interpretations of songs by Sade, Peggy Lee, Amy Winehouse, Norah Jones, Nat King Cole and more along with instrumentals by the Honey Jazz Band led by Mylon Clarke..

International acts Domanique Grant from Canada and American singer/tap dancer Ted Louis Levy from Chicago did not disappoint and left the audience wanting more. The statuesque Domanique had the crowd riveted as she did a mashup of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” and her own song “Young World” along with a Norah Jones cover and audience favourite “Don’t Know Why.”

Ted Levy, a favourite of the Broadway to Barbados cast, engaged the audience with humour, talking with them throughout and showing why he has earned such wide acclaim as one of the best tap dancers around. He did his own unique rendition of Nat King Cole’s “Nature Boy” and brought in the entire cast to join him at the end of George Benson’s “Turn Your Love Around.”

The local acts were also stellar with Adrianna Mayers singing the Spanish classic “Besame Mucho”, powerhouse Toni McIntosh revving up the tempo with Beyonce’s “Work It Out” and Leigh Phillps making the audience swoon as she got “Caught Up in the Rapture”, an Anita Baker Classic. Jessica Rose, a one time recipient of a sponsored student ticket to attend Honey Jazz years ago, gave a stunning dramatic performance, directed by Marlon Legall, of Nat King Cole’s “Nature Boy.” Alyx Alanis did a jazzed up version of “Somebody That I Used to Know” confidently wading into the audience as she sang, Dannyele Leslie sang the huge Sade hit “Sweetest Taboo” and Akeiba Inniss flirted with the crowd with her rendition of Natalie Cole’s “Tell Me About It.”

Pannist Hashim Durant was the featured musician, joining the band for a beautiful rendition of Bill Withers’ “Just the Two Of Us.” There were also two surprise appearances that wowed the crowd by Betty B and also Nikita who performed with her brother Jabari.

Sweet like Honey, Smooth like Jazz – another fantastic night of live music.

Singer-songwriter Ch’An released a short, thirty second teaser to her Instagram page yesterday, previewing new music and visuals for an upcoming release entitled ‘Runaway’. The chanteuse is seen in the video dressed in a white, full length dress. She looks behind her as she runs, stumbles and crawls in a field.

No exact date was given for the release, only the promise that it will be “coming soon.” The announcement was no doubt great news to fans of Ch’An, who have been waiting for quite a while to hear new, original music from the artiste. ‘Runaway’ will be Ch’An’s first release since her hit single ‘Body’ dropped in November of 2017.

Cover Drive’s Amanda Reifer Drops ‘Ransom’

0

Front-woman of the local music group Cover Drive, Amanda Reifer, has made her first steps toward a solo music career. Last November, the day before Independence Day, Reifer released her first solo single “A Girl Like Me”. It was quickly followed by a music video one week later. In the early hours of this morning she released her second single “Ransom”.

In the song Reifer sings of an ungrateful partner that took her love for granted. The song – and her previous single – is a departure from the sound Reifer created with Cover Drive; a sound which the band themselves coined as “Caripop” and described as No-Doubt-meets-The-Black-Eyed-Peas.

The video accompanying the track on Reifer’s YouTube channel features the singer leaning backward on a chair with her arms bound behind her as her legs bounce up and down.

Sundown Superhero Teases New Music, EP

0

Just three months after the release of their debut EP, Wake Up the Neighbourhood, and two weeks into 2019, Barbadian pop-punk trio Sundown Superhero have been hard at work recording new music for an upcoming EP. The band shared behind-the-scenes photos of the recording process on their social media pages, revealing that six songs will be featured on the new EP and that  they only had four days to record.

Sundown Superhero released their first single, “California Dime”, in April of last year, their first music video – for their single “Midnight Knock” – in July and their first EP in October. They also performed at AnimeKon IX: World of Wonder and the One Movement Invitational Skate Competition.

Zeitgeist spoke with the band about the new EP.

