How has your background or upbringing influenced your artistic journey?
My upbringing heavily influenced my artistic journey. Growing up, our home was always filled with local art and African-inspired pieces, which nurtured my love and appreciation for culture. My aunts often had me outdoors from an early age, exposing me to community life and celebration.
I attended East Coast Road and Spectacular shows, where my love for performing arts/entertainment deepened. Looking back, I now realize how much those experiences shaped me and curated my passion for culture and the arts.
When was the first time that you felt like your work was appreciated?
Ouuu good question!
Thinking about it, one of the most meaningful moments for me happened at one of my AYO Kidz & Teenz showcases. A parent came up to me and said, “Thank you! I love what you’re doing — it feels real. I can feel the love and the FAMILY.” His daughter was only in her first or second term with me, and hearing that meant so much. It was a powerful reminder that the love and intention I pour into what I do are truly being felt and appreciated.
How would you describe your creative process?
I don’t have a particular process when it comes to creating. What I do know is that when I have a vision that keeps coming to mind, I try my best to bring it to life. I write a lot — jotting down ideas whenever they come. If inspiration hits while I’m out, I’ll record a voice note on my phone or send myself an email with all the details before the moment passes.
What keeps you motivated to create, especially in a country where creatives sometimes struggle for recognition?
My love for creating is what keeps me motivated. Yes, we all seek recognition at times, but when it’s in your DNA, you’ll create regardless. The timeline of creativity can look different for everyone, and it has certainly shifted for me over the years. For me, to create is to feed the soul.
When people engage with your work, what do you want them to get out of it?
My love and joy towards the process and outcome. A sense of self in a way that if I can find that Joy they can too…however that looks.