Why did you guys decide to work on not just new music, but a whole new EP so soon after having released your first one?
Emile Sabga (vocals, guitar): Our brains don’t turn off – we’re writing new music all the time. We knew we had enough material for another EP with a more progressive and more mature sound. We’ve also been working closely with LA-based producer, Jordon Silva, and local studio owner, Scott Weatherhead of Pavilion Studios to make this project happen. The stars aligned, we saw an opportunity to push our creative limits and we took it. We hope to release the new EP at the beginning of the summer.

Why did you have only four days to record the EP?
Philip Norville (drums): Unfortunately the time we have with Emile is limited, so we have to be as efficient as possible whenever he’s here. We knew 4 days to finish the EP was a stretch, even after completing weeks of preproduction, but we somehow managed to pull it off with just minutes to spare. 6 songs completed in 4 days! And we couldn’t have done it without Jordy, our source of motivation and inappropriate jokes.

Are the songs on the new EP like the songs from Wake Up in that they were songs you wrote years ago, are they songs that didn’t make Wake Up or are they entirely new songs?
Craig Haniff (lyrics, bass, vocals): All the songs that’ll be featured on this new EP are actually all relatively new songs. Before, and after, WUTN [Wake Up The Neighbourhood] was released we continued our writing process and it turned out that the new batch of songs all had the same musical energy and lyrical theme. So, we decided to put ’em on a new record that we all felt in our soul would be the perfect follow up to WUTN.

How was 2018 for the band and what are your goals for this year?
Emile: 2018 was a monumental year for our band. For those who know us, we’ve been playing together for many years but we finally decided to take the plunge in 2018, and really give this thing a shot. The response was unlike anything we could have possibly expected, and it drives us every day to be better. We have big plans for 2019! Apart from releasing our new EP, we hope to play as many live shows as we can, both locally and overseas, and continue to build a community around this genre on the island.

MEDIA RELEASE: Caribbean Designers Making a Connection

0

FORMING a Caribbean connection is the aim of a fashion expo slated for Barbados later this month.

One of the unconventional wedding gowns out of Antigua which will be showcased at Bridal Couture later this month.

Headlined Bridal Couture, the one-night event will feature designers from across the Caribbean. These include Shirrine Gillon and Anse Henry from Antigua; Lisa Barton-Volney from St. Lucia; Shernicia Mayers from St. Vincent and Arielle Rock from Barbados.

Hosted by local agency Curvy Revolution Model Management (CRMM) the fashion lines will offer all things bridal including gowns, collections for bridal showers, bachelor and bachelorette parties, lingerie and swimwear worn by models from CRMM and Dream Catcher Model Management from Antigua.

Meanwhile, partners in CRMM Alicia Clarke and Hugh Williams said the event comes just a few weeks after the company’s fifth anniversary and is a continuation of their efforts to bring the regional fashion industry closer together.

“If we don’t do anything for ourselves nothing will happen,” Williams said during a short break at rehearsals. He continued: “We can’t depend on the outside to do that for us, we have to do it for ourselves. Here we’ve been struggling, in Barbados it’s always been touch and go, stop and go.”

Managing Directors of Curvy Revolution Model Management (CRMM) Hugh Williams and Alicia Clarke.

Clarke said the answer to a stronger fashion industry is working together. “It is hard, I know but if all the agencies in Barbados get together and work together this industry would be a big thing. I truly believe that,” she said.

The two said the fashion industry in the Caribbean is evolving and CRMM is as well. It is one of the few agencies which includes plus size models in its portfolio. “We want to change the public’s perception of plus size women and people on the whole,” Clarke said. Williams added, “The concept of modeling has changed, as you know in the Caribbean not everybody is slim, we have people of all sizes, ages, we’re small so we have to cater for everyone.”

The January 26th event also creates a space for other businesses in the industry including confectioners and bakers.

Bridal Couture will be held on Saturday, January 26th at the Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute, starting at 7:00 pm.

Tuesday, 15 January starts with a ‘Bajan Film Night’ at the Walled Garden Theatre, Barbados Museum & Historical Society, from 5:30pm with screenings of two award-winning films: PANAMA DREAMS, a documentary on West Indians who went to Panama to build the canal; and THE LAND WE CALL HOME, a film of a young journalist and her team who embark on a journey to discover the truth about an unknown creature. Both films are from local filmmakers, Alison Saunders and Stockton Miller respectively.

Also on Tuesday, ‘Surf’s Up!’, 7:00pm at Copacabana Beach Club features PAIGE, a documentary about Paige Alms, the world’s best female big wave surfer; and BREATH, based on the award-winning and international bestselling novel about two teenage boys, hungry for discovery, whose unlikely friendship with a mysterious older adventurer pushes them to take risks that will have a lasting and profound impact on their lives.

On Wednesday, 16 January, LITTLE WOODS, the story of two sisters driven to work outside the law to better their lives is on at the Walled Garden Theatre starting at 7:00pm.  Created by the talented young director Nia Da’Costa and starring the delightful Lily James (of Downtown Abbey and Cinderella) this film will captivate you like no other.

The Festival’s popular CineCuisine Night on Thursday 17 January at the Copacabana Beach Club screens WASTED: THE STORY OF FOOD WASTE where filmgoers will learn insider secrets about the food industry from Michelin-starred chefs over signature drinks and food samplings.

Also on Thursday, the Walled Garden Theatre will host the Barbados premiere of the gripping drama CARGO, which features a sensitive fisherman who transforms into a prolific human smuggler to pay off a gambling debt and provide for his family, starting at 7:00pm.

On Friday, 18 January at 7:00pm, the Walled Garden Theatre screens RUMBLE: INDIANS WHO ROCKED THE WORLD. This rock ‘n roller of a documentary highlights a missing chapter in the history of North American music: the Indigenous influence, and how pioneering Native musical icons helped shape the popular songs over the decades.

On Saturday, 18 January, filmmaker Susan Rostock will host a Film Editing Masterclass from 10:00am – 11:30am at the Cynthia Wilson Theatre, University of the West Indies campus, followed by the free documentary BACK TO NATURAL at 12:00 noon. The documentary explores universal aspects of the Black experience and the “New” Natural Hair movement and reveals the emotional and shocking truth about hair, politics, and racial identity in Black communities and beyond.

The second free screening on Saturday takes place at 1:00pm in the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination (UWI).  HOW TO LET GO OF THE WORLD and LOVE ALL THE THINGS CLIMATE CAN’T CHANGE is the opening for the inaugural climate summit, “Degrees of Change: It’s a Big Deal”.  Held in partnership with the Barbados-based Walkers Institute for Regenerative Research, Education and Design (WIRRED) the summit discusses how art, design, science, and corporate responsibility can converge to drive climate resilience in small island developing states.

BIFF will pay tribute to civil rights champion and calypso great Harry Belafonte on Saturday, 19 January from 7:00pm with a screening of the documentary about his life, SING YOUR SONG. Additionally, Grammy award nominee Nicholas Brancker will be honoured for his extraordinary musical talents and career that includes collaborations with music industry elites such as Roberta Flack, Fritz McIntyre of Simply Red and Cindy Lauper.  The evening concludes with a reception and live music.

Closing the 2019 festival season on Sunday, 20 January from 5:30pm, the free family event ‘Shorts On The Beach’ screens a series of short films followed by GHOSTBUSTERS starring Sigourney Weaver, the festival guest star.  This closing event will be held at Copacabana Beach Club.

Jennifer Smith-Bent, BIFF founder, commented, “We have been overwhelmed by the response to the festival and want to thank those who have already come out to enjoy the films, filmmaker discussions and masterclasses. This week sees a variety of great films and events for everyone. We at BIFF recognize that the Caribbean is particularly susceptible to the impact of climate change on the environment, so it’s apt that we present some of the past year’s strongest independent films about this topic.  We are also incredibly proud to host the first annual climate summit of WIRRED, and hope it will receive strong support from the public.”

All films will be followed by a Q&A discussion with the filmmakers and actors. For a complete schedule and more information about BIFF films and events, please visit www.barbadosfilmfest.org. Tickets are on sale at Ticketpal.com under “BIFF”.
